A New Entropy Puzzle in ABJM

We point out a puzzle about BPS black holes in AdS$_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_k$: the entropy grows when $k$ increases although the number of gauge-invariant operators in the dual conformal field theory that can contribute to the entropy grows as $k$ decreases, due to the presence of monopole operators. Analyzing the superconformal index of ABJM, we show that the same puzzle exists for finite $N$ in the large charge limit. We propose a resolution based on an increasing number of trace relations as $k$ decreases, which dominates over the other effect. We argue that this mostly affects fortuitous operators and we provide an explicit example of a fortuitous operator that disappears at small $k$.

Constant Maps and Exponentially Small Sectors in ABJM Bethe Observables

The topologically twisted index of ABJM theory captures the microscopic entropy of magnetically charged supersymmetric $\mathrm{AdS}_4$ black holes. Building on the companion Letter arXiv:2608.04107, which reconstructed the finite-rank twisted superpotential at the universal twist, we determine the finite-rank index using high-precision Bethe-vacuum data, physics-informed symbolic regression, and integer relations. The Hessian, effective dilaton, and one-loop factors encode information beyond the on-shell twisted superpotential. The two observables share the same shifted rank. Within a declared finite class, we reconstruct the index constant map from the ABJM $S^3$ constant maps at levels $k$ and $k/2$, the constant map of the twisted superpotential, and elementary terms. We prove that it equals a convergent one-kernel integral for real $k>0$, resumming the large-$k$ expansion, fixing a previously numerical constant, and yielding type-IIA coefficients at arbitrary genus. We also prove that the Clausen expression in arXiv:2608.04107 equals an alternating Euler sum and an absolutely convergent integral, giving closed evaluations for two rational-argument Euler-sum families. At $k=1,2,4$, the exponentially suppressed sectors exhibit arithmetic structure. The reconstructed coefficients of the twisted superpotential obey a divisor-sum formula with a conjectural all-order Eichler-integral series associated with a weight-four Eisenstein form. The index coefficients reduce to two rational generators; one admits modular-product formulas reproducing every available coefficient and suggesting an all-order completion. Conditional on this continuation, modular transformations determine the nearest logarithmic singularity, radius of convergence, and leading coefficient growth. These results provide a finite-$N$ benchmark for quantum gravitational blocks and bulk black hole quantum entropy.

Exact Modular Completion of the ABJM Effective Twisted Superpotential

The effective twisted superpotential governs the supersymmetric partition functions of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories in the Cardy limit and, at large $N$, the gravitational blocks that are glued into the entropy function of supersymmetric $\mathrm{AdS}_4$ black holes. We determine its on-shell structure for $\mathrm{U}(N)_k\times\mathrm{U}(N)_{-k}$ ABJM theory at the universal twist, using a machine-learning discovery pipeline---physics-informed symbolic regression with integer-relation detection---applied to Bethe-vacuum data of up to $800$ digits. Its perturbative part terminates after two terms, a shifted-rank $3/2$-power and an $N$-independent constant map, which we obtain in closed form for every integer level. Its type-IIA genus expansion admits a closed coefficient formula at arbitrary genus, involving binomial and Bernoulli-number terms, and is asymptotic. For $k=1,2,4$ the entire finite-$N$ remainder is a single absolutely convergent divisor-sum $q$-series, obtained by applying a first-order differential operator to the Eichler integral of a weight-four Eisenstein series on $Γ_0(2)$ or $Γ_0(4)$. This closed form reproduces the data to $\sim\!10^{-797}$.

Large-$N$ Free Energy of Chiral $\mathcal{N}=2$ Chern-Simons-Matter Theories

We present the first successful large-$N$ computation of the $S^3$ free energy in chiral $\mathcal{N}=2$ Chern-Simons-matter theories, long believed to evade the universal M2-brane scaling $F_{S^3}\!\sim\!N^{3/2}$. Using a stable numerical continuation method that directly solves the saddle-point equations, we obtain convergent large-$N$ solutions for benchmark chiral quivers, including the holographic dual to AdS$_4\times Q^{1,1,1}/\mathbb{Z}_k$ and $D_3$ models. The resulting free energies precisely match the holographic predictions, resolving a decade-old puzzle in AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$ and establishing a practical numerical framework for precision holography in strongly coupled gauge theories.

$\mathcal{I}$-extremization with baryonic charges

We propose an entropy function for AdS$_4$ BPS black holes in M-theory with general magnetic charges, resolving in particular a long-standing puzzle about baryonic charges. The entropy function is constructed from a gravitational block defined solely in terms of topological data of the internal manifold. We show that the entropy of twisted black holes can always be reformulated as an $\mathcal{I}$-extremization problem -- even in cases where existing large-$N$ field theory computations fail to provide an answer. Furthermore, we correctly reproduce the entropy for a class of known black holes with purely baryonic magnetic charges. Our results offer both a conjecture for the general gravitational block for AdS$_4$ black holes in M-theory and a prediction for the large-$N$ limit of several partition functions whose saddle points have yet to be found.

