Unraveling the neutron skin thickness through jet charge in deep inelastic scattering

The neutron skin thickness in neutron-rich nuclei has traditionally been measured using elastic fixed target electron-nucleus scattering since the 1970s. In this paper, we propose a novel probe of the neutron skin thickness through deep inelastic scattering in electron-ion collisions, leveraging the intrinsic correlation between final-state jet charge distribution and initial-state partonic distributions in nucleons. Specifically, we demonstrate the sensitivity of jet charge distribution to the neutron skin thickness in $e$+Pb collisions with varying centralities, and in isobar collisions of $e$+Ru and $e$+Zr. We predict a strong suppression of positive jet charge distribution and an enhancement for negative jet charge distribution in peripheral electron-ion collisions, revealing the neutron skin effect. This proposal can also be extended to photon and Z-boson tagged jet charge distribution in proton-nucleus collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, providing an alternative access to neutron skin thickness.

$J/ψ$ production within a jet in high-energy proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions

Within the framework of leading power factorization formalism of nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics, we calculate the jet fragmentation function for $J/ψ$ production in proton-proton (pp) collisions ranging from $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV to $13$ TeV. The reasonable agreements between theory and experimental data indicate that $J/ψ$ production within a jet is mainly dominated by gluon fragmentation. Such a mechanism can be further tested by the predicted jet transverse momentum and radius dependence of jet fragmentation function. Based on the satisfying description of pp baseline, we carry out the first theoretical investigation on medium modification on $J/ψ$ production within jet in heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, using a linear Boltzmann transport model combined with hydrodynamics for the simulation of jet-medium interaction. The consistency with the experimental measurement on nuclear modification factor $R_{\text{AA}}$ by CMS collaboration reveals that the gluon jet quenching is the driving force for the suppression of $J/ψ$ production in jet. Furthermore, we make predictions for the dependence of $R_{\text{AA}}$ on the jet transverse momentum and jet radius $R$, which can be tested in future measurements to further constrain the flavor dependence of jet quenching.

Hadron productions and jet substructures associated with $Z^0/γ$ in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC

We carry out a detailed study of medium modifications on $Z^0$/$γ$+hadron correlations as well as jet substructures in association with $Z^0/γ$ in Pb+Pb collisions with $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV at the LHC. We utilize the Linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model to simulate the jet-medium interactions and medium response, and an extended cluster hadronization model to investigate the non-perturbative transition of quarks and gluons into final hadrons in heavy-ion collisions. Including hadronization effect, we can well describe $Z^0/γ$+hadrons correlations and $Z^0/γ$-tagged jet substructures in both p+p and Pb+Pb collisions simultaneously. Medium modification on jet profile and jet fragmentation functions indicate that particles carrying a large fraction of the jet momentum are generally closely aligned with the jet axis, whereas low-momentum particles are observed to have a much broader angular distribution relative to jet axis in Pb+Pb collisions due to jet-medium interactions. In particular, we find that $Z^0/γ$-tagged hadron correlations are sensitive to the soft particles from the dense medium and medium response, while jet-substructures show weak dependence on those soft hadrons with only a fraction of them falling inside the jet area

Flavor dependence of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions from a Bayesian analysis

We investigate the flavor dependence of jet quenching, by performing a systematic analysis of medium modifications on the inclusive jet, $γ$+jet, and $b$-jet in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. Our results from MadGraph+PYTHIA exhibit excellent agreement with experimental measurements of the inclusive jet, $γ$+jet and $b$-jet simultaneously in p+p collisions. We then utilize a Bayesian data-driven method to extract systematically the flavor-dependent jet energy loss distributions from experimental data, where the gluon, light quark and $b$-quark initiated energy loss distributions are well constrained and satisfy the predicted flavor hierarchy of jet quenching, i.e. $\langle ΔE_g \rangle > \langleΔE_q\rangle > \langleΔE_b\rangle$. It is shown that the quark-initiated jet energy loss distribution shows weaker centrality and $p_\text{T}$ dependence than the gluon-initiated one. We demonstrate the impacts of the slope of initial spectra, color-charge as well as parton mass dependent jet energy attenuation on the $γ/b$-jet suppression observed in heavy-ion collisions.

