Relations between integrated correlators in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Supersymmetric Yang--Mills Theory

Integrated correlation functions in $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang--Mills theory with gauge group $SU(N)$ can be expressed in terms of the localised $S^4$ partition function, $Z_N$, deformed by a mass $m$. Two such cases are $\mathcal{C}_N=(\text{Im} τ)^2 \partial_τ\partial_{\barτ} \partial_m^2\log Z_N\vert_{m=0}$ and $\mathcal{H}_N=\partial_m^4\log Z_N\vert_{m=0}$, which are modular invariant functions of the complex coupling $τ$. While $\mathcal{C}_N$ was recently written in terms of a two-dimensional lattice sum for any $N$ and $τ$, $\mathcal{H}_N$ has only been evaluated up to order $1/N^3$ in a large-$N$ expansion in terms of modular invariant functions with no known lattice sum realisation. Here we develop methods for evaluating $\mathcal{H}_N$ to any desired order in $1/N$ and finite $τ$. We use this new data to constrain higher loop corrections to the stress tensor correlator, and give evidence for several intriguing relations between $\mathcal{H}_N$ and $\mathcal{C}_N$ to all orders in $1/N$. We also give evidence that the coefficients of the $1/N$ expansion of $\mathcal{H}_N$ can be written as lattice sums to all orders. Lastly, these large $N$ and finite $τ$ results are used to accurately estimate the integrated correlators at finite $N$ and finite $τ$.

Bootstrapping 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories: the case of SQCD

We derive exact relations between certain integrals of the conserved flavor current four point function in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ conformal field theories (CFTs) and derivatives of the mass deformed sphere free energy, which can be computed exactly for gauge theories using supersymmetric localization. For conformal gauge theories with flavor groups of rank greater than one, there are at least two such integrated constraints, which can then be combined with the numerical conformal bootstrap to bound CFT data as a function of the complexified gauge coupling $τ$. We apply this strategy to the case of $SU(2)$ conformal SQCD with flavor group $SO(8)$, where we compute bounds on unprotected scaling dimensions as a function of $τ$ that match the free theory limit, and exhibit the expected mixing between the action of the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ duality group and $SO(8)$ triality.

Explicit holography for vector models at finite $N$, volume and temperature

In previous work we constructed an explicit mapping between large $N$ vector models (free or critical) in $d$ dimensions and a non-local high-spin gravity theory on $AdS_{d+1}$, such that the gravitational theory reproduces the field theory correlation functions order by order in $1/N$. In this paper we discuss three aspects of this mapping. First, our original mapping was not valid non-perturbatively in $1/N$, since it did not include non-local correlations between the gravity fields which appear at finite $N$. We show that by using a bi-local $G-Σ$ type formalism similar to the one used in the SYK model, we can construct an exact mapping to the bulk that is valid also at finite $N$. The theory in the bulk contains additional auxiliary fields which implement the finite $N$ constraints. Second, we discuss the generalization of our mapping to the field theory on $S^d$, and in particular how the sphere free energy matches exactly between the two sides, and how the mapping can be consistently regularized. Finally, we discuss the field theory at finite temperature, and show that the low-temperature phase of the vector models can be mapped to a high-spin gravity theory on thermal AdS space.

Upper critical dimension of the 3-state Potts model

We consider the 3-state Potts model in $d\geq2$ dimensions. For $d$ less than the upper critical dimension $d_\text{crit}$, the model has a critical and a tricritical fixed point. In $d=2$, these fixed points are described by minimal models, and so are exactly solvable. For $d>2$, however, strong coupling makes them difficult to study and there is no consensus on the value of $d_\text{crit}$. We use the numerical conformal bootstrap to compute critical exponents of both the critical and tricritical fixed points for general $d$. In $d=2$ our results match the expected values, and as we increase $d$ we find that the critical exponents of each fixed point get closer until they merge near $d_\text{crit}\lesssim 2.5$.

Evidence for 3d bosonization from monopole operators

We give evidence for 3d bosonization in Conformal Field Theories (CFTs) by computing monopole operator scaling dimensions in 2+1 dimensional quantum electrodynamics (QED3) with Chern-Simons level $k$ and $N$ complex bosons in a large $N,k$ expansion. We first consider the $k=0$ case, where we show that scaling dimensions previously computed to subleading order in $1/N$ can be extrapolated to $N=1$ and matched to $O(2)$ Wilson-Fisher CFT scaling dimensions with around 5\% error, which is evidence for particle-vortex duality. We then generalize the subleading calculation to large $N,k$ and fixed $k/N$, extrapolate to $N=k=1$, and consider monopole operators that are conjectured to be dual to non-degenerate scalar operators in a theory of a single Dirac fermion. We find matches typically with 1\% error or less, which is strong evidence of this so-called `seed' duality that implies a web of 3d bosonization dualities among CFTs.

