Weak gravity (and other conjectures) with broken supersymmetry

We study the weak gravity conjecture in non-supersymmetric string theory setups. Precisely, those are type I string theory with supersymmetry broken à la Scherk-Schwarz and open strings on D branes wrapped around magnetized tori in type II string theory. We compute long-range interactions between identical branes at one-loop and compare them to the weak gravity conjecture for higher-degree forms. In our examples, SUSY breaking generates interactions between branes, which are not anymore BPS, in such a way that the weak gravity conjecture is verified. In type I with the Scherk-Schwarz mechanism, the tension of the branes is reduced by one-loop quantum effects, so that there are long-range repulsive forces. The correlation of the non-vanishing brane potential with the presence of a running modulus and of possible D branes bound states nicely connects to other swampland conjectures. For magnetized branes in type II strings, we check that non-BPS branes experience a long-range repulsion whenever the open string spectrum is tachyon-free. Ultimately, the role of stringy objects in the discussion makes it compelling to further understand swampland conjectures in strings with broken SUSY, let alone their phenomenological relevance.

Infinite Black Hole Entropies at Infinite Distances and Tower of States

The aim of this paper is to elucidate a close connection between the black hole area law and the infinite distance conjecture in the context of the swampland. We consider families of black hole geometries, parametrized by their event horizon areas or by the values of their entropies, and show that the infinite entropy limit is always at infinite distance in the space of black hole geometries. It then follows from the infinite distance conjecture that there must be a tower of states in the infinite entropy limit, and that ignoring these towers on the horizon of the black hole would invalidate the effective theory when the entropy becomes large. We call this the black hole entropy distance conjecture. We then study two candidates for the tower of states. The first are the Kaluza-Klein modes of the internal geometry of extremal ${\cal N}=2$ black holes in string theory, whose masses on the horizon are fixed by the ${\cal N}=2$ attractor formalism, and given in terms of the black hole charges similarly to the entropy. However, we observe that it is possible to decouple their masses from the entropy, so that they cannot generically play the role of the tower. We thus consider a second kind of states: inspired by N-portrait quantum models of non-extremal black holes, we argue that the Goldstone-like modes that interpolate among the black hole microstates behave like the expected light tower of states.

Uplifting Runaways

We find a mechanism by which antibranes placed in a warped deformed conifold throat can destroy the stabilization of the size of the sphere at the tip, collapsing it to zero size. This conifold destabilization mechanism can be avoided by turning on a large amount of flux on the sphere, but tadpole cancelation makes this incompatible with a hierarchy of scales in a Type IIB flux compactification. This indicates that antibrane uplift cannot be used to construct stable de Sitter vacua with a small cosmological constant in perturbative String Theory. The values of V and V' for these KKLT-like scenarios can be parametrically small, but we find that V'/V is still consistent with the de Sitter swampland conjecture. Our results also suggest that there should exist a Klebanov-Strassler black hole, holographically dual to a deconfined phase with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry.

Throat destabilization (for profit and for fun)

Two recent results indicate that the addition of supersymmetry-breaking ingredients can destabilize the Klebanov-Strassler warped deformed conifold throat. The first comes from an analytic treatment of the interaction between anti-D3 branes and the complex-structure modulus corresponding to the deformation of the conifold [arXiv:1809.06861]. The second comes from the numeric construction of Klebanov-Strassler black holes [arXiv:1809.08484], which stop existing above a certain value of the non-extremality. We show that in both calculations the destabilization energies have the same parametric dependence on $g_s$ and the conifold flux, and only differ by a small numerical factor. This remarkable match confirms that anti-D3 brane uplift can only work in warped throats that have an O(1000) contribution to the D3 tadpole.

Microstate geometries at a generic point in moduli space

We systematically study all supersymmetric solutions of six-dimensional (2,0) supergravity with a null isometry. In particular, every such solution with at least four real supersymmetries is also a supersymmetric solution of a (1,0) theory preserving the same absolute amount of supersymmetry. This implies that no genuinely new solutions of this type can be found in this framework. The microstate geometries associated to supersymmetric black holes within Mathur's proposal are generically supersymmetric solutions of six-dimensional supergravity. A direct consequence of our result is that supersymmetric microstate geometries of single centre supersymmetric black holes should carry only one compact 3-cycle.
