A Control Philosophy for Multiplexed Power Converters in Active Distribution Systems

Reconfigurable, multiplexed power electronic devices (M-PEDs) can provide more effective, flexible operation for applications in active distribution networks, enabling the mitigation of thermal constraints and voltage violations. To-date, operational approaches of these M-PEDs have not been described, a significant issue as a result of their relative complexity as compared to conventional PEDs. This work proposes a state machine-based control philosophy that can be used to manage the mutually exclusive selector- and current-control signals for M-PEDs. Two control approaches are described using this philosophy: an Off-Load approach, suitable for systems without time-critical network constraints; and a Hot-Swap approach, implemented when the impact of transients must be minimized. Simulations illustrate the evolution of the state machine for a back-to-back voltage source converter topology. It is concluded that the proposed state machine-based control philosophy enables M-PED operation whilst managing the additional complexity of this promising converter topology.

DC Link Capacitor Ripple Constraints Limit the Benefits of Utility-Owned Four-Wire Power Converters

Utilities are increasingly interested in power converters to increase the headroom of their assets by actively controlling power flows on their network. In this work we demonstrate that thermal limits of dc link capacitors can result in substantially diminished benefits of these converters under unbalanced operation, due to constraints on neutral current and double-line frequency power ripple. Considering nine voltage source converter topologies with varying ripple capabilities, the upper bound (in terms of additional headroom released) increases by more than 80% compared to a no-ripple case for the application of phase current unbalance mitigation.

Towards Agentic Defect Reasoning: A Graph-Assisted Retrieval Framework for Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) is highly sensitive to process parameters, which influence defect formation through complex thermal and fluid mechanisms. However, defect-related knowledge is dispersed across the literature, limiting systematic understanding. This study presents a graph-assisted retrieval framework for defect reasoning in LPBF, using Ti6Al4V as a case study. Scientific publications are transformed into a structured representation, and relationships between parameters, mechanisms, and defects are encoded into an evidence-linked knowledge graph. The framework integrates semantic and graph-based retrieval, supported by a lightweight agent-based reasoning layer to construct interpretable defect pathways. Evaluation shows high retrieval accuracy (0.9667) and recall (0.9667), demonstrating effective identification of relevant defect related evidence. The framework enables transparent reasoning chains linking process parameters to defects. This work provides a scalable approach for converting unstructured literature into a query able and interpretable knowledge resource for additive manufacturing.