Unraveling Gluon Jet Quenching through $J/ψ$ Production in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Jet quenching has long been regarded as one of the key signatures for the formation of quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions. Despite significant efforts, the separate identification of quark and gluon jet quenching has remained as a challenge. Here we show that $J/ψ$ in high transverse momentum ($p_\text{T}$) region provides a uniquely sensitive probe of in-medium gluon energy loss since its production at high $p_\text{T}$ is particularly dominated by gluon fragmentation. Such gluon-dominance is first demonstrated for the baseline of proton-proton collisions within the framework of leading power NRQCD factorization formalism. We then use the linear Boltzmann transport model combined with hydrodynamics for the simulation of jet-medium interaction in nucleus-nucleus collisions. The satisfactory description of experimental data on both nuclear modification factor $R_{\text{AA}}$ and elliptic flow $v_2$ reveals, for the first time, that the gluon jet quenching is the driving force for high $p_\text{T}$ $J/ψ$ suppression. This novel finding is further confirmed by the data-driven Bayesian analyses of relevant experimental measurements, from which we also obtain the first quantitative extraction of the gluon energy loss distribution in the quark-gluon plasma.

Parton splitting scales of reclustered large-radius jets in high-energy nuclear collisions

We carry out the first theoretical investigation on yields and the hardest parton splitting of large-radius jets reclustered from small radius ($R=0.2$) anti-$k_t$ jets in Pb+Pb collisions, and confront them with the recent ATLAS measurements. The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model is employed for jet propagation and jet-induced medium excitation in the hot-dense medium. We demonstrate that, with their complex structures, the medium suppression of the reclustered large radius jets at $R=1$ is larger than that of inclusive $R=0.4$ jets defined conventionally. The large radius jet constituents are reclustered with the $k_t$ algorithm to obtain the splitting scale $\sqrt{d_{12}}$, which characterizes the transverse momentum scale for the hardest splitting in the jet. The large-radius jet production as a function of the splitting scale $\sqrt{d_{12}}$ of the hardest parton splitting is overall suppressed in Pb+Pb relative to p+p collisions due to the reduction of jets yields. A detailed analyses show that the alterations of jet substructures in Pb+Pb also make significant contribution to the splitting scale $\sqrt{d_{12}}$ dependence of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$. Numerical results for the medium modifications of the jet splitting angle $ΔR_{12}$ and the splitting fraction $z$ are also presented.

Quenching of jets tagged with $W$ bosons in high-energy nuclear collisions

We carry out the first detailed calculations of jet production associated with $W$ gauge bosons in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In our calculations, the production of $W$+jet in p+p collisions as a reference is obtained by Sherpa, which performs next-to-leading-order matrix element calculations matched to the resummation of parton shower simulations, while jet propagation and medium response in the quark-gluon plasma are simulated with the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model. We provide numerical predictions on seven observables of $W$+jet production with jet quenching in Pb+Pb collisions: the medium modification factor for the tagged jet cross sections $I_{AA}$, the distribution in invariant mass between the two leading jets in $N_{jets}\ge 2$ events $m_{jj}$, the missing $p_T$ or the vector sum of the lepton and jet transverse momentum $|\vec{p}_T^{Miss}|$, the summed scalar $p_T$ of all the jets in an event $S_T$, transverse momentum imbalance $x_{jW}$, average number of jets per $W$ boson $R_{jW}$, and azimuthal angle between the $W$ boson and jets $Δϕ_{jW}$. The distinct nuclear modifications of these seven observables in Pb+Pb relative to that in p+p collisions are presented with detailed discussions.

Production of W+jets in Relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We carry out a detailed calculations of W+jets production in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In our calculations, the production of W+jet in p+p reference is obtained from Sherpa, which matches next-to-leading-order matrix elements to the resummation of parton shower calculations. Jet propagation and medium response in the quark-gluon plasma is simulated with the Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model. We calculate five observables of W+jets productions with jet quenching effect in Pb+Pb collisions: event distribution as a function of the vector sum of the lepton and jets $|\vec{p}_T^{Miss}|$, nuclear effects for tagged jet cross sections $I_{AA}$, azimuthal angle correlations $Δϕ_{jW}$, mean value of momentum imbalance $\langle x_{jW}\rangle$, average number of jets per W boson $R_{jW}$. The nuclear modifications of these 5 observables due to jet quenching in Pb+Pb relative to that in p+p collisions are discussed.

