Large-$S$ limit of the large-$N$ theory for the triangular antiferromagnet

Large-$S$ and large-$N$ theories (spin value $S$ and spinor component number $N$) are complementary, and sometimes conflicting, approaches to quantum magnetism. While large-$S$ spin-wave theory captures the correct semiclassical behavior, large-$N$ theories, on the other hand, emphasize the quantumness of spin fluctuations. In order to evaluate the possibility of the non-trivial recovery of the semiclassical magnetic excitations within a large-$N$ approach, we compute the large-$S$ limit of the dynamic spin structure of the triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet within a Schwinger boson spin representation. We demonstrate that, only after the incorporation of Gaussian ($1/N$) corrections to the saddle-point ($N=\infty$) approximation, we are able to exactly reproduce the linear spin wave theory results in the large-$S$ limit. The key observation is that the effect of $1/N$ corrections is to cancel out exactly the main contribution of the saddle-point solution; while the collective modes (magnons) consist of two spinon bound states arising from the poles of the RPA propagator. This result implies that it is essential to consider the interaction of the spinons with the emergent gauge fields and that the magnon dispersion relation should not be identified with that of the saddle-point spinons.

Vison Crystals in an Extended Kitaev Model on the Honeycomb Lattice

We introduce an extension of the Kitaev honeycomb model by including four-spin interactions that preserve the local gauge structure and hence the integrability of the original model. The extended model has a rich phase diagram containing five distinct vison crystals, as well as a symmetric $π$-flux spin liquid with a Fermi surface of Majorana fermions and a sequence of Lifshitz transitions. We discuss possible experimental signatures and, in particular, present finite-temperature Monte Carlo calculations of the specific heat and the static vison structure factor. We argue that our extended model emerges naturally from generic perturbations to the Kitaev honeycomb model.

Principal Chiral Model in Correlated Electron Systems

We discuss noncollinear magnetic phenomena whose local order parameter is characterized by more than one spin vector. By focusing on the simple cases of 2D triangular and 3D pyrochlore lattices, we demonstrate that their low-energy theories can be described by a one-parametric class of sigma models continuously interpolating between the classical Heisenberg model and the principal chiral model ${\rm Tr} \,\left( \partial_a U \partial_a U^\dagger\right)$ for all $U\in \text{SU}(2)$. The target space can be viewed as a U$(1)$ fibration over the $CP(1)$ space. The 3D version of our model is further generalized to break spatial and spin rotation symmetry $\text{SO}(3) \times \text{SO}(3) \to \text{SO}(3)$.

Large magnetic thermal conductivity induced by frustration in low-dimensional quantum magnets

We study the magnetic field-dependence of the thermal conductivity due to magnetic excitations in frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains. Near the saturation field, the system is described by a dilute gas of weakly-interacting fermions (free-fermion fixed point). We show that in this regime the thermal conductivity exhibits a non-monotonic behavior as a function of the ratio $α= J_2/J_1$ between second and first nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. This result is a direct consequence of the splitting of the single-particle dispersion minimum into two minima that takes place at the Lifshitz point $α=1/4$. Upon increasing $α$ from zero, the inverse mass vanishes at $α=1/4$ and it increases monotonically from zero for $α\geq 1/4$. By deriving an effective low-energy theory of the dilute gas of fermions, we demonstrate that the Drude weight $K_{\rm th}$ of the thermal conductivity exhibits a similar dependence on $α$ near the saturation field. Moreover, this theory predicts a transition between a two-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and a vector-chiral phase at a critical value $α=α_c$ that agrees very well with previous density matrix renormalization group results. We also show that the resulting curve $K_{\rm th}(α)$ is in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization (ED) results. Our ED results also show that $K_{\rm th}(α)$ has a pronounced minimum at $α\simeq 0.7$ and it decreases for sufficiently large $α$ at lower magnetic field values. We also demonstrate that the thermal conductivity is significantly affected by the presence of magnetothermal coupling.

Dynamical structure factor of the triangular antiferromagnet: the Schwinger boson theory beyond the mean field approach

We compute the zero temperature dynamical structure factor $S({\bf q},ω)$ of the triangular lattice Heisenberg model (TLHM) using a Schwinger boson approach that includes the Gaussian fluctuations ($1/N$ corrections) of the saddle point solution. While the ground state of this model exhibits a well-known 120$^{\circ}$ magnetic ordering, experimental observations have revealed a strong quantum character of the excitation spectrum. We conjecture that this phenomenon arises from the proximity of the ground state of the TLHM to the quantum melting point separating the magnetically ordered and spin liquid states. Within this scenario, magnons are described as collective modes (two spinon-bound states) of a spinon condensate (Higgs phase) that spontaneously breaks the SU(2) symmetry of the TLHM. Crucial to our results is the proper account of this spontaneous symmetry breaking. The main qualitative difference relative to semi-classical treatments ($1/S$ expansion) is the presence of a high-energy spinon continuum extending up to about three times the single-magnon bandwidth. In addition, the magnitude of the ordered moment ($m=0.224$) agrees very well with numerical results and the low energy part of the single-magnon dispersion is in very good agreement with series expansions. Our results indicate that the Schwinger boson approach is an adequate starting point for describing the excitation spectrum of some magnetically ordered compounds that are near the quantum melting point separating this Higgs phase from the {\it deconfined} spin liquid state.