M-theory on $AdS_4\times S^7$ at 1-loop and beyond

We study graviton scattering on $AdS_4\times S^7$, which is dual to the stress tensor multiplet four-point function in the maximally supersymmetric 3d $U(N)_1\times U(N)_{-1}$ ABJM theory. We compute 1-loop corrections to this holographic correlator coming from Witten diagrams with supergravity $R$ and higher derivative $R^4$ vertices, up to contact term ambiguities, and find that the flat space limit matches the corresponding terms in the 11d M-theory S-matrix. We then use supersymmetric localization to show that all the 1-loop contact terms vanish, as was previously observed for the $AdS_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_2$ theory dual to $U(N)_2\times U(N)_{-2}$ ABJM. Finally, we use the recent localization results of Gaiotto and Abajian, as inspired by twisted M-theory, to compute all the short OPE coefficients in correlators of the stress tensor multiplet and the next lowest half-BPS operator, which we find saturate the bootstrap bounds on these mixed correlators for all $N$.

Anomalous dimensions of monopole operators in scalar QED$_3$ with Chern-Simons term

We study monopole operators with the lowest possible topological charge $q=1/2$ at the infrared fixed point of scalar electrodynamics in $2+1$ dimension (scalar QED$_3$) with $N$ complex scalars and Chern-Simons coupling $|k|=N$. In the large $N$ expansion, monopole operators in this theory with spins $\ell<O(\sqrt{N})$ and associated flavor representations are expected to have the same scaling dimension to sub-leading order in $1/N$. We use the state-operator correspondence to calculate the scaling dimension to sub-leading order with the result $N-0.2789+O(1/N)$, which improves on existing leading order results. We also compute the $\ell^2/N$ term that breaks the degeneracy to sub-leading order for monopoles with spins $\ell=O(\sqrt{N})$.

Bootstrapping $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills on the conformal manifold

We combine supersymmetric localization results with numerical bootstrap techniques to compute upper bounds on the low-lying CFT data of ${\cal N} = 4$ super-Yang-Mills theory as a function of the complexified gauge coupling $τ$. In particular, from the stress tensor multiplet four-point function, we extract the scaling dimension of the lowest-lying unprotected scalar operator and its OPE coefficient. While our method can be applied in principle to any gauge group $G$, we focus on $G = SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ for simplicity. At weak coupling, the upper bounds we find are very close to the corresponding four-loop results. We also give preliminary evidence that these upper bounds become small islands under reasonable assumptions.

Pure anti-de Sitter supergravity and the conformal bootstrap

We consider graviton scattering in maximal supergravity on Anti-de Sitter space (AdS) in $d+1$ dimensions for $d=3,4,\text{and $6$}$ with no extra compact spacetime factor. Holography suggests that this theory is dual to an exotic maximally supersymmetric conformal field theory (CFT) in $d$ dimensions whose only light single trace operator is the stress tensor. This contrasts with more standard cases like Type IIB string theory on $AdS_5\times S^5$ dual to $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills, where the CFT has light single trace operators for each Kaluza-Klein mode on $S^5$. We compute the 1-loop correction to the pure AdS$_{d+1}$ theory in a small Planck length expansion, which is dual to the large central charge expansion in the CFT. We find that this correction saturates the most general non-perturbative conformal bootstrap bounds on this correlator in the large central charge regime for $d=3,4,6$, while the 1-loop correction to CFTs with string/M-theory duals all lie inside the allowed region.

A Derivation of AdS/CFT for Vector Models

We explicitly rewrite the path integral for the free or critical $O(N)$ (or $U(N)$) bosonic vector models in $d$ space-time dimensions as a path integral over fields (including massless high-spin fields) living on ($d+1$)-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. Inspired by de Mello Koch, Jevicki, Suzuki and Yoon and earlier work, we first rewrite the vector models in terms of bi-local fields, then expand these fields in eigenmodes of the conformal group, and finally map these eigenmodes to those of fields on anti-de Sitter space. Our results provide an explicit (non-local) action for a high-spin theory on anti-de Sitter space, which is presumably equivalent in the large $N$ limit to Vasiliev's classical high-spin gravity theory (with some specific gauge-fixing to a fixed background), but which can be used also for loop computations. Our mapping is explicit within the $1/N$ expansion, but in principle can be extended also to finite $N$ theories, where extra constraints on products of bulk fields need to be taken into account.

