Samplable Anonymous Aggregation for Private Federated Data Analysis

We revisit the problem of designing scalable protocols for private statistics and private federated learning when each device holds its private data. Locally differentially private algorithms require little trust but are (provably) limited in their utility. Centrally differentially private algorithms can allow significantly better utility but require a trusted curator. This gap has led to significant interest in the design and implementation of simple cryptographic primitives, that can allow central-like utility guarantees without having to trust a central server. Our first contribution is to propose a new primitive that allows for efficient implementation of several commonly used algorithms, and allows for privacy accounting that is close to that in the central setting without requiring the strong trust assumptions it entails. {\em Shuffling} and {\em aggregation} primitives that have been proposed in earlier works enable this for some algorithms, but have significant limitations as primitives. We propose a {\em Samplable Anonymous Aggregation} primitive, which computes an aggregate over a random subset of the inputs and show that it leads to better privacy-utility trade-offs for various fundamental tasks. Secondly, we propose a system architecture that implements this primitive and perform a security analysis of the proposed system. Our design combines additive secret-sharing with anonymization and authentication infrastructures.

CodeGeeX: A Pre-Trained Model for Code Generation with Multilingual Benchmarking on HumanEval-X

Large pre-trained code generation models, such as OpenAI Codex, can generate syntax- and function-correct code, making the coding of programmers more productive and our pursuit of artificial general intelligence closer. In this paper, we introduce CodeGeeX, a multilingual model with 13 billion parameters for code generation. CodeGeeX is pre-trained on 850 billion tokens of 23 programming languages as of June 2022. Our extensive experiments suggest that CodeGeeX outperforms multilingual code models of similar scale for both the tasks of code generation and translation on HumanEval-X. Building upon HumanEval (Python only), we develop the HumanEval-X benchmark for evaluating multilingual models by hand-writing the solutions in C++, Java, JavaScript, and Go. In addition, we build CodeGeeX-based extensions on Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, and Cloud Studio, generating 4.7 billion tokens for tens of thousands of active users per week. Our user study demonstrates that CodeGeeX can help to increase coding efficiency for 83.4% of its users. Finally, CodeGeeX is publicly accessible and in Sep. 2022, we open-sourced its code, model weights (the version of 850B tokens), API, extensions, and HumanEval-X at https://github.com/THUDM/CodeGeeX.

Identification of coupled Landau and anomalous resonances in space plasmas

Wave-particle resonance, a ubiquitous process in the plasma universe, occurs when resonant particles observe a constant wave phase to enable sustained energy transfer. Here, we present spacecraft observations of simultaneous Landau and anomalous resonances between oblique whistler waves and the same group of protons, which are evidenced, respectively, by phase-space rings in parallel-velocity spectra and phase-bunched distributions in gyro-phase spectra. Our results indicate the coupling between Landau and anomalous resonances via the overlapping of the resonance islands.

Optimal control of quantum system in fermion fields: Pontryagin-type maximum principle(I)

In this paper, the Pontryagin-type maximum principle for optimal control of quantum stochastic systems in fermion fields is obtained. These systems have gained significant prominence in numerous quantum applications ranging from physical chemistry to multi-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. Furthermore, we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions to backward quantum stochastic differential equations driven by fermion Brownian motion. The application of noncommutative martingale inequalities and the martingale representation theorem enables this achievement.

Direct observations of cross-scale energy transfer in space plasmas

The collisionless plasmas in space and astrophysical environments are intrinsically multiscale in nature, behaving as conducting fluids at macroscales and kinetically at microscales comparable to ion- and/or electron-gyroradii. A fundamental question in understanding the plasma dynamics is how energy is transported and dissipated across different scales. Here, we present spacecraft measurements in the solar wind upstream of the terrestrial bow shock, in which the macroscale ultra-low-frequency waves and microscale whistler waves simultaneously resonate with the ions. The ion acceleration from ultra-low-frequency waves leads to velocity distributions unstable to the growth of whistler waves, which in turn resonate with the electrons to complete cross-scale energy transfer. These observations, consistent with numerical simulations in the occurrence of phase-bunched ion and electron distributions, also highlight the importance of anomalous resonance, a nonlinear modification of the classical cyclotron resonance, in the cross-scale wave coupling and energy transfer processes.

