IS2N: Intent-Driven Security Software-Defined Network with Blockchain

Software-defined network (SDN) is characterized by its programmability, flexibility, and the separation of control and data planes. However, SDN still have many challenges, particularly concerning the security of network information synchronization and network element registration. Blockchain and intent-driven networks are recent technologies to establish secure and intelligent SDN. This article investigates the blockchain-based architecture and intent-driven mechanisms to implement intent-driven security software-defined networks (IS2N). Specifically, we propose a novel four-layer architecture of the IS2N with security capabilities. We integrate an intent-driven security management mechanism in the IS2N to achieve automate network security management. Finally, we develop an IS2N platform with blockchain middle-layer to achieve security capabilities and security store network-level snapshots, such as device registration and OpenFlow messages. Our simulations show that IS2N is more flexible than conventional strategies at resolving problems during network operations and has a minimal effect on the SDN.

A Quantitative Framework for Network Resilience Evaluation using Dynamic Bayesian Network

Measuring and evaluating network resilience has become an important aspect since the network is vulnerable to both uncertain disturbances and malicious attacks. Networked systems are often composed of many dynamic components and change over time, which makes it difficult for existing methods to access the changeable situation of network resilience. This paper establishes a novel quantitative framework for evaluating network resilience using the Dynamic Bayesian Network. The proposed framework can be used to evaluate the network's multi-stage resilience processes when suffering various attacks and recoveries. First, we define the dynamic capacities of network components and establish the network's five core resilience capabilities to describe the resilient networking stages including preparation, resistance, adaptation, recovery, and evolution; the five core resilience capabilities consist of rapid response capability, sustained resistance capability, continuous running capability, rapid convergence capability, and dynamic evolution capability. Then, we employ a two-time slices approach based on the Dynamic Bayesian Network to quantify five crucial performances of network resilience based on core capabilities proposed above. The proposed approach can ensure the time continuity of resilience evaluation in time-varying networks. Finally, our proposed evaluation framework is applied to different attacks and recovery conditions in typical simulations and real-world network topology. Results and comparisons with extant studies indicate that the proposed method can achieve a more accurate and comprehensive evaluation and can be applied to network scenarios under various attack and recovery intensities.

Building an Efficient Intrusion Detection System Based on Feature Selection and Ensemble Classifier

Intrusion detection system (IDS) is one of extensively used techniques in a network topology to safeguard the integrity and availability of sensitive assets in the protected systems. Although many supervised and unsupervised learning approaches from the field of machine learning have been used to increase the efficacy of IDSs, it is still a problem for existing intrusion detection algorithms to achieve good performance. First, lots of redundant and irrelevant data in high-dimensional datasets interfere with the classification process of an IDS. Second, an individual classifier may not perform well in the detection of each type of attacks. Third, many models are built for stale datasets, making them less adaptable for novel attacks. Thus, we propose a new intrusion detection framework in this paper, and this framework is based on the feature selection and ensemble learning techniques. In the first step, a heuristic algorithm called CFS-BA is proposed for dimensionality reduction, which selects the optimal subset based on the correlation between features. Then, we introduce an ensemble approach that combines C4.5, Random Forest (RF), and Forest by Penalizing Attributes (Forest PA) algorithms. Finally, voting technique is used to combine the probability distributions of the base learners for attack recognition. The experimental results, using NSL-KDD, AWID, and CIC-IDS2017 datasets, reveal that the proposed CFS-BA-Ensemble method is able to exhibit better performance than other related and state of the art approaches under several metrics.

A Cost-effective Shuffling Method against DDoS Attacks using Moving Target Defense

Moving Target Defense (MTD) has emerged as a newcomer into the asymmetric field of attack and defense, and shuffling-based MTD has been regarded as one of the most effective ways to mitigate DDoS attacks. However, previous work does not acknowledge that frequent shuffles would significantly intensify the overhead. MTD requires a quantitative measure to compare the cost and effectiveness of available adaptations and explore the best trade-off between them. In this paper, therefore, we propose a new cost-effective shuffling method against DDoS attacks using MTD. By exploiting Multi-Objective Markov Decision Processes to model the interaction between the attacker and the defender, and designing a cost-effective shuffling algorithm, we study the best trade-off between the effectiveness and cost of shuffling in a given shuffling scenario. Finally, simulation and experimentation on an experimental software defined network (SDN) indicate that our approach imposes an acceptable shuffling overload and is effective in mitigating DDoS attacks.
