Confinement without symmetry breaking in chiral gauge theories

The infrared structure of gauge theories with chiral fermions remains largely unexplored. In this work we investigate the Bars-Yankielowicz class using the functional renormalisation group, building on recent developments in gauge-fermion systems that provide clear criteria for confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking. We show that two distinct phases arise: one exhibiting both confinement and symmetry breaking at small numbers of colours, and another characterised by confinement without symmetry breaking in the large-colour limit. The latter realises a novel regime, opening the possibility of exotic spectra and phenomena that can now be studied within a systematic framework.

Dynamical symmetry breaking in Georgi-Glashow chiral-gauge theories

We investigate dynamical symmetry breaking in a class of chiral gauge theories containing the Georgi-Glashow model. These theories feature a gauge sector and two fermion species that transform in the two-index antisymmetric and antifundamental representations with different multiplicities. Using the effective action formalism and the functional renormalization group, we derive the flow of four-fermion interactions that encode their resonant structure and information about bound-state formation. Generalizing the theories to multiple generations, we make contact with the loss of asymptotic freedom and dissect the boundary of a conjectured conformal window. Our results show that, while most of the theory space displays a dominant color-breaking condensate, there exists a strongly coupled regime where the lowest-laying mechanisms fail and more intricate dynamics are expected to arise. This analysis provides a first step toward the infrared behavior of chiral gauge theories with functional methods.

Probing Large $N_f$ Through Schemes

We investigate the reliability of the large $N_f$ expansion of four-dimensional gauge-fermion quantum field theories, focusing on the structure and scheme dependence of the beta function. While the existence of a nontrivial UV fixed point at leading order in $1/N_f$ suggests the possibility of asymptotic safety, the absence of higher-order terms precludes robust conclusions. We analyze the impact of renormalization scheme transformations and show that higher-order corrections inevitably introduce increasingly singular contributions. We prove that at most one renormalization scheme can preserve the dominance of the leading contribution, rendering the truncation trustworthy; in all other schemes, higher-order terms dominate and the expansion becomes unreliable. This result places strong constraints on the physical interpretation of UV fixed points in large $N_f$ theories and emphasizes the need for resummation or non-perturbative control to establish asymptotic safety.

Consistency Relation for Fixed Point Dynamics

We gain insight on the fixed point dynamics of $d$ dimensional quantum field theories by exploiting the critical behavior of the $d-ε$ sister theories. To this end we first derive a self-consistent relation between the $d-ε$ scaling exponents and the associated $d$ dimensional beta functions. We then demonstrate that to account for an interacting fixed point in the original theory the related $d-ε$ scaling exponent must be multi-valued in $ε$. We elucidate our findings by discussing several examples such as the QCD Banks-Zaks infrared fixed point, QCD at large number of flavors, as well as the O(N) model in four dimensions. For the latter, we show that although the $1/N$ corrections prevent the reconstruction of the renormalization group flow, this is possible when adding the $1/N^2$ contributions.

Is the muon a third family lepton?

We propose a new family structure for the Standard Model fermions, where the muon is assigned to the third family, taking the placeholder from the tau lepton. This reassignment, which is a mere choice of convention in the Standard Model, becomes physically meaningful in the presence of new physics assuming a direct link between quarks and leptons. In fact, when quark and leptons are coupled by new interactions, the choice of which lepton is assigned to a particular quark generation brings physical consequences, revealing potentially meaningful patterns in the masses and mixings, while pointing to precise and testable predictions for experiments.

Variant-driven multi-wave pattern of COVID-19 via a Machine Learning analysis of spike protein mutations

Applying a ML approach to the temporal variability of the Spike protein sequence enables us to identify, classify and track emerging virus variants. Our analysis is unbiased, in the sense that it does not require any prior knowledge of the variant characteristics, and our results are validated by other informed methods that define variants based on the complete genome. Furthermore, correlating persistent variants of our approach to epidemiological data, we discover that each new wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is driven and dominated by a new emerging variant. Our results are therefore indispensable for further studies on the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and the prediction of evolutionary patterns that determine current and future mutations of the Spike proteins, as well as their diversification and persistence during the viral spread. Moreover, our ML algorithm works as an efficient early warning system for the emergence of new persistent variants that may pose a threat of triggering a new wave of COVID-19. Capable of a timely identification of potential new epidemiological threats when the variant only represents 1% of the new sequences, our ML strategy is a crucial tool for decision makers to define short and long term strategies to curb future outbreaks. The same methodology can be applied to other viral diseases, influenza included, if sufficient sequencing data is available.