Increasing SLAM Pose Accuracy by Ground-to-Satellite Image Registration

Vision-based localization for autonomous driving has been of great interest among researchers. When a pre-built 3D map is not available, the techniques of visual simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) are typically adopted. Due to error accumulation, visual SLAM (vSLAM) usually suffers from long-term drift. This paper proposes a framework to increase the localization accuracy by fusing the vSLAM with a deep-learning-based ground-to-satellite (G2S) image registration method. In this framework, a coarse (spatial correlation bound check) to fine (visual odometry consistency check) method is designed to select the valid G2S prediction. The selected prediction is then fused with the SLAM measurement by solving a scaled pose graph problem. To further increase the localization accuracy, we provide an iterative trajectory fusion pipeline. The proposed framework is evaluated on two well-known autonomous driving datasets, and the results demonstrate the accuracy and robustness in terms of vehicle localization.

Homography Guided Temporal Fusion for Road Line and Marking Segmentation

Reliable segmentation of road lines and markings is critical to autonomous driving. Our work is motivated by the observations that road lines and markings are (1) frequently occluded in the presence of moving vehicles, shadow, and glare and (2) highly structured with low intra-class shape variance and overall high appearance consistency. To solve these issues, we propose a Homography Guided Fusion (HomoFusion) module to exploit temporally-adjacent video frames for complementary cues facilitating the correct classification of the partially occluded road lines or markings. To reduce computational complexity, a novel surface normal estimator is proposed to establish spatial correspondences between the sampled frames, allowing the HomoFusion module to perform a pixel-to-pixel attention mechanism in updating the representation of the occluded road lines or markings. Experiments on ApolloScape, a large-scale lane mark segmentation dataset, and ApolloScape Night with artificial simulated night-time road conditions, demonstrate that our method outperforms other existing SOTA lane mark segmentation models with less than 9\% of their parameters and computational complexity. We show that exploiting available camera intrinsic data and ground plane assumption for cross-frame correspondence can lead to a light-weight network with significantly improved performances in speed and accuracy. We also prove the versatility of our HomoFusion approach by applying it to the problem of water puddle segmentation and achieving SOTA performance.

Inclusive Design Insights from a Preliminary Image-Based Conversational Search Systems Evaluation

The digital realm has witnessed the rise of various search modalities, among which the Image-Based Conversational Search System stands out. This research delves into the design, implementation, and evaluation of this specific system, juxtaposing it against its text-based and mixed counterparts. A diverse participant cohort ensures a broad evaluation spectrum. Advanced tools facilitate emotion analysis, capturing user sentiments during interactions, while structured feedback sessions offer qualitative insights. Results indicate that while the text-based system minimizes user confusion, the image-based system presents challenges in direct information interpretation. However, the mixed system achieves the highest engagement, suggesting an optimal blend of visual and textual information. Notably, the potential of these systems, especially the image-based modality, to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities is highlighted. The study concludes that the Image-Based Conversational Search System, though challenging in some aspects, holds promise, especially when integrated into a mixed system, offering both clarity and engagement.

$L^p$-solutions of QSDE driven by Fermion fields with nonlocal conditions under non-Lipschitz coefficients

The main purpose of this paper is to obtain the existence and uniqueness of $L^p$-solution to quantum stochastic differential equation driven by Fermion fields with nonlocal conditions in the case of non-Lipschitz coefficients for $p>2$. The key to our technique is to make use of the Burkholder-Gundy inequality given by Pisier and Xu and Minkowski-type inequality to iterate instead of the fixed point theorem commonly used for nonlocal problems. Moreover, we also obtain the self-adjointness of the $L^p$-solution which is important in the study of optimal control problems.

