The Hidden Geometry of Astrophysical Spectra: Path-Signatures of Line Profiles

The morphology of a spectral-line profile contains information beyond scalar summaries of line strength, centroid, width, global asymmetry, or diagnostic line ratios. Broad wings, shoulders, double peaks, secondary components, and composite emission--absorption structures encode how flux is ordered across wavelength but can remain indistinguishable under conventional summaries. We introduce an interpretable geometric representation of line profiles inspired by rough path theory. Each wavelength-sampled profile is mapped to a common systemic rest-frame velocity grid and treated as a trajectory in velocity--flux space, traversed from blue to red. From this path, we define a compact set of low-order descriptors measuring signed velocity--flux area, blue--red imbalance localization, higher-order shape complexity, and emission--absorption ordering. Using synthetic profiles, we show that these descriptors separate morphologies with similar full width at half maximum (FWHM), non-parametric velocity width ($W_{80}$), and low-order moment summaries. We then apply the method to MaNGA integral-field spectroscopy by computing H$\alpha$ descriptors in individual spaxels and clustering them in a low-dimensional feature space. The resulting classes form spatially coherent regions of similar ordered line morphology. Although no external velocity field is supplied to the clustering, stacked spectra within these regions recover coherent large-scale centroid-velocity patterns broadly consistent with the MaNGA reference velocity fields. Symmetries and Higher-Form Connections in Derived Differential Geometry

We introduce a general definition of higher-form connections on principal $\infty$-bundles in differential geometry. This is achieved by developing the formal differentiation and integration of maps from smooth manifolds to derived stacks with sufficient deformation theory. That allows us to introduce the Atiyah $L_\infty$-algebroid of a principal $\infty$-bundle and establish its global sections as the $L_\infty$-algebra of the derived higher symmetry group of the bundle. We define the space of $p$-form connections on an $\infty$-bundle as the space of order $p$ splittings of its Atiyah $L_\infty$-algebroid. This can be cast equivalently as lifting the classifying map of a bundle on a manifold to the order $p$ truncation of the de Rham stack of the manifold. We demonstrate that our new concept of derived geometric $p$-form connections recovers the known notion of connections on higher U(1)-bundles defined via \v{C}ech-Deligne differential cocycles. We further relate the $L_\infty$-algebras of derived higher symmetries of higher U(1)-bundles and higher Courant algebroids. Some applications in higher gauge theory and in supergravity are mentioned.

The Cauchy problem for gradient generalized Ricci solitons on a bundle gerbe

We prove well-posedness of the analytic Cauchy problem for gradient generalized Ricci solitons on an abelian bundle gerbe and solve the initial data equations on every compact Riemann surface. Along the way, we provide a novel characterization of the self-similar solutions of the generalized Ricci flow by means of families of automorphisms of the underlying abelian bundle gerbe covering families of diffeomorphisms isotopic to the identity.

An equivalence theorem for algebraic and functorial QFT

This paper develops a novel approach to functorial quantum field theories (FQFTs) in the context of Lorentzian geometry. The key challenge is that globally hyperbolic Lorentzian bordisms between two Cauchy surfaces cannot change the topology of the Cauchy surface. This is addressed and solved by introducing a more flexible concept of bordisms which provide morphisms from tuples of causally disjoint partial Cauchy surfaces to a later-in-time full Cauchy surface. They assemble into a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian bordism pseudo-operad, generalizing the geometric bordism pseudo-categories of Stolz and Teichner. The associated FQFTs are defined as pseudo-multifunctors into a symmetric monoidal category of unital associative algebras. The main result of this paper is an equivalence theorem between such globally hyperbolic Lorentzian FQFTs and algebraic quantum field theories (AQFTs), both subject to the time-slice axiom and a mild descent condition called additivity.