ABJM at Strong Coupling from M-theory, Localization, and Lorentzian Inversion

We study the stress tensor multiplet four-point function in the 3d maximally supersymmetric ABJ(M) theory with Chern-Simons level $k=2$, which in the large $N$ limit is holographically dual to weakly coupled M-theory on $AdS_4\times S^7/\mathbb{Z}_2$. We use the Lorentzian inversion to compute the 1-loop correction to this holographic correlator coming from Witten diagrams with supergravity $R$ and the first higher derivative correction $R^4$ vertices, up to a finite number of contact terms that contribute to low spins where the inversion formula does not converge. We find a precise match with the corresponding terms in the 11d M-theory S-matrix by taking the flat space limit, which is not sensitive to these contact terms. We then conjecturally fix these contact terms by analytically continuing the inversion formula below its expected range of convergence, and verify this conjecture using supersymmetric localization. Finally, we compare some of the 1-loop CFT data to non-perturbative in $N$ bounds from the numerical conformal bootstrap, which we compute at unprecedently high accuracy, and find that the 1-loop corrections saturate the bounds in the large $N$ regime, which extends the previously observed match at tree level.

Modular invariant holographic correlators for $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with general gauge group

We study the stress tensor four-point function for $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM with gauge group $G=SU(N)$, $SO(2N+1)$, $SO(2N)$ or $USp(2N)$ at large $N$. When $G=SU(N)$, the theory is dual to type IIB string theory on $AdS_5\times S^5$ with complexified string coupling $τ_s$, while for the other cases it is dual to the orbifold theory on $AdS_5\times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_2$. In all cases we use the analytic bootstrap and constraints from localization to compute 1-loop and higher derivative tree level corrections to the leading supergravity approximation of the correlator. We give perturbative evidence that the localization constraint in the large $N$ and finite complexified coupling $τ$ limit can be written for each $G$ in terms of Eisenstein series that are modular invariant in terms of $τ_s\proptoτ$, which allows us to fix protected terms in the correlator in that limit. In all cases, we find that the flat space limit of the correlator precisely matches the type IIB S-matrix. We also find a closed form expression for the $SU(N)$ 1-loop Mellin amplitude with supergravity vertices. Finally, we compare our analytic predictions at large $N$ and finite $τ$ to bounds from the numerical bootstrap in the large $N$ regime, and find that they are not saturated for any $G$ and any $τ$, which suggests that no physical theory saturates these bootstrap bounds.

Bootstrapping Heisenberg Magnets and their Cubic Instability

We study the critical $O(3)$ model using the numerical conformal bootstrap. In particular, we use a recently developed cutting-surface algorithm to efficiently map out the allowed space of CFT data from correlators involving the leading $O(3)$ singlet $s$, vector $ϕ$, and rank-2 symmetric tensor $t$. We determine their scaling dimensions to be $(Δ_{s}, Δ_ϕ, Δ_{t}) = (0.518942(51), 1.59489(59), 1.20954(23))$, and also bound various OPE coefficients. We additionally introduce a new "tip-finding" algorithm to compute an upper bound on the leading rank-4 symmetric tensor $t_4$, which we find to be relevant with $Δ_{t_4} < 2.99056$. The conformal bootstrap thus provides a numerical proof that systems described by the critical $O(3)$ model, such as classical Heisenberg ferromagnets at the Curie transition, are unstable to cubic anisotropy.

Genus-2 Holographic Correlator on $AdS_5 \times S^5$ from Localization

We consider the four-point function of the stress tensor multiplet superprimary in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills (SYM) with gauge group $SU(N)$ in the large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling $λ\equiv g_\text{YM}^2N$ limit, which is holographically dual to the genus expansion of IIB string theory on $AdS_5\times S^5$. In \cite{Binder:2019jwn} it was shown that the integral of this correlator is related to derivatives of the mass deformed $\mathcal{N}=2^*$ sphere free energy, which was computed using supersymmetric localization to leading order in $1/N^2$ for finite $λ$. We generalize this computation to any order in $1/N^2$ for finite $λ$ using topological recursion, and use this any order constraint to fix the $R^4$ correction to the holographic correlator to any order in the genus expansion. We also use it to complete the derivation of the 1-loop supergravity correction, and show that analyticity in spin fails at zero spin in the large $N$ expansion as predicted from the Lorentzian inversion formula. In the flat space limit, the $R^4$ term in the holographic correlator matches that of the IIB S-matrix in 10d, which is a precise check of AdS$_5$/CFT$_4$ for local operators at genus-one. Using the flat space limit and localization we then fix $D^4R^4$ in the holographic correlator to any order in the genus expansion, which is nontrivial at genus-two, i.e. $1/N^6$. This is the first result at two orders beyond the planar limit at strong coupling for a holographic correlator.

