BPS jumping loci are automorphic

We show that BPS jumping loci -- loci in the moduli space of string compactifications where the number of BPS states jumps in an upper semi-continuous manner -- naturally appear as Fourier coefficients of (vector space-valued) automorphic forms. For the case of $T^2$ compactification, the jumping loci are governed by a modular form studied by Hirzebruch and Zagier, while the jumping loci in K3 compactification appear in a story developed by Oda and Kudla-Millson in arithmetic geometry. We also comment on some curious related automorphy in the physics of black hole attractors and flux vacua.

Heterotic sigma models on $T^8$ and the Borcherds automorphic form $Φ_{12}$

We consider the spectrum of BPS states of the heterotic sigma model with $(0,8)$ supersymmetry and $T^8$ target, as well as its second-quantized counterpart. We show that the counting function for such states is intimately related to Borcherds' automorphic form $Φ_{12}$, a modular form which exhibits automorphy for $O(2,26;{\mathbb Z})$. We comment on possible implications for Umbral moonshine and theories of AdS$_3$ gravity.

BPS jumping loci and special cycles

We study BPS jumping loci, or the subloci in moduli spaces of supersymmetric string vacua where BPS states come into existence discontinuously. This phenomenon is distinct from wall-crossing. We argue that these loci should be thought of as special cycles in the sense of Noether-Lefschetz loci or special Shimura subvarieties, which are indeed examples of BPS jumping loci for certain string compactifications. We use the Hodge-elliptic genus as an informative tool, suggesting that our work can be extended to understand the jumping behavior of motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants.

Black Holes and Hurwitz Class Numbers

We define a natural counting function for BPS black holes in $K3 \times T^2$ compactification of type II string theory, and observe that it is given by a weight 3/2 mock modular form discovered by Zagier. This hints at tantalizing relations connecting black holes, string theory, and number theory.

Counting spinning dyons in maximal supergravity: The Hodge-elliptic genus for tori

We consider $M$-theory compactified on $T^4 \times T^2$ and describe the count of spinning $1/8$-BPS states. This refines the classic count of Maldacena-Moore-Strominger in the physics literature and the recent mathematical work of Bryan-Oberdieck-Pandharipande-Yin, which studied reduced Donaldson-Thomas invariants of abelian surfaces and threefolds. As in previous work on $K3 \times T^2$ compactification, we track angular momenta under both the $SU(2)_L$ and $SU(2)_R$ factors in the 5d little group, providing predictions for the relevant motivic curve counts.

The hidden symmetry of the heterotic string

We propose that Borcherds' Fake Monster Lie algebra is a broken symmetry of heterotic string theory compactified on $T^7 \times T^2$. As evidence, we study the fully flavored counting function for BPS instantons contributing to a certain loop amplitude. The result is controlled by $Φ_{12}$, an automorphic form for $O(2, 26, \mathbb{Z})$. The degeneracies it encodes in its Fourier coefficients are graded dimensions of a second-quantized Fock space for this large symmetry algebra. This construction provides a concrete realization of Harvey and Moore's proposed relationship between Generalized Kac-Moody symmetries and supersymmetric string vacua.

Nonsupersymmetric dualities from mirror symmetry

We study supersymmetry breaking perturbations of the simplest dual pair of 2+1-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric field theories -- the free chiral multiplet and N = 2 super-QED with a single flavor. We find dual descriptions of a phase diagram containing four distinct massive phases. The equivalence of the intervening critical theories gives rise to several non-supersymmetric avatars of mirror symmetry: we find dualities relating scalar QED to a free fermion and Wilson-Fisher theories to both scalar and fermionic QED. Thus, mirror symmetry can be viewed as the multicritical parent duality from which these non-supersymmetric dualities directly descend.

The Hodge-elliptic genus, spinning BPS states, and black holes

We perform a refined count of BPS states in the compactification of M-theory on $K3 \times T^2$, keeping track of the information provided by both the $SU(2)_L$ and $SU(2)_R$ angular momenta in the $SO(4)$ little group. Mathematically, this four variable counting function may be expressed via the motivic Donaldson-Thomas counts of $K3 \times T^2$, simultaneously refining Katz, Klemm, and Pandharipande's motivic Donaldson-Thomas counts on $K3$ and Oberdieck-Pandharipande's Gromov-Witten counts on $K3 \times T^2$. This provides the first full answer for motivic curve counts of a compact Calabi-Yau threefold. Along the way, we develop a Hodge-elliptic genus for Calabi-Yau manifolds -- a new counting function for BPS states that interpolates between the Hodge polynomial and the elliptic genus of a Calabi-Yau.

