Polarization of prompt J/psi in proton-proton collisions at RHIC

Within the framework of the nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) factorization approach, we compute the polarization of prompt J/psi produced at the Brookhaven's Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider from proton-proton collisions at the center-of-momentum energy sqrt{s}=200 GeV. The perturbative contributions are computed at leading order in the strong coupling constant. The prediction reveals that the color-singlet contribution severely underestimates the PHENIX preliminary data for the differential cross section integrated over the rapidity range |y|<0.35 and its contribution is strongly transversely polarized, which disagrees with the PHENIX preliminary data. After including the color-octet contributions, we find that the NRQCD predictions for both the cross section and polarization over the transverse-momentum range 1.5 GeV < p_T < 5 GeV (1.5 GeV < p_T < 2 GeV) integrated over the rapidity range |y|<0.35 (1.2 < |y| < 2.2) agree with the data within errors.

A QCD chiral critical point at small chemical potential: is it there or not?

For a QCD chiral critical point to exist, the parameter region of small quark masses for which the finite temperature transition is first-order must expand when the chemical potential is turned on. This can be tested by a Taylor expansion of the critical surface (m_{u,d},m_s)_c(mu). We present a new method to perform this Taylor expansion numerically, which we first test on an effective model of QCD with static, dense quarks. We then present the results for QCD with 3 degenerate flavors. For a lattice with N_t=4 time-slices, the first-order region shrinks as the chemical potential is turned on. This implies that, for physical quark masses, the analytic crossover which occurs at mu=0 between the hadronic and the plasma regimes remains crossover in the mu-region where a Taylor expansion is reliable, i.e. mu less than or similar to T. We present preliminary results from finer lattices indicating that this situation persists, as does the discrepancy between the curvature of T_c(m_c(mu=0),mu) and the experimentally observed freeze-out curve.

Spectral functions at small energies and the electrical conductivity in hot, quenched lattice QCD

In lattice QCD, the Maximum Entropy Method can be used to reconstruct spectral functions from euclidean correlators obtained in numerical simulations. We show that at finite temperature the most commonly used algorithm, employing Bryan's method, is inherently unstable at small energies and give a modification that avoids this. We demonstrate this approach using the vector current-current correlator obtained in quenched QCD at finite temperature. Our first results indicate a small electrical conductivity above the deconfinement transition.

Single-Spin Asymmetries in Inclusive and Exclusive Hadronic Processes

We investigate the single-spin asymmetries in inclusive and exclusive processes of electron-proton scattering and electron-positron annihilation. In the decomposition of hadronic tensor, a Lorentz symmetric spin-dependent term is generally present. The existence of such a term implies single-spin asymmetries in these processes and these single-spin asymmetries for baryons can be understood in a unified manner. We argue that it is important to measure the single-spin asymmetries in both inclusive and exclusive processes for the $Λ$ production at the present B-factories. This will lead to the first measurement of the structure function of the symmetric spin-dependent hadronic tensor in these processes.

Spectral functions at non-zero momentum in hot QCD

We present results for meson spectral functions at non-zero momentum at temperatures both below and above Tc, obtained in quenched simulations for a number of valence quark masses. For the lightest quark masses, a clear difference between the spectral functions on cold and hot lattices is observed.

Quark Matter in QC(2)D

Results are presented from a numerical study of lattice QCD with gauge group SU(2) and two flavors of Wilson fermion at non-zero quark chemical potential mu >> T. Studies of the equation of state, the superfluid condensate, and the Polyakov line all suggest that in addition to the low density phase of Bose-condensed diquark baryons, there is a deconfined phase at higher quark density in which quarks form a degenerate system, whose Fermi surface is only mildly disrupted by Cooper pair condensation.

The spectrum of lattice QCD with staggered fermions at strong coupling

Using 4 flavors of staggered fermions at infinite gauge coupling, we compare various analytic results for the hadron spectrum with exact Monte Carlo simulations. Agreement with Ref. \cite{Martin_etal} is very good, at the level of a few percent. Our results give credence to a discrepancy between the baryon mass and the critical chemical potential, for which baryons fill the lattice at zero temperature and infinite gauge coupling. Independent determinations of the latter set it at about 30% less than the baryon mass. One possible explanation is that the nuclear attraction becomes strong at infinite gauge coupling.

Meson spectral functions at nonzero momentum in hot QCD

We present preliminary results for meson spectral functions at nonzero momentum, obtained from quenched lattice QCD simulations at finite temperature using the Maximal Entropy Method. Twisted boundary conditions are used to have access to many momenta p~T. For light quarks, we observe a drastic modification when heating the system from below to above Tc. In particular, for the vector spectral density we find a nonzero spectral weight at all energies.