The local moduli space of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system

We study the deformation theory of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system on a principal bundle with a compact structure group over a compact manifold. We first construct, as an application of the general slice theorem of Diez and Rudolph, a smooth slice in the tame Fr\'echet category for the coupled action of bundle automorphisms on metrics and connections. Using this result, together with a careful analysis of the linearization of the Einstein-Yang-Mills system, we realize the moduli space of Einstein-Yang-Mills pairs modulo automorphism as an analytic set in a finite-dimensional tame Fr\'echet manifold, extending classical results of Koiso for Einstein metrics and Yang-Mills connections to the Einstein-Yang-Mills system. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of \emph{essential deformation} of an Einstein-Yang-Mills pair, which we characterize in full generality and explore in more detail in the four-dimensional case, proving a decoupling result for trace deformations when the underlying Einstein-Yang-Mills pair is a Ricci-flat metric coupled to an anti-self-dual instanton. In particular, we find a novel obstruction that does not occur in the \emph{decoupled} Einstein or Yang-Mills moduli problems. Finally, we prove that every essential deformation of the four-dimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills system based on a Calabi-Yau metric coupled to an instanton is of restricted type.

$\infty$-Bundles

Higher bundles are homotopy coherent generalisations of classical fibre bundles. They appear in numerous contexts in geometry, topology and physics. In particular, higher principal bundles provide the geometric framework for higher-group gauge theories with higher-form gauge potentials and their higher-dimensional holonomies. An $\infty$-categorical formulation of higher bundles further allows one to identify these objects in contexts outside the worlds of smooth manifolds or topological spaces. This article reviews the theory of $\infty$-bundles, focussing on principal $\infty$-bundles, and surveys several of their applications. It is an invited contribution to the Topology section in the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics.

Lorentzian bordisms in algebraic quantum field theory

It is shown that every algebraic quantum field theory has an underlying functorial field theory which is defined on a suitable globally hyperbolic Lorentzian bordism pseudo-category. This means that globally hyperbolic Lorentzian bordisms between Cauchy surfaces arise naturally in the context of algebraic quantum field theory. The underlying functorial field theory encodes the time evolution of the original theory, but not its spatially local structure. As an illustrative application of these results, the algebraic and functorial descriptions of a free scalar quantum field are compared in detail.

Higher Geometric Structures on Manifolds and the Gauge Theory of Deligne Cohomology

We study smooth higher symmetry groups and moduli $\infty$-stacks of generic higher geometric structures on manifolds. Symmetries are automorphisms which cover non-trivial diffeomorphisms of the base manifold. We construct the smooth higher symmetry group of any geometric structure on $M$ and show that this completely classifies, via a universal property, equivariant structures on the higher geometry. We construct moduli stacks of higher geometric data as $\infty$-categorical quotients by the action of the higher symmetries, extract information about the homotopy types of these moduli $\infty$-stacks, and prove a helpful sufficient criterion for when two such higher moduli stacks are equivalent. In the second part of the paper we study higher $\mathrm{U}(1)$-connections. First, we observe that higher connections come organised into higher groupoids, which further carry affine actions by Baez-Crans-type higher vector spaces. We compute a presentation of the higher gauge actions for $n$-gerbes with $k$-connection, comment on the relation to higher-form symmetries, and present a new String group model. We construct smooth moduli $\infty$-stacks of higher Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell solutions, correcting previous such considerations in the literature, and compute the homotopy groups of several moduli $\infty$-stacks of higher $\mathrm{U}(1)$- connections. Finally, we show that a discrepancy between two approaches to the differential geometry of NSNS supergravity (via generalised and higher geometry, respectively) vanishes at the level of moduli $\infty$-stacks of NSNS supergravity solutions.

An $\infty$-categorical localisation functor for diagrams of simplicial sets

Associated to each small category $C$, there is a category of $C$-shaped diagrams of simplicial sets and an $\infty$-category of $NC$-shaped homotopy coherent diagrams of spaces. We present a functor which exhibits the latter as the $\infty$-categorical localisation of the former at the objectwise weak homotopy equivalences. This builds on a Quillen equivalence between the projective and covariant model structures associated to $C$ due to Heuts-Moerdijk, as well as Cisinski's theory of $\infty$-categorical localisations. We use the localisation functor to give simplified proofs that the left (resp. right) homotopy Kan extension of diagrams of simplicial sets presents the $\infty$-categorical left (resp. right) Kan extension of coherent diagrams of spaces.