$\mathcal{I}$-Extremization for AdS$_4$ Black Holes: Master Volume, Free Energy, and Baryonic Charges

In a previous paper, we proposed an entropy function for AdS$_4$ BPS black holes in M-theory with general magnetic charges, resolving a long-standing puzzle about baryonic charges in three-dimensional holography and offering a prediction for the large-$N$ limit of several partition functions whose saddle points have yet to be found. The entropy function is constructed from the master volume of the internal manifold. In this paper, we prove that the entropy of a general class of black holes based on toric geometry can indeed be reformulated as an $\mathcal{I}$-extremization problem, and we provide a set of examples. As an aside, we also simplify existing proofs of the equivalence between $a$-, $c$-, and $F$-extremizations and their gravitational duals.

Microstates of accelerating and supersymmetric AdS$_4$ black holes from the spindle index

We provide a first principles derivation of the microscopic entropy of a very general class of supersymmetric, rotating and accelerating black holes in AdS$_4$. This is achieved by analysing the large-$N$ limit of the spindle index and completes the construction of the first example of a holographic duality involving supersymmetric field theories defined on orbifolds with conical singularities.

Gravitational Blocks: Symplectic Covariance Unveiled

By working in a symplectically covariant real formulation of special Kähler geometry, we propose and give strong evidence for a canonical BPS partition function for AdS$_2 \times_w M_2$ near-horizon geometries with arbitrary rotation and generic magnetic and electric charges. Here, $M_2$ is either a two-sphere or a spindle. We also show that how the attractor equations and the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy can be obtained from an extremization principle.

The large $N$ limit of topologically twisted indices: a direct approach

We study the large $N$ limit of the refined topologically twisted index of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ gauge theories with a holographic dual, which is relevant for counting the number of microstates of rotating, magnetically charged and twisted AdS$_4$ black holes. As a difference with previous computations, we perform a direct saddle point analysis of the relevant matrix model. Among other things we explicitly identify the distribution of gauge magnetic fluxes that contributes at large $N$. The index exhibits a large $N$ factorized form in agreement with the supergravity expectations based on gravitational blocks and correctly reproduces the entropy of magnetically charged rotating AdS$_4 \times S^7$ black holes.

4d F(4) gauged supergravity and black holes of class $\mathcal{F}$

We perform a consistent reduction of 6d matter-coupled F(4) supergravity on a compact Riemann surface $Σ_\mathfrak{g}$ of genus $\mathfrak{g}$, at the level of the bosonic action. The result is an $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauged supergravity coupled to two vector multiplets and a single hypermultiplet. The four-dimensional model is holographically dual to the 3d superconformal field theories of class $\mathcal{F}$, describing different brane systems in massive type IIA and IIB wrapped on $Σ_\mathfrak{g}$. The naive reduction leads to a non-standard 4d mixed duality frame with both electric and magnetic gauge fields, as well as a massive tensor, that can be only described in the embedding tensor formalism. Upon a chain of electromagnetic dualities, we are able to determine the scalar manifolds and electric gaugings that uniquely specify the model in the standard supergravity frame. We then use the result to construct the first examples of static dyonic black holes in AdS$_6$ and perform a microscopic counting of their entropy via the 5d topologically twisted index. Finally, we show the existence of further subtruncations to the massless sector of the 4d theory, such as the Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged $T^3$ model and minimal gauged supergravity. We are in turn able to find new asymptotically AdS$_4$ solutions, providing predictions for the squashed $S^3$ partition functions and the superconformal and refined twisted indices of class $\mathcal{F}$ theories.

The joy of factorization at large $N$: five-dimensional indices and AdS black holes

We discuss the large $N$ factorization properties of five-dimensional supersymmetric partition functions for CFT with a holographic dual. We consider partition functions on manifolds of the form $\mathcal{M}= \mathcal{M}_3 \times S^2_ε$, where $ε$ is an equivariant parameter for rotation. We show that, when $\mathcal{M}_3$ is a squashed three-sphere, the large $N$ partition functions can be obtained by gluing elementary blocks associated with simple physical quantities. The same is true for various observables of the theories on $\mathcal{M}_3=Σ_\mathfrak{g} \times S^1$, where $Σ_\mathfrak{g}$ is a Riemann surface of genus $\mathfrak{g}$, and, with a natural assumption on the form of the saddle point, also for the partition function, corresponding to either the topologically twisted index or a mixed one. This generalizes results in three and four dimensions and correctly reproduces the entropy of known black objects in AdS$_6 \times_{w} S^4$ and AdS$_7\times S^4$. We also provide the supersymmetric background and explicitly perform localization for the mixed index on $Σ_\mathfrak{g} \times S^1 \times S^2_ε$, filling a gap in the literature.

Rotating multi-charge spindles and their microstates

Some AdS$_3 \times M_7$ type IIB vacua have been recently proposed to arise from D3-branes wrapped on a spindle, a sphere with conical singularities at the poles. We explicitly construct a generalization of these solutions corresponding to a class of electrically charged and rotating supersymmetric black strings in AdS$_5 \times S^5$ with general magnetic fluxes on the spindle. We then perform a counting of their microstates using the charged Cardy formula. To this purpose, we derive the general form of the anomaly polynomial of the dual $\mathcal{N} = (0 , 2)$ CFT in two dimensions and we show that it can be obtained via a simple gluing procedure.

