Chang'e 7 Lunar Lander Optical Camera-Telescope: Optical Astronomy from the Moon

We report the design and manufacture of a new, lightweight, wide-field, optical camera-telescope on board the Chang'e 7 lunar mission (launched in August 2026 and due for lunar touchdown in late November 2026). The camera is capable of static, panchromatic imagery within a $420-696~nm$ optical wavelength range. The camera was designed and built under the small lunar astronomy observation station program of the Chinese National Space Agency (CNSA) as a collaboration between the International Lunar Observatory Association of Hawaii (ILOA), the Laboratory for Space Research (LSR) of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Beijing Institute of Space Mechanics and Electricity (BISME). The camera has been built to meet science goals of the mission for sustainable astronomical operation over a large range of temperatures from the Moon's south pole. We report on the design and ground based preliminary performance, together with an analysis of the camera's simulated output to indicate the range of astronomical observations possible from the lunar surface given the camera's limited sensitivity and angular resolution given the modest aperture and wide field of view.

Morphological study of the nested planetary nebula Hubble 12

We present a visible-infrared imaging study of young planetary nebula (PN) Hubble 12 (Hb 12; PN G111.8-02.8) obtained with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archival data and our own Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) measurements. Deep HST and CFHT observations of this nebula reveal three pairs of bipolar structures and an arc-shaped filament near the western waist of Hb 12. The existence of nested bipolar lobes together with the presence of H2 knots suggests that these structures originated from several mass-ejection events during the pre-PN phase. To understand the intrinsic structures of Hb 12, a three-dimensional model enabling the visualisation of this PN at various orientations was constructed. The modelling results show that Hb 12 may resemble other nested hourglass nebulae, such as Hen 2-320 and M 2-9, suggesting that this type of PN may be common and the morphologies of PNs are not so diverse as is shown by their visual appearances. The infrared spectra show that this PN has a mixed chemistry. We discuss the possible material that may cause the unidentified infrared emissions. The analyses of the infrared spectra and the spectral energy distribution suggest the existence of a cool companion in the nucleus of this object.

It Remains a Cage: Ionization Tolerance of C60 Fullerene in Planetary Nebulae

We demonstrate that by combining two robust theoretical quantum chemistry calculation techniques, stepwise ionization of C60 fullerene by UV and extreme UV photons can in principle occur up to a limit as high as q=+26 before coulomb explosion of the cage. Furthermore, these highly ionized forms exhibit a comparable structural and bonding stability as for the neutral fullerene. Certain astrophysical sources like the central stars of planetary nebulae and the hottest white dwarf stars have sufficiently hard UV radiation fields that can result in a series of highly charged C60(q+) species from q=1 up to q=16. Harsher environments, like hot X-ray bubbles in planetary nebulae, X-ray binaries and other sources, may further push the ionization right up to the q=+26 limit. These remarkable theoretical findings add new avenues to complex ion/molecule reactions, the chemistry of fragmentation products and additional pathways for spreading carbon throughout the universe. The implications for the emerging field of astrochemistry of C60 fullerene in all its possible states could be profound.

A Theoretical Investigation of the Possible Detection of C24 in Space

Astronomical infrared spectral features at ~6.6, 9.8 and 20 micronm have recently been suggested as being due to the planar graphene form of C24 carbon cluster. Here we report density functional theory and coupled cluster calculations on wavefunctions stability, relative energies, and infrared spectra of four different types of C24 isomers, including the graphene and fullerene forms. The types of vibrational motions under these bands are also discussed. Among the four isomers, we find that the astronomical data are best approximated by the graphene form of C24.

The Astrochemistry Implications of Quantum Chemical Normal Modes Vibrational Analysis