Bosonization and Mirror Symmetry

We study bosonization in 2+1 dimensions using mirror symmetry, a duality that relates pairs of supersymmetric theories. Upon breaking supersymmetry in a controlled way, we dynamically obtain the bosonization duality that equates the theory of a free Dirac fermion to QED3 with a single scalar boson. This duality may be used to demonstrate the bosonization duality relating an $O(2)$-symmetric Wilson-Fisher fixed point to QED3 with a single Dirac fermion, Peskin-Dasgupta-Halperin duality, and the recently conjectured duality relating the theory of a free Dirac fermion to fermionic QED3 with a single flavor. Chern-Simons and BF couplings for both dynamical and background gauge fields play a central role in our approach. In the course of our study, we describe a chiral mirror pair that may be viewed as the minimal supersymmetric generalization of the two bosonization dualities.

Universal Bounds on Charged States in 2d CFT and 3d Gravity

We derive an explicit bound on the dimension of the lightest charged state in two dimensional conformal field theories with a global abelian symmetry. We find that the bound scales with $c$ and provide examples that parametrically saturate this bound. We also prove than any such theory must contain a state with charge-to-mass ratio above a minimal lower bound. We comment on the implications for charged states in three dimensional theories of gravity.

3D String Theory and Umbral Moonshine

The simplest string theory compactifications to 3D with 16 supercharges -- the heterotic string on $T^7$, and type II strings on $K3 \times T^3$ -- are related by U-duality, and share a moduli space of vacua parametrized by $O(8,24; \mathbb{Z}) \backslash O(8,24) / (O(8) \times O(24))$. One can think of this as the moduli space of even, self-dual 32-dimensional lattices with signature (8,24). At 24 special points in moduli space, the lattice splits as $Γ^{8,0} \oplus Γ^{0,24}$. $Γ^{0,24}$ can be the Leech lattice or any of 23 Niemeier lattices, while $Γ^{8,0}$ is the $E_8$ root lattice. We show that starting from this observation, one can find a precise connection between the Umbral groups and type IIA string theory on $K3$. This provides a natural physical starting point for understanding Mathieu and Umbral moonshine. The maximal unbroken subgroups of Umbral groups in 6D (or any other limit) are those obtained by starting at the associated Niemeier point and moving in moduli space while preserving the largest possible subgroup of the Umbral group. To illustrate the action of these symmetries on BPS states, we discuss the computation of certain protected four-derivative terms in the effective field theory, and recover facts about the spectrum and symmetry representations of 1/2-BPS states.

Emergent space-time and the supersymmetric index

It is of interest to find criteria on a 2d CFT which indicate that it gives rise to emergent gravity in a macroscopic 3d AdS space via holography. Symmetric orbifolds in the large $N$ limit have partition functions which are consistent with an emergent space-time string theory with $L_{\rm string} \sim L_{\rm AdS}$. For supersymmetric CFTs, the elliptic genus can serve as a sensitive probe of whether the SCFT admits a large radius gravity description with $L_{\rm string} \ll L_{\rm AdS}$ after one deforms away from the symmetric orbifold point in moduli space. We discuss several classes of constructions whose elliptic genera strongly hint that gravity with $L_{\rm Planck} \ll L_{\rm string} \ll L_{\rm AdS}$ can emerge at suitable points in moduli space.

Elementary introduction to Moonshine

These notes provide an elementary (and incomplete) sketch of the objects and ideas involved in monstrous and umbral moonshine. They were the basis for a plenary lecture at the 18th International Congress on Mathematical Physics, and for a lecture series at the Centre International de Recontres Mathematiques school on "Mathematics of String Theory."

