Moment conditions for the asymptotic completeness of iid gap sequences

We study conditions under which integer sequences with independent, identically distributed gaps are asymptotically $k$-complete, meaning that every sufficiently large integer can be represented as the sum of exactly $k$ distinct elements of the sequence, or equivalently whether $k$-fold sumsets with distinct entries from such sequences generate all sufficiently large integers. Prior results established asymptotic completeness under strong conditions on the gap distribution involving the moment generating function. Leveraging renewal theory our main result shows that asymptotic $2$-completeness holds almost surely under the much weaker assumption of a finite second moment. Furthermore, using Schnirelmann densities and Mann's theorem we show weak asymptotic $k$-completeness under only a finite first moment condition, albeit with an upper bound on the first moment.

Limit shape of the leaky Abelian sandpile model with multiple layers

In this paper we study a triple generalization of the Leaky Abelian Sandpile Model (LASM) of Alevy and Mkrtchyan, originally analyzed in the case of the square lattice in dimension two. First, we work in any dimension. Second, each site can hold several different stacks of sand, one for each of a certain given number of different layers or colors. Third, when a stack of one color at a site topples, it can send sand not only to its nearest neighbors in equal amounts, but to all possible locations and colors, according to a fixed but arbitrary mass distribution. Stacks of different colors can topple according to different distributions and different leakiness parameters, however the toppling rule should be site-independent. We obtain three main results. First, in this generality, when the LASM is started with $N$ grains of sand in one color at the origin, the final stable configuration, after scaling down by $\log N$, converges to a limit shape as $N$ goes to infinity. Second, when the leakiness parameter converges to infinity and the toppling distribution has finite range, the limit shape converges to a polytope. Third, when the leakiness parameters converge to one, which means the leakiness disappears, the limit shape of the sandpile converges to an ellipsoid. From a technical point of view, we rely on a strong relation between the Green function for random walk and the shape of the sandpile. Finally, the limit shape exhibits interesting duality properties, which we also investigate.

On the phase diagram of the polymer model

In dimensions 3 or larger, it is a classical fact that the directed polymer model has two phases: Brownian behavior at high temperature, and non-Brownian behavior at low temperature. We consider the response of the polymer to an external field or tilt, and show that at fixed temperature, the polymer has Brownian behavior for some fields and non-Brownian behavior for others. In other words, the external field can induce the phase transition in the directed polymer model.

The Limit Shape of the Leaky Abelian Sandpile Model

The leaky abelian sandpile model (Leaky-ASM) is a growth model in which $n$ grains of sand start at the origin in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ and diffuse along the vertices according to a toppling rule. A site can topple if its amount of sand is above a threshold. In each topple a site sends some sand to each neighbor and leaks a portion $1-1/d$ of its sand. We compute the limit shape as a function of $d$ in the symmetric case where each topple sends an equal amount of sand to each neighbor. The limit shape converges to a circle as $d\to 1$ and a diamond as $d\to\infty$. We compute the limit shape by comparing the odometer function at a site to the probability that a killed random walk dies at that site. When $d\to 1$ the Leaky-ASM converges to the abelian sandpile model (ASM) with a modified initial configuration. We also prove the limit shape is a circle when simultaneously with $n\to\infty$ we have that $d=d_n$ converges to $1$ slower than any power of $n$. To gain information about the ASM faster convergence is necessary.