AdS from CFT for scalar QED

We construct an explicit bulk dual in anti-de Sitter space, with couplings of order $1/N$, for the $SU(N)$-singlet sector of QED in $d$ space-time dimensions ($2 < d < 4$) coupled to $N$ scalar fields. We begin from the bulk dual for the theory of $N$ complex free scalar fields that we constructed in our previous work, and couple this to $U(1)$ gauge fields living on the boundary in order to get the bulk dual of scalar QED (in which the $U(1)$ gauge fields become the boundary value of the bulk vector fields). As in our previous work, the bulk dual is non-local but we can write down an explicit action for it. We focus on the CFTs arising at low energies (or, equivalently, when the $U(1)$ gauge coupling goes to infinity). For $d=3$ we discuss also the addition of a Chern-Simons term for $U(1)$, modifying the boundary conditions for the bulk gauge field. We also discuss the generalization to QCD, with $U(N_c)$ gauge fields coupled to $N$ scalar fields in the fundamental representation (in the large $N$ limit with fixed $N_c$).

6d (2,0) and M-theory at 1-loop

We study the stress tensor multiplet four-point function in the 6d maximally supersymmetric $(2,0)$ $A_{N-1}$ and $D_N$ theories, which have no Lagrangian description, but in the large $N$ limit are holographically dual to weakly coupled M-theory on $AdS_7\times S^4$ and $AdS_7\times S^4/\mathbb{Z}_2$, respectively. We use the analytic bootstrap to compute the 1-loop correction to this holographic correlator coming from Witten diagrams with supergravity $R$ and the first higher derivative correction $R^4$ vertices, which is the first 1-loop correction computed for a non-Lagrangian theory. We then take the flat space limit and find precise agreement with the corresponding terms in the 11d M-theory S-matrix, some of which we compute for the first time using two-particle unitarity cuts.

Weizmann Lectures on the Numerical Conformal Bootstrap

These lectures were given at the Weizmann Institute in the spring of 2019. They are intended to familiarize students with the nuts and bolts of the numerical bootstrap as efficiently as possible. After a brief review of the basics of conformal field theory in $d>2$ spacetime dimensions, we discuss how to compute conformal blocks, formulate the crossing equations as a semi-definite programming problem, solve this problem using SDPB on a personal computer, and interpret the results. We include worked examples for all steps, including bounds for 3d CFTs with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ or $O(N)$ global symmetries. Each lecture includes a problem set, which culminate in a precise computation of the 3d Ising model critical exponents using the mixed correlator $\mathbb{Z}_2$ bootstrap. A Mathematica file is included that transforms crossing equations into the proper input form for SDPB.

New Modular Invariants in $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills Theory

We study modular invariants arising in the four-point functions of the stress tensor multiplet operators of the ${\cal N} = 4$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory, in the limit where $N$ is taken to be large while the complexified Yang-Mills coupling $τ$ is held fixed. The specific four-point functions we consider are integrated correlators obtained by taking various combinations of four derivatives of the squashed sphere partition function of the ${\cal N} = 2^*$ theory with respect to the squashing parameter $b$ and mass parameter $m$, evaluated at the values $b=1$ and $m=0$ that correspond to the ${\cal N} = 4$ theory on a round sphere. At each order in the $1/N$ expansion, these fourth derivatives are modular invariant functions of $(τ, \bar τ)$. We present evidence that at half-integer orders in $1/N$, these modular invariants are linear combinations of non-holomorphic Eisenstein series, while at integer orders in $1/N$, they are certain "generalized Eisenstein series" which satisfy inhomogeneous Laplace eigenvalue equations on the hyperbolic plane. These results reproduce known features of the low-energy expansion of the four-graviton amplitude in type IIB superstring theory in ten-dimensional flat space and have interesting implications for the structure of the analogous expansion in $AdS_5\times S^5$.