Smooth 2-Group Extensions and Symmetries of Bundle Gerbes

We study bundle gerbes on manifolds $M$ that carry an action of a connected Lie group $G$. We show that these data give rise to a smooth 2-group extension of $G$ by the smooth 2-group of hermitean line bundles on $M$. This 2-group extension classifies equivariant structures on the bundle gerbe, and its non-triviality poses an obstruction to the existence of equivariant structures. We present a new global approach to the parallel transport of a bundle gerbe with connection, and use it to give an alternative construction of this smooth 2-group extension in terms of a homotopy-coherent version of the associated bundle construction. We apply our results to give new descriptions of nonassociative magnetic translations in quantum mechanics and the Faddeev-Mickelsson-Shatashvili anomaly in quantum field theory. We also propose a definition of smooth string 2-group models within our geometric framework. Starting from a basic gerbe on a compact simply-connected Lie group $G$, we prove that the smooth 2-group extensions of $G$ arising from our construction provide new models for the string group of $G$.

Gerbes in Geometry, Field Theory, and Quantisation

This is a mostly self-contained survey article about bundle gerbes and some of their recent applications in geometry, field theory, and quantisation. We cover the definition of bundle gerbes with connection and their morphisms, and explain the classification of bundle gerbes with connection in terms of differential cohomology. We then survey how the surface holonomy of bundle gerbes combines with their transgression line bundles to yield a smooth bordism-type field theory. Finally, we exhibit the use of bundle gerbes in geometric quantisation of 2-plectic as well as 1- and 2-shifted symplectic forms. This generalises earlier applications of gerbes to the prequantisation of quasi-symplectic groupoids.

Smooth Functorial Field Theories from B-Fields and D-Branes

In the Lagrangian approach to 2-dimensional sigma models, B-fields and D-branes contribute topological terms to the action of worldsheets of both open and closed strings. We show that these terms naturally fit into a 2-dimensional, smooth open-closed functorial field theory (FFT) in the sense of Atiyah, Segal, and Stolz-Teichner. We give a detailed construction of this smooth FFT, based on the definition of a suitable smooth bordism category. In this bordism category, all manifolds are equipped with a smooth map to a spacetime target manifold. Further, the object manifolds are allowed to have boundaries; these are the endpoints of open strings stretched between D-branes. The values of our FFT are obtained from the B-field and its D-branes via transgression. Our construction generalises work of Bunke-Turner-Willerton to include open strings. At the same time, it generalises work of Moore-Segal about open-closed TQFTs to include target spaces. We provide a number of further features of our FFT: we show that it depends functorially on the B-field and the D-branes, we show that it is thin homotopy invariant, and we show that it comes equipped with a positive reflection structure in the sense of Freed-Hopkins. Finally, we describe how our construction is related to the classification of open-closed TQFTs obtained by Lauda-Pfeiffer.

Principal $\infty$-Bundles and Smooth String Group Models

We provide a general, homotopy-theoretic definition of string group models within an $\infty$-category of smooth spaces, and we present new smooth models for the string group. Here, a smooth space is a presheaf of $\infty$-groupoids on the category of cartesian spaces. The key to our definition and construction of smooth string group models is a version of the singular complex functor, which assigns to a smooth space an underlying ordinary space. We provide new characterisations of principal $\infty$-bundles and group extensions in $\infty$-topoi, building on work of Nikolaus, Schreiber, and Stevenson. These insights allow us to transfer the definition of string group extensions from the $\infty$-category of spaces to the $\infty$-category of smooth spaces. Finally, we consider smooth higher-categorical group extensions that arise as obstructions to the existence of equivariant structures on gerbes. We show that these extensions give rise to new smooth models for the string group, as recently conjectured in joint work with M\"uller and Szabo.

The $\mathbb{R}$-Local Homotopy Theory of Smooth Spaces

Simplicial presheaves on cartesian spaces provide a general notion of smooth spaces. There is a corresponding smooth version of the singular complex functor, which maps smooth spaces to simplicial sets. We consider the localisation of the (projective or injective) model category of smooth spaces at the morphisms which become weak equivalences under the singular complex functor. We prove that this localisation agrees with a motivic-style $\mathbb{R}$-localisation of the model category of smooth spaces. Further, we exhibit the singular complex functor for smooth spaces as one of several Quillen equivalences between model categories for spaces and the above $\mathbb{R}$-local model category of smooth spaces. In the process, we show that the singular complex functor agrees with the homotopy colimit functor up to a natural zig-zag of weak equivalences. We provide a functorial fibrant replacement in the $\mathbb{R}$-local model category of smooth spaces and use this to compute mapping spaces in terms of singular complexes. Finally, we explain the relation of our fibrant replacement to the concordance sheaf construction introduced recently by Berwick-Evans, Boavida de Brito and Pavlov.

