Dynamical comparison for local homeomorphisms

We prove dynamical comparison for Deaconu--Renault groupoids associated to minimal surjective non-injective local homeomorphisms of compact metrizable spaces with finite Lebesgue covering dimension. As a corollary, the associated $C^*$-algebras are UCT Kirchberg algebras, recovering results by Carlsen--Thomsen via dynamical methods. In the zero-dimensional case, our result also verifies Matui's AH-conjecture for these groupoids using a recent breakthrough of Xin Li. Our proof combines techniques from both the purely infinite and stably finite regimes: We construct partial actions of non-abelian free groups as suitable ``large subgroupoids'' and establish comparison properties for these using the paradoxical towers technique developed by Gardella--Geffen--Kranz--Naryshkin. The boundary of the subgroupoid is controlled by a groupoid version of the topological small boundary property which we deduce from finite covering dimension of the unit space. As a byproduct, we prove the classical small boundary property for minimal actions of countable discrete groups on finite-dimensional compact metrizable spaces without any freeness assumption.

Cartan subalgebras in self-similar graph $C^*$-algebras

For a self-similar graph $(G, E)$, we find a distinguished subgroupoid of the associated path groupoid $\mathcal{G}_{G,E}$ -- the symmetric cycline subgroupoid $\mathcal{S}_{\text{sym}}$. If the acting group $G$ is abelian, we show that $\mathcal{S}_{\text{sym}}$ is open, abelian, and normal. For $G=\mathbb{Z}$, we describe the dual bundle $\hat{\mathcal{S}}_{\text{sym}}$ of $\mathcal{S}_{\text{sym}}$ which can be used to provide a different groupoid model for the self-similar graph $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{Z}, E}\cong C^*_r(\mathcal{G}_{\mathbb{Z},E})$. For a large class of self-similar graphs $(\mathbb{Z}, E)$, we further prove that $\mathcal{S}_{\text{sym}}$ is maximal among open abelian subgroupoids of $\mathrm{Iso}(\mathcal{G}_{\mathbb{Z},E})^{\circ}$ and closed in $\mathcal{G}_{\mathbb{Z},E}$, so that it gives rise to a Cartan subalgebra of $\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{Z}, E}$. This result seems new even for genuine actions. Our proofs heavily rely on careful studies of dynamical behaviours of cycline triples of $(\mathbb{Z}, E)$ and on a dynamical-flavour classification for the vertices of $E$. Some results hold in more general settings and may be of independent interest.

Uniqueness for embeddings of nuclear $C^*$-algebras into type II$_{1}$ factors

Let $A$ be a separable, unital and exact $C^*$-algebra satisfying the universal coefficient theorem. We prove uniqueness theorems up to unitary conjugacy for unital, full and nuclear maps from $A$ into ultraproducts of finite von Neumann factors: any two such maps agreeing on traces and total $K$-theory are unitarily equivalent. There are two consequences. Firstly if one takes the factors to be a sequence $(M_{k_n})_{n}$ of matrix algebras, we obtain a uniqueness result for quasidiagonal approximations of $A$. Secondly, when $(\mathcal M,τ_{\calM})$ is a II$_1$ factor, a pair $ϕ,ψ:A\to\mathcal M$ of unital, injective and nuclear maps are norm approximately unitarily equivalent if and only if $τ_{\mathcal M}\circϕ=τ_{\mathcal M}\circψ$. The main strategy is to use Schafhauser's classification of lifts along the trace--kernel extension. Since our codomains may lack the tensorial absorption properties needed in this work, the main new ingredient is a suitable $KK$-uniqueness theorem tailored to our situation. This is inspired by $KK$-uniqueness theorems of Loreaux, Ng and Sutradhar.

K-stability of Z-stable C*-algebras

We provide a shorter new proof of the fact that Z-stable C*-algebras are K1-surjective using the Rørdam-Winter picture of the Jiang-Su algebra Z. Consequently, we recapture the K-stability of Z-stable C*-algebras.