Large Multilingual Models Pivot Zero-Shot Multimodal Learning across Languages

Recently there has been a significant surge in multimodal learning in terms of both image-to-text and text-to-image generation. However, the success is typically limited to English, leaving other languages largely behind. Building a competitive counterpart in other languages is highly challenging due to the low-resource nature of non-English multimodal data (i.e., lack of large-scale, high-quality image-text data). In this work, we propose MPM, an effective training paradigm for training large multimodal models in non-English languages. MPM demonstrates that Multilingual language models can Pivot zero-shot Multimodal learning across languages. Specifically, based on a strong multilingual large language model, multimodal models pretrained on English-only image-text data can well generalize to other languages in a (quasi)-zero-shot manner, even surpassing models trained on image-text data in native languages. Taking Chinese as a practice of MPM, we build large multimodal models VisCPM in image-to-text and text-to-image generation, which achieve state-of-the-art (open-source) performance in Chinese. To facilitate future research, we open-source codes and model weights at https://github.com/OpenBMB/VisCPM.git.

Exponential decay results for compressible viscous flows with vacuum

We are concerned with the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system in the two-dimensional torus, with rough data and vacuum : the initial velocity is in the Sobolev space H^1 and the initial density is only bounded and nonnegative. Arbitrary regions of vacuum are admissible, and no compatibility condition is required. Under these assumptions and for large enough bulk viscosity, global solutions have been constructed in [7]. The main goal of the paper is to establish that these solutions converge exponentially fast to a constant state, and to specify the convergence rate in terms of the viscosity coefficients. We also prove exponential decay estimates for the solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. This latter result extends to the torus case the recent paper [9] dedicated to this system in smooth bounded domains.

Reformulating Vision-Language Foundation Models and Datasets Towards Universal Multimodal Assistants

Recent Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) exhibit impressive abilities to perceive images and follow open-ended instructions. The capabilities of MLLMs depend on two crucial factors: the model architecture to facilitate the feature alignment of visual modules and large language models; the multimodal instruction tuning datasets for human instruction following. (i) For the model architecture, most existing models introduce an external bridge module to connect vision encoders with language models, which needs an additional feature-alignment pre-training. In this work, we discover that compact pre-trained vision language models can inherently serve as ``out-of-the-box'' bridges between vision and language. Based on this, we propose Muffin framework, which directly employs pre-trained vision-language models to act as providers of visual signals. (ii) For the multimodal instruction tuning datasets, existing methods omit the complementary relationship between different datasets and simply mix datasets from different tasks. Instead, we propose UniMM-Chat dataset which explores the complementarities of datasets to generate 1.1M high-quality and diverse multimodal instructions. We merge information describing the same image from diverse datasets and transforms it into more knowledge-intensive conversation data. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the Muffin framework and UniMM-Chat dataset. Muffin achieves state-of-the-art performance on a wide range of vision-language tasks, significantly surpassing state-of-the-art models like LLaVA and InstructBLIP. Our model and dataset are all accessible at https://github.com/thunlp/muffin.

View Consistent Purification for Accurate Cross-View Localization

This paper proposes a fine-grained self-localization method for outdoor robotics that utilizes a flexible number of onboard cameras and readily accessible satellite images. The proposed method addresses limitations in existing cross-view localization methods that struggle to handle noise sources such as moving objects and seasonal variations. It is the first sparse visual-only method that enhances perception in dynamic environments by detecting view-consistent key points and their corresponding deep features from ground and satellite views, while removing off-the-ground objects and establishing homography transformation between the two views. Moreover, the proposed method incorporates a spatial embedding approach that leverages camera intrinsic and extrinsic information to reduce the ambiguity of purely visual matching, leading to improved feature matching and overall pose estimation accuracy. The method exhibits strong generalization and is robust to environmental changes, requiring only geo-poses as ground truth. Extensive experiments on the KITTI and Ford Multi-AV Seasonal datasets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods, achieving median spatial accuracy errors below $0.5$ meters along the lateral and longitudinal directions, and a median orientation accuracy error below 2 degrees.

Model Calibration in Dense Classification with Adaptive Label Perturbation

For safety-related applications, it is crucial to produce trustworthy deep neural networks whose prediction is associated with confidence that can represent the likelihood of correctness for subsequent decision-making. Existing dense binary classification models are prone to being over-confident. To improve model calibration, we propose Adaptive Stochastic Label Perturbation (ASLP) which learns a unique label perturbation level for each training image. ASLP employs our proposed Self-Calibrating Binary Cross Entropy (SC-BCE) loss, which unifies label perturbation processes including stochastic approaches (like DisturbLabel), and label smoothing, to correct calibration while maintaining classification rates. ASLP follows Maximum Entropy Inference of classic statistical mechanics to maximise prediction entropy with respect to missing information. It performs this while: (1) preserving classification accuracy on known data as a conservative solution, or (2) specifically improves model calibration degree by minimising the gap between the prediction accuracy and expected confidence of the target training label. Extensive results demonstrate that ASLP can significantly improve calibration degrees of dense binary classification models on both in-distribution and out-of-distribution data. The code is available on https://github.com/Carlisle-Liu/ASLP.

