Physically-Constrained Autoencoder-Assisted Bayesian Optimization for Refinement of High-Dimensional Defect-Sensitive Single Crystalline Structure

Physical properties and functionalities of materials are dictated by global crystal structures as well as local defects. To establish a structure-property relationship, not only the crystallographic symmetry but also quantitative knowledge about defects are required. Here we present a hybrid Machine Learning framework that integrates a physically-constrained variational-autoencoder (pcVAE) with different Bayesian Optimization (BO) methods to systematically accelerate and improve crystal structure refinement with resolution of defects. We chose the pyrochlore structured Ho2Ti2O7 as a model system and employed the GSAS2 package for benchmarking crystallographic parameters from Rietveld refinement. However, the function space of these material systems is highly nonlinear, which limits optimizers like traditional Rietveld refinement, into trapping at local minima. Also, these naive methods don't provide an extensive learning about the overall function space, which is essential for large space, large time consuming explorations to identify various potential regions of interest. Thus, we present the approach of exploring the high Dimensional structure parameters of defect sensitive systems via pretrained pcVAE assisted BO and Sparse Axis Aligned BO. The pcVAE projects high-Dimensional diffraction data consisting of thousands of independently measured diffraction orders into a lowD latent space while enforcing scaling invariance and physical relevance. Then via BO methods, we aim to minimize the L2 norm based chisq errors in the real and latent spaces separately between experimental and simulated diffraction patterns, thereby steering the refinement towards potential optimum crystal structure parameters. We investigated and compared the results among different pcVAE assisted BO, non pcVAE assisted BO, and Rietveld refinement.

Quantum paramagnetism in a non-Kramers rare-earth oxide: Monoclinic $\rm Pr_2Ti_2O_7$

Little is so far known about the magnetism of the $\rm A_2B_2O_7$ monoclinic layered perovskites that replace the spin-ice supporting pyrochlore structure for $r_A/r_B>1.78$. We show that high quality monoclinic Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ single crystals with a three-dimensional network of non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ ions that interact through edge-sharing super-exchange interactions, form a singlet ground state quantum paramagnet that does not undergo any magnetic phase transitions down to at least 1.8 K. The chemical phase stability, structure, and magnetic properties of the layered perovskite Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ were investigated using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and magnetization measurements. Synthesis of polycrystalline samples with the nominal compositions of Pr$_2$Ti$_{2+x}$O$_7$ ($-0.16 \leq x \leq 0.16$) showed that deviations from the Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ stoichiometry lead to secondary phases of related, structures including the perovskite phase Pr$_{2/3}$TiO$_3$ and the orthorhombic phases Pr$_4$Ti$_9$O$_{24}$ and Pr$_2$TiO$_5$. No indications of site disordering (stuffing and anti-stuffing) or vacancy defects were observed in the Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ majority phase. A procedure for growth of high-structural-quality, stoichiometric single crystals of Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ by the traveling solvent floating zone (TSFZ) method is reported. Thermo-magnetic measurements of single-crystalline Pr$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ reveal an isolated singlet ground state that we associate with the low symmetry crystal electric field environments that split the $2J+1=9$-fold degenerate spin-orbital multiplets of the four differently coordinated Pr$^{3+}$ ions into 36 isolated singlets resulting in an anisotropic temperature independent van-Vleck susceptibility at low $T$. A small isotropic Curie term is associated with 0.96(2)\% non-interacting Pr$^{4+}$ impurities.

Dynamical scaling as a signature of multiple phase competition in Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$

$\rm Yb_2Ti_2O_7$ is a celebrated example of a pyrochlore magnet with highly-frustrated, anisotropic exchange interactions. To date, attention has largely focused on its unusual, static properties, many of which can be understood as coming from the competition between different types of magnetic order. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering with exceptionally high energy resolution to explore the dynamical properties of $\rm Yb_2Ti_2O_7$. We find that spin correlations exhibit dynamical scaling, analogous to behavior found near to a quantum critical point. We show that the observed scaling collapse can be explained within a phenomenological theory of multiple--phase competition, and confirm that a scaling collapse is also seen in semi--classical simulations of a microscopic model of $\rm Yb_2Ti_2O_7$. These results suggest a general picture for dynamics in systems with competing ground states.

Bulk transport paths through defects in floating zone and Al flux grown SmB$_6$

We investigate the roles of disorder on low-temperature transport in SmB$_6$ crystals grown by both the Al flux and floating zone methods. We used the inverted resistance method with Corbino geometry to investigate whether low-temperature variations in the standard resistance plateau arises from a surface or a bulk channel in floating zone samples. The results show significant sample-dependent residual bulk conduction, in contrast to smaller amounts of residual bulk conduction previously observed in Al flux grown samples with Sm vacancies. We consider hopping in an activated impurity band as a possible source for the observed bulk conduction, but it is unlikely that the large residual bulk conduction seen in floating zone samples is solely due to Sm vacancies. We therefore propose that one-dimensional defects, or dislocations, contribute as well. Using chemical etching, we find evidence for dislocations in both flux and floating zone samples, with higher dislocation density in floating zone samples than in Al flux grown samples. In addition to the possibility of transport through one-dimensional dislocations, we also discuss our results in the context of recent theoretical models of SmB$_6$.