Existence of similar point configurations in thin subsets of $\Bbb R^d$

We prove the existence of similar and multi-similar point configurations (or simplexes) in sets of fractional Hausdorff measure in Euclidean space. These results can be viewed as variants, for thin sets, of theorems for sets of positive density in $\Bbb R^d$ due to Furstenberg, Katznelson and Weiss \cite{FKW90}, Bourgain \cite{B86} and Ziegler \cite{Z06}. Let $d \ge 2$ and $E\subset {\Bbb R}^d$ be a compact set. For $k\ge 1$, define $$Δ_k(E)=\left\{\left(|x^1-x^2|, \dots, |x^i-x^j|,\dots, |x^k-x^{k+1}|\right): \left\{x^i\right\}_{i=1}^{k+1}\subset E\right\} \subset {\Bbb R}^{k(k+1)/2}, $$ the {\it $(k+1)$-point configuration set} of $E$. For $k\le d$, this is (up to permutations) the set of congruences of $(k+1)$-point configurations in $E$; for $k>d$, it is the edge-length set of $(k+1)$-graphs whose vertices are in $E$. Previous works by a number of authors have found values $s_{k,d} s_{k,d}$, then $Δ_k(E)$ has positive Lebesgue measure. In this paper we study more refined properties of $Δ_k(E)$, namely the existence of (exactly) similar or multi--similar configurations. For $r\in\Bbb R,\, r>0$, let $$Δ_{k}^{r}(E):=\left\{\vec{t}\in Δ_k\left(E\right): r\vec{t}\in Δ_k\left(E\right)\right\}\subset Δ_k\left(E\right).$$ We show that for all $E$ with Hausdorff dimension $>s_{k,d}$, a natural measure $ν_k$ on $Δ_k(E)$ and all $r\in\Bbb R_+$, one has $ν_k\left(Δ_{k}^{r}\left(E\right)\right)>0$. Thus, there exist many pairs, $\{x^1, x^2, \dots, x^{k+1}\}$ and $\{y^1, y^2, \dots, y^{k+1}\}$, in $E$ which are similar by the scaling factor $r$. We also show the existence of triply-similar and multi-similar configurations.

Turning point processes in plane partitions with periodic weights of arbitrary period

We study random plane partitions with respect to volume measures with periodic weights of arbitrarily high period. We show that near the vertical boundary the system develops up to as many turning points as the period of the weights, and that these turning points are separated by vertical facets which can have arbitrary rational slope. In the lozenge tiling formulation of the model the facets consist of only two types of lozenges arranged in arbitrary periodic deterministic patterns. We compute the correlation functions near turning points and show that the point processes at the turning points can be described as several GUE-corners processes which are non-trivially correlated. The weights we study introduce a first order phase transition in the system. We compute the limiting correlation functions near this phase transition and obtain a process which is translation invariant in the vertical direction but not the horizontal.

Random gap processes and asymptotically complete sequences

We study a process of generating random positive integer weight sequences $\{ W_n \}$ where the gaps between the weights $\{ X_n = W_n - W_{n-1} \}$ are i.i.d. positive integer-valued random variables. We show that as long as the gap distribution has finite $\frac{1}{2}$-moment, almost surely, the resulting weight sequence is asymptotically complete, i.e., all large enough multiples of the gcd of the possible gap values can be written as a sum of distinct weights. We then show a much stronger result that if the gap distribution has a moment generating function with large enough radius of convergence, then every large enough multiple of the gcd of gap values can be written as a sum of $m$ distinct weights for any fixed $m \geq 2$.

GUE corners limit of q-distributed lozenge tilings

We study asymptotics of $q$-distributed random lozenge tilings of sawtooth domains (equivalently, of random interlacing integer arrays with fixed top row). Under the distribution we consider each tiling is weighted proportionally to $q^{\mathsf{vol}}$, where $\mathsf{vol}$ is the volume under the corresponding 3D stepped surface. We prove the following Interlacing Central Limit Theorem: as $q\rightarrow1$, the domain gets large, and the fixed top row approximates a given nonrandom profile, the vertical lozenges are distributed as the eigenvalues of a GUE random matrix and of its successive principal corners. Our results extend the GUE corners asymptotics for tilings of bounded polygonal domains previously known in the uniform (i.e., $q=1$) case. Even though $q$ goes to $1$, the presence of the $q$-weighting affects non-universal constants in our Central Limit Theorem.