The global geometrical property of jet events in high-energy nuclear collisions

We present the first theoretical study of medium modifications of the global geometrical pattern, i.e., transverse sphericity ($S_{\perp}$) distribution of jet events with parton energy loss in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In our investigation, POWHEG+PYTHIA is employed to make an accurate description of transverse sphericity in the p+p baseline, which combines the next-to-leading order (NLO) pQCD calculations with the matched parton shower (PS). The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model of the parton energy loss is implemented to simulate the in-medium evolution of jets. We calculate the event normalized transverse sphericity distribution in central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC, and give its medium modifications. An enhancement of transverse sphericity distribution at small $S_{\perp}$ region but a suppression at large $S_{\perp}$ region are observed in A+A collisions as compared to their p+p references, which indicates that in overall the geometry of jet events in Pb+Pb becomes more pencil-like. We demonstrate that for events with 2 jets in the final-state of heavy-ion collisions, the jet quenching makes the geometry more sphere-like with medium-induced gluon radiation. However, for events with $\ge 3$~jets, parton energy loss in the QCD medium leads to the events more pencil-like due to jet number reduction, where less energetic jets may lose their energies and then fall off the jet selection kinematic cut. These two effects offset each other and in the end result in more jetty events in heavy-ion collisions relative to that in p+p.

Transverse Momentum Balance and Angular Distribution of $b\bar{b}$ Dijets in Pb+Pb collisions

The productions of inclusive b-jet and $b\bar{b}$ dijets in Pb+Pb collisions have been investigated by considering the heavy quark and the light quark in-medium evolution simultaneously. The initial hard processes of inclusive b-jet and $b\bar{b}$ dijets productions are described by a next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower Monte Carlo (MC) event generator SHERPA which can be well-matched with the experimental data in p+p collisions. The framework combines the Langevin transport model to describe the evolution of the bottom quark also its collisional energy loss and the higher-twist description to consider the radiative energy loss of both the bottom and light quarks. We compare the theoretical simulation of inclusive jet and inclusive b-jet $R_{\rm AA}$ in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV with the experimental data, and then present the theoretical simulation of the momentum balance of the $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV with the recent CMS data for the first time. A similar trend as that in inclusive dijets has been observed in $b\bar{b}$ dijets, the production distribution is shifted to smaller $x_J$ due to the jet quenching effect. At last, the prediction of the normalized azimuthal angle distribution of the $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV has been reported. The medium induced energy loss effect of the $b\bar{b}$ dijets will overall suppress its production, but the same side ($Δϕ\to 0$ region) suffers more energy loss than away side ($Δϕ\to π$ region), therefore lead to the suppression on the same side and the enhancement on the away side in the normalized azimuthal angle distribution in A+A collisions.

Parton energy loss effect on Z+jet production in high-energy nuclear collisions

We give a report of medium modification of Z+jet correlations in Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider using Sherpa to generate initial Z+jet at next-leading-order matrix element matched parton shower, and the Linear Boltzmann Transport Model for jet propagation in the expanding quark-gluon-plasma. Our numerical calculations show excellent agreement with all available observables of Z+jet simultaneously in both proton + proton and Pb+Pb collisions. Our results can well explain the shift of momentum asymmetry $x_{jZ}=p_T^{jet}/p_T^Z$ as well as its mean values, the suppression of the jet yields per Z trigger $R_{jZ}$ and the modification of azimuthal angle correlation $Δϕ_{jZ}$. We also demonstrate that it is the energy loss effect on multi-jets from high-order corrections that leads to the suppression of the Z+jet correlation at small azimuthal angle difference $Δϕ_{jZ}$ and at small $x_{jZ}$. The jet shape reflecting transverse momentum distribution inside the jet is also calculated, which indicates that large fraction of jet energy is carried away from the jet axis in Pb+Pb collisions.