Superdislocations and point defects in pyrochlore Yb2Ti2O7 single crystals and implication on magnetic ground states

This study reports atomic-scale characterization of structural defects in Yb2Ti2O7, a pyrochlore oxide whose subtle magnetic interactions is prone to small perturbations. Due to discrepancies in the reported magnetic ground states, it has become a pressing issue to determine the nature of defects in this system. In the present study, we use atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques to identify the type of defects in the ytterbium titanate single crystals grown by the conventional optical floating zone (FZ) method. In addition to the known point defects of substitution Yb on Ti B-sites, extended defects such as dissociated superdislocations and anti-phase boundaries were discovered for the first time in this material. Such defects were prevalently observed in the FZ grown single crystals (of a darker color), in contrast to the stoichiometric white polycrystalline powders or high quality colorless single crystals grown by the traveling solvent floating zone (TSFZ) technique. The lattice strains from these extended defects result in distortions of Yb-tetrahedron. A change of Ti valance was not detected at the defects. Our findings provide new insights into understanding the nature of defects that are of great importance for the physical property studies of geometrically frustrated compounds. Furthermore, this work sheds light on the complicated core structure of superdislocations that have large Burgers vectors in oxides with complex unit cells.

The pyrochlore Ho2Ti2O7: Synthesis, crystal growth and stoichiometry

We have investigated the effect of synthesis and growth conditions on the magnetic, structural, and compositional properties of pyrochlore oxide holmium titanate and demonstrate a method for growing high quality stoichiometric single crystals. A series of polycrystalline samples with various contents of Ti (-0.08 \leqslant x \leqslant 0.08, and nominal compositions of Ho2Ti2+xO7) were synthesized at different temperatures, and characterized using powder X-ray diffraction. The results show that synthesizing powders at a higher temperature of 1500 °C yield single phase compounds. Ti deficient powders showed an increase of lattice constant due to stuffing (Ho into Ti positions), while Ti rich powders showed a decrease in lattice constant due to anti-stuffing (Ti into Ho positions). A post annealing in O2 was found to be necessary to accomplish the anti-stuffing process. Use of the conventional floating zone (FZ) technique introduced Ti deficiency, stuffing, and oxygen vacancies in the grown crystal. Growth of high structural quality and stoichiometric single crystals of Ho2Ti2O7 by the traveling solvent floating zone (TSFZ) is reported. AC susceptibility measurements revealed that the stoichiometric crystal shows a higher ice freezing temperature, indicating that crystal quality and stoichiometry play a key role on low temperature spin ice properties of this compound.

Lattice-Mediated Magnetic Order Melting in TbMnO3

Recent ultrafast magnetic-sensitive measurements [Phys. Rev. B 92, 184429 (2015) and Phys. Rev. B 96, 184414 (2017)] have revealed a delayed melting of the long-range cycloid spin-order in TbMnO$_3$ following photoexcitation across the fundamental Mott-Hubbard gap. The microscopic mechanism behind this slow transfer of energy from the photoexcited carriers to the spin degrees of freedom is still elusive and not understood. Here, we address this problem by combining spectroscopic ellipsometry, ultrafast broadband optical spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. Upon photoexcitation, we observe the emergence of a complex collective response, which is due to high-energy coherent optical phonons coupled to the out-of-equilibrium charge density. This response precedes the magnetic order melting and is interpreted as the fingerprint of the formation of anti-Jahn Teller polarons. We propose that the charge localization in a long-lived self-trapped state hinders the emission of magnons and other spin-flip mechanisms, causing the energy transfer from the charge to the spin system to be mediated by the reorganization of the lattice. Furthermore, we provide evidence for the coherent excitation of a phonon mode associated with the ferroelectric phase transition.

Dynamic pathway of the photoinduced phase transition of TbMnO$_3$

We investigate the demagnetization dynamics of the cycloidal and sinusoidal phases of multiferroic TbMnO$_3$ by means of time-resolved resonant soft x-ray diffraction following excitation by an optical pump. Using orthogonal linear x-ray polarizations, we suceeded in disentangling the response of the multiferroic cycloidal spin order from the sinusoidal antiferromagnetic order in the time domain. This enables us to identify the transient magnetic phase created by intense photoexcitation of the electrons and subsequent heating of the spin system on a picosecond timescale. The transient phase is shown to be a spin density wave, as in the adiabatic case, which nevertheless retains the wave vector of the cycloidal long range order. Two different pump photon energies, 1.55 eV and 3.1 eV, lead to population of the conduction band predominantly via intersite $d$-$d$ transitions or intrasite $p$-$d$ transitions, respectively. We find that the nature of the optical excitation does not play an important role in determining the dynamics of magnetic order melting. Further, we observe that the orbital reconstruction, which is induced by the spin ordering, disappears on a timescale comparable to that of the cycloidal order, attesting to a direct coupling between magnetic and orbital orders. Our observations are discussed in the context of recent theoretical models of demagnetization dynamics in strongly correlated systems, revealing the potential of this type of measurement as a benchmark for such complex theoretical studies.

Growth and Characterization of Iron Scandium Sulfide (FeSc2S4)

Here we report successful growth of mm scale single crystals of stoichiometric FeSc2S4. Single crystal X-ray diffraction yields a cubic structure, spacegroup Fd-3m, with a=10.5097(2) angstroms at T=110(2) K consistent with previous literature on polycrystallin samples. Models fit to the data reveal no detectable antisite mixing or deviations from the ideal stoichiometry. Heat capacity and dc magnetization measurements on the single crystals match those of high quality powder specimens. The novel traveling solvent growth method presented in this work opens the door to studies requiring sizable single crystals of the candidate spin-orbital liquid FeSc2S4.