Deconfinement in dense 2-color QCD

We study SU(2) lattice gauge theory with two flavors of Wilson fermion at non-zero chemical potential mu and low temperature on a 8^3x16 system. We identify three regimes along the mu-axis. For mu<~m_pi/2 the system remains in the vacuum phase, and all physical observables considered remain essentially unchanged. The intermediate regime is characterised by a non-zero diquark condensate and an associated increase in the baryon density, consistent with what is expected for Bose-Einstein condensation of tightly bound diquarks. We also observe screening of the static quark potential here. In the high-density deconfined regime we find a non-zero Polyakov loop and a strong modification of the gluon propagator, including significant screening in the magnetic sector in the static limit, which must have a non-perturbative origin. The behaviour of thermodynamic observables and the superfluid order parameter are consistent with a Fermi surface disrupted by a BCS diquark condensate. The energy per baryon as a function of mu exhibits a minimum in the deconfined regime, implying that macroscopic objects such as stars formed in this theory are largely composed of quark matter.

The onset and deconfinement transitions in two-colour QCD

We study two-colour QCD with two flavours of Wilson fermion at non-zero chemical potential mu and zero temperature. We find evidence of two separate transitions: an onset transition at mu ~ m_pi/2 where quark number and energy densities increase from zero; and a deconfinement transition at higher mu. The mu-dependence of the number and energy densities and the diquark condensate indicate that a Fermi surface is formed and that BCS rather than Bose-Einstein condensation dominates at the quark mass considered here, especially beyond the deconfinement transition.

The 3-state Potts model as a heavy quark finite density laboratory

The 3-D Z(3) Potts model is a model for finite temperature QCD with heavy quarks. The chemical potential in QCD becomes an external magnetic field in the Potts model. Following Alford et al.\cite{Alford_et_al}, we revisit this mapping, and determine the phase diagram for an arbitrary chemical potential, real or imaginary. Analytic continuation of the phase transition line between real and imaginary chemical potential can be tested with precision. Our results show that the chemical potential weakens the heavy-quark deconfinement transition in QCD.

On meson spectral functions at high temperature and nonzero momentum

In the high-temperature phase of QCD meson spectral functions at nonzero momentum are expected to have a nontrivial and interesting structure. In order to provide a reference point for lattice studies employing e.g. the Maximal Entropy Method, we discuss several characteristics of meson spectral functions in the infinite-temperature limit. We report on ongoing work in quenched QCD with staggered fermions.

Two Color QCD beyond the BEC regime

We present results of simulations of Two Color QCD using two flavors of Wilson quark in the fundamental representation, at non-zero quark chemical potential mu, on an 8^3x16 lattice. Results for the quark number density, quark and gluon energy densities, and superfluid condensate are qualitatively distinct from the behaviour expected on the assumption that the dominant degrees of freedom are tightly bound scalar diquarks which Bose condense; rather the scaling with mu is more suggestive of a Fermi surface disrupted by a Cooper pair condensate. We also present evidence both for screening of the static potential, and color deconfinement, arising solely as a result of a non-zero quark density.

Minimalist's Linux Cluster

Using barebone PC components and NIC's, we construct a linux cluster which has 2-dimensional mesh structure. This cluster has smaller footprint, is less expensive, and use less power compared to conventional linux cluster. Here, we report our experience in building such a machine and discuss our current lattice project on the machine.

Zero temperature phase structure of multi-flavor QCD

To study continuum limit of lattice QCD with many light quark flavors, we investigate the zero temperature phase structures of multi-flavor QCD. Currently a series of exploratory simulations are being performed with the number of quark flavors, $N_f $= 6, 8, and 10 on a set of lattice volumes for various quark masses. Here, we report on the current status of our simulation on a $8^4$ lattice.

Light Hadron Spectrum in Quenched Lattice QCD with Staggered Quarks

Without chiral extrapolation, we achieved a realistic nucleon to (ρ)-meson mass ratio of (m_N/m_ρ= 1.23 \pm 0.04 ({\rm statistical}) \pm 0.02 ({\rm systematic})) in our quenched lattice QCD numerical calculation with staggered quarks. The systematic error is mostly from finite-volume effect and the finite-spacing effect is negligible. The flavor symmetry breaking in the pion and (ρ) meson is no longer visible. The lattice cutoff is set at 3.63 (\pm) 0.06 GeV, the spatial lattice volume is (2.59 (\pm) 0.05 fm)(^3), and bare quarks mass as low as 4.5 MeV are used. Possible quenched chiral effects in hadron mass are discussed.

GNU/Linux is chosen as an operating system and message passing libraries such as PVM, LAM, and MPICH have been tested as a parallel programming environment. We discuss our lattice QCD project for a heavy quark system on this computer.

Chiral limit of light hadron mass in quenched staggered QCD

We discuss chiral limit of light hadron mass from our quenched staggered calculations with a high lattice cutoff of (a^{-1})(\sim)3.7 GeV at (β)=6.5 and a large lattice volume of (48^3\times 64). We added six heavier quark mass values of (m_qa)=0.0075, 0.015, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 to the previously existing 0.01, 0.005, 0.0025, and 0.00125. An interesting curvature is observed in the (m_π^2/m_q) to (m_q) plot near (m_qa)=0.01.