Symmetrizing Tableaux and the 5th case of the Foulkes Conjecture

The Foulkes conjecture states that the multiplicities in the plethysm Sym^a(Sym^b V) are at most as large as the multiplicities in the plethysm Sym^b(Sym^a V) for all a <= b. This conjecture has been known to be true for a <= 4. The main result of this paper is its verification for a = 5. This is achieved by performing a combinatorial calculation on a computer and using a propagation theorem of Tom McKay from 2008. Moreover, we obtain a complete representation theoretic decomposition of the vanishing ideal of the 5th Chow variety in degree 5, we show that there are no degree 5 equations for the 6th Chow variety, and we also find some representation theoretic degree 6 equations for the 6th Chow variety.

Plane partitions with 2-periodic weights

We study scaling limits of skew plane partitions with periodic weights under several boundary conditions. We compute the correlation kernel of the limiting point process in the bulk and near turning points on the frozen boundary. The turning points that appear in the homogeneous case split in our model into pairs of turning points macroscopically separated by a "semi-frozen" region. As a result the point process at a turning point is not the GUE minor process, but rather a pair of GUE minor processes, non-trivially correlated. We also study an intermediate regime when the weights are periodic but all converge to 1. In this regime the limit shape and correlations in the bulk are the same as in the case of homogeneous weights and periodicity is not visible in the bulk. However, the process at turning points is still not the GUE minor process.

Entropy of Schur-Weyl Measures

Relative dimensions of isotypic components of N-th order tensor representations of the symmetric group on n letters give a Plancherel-type measure on the space of Young diagrams with n cells and at most N rows. It was conjectured by G. Olshanski that dimensions of isotypic components of tensor representations of finite symmetric groups, after appropriate normalization, converge to a constant with respect to this family of Plancherel-type measures in the limit when N/sqrt{n} converges to a constant. The main result of the paper is the proof of this conjecture.

Asymptotics of the maximal and the typical dimensions of isotypic components of tensor representations of the symmetric group

Vershik and Kerov gave asymptotical bounds for the maximal and the typical dimensions of irreducible representations of symmetric groups $S_n$. It was conjectured by G. Olshanski that the maximal and the typical dimensions of the isotypic components of tensor representations of the symmetric group admit similar asymptotical bounds. The main result of this article is the proof of this conjecture. Consider the natural representation of $S_n$ on $(\mathbb{C}^N)^{\otimes n}$. Its isotypic components are parametrized by Young diagrams with $n$ cells and at most $N$ rows. P. Biane found the limit shape of Young diagrams when $n\rightarrow\infty,\ \sqrt{n}/N\rightarrow c$. By showing that this limit shape is the unique solution to a variational problem, it is proven here, that after scaling, the maximal and the typical dimensions of isotypic components lie between positive constants. A new proof of Biane's limit-shape theorem is obtained.

Random skew plane partitions with a piecewise periodic back wall

Random skew plane partitions of large size distributed according to an appropriately scaled Schur process develop limit shapes. In the present work we consider the limit of large random skew plane partitions where the inner boundary approaches a piecewise linear curve with non-lattice slopes, describing the limit shape and the local fluctuations in various regions. This analysis is fairly similar to that in [OR2], but we do find some new behavior. For instance, the boundary of the limit shape is now a single smooth (not algebraic) curve, whereas the boundary in [OR2] is singular. We also observe the bead process introduced in [B] appearing in the asymptotics at the top of the limit shape.

Scaling limits of random skew plane partitions with arbitrarily sloped back walls

The paper studies scaling limits of random skew plane partitions confined to a box when the inner shapes converge uniformly to a piecewise linear function V of arbitrary slopes in [-1,1]. It is shown that the correlation kernels in the bulk are given by the incomplete Beta kernel, as expected. As a consequence it is established that the local correlation functions in the scaling limit do not depend on the particular sequence of discrete inner shapes that converge to V. A detailed analysis of the correlation kernels at the top of the limit shape and of the frozen boundary is given. It is shown that depending on the slope of the linear section of the back wall, the system exhibits behavior observed in either [OR2] or [BMRT].