Pairing from strong repulsion in triangular lattice Hubbard model

We propose a paring mechanism between holes in the dilute limit of doped frustrated Mott insulators. Hole pairing arises from a hole-hole-magnon three-body bound state. This pairing mechanism has its roots on single-hole kinetic energy frustration, which favors antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations around the hole. We demonstrate that the AFM polaron (hole-magnon bound state) produced by a single-hole propagating on a field-induced polarized background is strong enough to bind a a second hole. The effective interaction between these three-body bound states is repulsive, implying that this pairing mechanism is relevant for superconductivity.

Spin-orbit interaction driven dimerization in one dimensional frustrated magnets

We study the effect of spin-orbit interaction on one-dimensional U(1)-invariant frustrated magnets with dominant critical nematic fluctuations. The spin-orbit coupling explicitly breaks the U(1) symmetry of arbitrary global spin rotations about the high-symmetry axis down to $Z_2$ (invariance under a $π$-rotation). Given that the nematic order parameter is invariant under a $π$-rotation, it is relevant to ask if other discrete symmetries can be spontaneously broken. Here we demonstrate that the spin-orbit coupling induces a bond density wave that spontaneously breaks the translational symmetry and opens a gap in the excitation spectrum.

Itinerant chiral ferromagnetism in a trapped Rashba spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas

How ferromagnetic phases emerge in itinerant systems is an outstanding problem in quantum magnetism. Here we consider a repulsive two-component Fermi gas confined in a two dimensional isotropic harmonic potential and subject to a large Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling, whose single-particle dispersion can be tailored by adjusting the SO coupling strength. We show that the interplay among SO coupling, correlation effects and mean-field repulsion leads to a competition between ferromagnetic and non-magnetic phases. At intermediate interaction strengths, ferromagnetic phase emerges which can be well described by the mean-field Hartree-Fock theory; whereas at strong interaction strengths, a strongly correlated non-magnetic phase is favored due to the beyond-mean-field quantum correlation effects. Furthermore, the ferromagnetic phase of this system possesses a chiral current density induced by the Rashba spin-orbit coupling, whose experimental signature is investigated.

Itinerant magnetism in Weyl spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas

Magnetic ordering of itinerant fermionic systems is at the forefront of condensed matter physics dating back to Stoner's instability. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) which couples two essential ingredients of an itinerant fermionic system, namely spin and orbital motion, opens up new horizons to this long-standing problem. Here we report that the itinerant ferromagnetism is absent in 3D Fermi gas with a Weyl SOC and various itinerant spin density waves emerge instead, which is deeply rooted in the unique symmetry and spin-momentum locking effect in spin-orbit coupled systems. What is more appealing is that, the strong SOC provides a new and efficient mechanism to realize itinerant spin density waves at extremely weak repulsion---a significant benefit for present ultra-cold atom experiment. These novel phenomena can be probed by Bragg spectroscopy, time of flight imaging and {\sl In-Situ } measurements in ultra-cold atom experiment.

Collective modes of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in the repulsive regime

We investigate the collective modes in the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas with repulsive s-wave interaction. The interplay between spin-orbit coupling and atom-atom interactions plays the crucial role in the collective behaviors of Fermi gas. In contrast with ordinary Fermi liquid, spin-orbit coupled Fermi gas has strongly correlated spin and density excitations. Within the scheme of random phase approximation, we classify collective modes based on the symmetry group and determine their properties via the poles of corresponding correlation functions. Besides, the particle-hole continuum is obtained, where the imaginary part of these correlation functions become non-vanishing. We make comparisons with collective excitations in the ordinary Fermi liquid without spin-orbit coupling and in a helical liquid, i.e., surface states of a three dimensional topological insulator. We also propose an experimental protocol for detecting these collective modes and discuss corresponding experimental signatures in the ultracold Fermi gases experiment.

Normal state properties of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in the upper branch of energy spectrum

We investigate normal state properties of spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases with repulsive s-wave interaction, in the absence of molecule formation, i.e., in the so-called "upper branch". Within the framework of random phase approximation, we derive analytical expressions for the quasi-particle lifetime $τ_s$, the effective mass $m_s^*$, and the Green's function renormalization factor $Z_s$ in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In contrast to spin-orbit coupled electron gas with Coulomb interaction, we show that the modifications are dependent on the Rashba band index s, and occur in the first order of the spin-orbit coupling strength. We also calculate experimental observable such as spectral weight, density of state and specific heat, which exhibit significant differences from their counterparts without spin-orbit coupling. We expect our microscopic calculations of these Fermi liquid parameters would have the immediate applications to the spin-orbit coupled Fermi gases in the upper branch of the energy spectrum.

Interaction and filling-induced quantum anomalous Hall effect in ultra-cold neutral Bose-Fermi mixture on hexagonal lattice

We investigate the quantum anomalous Hall effect in a mixture of ultra-cold neutral bosons and fermions held on a hexagonal optical lattice. In the strong atom-atom interaction limit, composite fermions composed of one fermion with bosons or bosonic holes in the mixture are formed. Such composite fermions have already been generated successfully in experiment [Nat. Phys. {\bf 7}, 642 (2011)]. Here we predict that this kind of composite fermions may provide a realization of the quantum anomalous Hall effect by tuning the atom-atom interaction or the filling of the bosons in the mixture. We also discuss the corresponding experimental signatures of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the Bose-Fermi mixture on hexagonal optical lattice.