Sheaves of Higher Categories on Generalised Spaces

We study the homotopy right Kan extension of homotopy sheaves on a category to its free cocompletion, i.e. to its category of presheaves. Any pretopology on the original category induces a canonical pretopology of generalised coverings on the free cocompletion. We show that with respect to these pretopologies the homotopy right Kan extension along the Yoneda embedding preserves homotopy sheaves valued in (sufficiently nice) simplicial model categories. Moreover, we show that this induces an equivalence between sheaves of spaces on the original category and colimit-preserving sheaves of spaces on its free cocompletion. We present three applications in geometry and topology: first, we prove that diffeological vector bundles descend along subductions of diffeological spaces. Second, we deduce that various flavours of bundle gerbes with connection satisfy $(\infty,2)$-categorical descent. Finally, we investigate smooth diffeomorphism actions in smooth bordism-type field theories on a manifold. We show how these smooth actions allow us to extract the values of a field theory on any object coherently from its values on generating objects of the bordism category.

Topological Insulators and the Kane-Mele Invariant: Obstruction and Localisation Theory

We present homotopy theoretic and geometric interpretations of the Kane-Mele invariant for gapped fermionic quantum systems in three dimensions with time-reversal symmetry. We show that the invariant is related to a certain 4-equivalence which lends it an interpretation as an obstruction to a block decomposition of the sewing matrix up to nonequivariant homotopy. We prove a Mayer-Vietoris Theorem for manifolds with $\mathbb{Z}_2$-actions which intertwines Real and $\mathbb{Z}_2$-equivariant de Rham cohomology groups, and apply it to derive a new localisation formula for the Kane-Mele invariant. This provides a unified cohomological explanation for the equivalence between the discrete Pfaffian formula and the known local geometric computations of the index for periodic lattice systems. We build on the relation between the Kane-Mele invariant and the theory of bundle gerbes with $\mathbb{Z}_2$-actions to obtain geometric refinements of this obstruction and localisation technique. In the preliminary part we review the Freed-Moore theory of band insulators on Galilean spacetimes with emphasis on geometric constructions, and present a bottom-up approach to time-reversal symmetric topological phases.

Geometry and 2-Hilbert Space for Nonassociative Magnetic Translations

We suggest a geometric approach to quantisation of the twisted Poisson structure underlying the dynamics of charged particles in fields of generic smooth distributions of magnetic charge, and dually of closed strings in locally non-geometric flux backgrounds, which naturally allows for representations of nonassociative magnetic translation operators. We show how one can use the 2-Hilbert space of sections of a bundle gerbe in a putative framework for canonical quantisation. We define a parallel transport on bundle gerbes on $\mathbb{R}^d$ and show that it naturally furnishes weak projective 2-representations of the translation group on this 2-Hilbert space. We obtain a notion of covariant derivative on a bundle gerbe and a novel perspective on the fake curvature condition.

Transgression of D-branes

Closed strings can be seen either as one-dimensional objects in a target space or as points in the free loop space. Correspondingly, a B-field can be seen either as a connection on a gerbe over the target space, or as a connection on a line bundle over the loop space. Transgression establishes an equivalence between these two perspectives. Open strings require D-branes: submanifolds equipped with vector bundles twisted by the gerbe. In this paper we develop a loop space perspective on D-branes. It involves bundles of simple Frobenius algebras over the branes, together with bundles of bimodules over spaces of paths connecting two branes. We prove that the classical and our new perspectives on D-branes are equivalent. Further, we compare our loop space perspective to Moore-Segal/Lauda-Pfeiffer data for open-closed 2-dimensional topological quantum field theories, and exhibit it as a smooth family of reflection-positive, colored knowledgable Frobenius algebras.