Universal AdS black holes in theories with sixteen supercharges and their microstates

We provide a universal microscopic counting for the microstates of the asymptotically AdS black holes and black strings that arise as solutions of the half-maximal gauged supergravity in four and five dimensions. These solutions can be embedded in all M-theory and type II string backgrounds with an AdS vacuum and sixteen supercharges and provide an infinite set of examples dual to $\mathcal{N}=2$ and $\mathcal{N}=4$ conformal field theories in four and three dimensions, respectively. The counting is universal and it is performed by either studying the large $N$ limit of the relevant supersymmetric index of the dual field theory or by using the charged Cardy formula.

Anomalies, Black strings and the charged Cardy formula

We derive the general anomaly polynomial for a class of two-dimensional CFTs arising as twisted compactifications of a higher-dimensional theory on compact manifolds $\mathcal{M}_d$, including the contribution of the isometries of $\mathcal{M}_d$. We then use the result to perform a counting of microstates for electrically charged and rotating supersymmetric black strings in AdS$_5\times S^5$ and AdS$_7\times S^4$ with horizon topology BTZ$ \ltimes S^2$ and BTZ$ \ltimes S^2 \times Σ_\mathfrak{g}$, respectively, where $Σ_\mathfrak{g}$ is a Riemann surface. We explicitly construct the latter class of solutions by uplifting a class of four-dimensional rotating black holes. We provide a microscopic explanation of the entropy of such black holes by using a charged version of the Cardy formula.

Microstates of rotating AdS$_5$ strings

We provide a general formula for the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories living on the world-volume of D3-branes at conical Calabi-Yau singularities in the Cardy limit. The index is defined as the partition function on $T^2 \times S^2_ω$, with a partial topological twist and a $Ω$-deformation along $S^2$, in the presence of background magnetic fluxes and fugacities for the global symmetries and can be used to study the properties of a class of BPS black strings. To this purpose, we find rotating domain-wall solutions of five-dimensional gauged supergravity interpolating between AdS$_5$ and a near horizon region consisting of a warped fibration of BTZ over a sphere. We explicitly construct rotating domain-walls that can be embedded in AdS$_5 \times S^5$ by uplifting a class of four-dimensional rotating black holes. We then provide a microscopic explanation of the entropy of such black holes by using the refined topologically twisted index of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills.

Gluing gravitational blocks for AdS black holes

We provide a unifying entropy functional and an extremization principle for black holes and black strings in AdS$_4\times S^7$ and AdS$_5\times S^5$ with arbitrary rotation and generic electric and magnetic charges. This is done by gluing gravitational blocks, basic building blocks that are directly inspired by the holomorphic blocks appearing in the factorization of supersymmetric partition functions in three and four dimensions. We also provide an explicit realization of the attractor mechanism by identifying the values of the scalar fields at the horizon with the critical points of the entropy functional. We give examples based on dyonic rotating black holes with a twist in AdS$_4\times S^7$, rotating black strings in AdS$_5\times S^5$, dyonic Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4\times S^7$ and Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_5\times S^5$. In particular, our entropy functional extends existing results by adding rotation to the twisted black holes in AdS$_4$ and by adding flavor magnetic charges for the Kerr-Newman black holes in AdS$_4$. We also discuss generalizations to higher-dimensional black objects.

Supersymmetric Rényi entropy and charged hyperbolic black holes

The supersymmetric Rényi entropy across a spherical entangling surface in a $d$-dimensional SCFT with flavor defects is equivalent to a supersymmetric partition function on $\mathbb{H}^{d-1} \times \mathbb{S}^1$, which can be computed exactly using localization. We consider the holographically dual BPS solutions in $(d +1)$-dimensional matter coupled supergravity $(d = 3 , 5)$, which are charged hyperbolically sliced AdS black holes. We compute the renormalized on-shell action and the holographic supersymmetric Rényi entropy and show a perfect match with the field theory side. Our setup allows a direct map between the chemical potentials for the global symmetries of the field theories and those of the gravity solutions. We also discuss a simple case where angular momentum is added.

Black hole microstate counting in Type IIB from 5d SCFTs

We use recently established AdS$_6$/CFT$_5$ dualities to count the microstates of magnetically charged AdS$_6 \times S^2 \times Σ$ black holes in Type IIB. The near-horizon limit is described by solutions with AdS$_2 \times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}_1} \times Σ_{\mathfrak{g}_2} \times S^2 \times Σ$ geometry, where $Σ_{\mathfrak{g}_i}$ are Riemann surfaces of constant curvature and $Σ$ is a further Riemann surface over which the geometry is warped. Our results show that the topologically twisted indices of the proposed dual superconformal field theories precisely reproduce the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of this class of black holes. This provides further support for a prescription to compute five-dimensional topologically twisted indices put forth recently, and for the proposed dualities. We confirm the $N^4$ scaling found in the sphere partition functions and extend previous matches of sphere partition functions to AdS$_6$ solutions with monodromy.