Mirror symmetry and the half-filled Landau level

We study the dynamics of the half-filled zeroth Landau level of Dirac fermions using mirror symmetry, a supersymmetric duality between certain pairs of $2+1$-dimensional theories. We show that the half-filled zeroth Landau level of a pair of Dirac fermions is dual to a pair of Fermi surfaces of electrically-neutral composite fermions, coupled to an emergent gauge field. Thus, we use supersymmetry to provide a derivation of flux attachment and the emergent Fermi liquid-like state for the lowest Landau level of Dirac fermions. We find that in the dual theory the Coulomb interaction induces a dynamical exponent $z=2$ for the emergent gauge field, making the interactions classically marginal. This enables us to map the problem of $2+1$-dimensional Dirac fermions in a finite transverse magnetic field, interacting via a strong Coulomb interaction, into a perturbatively controlled model. We analyze the resulting low-energy theory using the renormalization group and determine the nature of the BCS interaction in the emergent composite Fermi liquid.

Mock Modular Mathieu Moonshine Modules

We construct super vertex operator algebras which lead to modules for moonshine relations connecting the four smaller sporadic simple Mathieu groups with distinguished mock modular forms. Starting with an orbifold of a free fermion theory, any subgroup of Co_0 that fixes a 3-dimensional subspace of its unique non-trivial 24-dimensional representation commutes with a certain N=4 superconformal algebra. Similarly, any subgroup of Co_0 that fixes a 2-dimensional subspace of the 24-dimensional representation commutes with a certain N=2 superconformal algebra. Through the decomposition of the corresponding twined partition functions into characters of the N=4 (resp. N=2) superconformal algebra, we arrive at mock modular forms which coincide with the graded characters of an infinite-dimensional Z-graded module for the corresponding group. The Mathieu groups are singled out amongst various other possibilities by the moonshine property: requiring the corresponding weak Jacobi forms to have certain asymptotic behaviour near cusps. Our constructions constitute the first examples of explicitly realized modules underlying moonshine phenomena relating mock modular forms to sporadic simple groups. Modules for other groups, including the sporadic groups of McLaughlin and Higman--Sims, are also discussed.

Equivariant K3 Invariants

In this note, we describe a connection between the enumerative geometry of curves in K3 surfaces and the chiral ring of an auxiliary superconformal field theory. We consider the invariants calculated by Yau--Zaslow (capturing the Euler characters of the moduli spaces of D2-branes on curves of given genus), together with their refinements to carry additional quantum numbers by Katz--Klemm--Vafa (KKV), and Katz--Klemm--Pandharipande (KKP). We show that these invariants can be reproduced by studying the Ramond ground states of an auxiliary chiral superconformal field theory which has recently been observed to give rise to mock modular moonshine for a variety of sporadic simple groups that are subgroups of Conway's group. We also study equivariant versions of these invariants. A K3 sigma model is specified by a choice of 4-plane in the K3 D-brane charge lattice. Symmetries of K3 sigma models are naturally identified with 4-plane preserving subgroups of the Conway group, according to the work of Gaberdiel--Hohenegger--Volpato, and one may consider corresponding equivariant refined K3 Gopakumar--Vafa invariants. The same symmetries naturally arise in the auxiliary CFT state space, affording a suggestive alternative view of the same computation. We comment on a lift of this story to the generating function of elliptic genera of symmetric products of K3 surfaces.

An Extremal N=2 Superconformal Field Theory

We provide an example of an extremal chiral ${\cal N}=2$ superconformal field theory at $c=24$. The construction is based on a ${\mathbb Z}_2$ orbifold of the theory associated to the $A_{1}^{24}$ Niemeier lattice. The statespace is governed by representations of the sporadic group $M_{23}$.

On the elliptic genera of manifolds of Spin(7) holonomy

Superstring compactification on a manifold of Spin(7) holonomy gives rise to a 2d worldsheet conformal field theory with an extended supersymmetry algebra. The $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal algebra is extended by additional generators of spins 2 and 5/2, and instead of just superconformal symmetry one has a $c=12$ realization of the symmetry group $\mathcal{SW}(3/2,2)$. In this paper, we compute the characters of this supergroup, and decompose the elliptic genus of a general Spin(7) compactification in terms of these characters. We find suggestive relations to various sporadic groups, which are made more precise in a companion paper.