The field theoretical ABC of epidemic dynamics

Infectious diseases are a threat for human health with tremendous impact on our society at large. The recent COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2, is the latest example of a highly infectious disease ravaging the world, since late 2019. It is therefore imperative to develop efficient mathematical models, able to substantially curb the damages of a pandemic by unveiling disease spreading dynamics and symmetries. This will help inform (non)-pharmaceutical prevention strategies. For the reasons above we wrote this report that goes at the heart of mathematical modelling of infectious disease diffusion by simultaneously investigating the underlying microscopic dynamics in terms of percolation models, effective description via compartmental models and the employment of temporal symmetries naturally encoded in the mathematical language of critical phenomena. Our report reviews these approaches and determines their common denominators, relevant for theoretical epidemiology and its link to important concepts in theoretical physics. We show that the different frameworks exhibit common features such as criticality and self-similarity under time rescaling. These features are naturally encoded within the unifying field theoretical approach. The latter leads to an efficient description of the time evolution of the disease via a framework in which (near) time-dilation invariance is explicitly realised. As important test of the relevance of symmetries we show how to mathematically account for observed phenomena such as multi-wave dynamics. The models presented here are of immediate relevance for different realms of scientific enquiry from medical applications to the understanding of human behaviour. Our review offers novel perspectives on how to model, capture, organise and understand epidemiological data and disease dynamics for modelling real-world phenomena.

Epidemiological theory of virus variants

We propose a physical theory underlying the temporal evolution of competing virus variants that relies on the existence of (quasi) fixed points capturing the large time scale invariance of the dynamics. To motivate our result we first modify the time-honoured compartmental models of the SIR type to account for the existence of competing variants and then show how their evolution can be naturally re-phrased in terms of flow equations ending at quasi fixed points. As the natural next step we employ (near) scale invariance to organise the time evolution of the competing variants within the effective description of the epidemic Renormalization Group framework. We test the resulting theory against the time evolution of COVID-19 virus variants that validate the theory empirically.

The Techni-Pati-Salam Composite Higgs

Composite Higgs models can be extended to the Planck scale by means of the partially unified partial compositeness (PUPC) framework. We present in detail the Techni-Pati-Salam model, based on a renormalizable gauge theory $SU(8)_{PS}\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$. We demonstrate that masses and mixings for all generations of standard model fermions can be obtained via partial compositeness at low energy, with four-fermion operators mediated by either heavy gauge bosons or scalars. The strong dynamics is predicted to be that of a confining $Sp(4)_{\rm HC}$ gauge group, with hyper-fermions in the fundamental and two-index anti-symmetric representations, with fixed multiplicities. This motivates for Lattice studies of the Infra-Red near-conformal walking phase, with results that may validate or rule out the model. This is the first complete and realistic attempt at providing an Ultra-Violet completion for composite Higgs models with top partial compositeness. In the baryon-number conserving vacuum, the theory also predicts a Dark Matter candidate, with mass in the few TeV range, protected by semi-integer baryon number.

Towards a fundamental safe theory of composite Higgs and Dark Matter

We present a novel paradigm that allows to define a composite theory at the electroweak scale that is well defined all the way up to any energy by means of safety in the UV. The theory flows from a complete UV fixed point to an IR fixed point for the strong dynamics (which gives the desired walking) before generating a mass gap at the TeV scale. We discuss two models featuring a composite Higgs, Dark Matter and partial compositeness for all SM fermions. The UV theories can also be embedded in a Pati-Salam partial unification, thus removing the instability generated by the $\mbox{U}(1)$ running. Finally, we find a Dark Matter candidate still allowed at masses of $260$ GeV, or $1.5 \sim 2$ TeV, where the latter mass range will be covered by next generation direct detection experiments.

Large $N_f$ for multiple representations

We present an extension of the large $N_f$ formalism that allows to study cases with multiple fermion representations. The pole structure in the beta function is traced back to the intrinsic non-abelian nature of the gauge group, independently on the fermion representation. This result validates the conjectured existence of an interactive UV fixed point for non-abelian gauge theories with large fermion multiplicity. Finally, we apply our results to chiral gauge theories and to extended Grand Unified Theories.

Composite Higgs Meets Planck Scale: Partial Compositeness from Partial Unification

Providing an Ultra-Violet completion valid up to the Planck scale is of paramount importance to validate the composite Higgs paradigm, at par with supersymmetry. We propose the first complete and feasible framework, based on partial unification of a confining hypercolor gauge group, where couplings of the standard model fermions are mediated by both gauge and scalar bosons. We demonstrate our approach by providing an explicit model based on a Techni-Pati-Salam unification, $SU(8)_{\rm PS}\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$, able to generate masses for all fermion generations, including neutrinos, via partial compositeness. We predict an $Sp(4)$ hypercolor group, and lattice studies will be crucial to validate the model.

Tumbling to the Top

We propose a new mechanism to generate the couplings of the top quark to a composite Goldstone Higgs, which we dub {\it Global Extended Technicolor} (GETC). Top, techni-fermions and spin-1 mediators arise as bound states of a tumbling chiral gauge theory. We propose a simple model based on a tumbling $SU(4)$ dynamics, which predicts partial compositeness for the top and an $SU(3)$ model with 6 Dirac flavours for the low-energy composite Higgs. Neutron decay bounds require the new dynamics to confine above $10^{6÷7}$ TeV. A simple extension of the basic model allows to generate partial compositeness also for bottom and tau, and a walking dynamics from an intermediate $SU(3)$ theory with 10 flavours (6 light + 4 heavy), whose dynamics can be studied on the Lattice.