Understanding the molecular vibrations underlying each of the unknown infrared emission (UIE) bands (such as those found at 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 6.2, 6.9, 7.7, 11.3, 15.8, 16.4, 18.9 mm) observed in or towards astronomical objects is a vital link to uncover the molecular identity of their carriers. This is usually done by customary classifications of normal mode frequencies such as stretching, deformation, rocking, wagging, skeletal mode, etc. A large literature on this subject exists and since 1952 ambiguities in classifications of normal modes via this empirical approach were pointed out by Morino and Kuchitsu [1]. New ways of interpretation and analyzing vibrational spectra were sought within the theoretical framework of quantum chemistry [2,3]. Many of these methods cannot easily be applied [3] to the large, complex molecular systems which are one of the key research interests of astrochemistry. In considering this demand, a simple and new method of analyzing and classifying the normal mode vibrational motions of molecular systems was introduced [4]. This approach is a fully quantitative method of analysis of normal mode displacement vector matrices and classification of the characteristic frequencies (fundamentals) underlying the observed IR bands. Outcomes of applying such an approach show some overlap with customary empirical classifications, usually at short wavelengths. It provides a quantitative breakdown of a complex vibration (at longer wavelengths) into the contributed fragments like their aromatic or aliphatic components. In addition, in molecular systems outside the classical models of chemical bonds and structures where the empirical approach cannot be applied, this quantitative method enables an interpretation of vibrational motion(s) underlying the IR bands.

Search for Hydrogenated C$_{60}$ (fulleranes) in Circumstellar Envelopes

The recent detection of fullerene (C$_{60}$) in space and the positive assignment of five diffuse interstellar bands to C$_{60}^+$ reinforce the notion that fullerene-related compounds can be efficiently formed in circumstellar envelopes and be present in significant quantities in the interstellar medium. Experimental studies have shown that C$_{60}$ can be readily hydrogenated, raising the possibility that hydrogenated fullerenes (or fulleranes, C$_{60}$H$_m$, $m=1-60$) may be abundant in space. In this paper, we present theoretical studies of the vibrational modes of isomers of C$_{60}$H$_m$. Our results show that the four mid-infrared bands from the C$_{60}$ skeletal vibrations remain prominent in slightly hydrogenated C$_{60}$, but their strengths diminish in different degrees with increasing hydrogenation. It is therefore possible that the observed infrared bands assigned to C$_{60}$ could be due to a mixture of fullerenes and fulleranes. This provides a potential explanation for the observed scatter of the C$_{60}$ band ratios. Our calculations suggest that a feature around 15$μ$m due to the breathing mode of heavily hydrogenated C$_{60}$ may be detectable astronomically. A preliminary search for this feature in 35 C$_{60}$ sources is reported.

On the origin of the 11.3 micron unidentified infrared emission feature

The 11.3 $μ$m emission feature is a prominent member of the family of unidentified infrared emission (UIE) bands and is frequently attributed to out-of-plane bending modes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. We have performed quantum mechanical calculations of 60 neutral PAH molecules and found that it is difficult to reconcile the observed astronomical feature with any or a mix of these PAH molecules. We have further analyzed the fitting of spectra of several astronomical objects by the NASA PAH database program and found that reasonable fittings to the observed spectra are only possible by including significant contributions from oxygen and/or magnesium containing molecules in the mix. A mixed of pure PAH molecules, even including units of different sizes, geometry and charged states, is unable to fit the astronomical spectra. Preliminary theoretical results on the vibrational spectra of simple molecules with mixed aromatic/aliphatic structures show that these structures have consistent bundles of vibrational modes and could be viable carriers of the UIE bands.

A Theoretical Study on the Vibrational Spectra of PAH Molecules with Aliphatic Sidegroups

The role of aliphatic side groups on the formation of astronomical unidentified infrared emission (UIE) features is investigated by applying the density functional theory (DFT) to a series of molecules with mixed aliphatic-aromatic structures. The effects of introducing various aliphatic groups to a fixed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) core (ovalene) are studied. Simulated spectra for each molecule are produced by applying a Drude profile at $T$=500 K while the molecule is kept at its electronic ground state. The vibrational normal modes are classified using a semi-quantitative method. This allows us to separate the aromatic and aliphatic vibrations and therefore provide clues to what types of vibrations are responsible for the emissions bands at different wavelengths. We find that many of the UIE bands are not pure aromatic vibrational bands but may represent coupled vibrational modes. The effects of aliphatic groups on the formation of the 8 $μ$m plateau are qua ntitatively determined. The vibrational motions of methyl ($-$CH$_3$) and methyl ene ($-$CH$_2-$) groups can cause the merging of the vibrational bands of the pa rent PAH and the forming of broad features. These results suggest that aliphatic structures can play an important role in th e UIE phenomenon.
