Few-photon scattering and emission from open quantum systems

We show how to use the input-output formalism compute the propagator for an open quantum system, i.e. quantum networks with a low dimensional quantum system coupled to one or more loss channels. The total propagator is expressed entirely in terms of the Green's functions of the low dimensional quantum system, and it is shown that these Green's functions can be computed entirely from the evolution of the low-dimensional system with an effective non-hermitian Hamiltonian. Our formalism generalizes the previous works that have focused on time independent Hamiltonians to systems with time dependent Hamiltonians, making it a suitable computational tool for the analysis of a number of experimentally interesting quantum systems. We illustrate our formalism by applying it to analyze photon emission and scattering from driven and undriven two-level system and three- level lambda system.

Generate tensor network state by sequential single-photon scattering in waveguide QED systems

We propose a scheme to generate photonic tensor network states by sequential scattering of photons in waveguide QED systems. We show that sequential scatterings can convert a series of unentangled photons into any type of matrix product states. We also demonstrate the possibility of generating projected entangled pair states with arbitrary network representation by photon re-scattering.

Creating anyons from photons using a nonlinear resonator lattice subject to dynamic modulation

We study a one-dimensional photonic resonator lattice with Kerr nonlinearity under the dynamic modulation. With an appropriate choice of the modulation frequency and phase, we find that this system can be used to create anyons from photons. By coupling the resonators with external waveguides, the anyon characteristics can be explored by measuring the transport property of the photons in the external waveguides.

Fano Interference in Two-Photon Transport

We present a general input-output formalism for the few-photon transport in multiple waveguide channels coupled to a local cavity. Using this formalism, we study the effect of Fano interference in two-photon quantum transport. We show that the physics of Fano interference can manifest as an asymmetric spectral line shape in the frequency dependence of the two-photon correlation function. The two-photon fluorescence spectrum, on the other hand, does not exhibit the physics of Fano interference.

General structure of two-photon S matrix in waveguide quantum electrodynamics systems containing a local quantum system with multiple ground states

We present the general structure of two-photon S matrix for a waveguide coupled to a local quantum system that supports multiple ground states. The presence of the multiple ground states results in a non-commutative aspect of the system with respect to the exchange of the orders of photons. Consequently, the two-photon S matrix significantly differs from the standard form as described by the cluster decomposition principle in the quantum field theory.

Input-Output Formalism for Few-Photon Transport: A Systematic Treatment Beyond Two Photons

We provide a systematic treatment of $N$-photon transport in a waveguide coupled to a local system, using the input-output formalism. The main result of the paper is a general connection between the $N$-photon S matrix and the Green functions of the local system. We also show that the computation can be significantly simplified, by exploiting the connectedness structure of both the S matrix and the Green function, and by computing the Green function using an effective Hamiltonian that involves only the degrees of freedom of the local system. We illustrate our formalism by computing $N$-photon transport through a cavity containing a medium with Kerr nonlinearity, with $N$ up to 3.

Run-up amplification of transient long waves

The extreme characteristics of long wave run-up are studied in this paper. First we give a brief overview of the existing theory which is mainly based on the hodograph transformation (Carrier & Greenspan, 1958). Then, using numerical simulations, we build on the work of Stefanakis et al. (2011) for an infinite sloping beach and we find that resonant run-up amplification of monochromatic waves is robust to spectral perturbations of the incoming wave and resonant regimes do exist for certain values of the frequency. In the setting of a finite beach attached to a constant depth region, resonance can only be observed when the incoming wavelength is larger than the distance from the undisturbed shoreline to the seaward boundary. Wavefront steepness is also found to play a role in wave run-up, with steeper waves reaching higher run-up values.
