The colored Jones polynomial does not determine the Links--Gould polynomial

We prove that the colored Jones polynomial of a knot does not determine the Links--Gould polynomial (associated with the 4-dimensional representation of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)$) with two different approaches: the first is to find a concrete genus 2 mutation pair with different Links--Gould polynomials, and the second follows from the fact that the colored Jones polynomial is invariant under Conway mutation whereas the colored Links--Gould polynomial is not. The first approach also applies to a related family of polynomial invariants of Kashaev--Mangazeev, which are conjectured to be the $\mathfrak{sl}(n|1)$-knot invariants colored by the $2^n$-dimensional irreducible representation.

Small undecidable groups and unrecognizable 4-manifolds

We construct a $3$-generator $9$-relator group with unsolvable word problem. We use the group to construct two fixed-size Adian--Rabin families of group presentations, one with $4$ generators and $11$ relators, and another with $2$ generators and $10$ relators. As a consequence, $\#_7(S^2\times S^2)$ is topologically unrecognizable and $\#_9(S^2\times S^2)$ is smoothly unrecognizable. These algebraic and topological results improve the previous best known bounds by Borisov, Tancer, and Gordon. The construction of the group builds upon an example of Borisov and uses additional HNN extensions and Tietze eliminations to reduce the size of the presentation. We also provide a machine-checked Lean~4 formalization of the algebraic results.

The $\mathrm{FK}_3$ knot polynomial

We present the knot polynomial associated to the 12-dimensional sporadic Nichols algebra $\mathrm{FK}_3$ with automorphism, compute it for all knots with $\leq$ 16 crossings and discuss the found patterns. This knot polynomial is not a Vassiliev power series. We ponder how it compares to the knot polynomials that come from Lie algebras and their representations and what the other knot polynomials associated with the higher dimensional sporadic Nichols algebras are.

Trisection invariants of 4-manifolds are uncomputable

We prove that two invariants of smooth 4-manifolds defined in terms of trisections are uncomputable: the trisection genus and the Kirby-Thompson L-invariant. That is, there does not exist an algorithm that takes as input a triangulated closed orientable 4-manifold and outputs one of these quantities. The result on the L-invariant resolves the second part of Problem 4.116 in the K3 problem list. In the same spirit, we show that the PL multisection genus of PL manifolds is uncomputable in dimensions at least four.

Fixed-parameter tractable computation of Reshetikhin--Turaev knot polynomials via tensor networks

We give a thorough analysis of the time complexity of computing Reshetikhin--Turaev knot polynomials via tensor contractions on the associated tensor networks, showing that the computation is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to a parameter at most linear in the tree-width of the input knot diagram. When combined with existing approximation algorithms for tree decomposition, this recovers the sub-exponential bound $e^{O(\sqrt{n})}$ for the time complexity of computing any Reshetikhin--Turaev knot polynomial. We accompany this paper with an implementation of such an algorithm in SnapPy, which computes any Reshetikhin--Turaev knot polynomial given its $R$-matrix and ribbon element.

Positivity and log concavity of the Links--Gould polynomial of knots

Motivated by the recent work of Harper--Kohli--Song--Tahar, we formulate a positivity, hole-free, and log-concavity conjecture for the Links--Gould polynomial of alternating links and verify it for all 51.3 million alternating knots with at most 19 crossings. All but 544 of those knots satisfy a stronger type-B log-concavity condition characterized by the slopes of edges in the subdivision of the monomial support induced by the log coefficients.

Patterns of the $V_2$-polynomial of knots

Recently, Kashaev and the first author constructed an $R$-matrix from a Nichols algebra with an automorphism, that leads, via the Reshetikhin--Turaev functor, to a multivariable polynomial invariant of knots. Applying this to a rank 2 Nichols algebra, results in a sequence $V_n$ of 2-variable knot polynomials with integer coefficients, the first polynomial been identified with the Links--Gould polynomial. In this note we present the results of the computation of the $V_n$-polynomials for $n=1,2,3,4$. This leads to the discovery of emerging patterns, including the genus bound for $V_2$ being an equality for all 352.2 million knots with at most $19$ crossings, as well as unexpected Conway mutations that seem undetected by the $V_n$-polynomials as well as by Heegaard Floer Homology and Khovanov Homology.

The complete $10$-tetrahedra census of orientable cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds

We extend the complete census of orientable cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifolds to $10$ tetrahedra, giving the next $150730$ manifolds and their $496638$ minimal ideal triangulations. As applications, we find the precisely $439898$ exceptional Dehn fillings on them, revealing the next $1849$ simplest hyperbolic knot exteriors in $S^3$. We also give the simplest example of an orientable cusped hyperbolic $3$-manifold containing a closed totally geodesic surface.

Algebraic aspects of holomorphic quantum modular forms

Matrix-valued holomorphic quantum modular forms are intricate objects that arise in successive refinements of the Volume Conjecture of knots and involve three holomorphic, asymptotic and arithmetic objects. It is expected that the algebraic properties of these objects can be deduced from the algebraic properties of descendant state integrals, and we illustrate this for the case of the $(-2,3,7)$-pretzel knot.