Satellite Image Based Cross-view Localization for Autonomous Vehicle

Existing spatial localization techniques for autonomous vehicles mostly use a pre-built 3D-HD map, often constructed using a survey-grade 3D mapping vehicle, which is not only expensive but also laborious. This paper shows that by using an off-the-shelf high-definition satellite image as a ready-to-use map, we are able to achieve cross-view vehicle localization up to a satisfactory accuracy, providing a cheaper and more practical way for localization. While the utilization of satellite imagery for cross-view localization is an established concept, the conventional methodology focuses primarily on image retrieval. This paper introduces a novel approach to cross-view localization that departs from the conventional image retrieval method. Specifically, our method develops (1) a Geometric-align Feature Extractor (GaFE) that leverages measured 3D points to bridge the geometric gap between ground and overhead views, (2) a Pose Aware Branch (PAB) adopting a triplet loss to encourage pose-aware feature extraction, and (3) a Recursive Pose Refine Branch (RPRB) using the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm to align the initial pose towards the true vehicle pose iteratively. Our method is validated on KITTI and Ford Multi-AV Seasonal datasets as ground view and Google Maps as the satellite view. The results demonstrate the superiority of our method in cross-view localization with median spatial and angular errors within $1$ meter and $1^\circ$, respectively.

Resource-aware Probability-based Collaborative Odor Source Localization Using Multiple UAVs

Benefitting from UAVs' characteristics of flexible deployment and controllable movement in 3D space, odor source localization with multiple UAVs has been a hot research area in recent years. Considering the limited resources and insufficient battery capacities of UAVs, it is necessary to fast locate the odor source with low-complexity computation and minimal interaction under complicated environmental states. To this end, we propose a multi-UAV collaboration based odor source localization (\textit{MUC-OSL}) method, where source estimation and UAV navigation are iteratively performed, aiming to accelerate the searching process and reduce the resource consumption of UAVs. Specifically, in the source estimation phase, we present a collaborative particle filter algorithm on the basis of UAVs' cognitive difference and Gaussian fitting to improve source estimation accuracy. In the following navigation phase, an adaptive path planning algorithm is designed based on Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) to distributedly determine the subsequent flying direction and moving steps of each UAV. The results of experiments conducted on two simulation platforms demonstrate that \textit{MUC-OSL} outperforms existing efforts in terms of mean search time and success rate, and effectively reduces the resource consumption of UAVs.

Easy Maximum Empirical Likelihood Estimation of Linear Functionals Of A Probability Measure With Infinitely Many Constraints

In this article, we construct semiparametrically efficient estimators of linear functionals of a probability measure in the presence of side information using an easy empirical likelihood approach. We use estimated constraint functions and allow the number of constraints to grow with the sample size. Considered are three cases of information which can be characterized by infinitely many constraints: (1) the marginal distributions are known, (2) the marginals are unknown but identical, and (3) distributional symmetry. An improved spatial depth function is defined and its asymptotic properties are studied. Simulation results on efficiency gain are reported.

Improving Estimation Efficiency In Structural Equation Models By An Easy Empirical Likelihood Approach

In this article, we construct empirical likelihood (EL)-weighted estimators of linear functionals of a probability measure in the presence of side information. Motivated by nuisance parameters in semiparametric models with possibly infinite dimensions, we consider the use of estimated constraint functions and allow the number of constraints to grow with the sample size. We study the asymptotic properties and efficiency gains. The results are used to construct improved estimators of parameters in structural equation models. The EL-weighted estimators of parameters are shown to have reduced variances in a SEM in the presence of side information of stochastic independence of the random error and random covariate. Some simulation results on efficiency gain are reported.
