Visualization of Branch Points in PT-Symmetric Waveguides

The visualization of an exceptional point in a PT symmetric directional coupler(DC) is demonstrated. In such a system the exceptional point can be probed by varying only a single parameter. Using the Rayleigh-Schroedinger perturbation theory we prove that the spectrum of a PT symmetric Hamiltonian is real as long as the radius of convergence has not been reached. We also show how one can use a PT symmetric DC to measure the radius of convergence for non PT symmetric structures. For such systems the physical meaning of the rather mathematical term: radius of convergence, is exemplified.

Controlling Fano Profiles via Conical Intersections

An ab initio analytical model for Fano resonances in two-channel systems is presented. We find that the lineshape parameter q factors into a background contribution q_b that depends only on the uncoupled channels and an interaction contribution q_i that is affected by the coupling between the channels, revealing how the overall lineshape parameter q may be controlled. In particular, we show how conical intersections of the background phase shifts have an important role in the interplay between q_b and q_i. Finally, control of Fano transmission profiles through q_b and q_i is demonstrated for quantum billiards.
