Fractional Hall Conductance of Laughlin States from a Topological Index

We provide a rigorous Laughlin-pump argument that establishes the fractional quantization of the Hall conductance directly from the Laughlin state as a topological index. Our proof uses a recently defined index of a pair of pure states together with an infinite matrix product state analysis that is rigorous on a sufficiently thin cylinder. By virtue of the connection to an index, our result implies, in particular, that Laughlin states are representatives of topologically stable fractional quantum Hall phases.

Mermin-Wagner theorems for quantum systems with multipole symmetries

We prove Mermin-Wagner-type theorems for quantum lattice systems in the presence of multipole symmetries. These theorems show that the presence of higher-order symmetries protects against the breaking of lower-order ones. In particular, we prove that the critical dimension in which the charge symmetry can be broken increases if the system admits higher multipole symmetries, e.g. $ d = 4 $ on the regular lattice $ \mathbb{Z}^d $ in the presence of dipole symmetry.

Fractional Quantum Hall States: Infinite Matrix Product Representation and its Implications

We present a novel matrix product representation of the Laughlin and related fractional quantum Hall wavefunctions based on a rigorous version of the correlators of a chiral quantum field theory. This representation enables the quantitative control of the coefficients of the Laughlin wavefunction times an arbitrary monomial symmetric polynomial when expanded in a Slater determinant or permanent basis. It renders the properties, such as factorization and the renewal structure, inherent in such fractional quantum Hall wavefunctions transparent. We prove bounds on the correlators of the chiral quantum field theory and utilize this representation to demonstrate the exponential decay of connected correlations and a gap in the entanglement spectrum on a thin cylinder.

Two-sided Lieb-Thirring bounds

We prove upper and lower bounds for the number of eigenvalues of semi-bounded Schrödinger operators in all spatial dimensions. As a corollary, we obtain two-sided estimates for the sum of the negative eigenvalues of atomic Hamiltonians with Kato potentials. Instead of being in terms of the potential itself, as in the usual Lieb-Thirring result, the bounds are in terms of the landscape function, also known as the torsion function, which is a solution of $(-Δ+ V +M)u_M =1$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$; here $M\in\mathbb{R}$ is chosen so that the operator is positive. We further prove that the infimum of $(u_M^{-1} - M)$ is a lower bound for the ground state energy $E_0$ and derive a simple iteration scheme converging to $E_0$.

Counting eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators using the landscape function

We prove an upper and a lower bound on the rank of the spectral projections of the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+ V$ in terms of the volume of the sublevel sets of an effective potential $\frac{1}{u}$. Here, $u$ is the `landscape function' of [(David, G., Filoche, M., & Mayboroda, S. (2021) Advances in Mathematics, 390, 107946)], namely a solution of $(-Δ+ V)u = 1$ in $\bbR^d$. We prove the result for non-negative potentials satisfying a Kato-type and a doubling condition, in all spatial dimensions, in infinite volume, and show that no coarse graining is required. Our result yields in particular a necessary and sufficient condition for discreteness of the spectrum. In the case of polynomial potentials, we prove that the spectrum is discrete if and only if no directional derivative vanishes identically.

Local to global principle over number fields for higher moments

The local to global principle for densities is a very convenient tool proposed by Poonen and Stoll to compute the density of a given subset of the integers. In this paper we provide an effective criterion to find all higher moments of the density (e.g. the mean, the variance) of a subset of a finite dimensional free module over the ring of algebraic integers of a number field. More precisely, we provide a local to global principle that allows the computation of all higher moments corresponding to the density, over a general number field $K$. This work advances the understanding of local to global principles for density computations in two ways: on one hand, it extends a result of Bright, Browning and Loughran, where they provide the local to global principle for densities over number fields; on the other hand, it extends the recent result on a local to global principle for expected values over the integers to both the ring of algebraic integers and to moments higher than the expected value. To show how effective and applicable our method is, we compute the density, mean and variance of Eisenstein polynomials and shifted Eisenstein polynomials over number fields. This extends (and fully covers) results in the literature that were obtained with ad-hoc methods.

Bogoliubov Theory for Trapped Bosons in the Gross-Pitaevskii Regime

We consider systems of $N$ bosons in $\mathbb{R}^3$, trapped by an external potential. The interaction is repulsive and has a scattering length of the order $N^{-1}$ (Gross-Pitaevskii regime). We determine the ground state energy and the low-energy excitation spectrum up to errors that vanish in the limit $N\to \infty$.

Bose-Einstein Condensation with Optimal Rate for Trapped Bosons in the Gross-Pitaevskii Regime

We consider a Bose gas consisting of $N$ particles in $\mathbb{R}^3$, trapped by an external field and interacting through a two-body potential with scattering length of order $N^{-1}$. We prove that low energy states exhibit complete Bose-Einstein condensation with optimal rate, generalizing previous work in \cite{BBCS1, BBCS4}, restricted to translation invariant systems. This extends recent results in \cite{NNRT}, removing the smallness assumption on the size of the scattering length.

Local to global principle for expected values

This paper constructs a new local to global principle for expected values over free $\mathbb{Z}$-modules of finite rank. In our strategy we use the same philosophy as Ekedhal's Sieve for densities, later extended and improved by Poonen and Stoll in their local to global principle for densities. We show that under some additional hypothesis on the system of $p$-adic subsets used in the principle, one can use $p$-adic measures also when one has to compute expected values (and not only densities). Moreover, we show that our additional hypotheses are sharp, in the sense that explicit counterexamples exist when any of them is missing. In particular, a system of $p$-adic subsets that works in the Poonen and Stoll principle is not guaranteed to work when one is interested in expected values instead of densities. Finally, we provide both new applications of the method, and immediate proofs for known results.