The production of $b\bar{b}$ dijet in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

We report our recent theoretical calculations for $b\bar{b}$ dijet production in high-energy nuclear collisions. The NLO+parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA has been employed to provide the pp baseline of $b\bar{b}$ dijet production. A framework which combines Langevin transport equation to describe the evolution of heavy quarks and the higher-twist scheme to consider the inelastic energy loss of both light and heavy partons has been implemented. Within this framework, we present the theoretical result of transverse momentum imbalance $x_J=p_{T1}/p_{T2}$ both for inclusive dijet and $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collision at 5.02 TeV. The energy loss of b jet would shift $x_J$ to smaller value relative to p+p reference which is consistent with the CMS data. In addition, we show the medium modification for angular correlation of $b\bar{b}$ dijet in A+A collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$~TeV. We observe a stronger suppression in small $Δϕ=|ϕ_{b1}-ϕ_{b2}|$ region where the gluon splitting processes dominate relative to large $Δϕ$ region. The difference leads to a modest suppression on near side ($Δϕ\sim 0$) and enhancement on away side ($Δϕ\simπ$).

Jet tomography in high-energy nuclear collisions

When an energetic parton traversing the QCD medium, it may suffer multiple scatterings and lose energy. This jet quenching phenomenon may lead to the suppression of leading hadron productions as well as medium modifications of full jet observables in heavy-ion collisions. In this talk we discuss the nuclear modification factors and yield ratios of identified meson such as $η$, $ρ^0$, $ϕ$, $ω$, and $K^0_{\rm S}$ as well as $π$ meson at large $p_T$ in A+A collisions at the next-to-leading order (NLO) with high-twist approach of parton energy loss. Then we discuss a newly developed formalism of combing NLO matrix elements and parton shower (PS) for initial hard production with parton energy loss in the QGP, and its application in investigating massive gauge boson ($Z^0$/$W^{\pm}$) tagged jet productions and $b\bar{b}$ dijet correlations in Pb+Pb at the LHC.

Z+jet correlation with NLO-matched parton-shower and jet-medium interaction in high-energy nuclear collisions

The impact of jet quenching on $Z^0$-tagged jets in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is investigated. We employ Sharpa Monte Carlo program that combines next-to-leading order matrix elements with matched resummation of parton shower to compute the initial $Z^0$+jet production. The Linear Boltzmann Transport (LBT) model is then used to simulate the propagation, energy attenuation of and medium response induced by jet partons in the quark-gluon plasma. With both higher-order corrections and matched soft/collinear radiation as well as a sophisticated treatment of parton energy loss and medium response in LBT, our numerical calculations can provide the best description so far of all available observables of $Z^0$+jet simultaneously in both p+p and Pb+Pb collisions, in particular, the shift of the distribution in transverse momentum asymmetry $x_{\rm jZ}=p_T^{\rm jet}/p_T^Z$, the modification of azimuthal angle correlation in $Δϕ_{\rm{j}Z}=|ϕ_{\rm jet}-ϕ_Z|$ and the overall suppression of average number of $Z^0$-tagged jets per boson $R_{\rm jZ}$ at $\sqrt s =5.02$ TeV as measured by the CMS experiment. We also show that higher-order corrections to $Z^0$+jet production play an indispensable role in understanding $Z^0$+jet azimuthal angle correlation at small and intermediate $Δϕ_{\rm jZ}$, and momentum imbalance at small $x_{\rm jZ}$. Jet quenching of the sub-leading jets is shown to lead to suppression of $Z^0$+jet correlation at small azimuthal angle difference $Δϕ_{\rm jZ}$ and at small $x_{\rm jZ}$.

Z+jet productions in heavy-ion collisions

We report a systematic study of Z+jet correlation in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC by combining the next-leading-order matrix elements calculations with matched parton shower in Sherpa for the initial Z+jet production, and Linear Boltzmann transport Model for jet propagation in the expanding quark-gluon-plasma. Our numerical results can well explain CMS measurements on Z+jet correlation in Pb+Pb collisions: the shift of $p_T$ imbalance $x_{jZ}=p_T^{jet}/p_T^Z$ and their mean values, the suppression of the average number of jet partners per Z boson $R_{jZ}$, as well as the modification of azimuthal angle correlations $Δϕ_{jZ}$. We also demonstrate that high-order corrections play a significant role in the understanding of Z+jet correlations at high energies.
