Lattice-Based Minimum-Distortion Data Hiding

Lattices have been conceived as a powerful tool for data hiding. While conventional studies and applications focus on achieving the optimal robustness versus distortion tradeoff, in some applications such as data hiding in medical/physiological signals, the primary concern is to achieve a minimum amount of distortion to the cover signal. In this paper, we revisit the celebrated quantization index modulation (QIM) scheme and propose a minimum-distortion version of it, referred to as MD-QIM. The crux of MD-QIM is to move the data point to only the boundary of the Voronoi region of the lattice point indexed by a message, which suffices for subsequent correct decoding. At any fixed code rate, the scheme achieves the minimum amount of distortion by sacrificing the robustness to the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) attacks. Simulation results confirm that our scheme significantly outperforms QIM in terms of mean square error (MSE), peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and percentage residual difference (PRD).

Lattice Reduction over Imaginary Quadratic Fields

Complex bases, along with direct-sums defined by rings of imaginary quadratic integers, induce algebraic lattices. In this work, we study such lattices and their reduction algorithms. Firstly, when the lattice is spanned over a two dimensional basis, we show that the algebraic variant of Gauss's algorithm returns a basis that corresponds to the successive minima of the lattice if the chosen ring is Euclidean. Secondly, we extend the celebrated Lenstra-Lenstra-Lovász (LLL) reduction from over real bases to over complex bases. Properties and implementations of the algorithm are examined. In particular, satisfying Lovász's condition requires the ring to be Euclidean. Lastly, we numerically show the time-advantage of using algebraic LLL by considering lattice bases generated from wireless communications and cryptography.

GMD-Based Hybrid Beamforming for Large Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered to be an energy-efficient approach to reshape the wireless environment for improved throughput. Its passive feature greatly reduces the energy consumption, which makes RIS a promising technique for enabling the future smart city. Existing beamforming designs for RIS mainly focus on optimizing the spectral efficiency for single carrier systems. To avoid the complicated bit allocation on different spatial domain subchannels in MIMO systems, in this paper, we propose a geometric mean decomposition-based beamforming for RIS-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) hybrid MIMO systems so that multiple parallel data streams in the spatial domain can be considered to have the same channel gain. Specifically, by exploiting the common angular-domain sparsity of mmWave massive MIMO channels over different subcarriers, a simultaneous orthogonal match pursuit algorithm is utilized to obtain the optimal multiple beams from an oversampling 2D-DFT codebook. Moreover, by only leveraging the angle of arrival and angle of departure associated with the line of sight (LoS) channels, we further design the phase shifters for RIS by maximizing the array gain for LoS channel. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can achieve better BER performance than conventional approaches. Our work is an initial attempt to discuss the broadband hybrid beamforming for RIS-assisted mmWave hybrid MIMO systems.

On Low-complexity Lattice Reduction Algorithms for Large-scale MIMO Detection: the Blessing of Sequential Reduction

Lattice reduction is a popular preprocessing strategy in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection. In a quest for developing a low-complexity reduction algorithm for large-scale problems, this paper investigates a new framework called sequential reduction (SR), which aims to reduce the lengths of all basis vectors. The performance upper bounds of the strongest reduction in SR are given when the lattice dimension is no larger than 4. The proposed new framework enables the implementation of a hash-based low-complexity lattice reduction algorithm, which becomes especially tempting when applied to large-scale MIMO detection. Simulation results show that, compared to other reduction algorithms, the hash-based SR algorithm exhibits the lowest complexity while maintaining comparable error performance.

Ring Compute-and-Forward over Block-Fading Channels

The Compute-and-Forward protocol in quasi-static channels normally employs lattice codes based on the rational integers $\mathbb{Z}$, Gaussian integers $\mathbb{Z}\left[i\right]$ or Eisenstein integers $\mathbb{Z}\left[ω\right]$, while its extension to more general channels often assumes channel state information at transmitters (CSIT). In this paper, we propose a novel scheme for Compute-and-Forward in block-fading channels without CSIT, which is referred to as Ring Compute-and-Forward because the fading coefficients are quantized to the canonical embedding of a ring of algebraic integers. Thanks to the multiplicative closure of the algebraic lattices employed, a relay is able to decode an algebraic-integer linear combination of lattice codewords. We analyze its achievable computation rates and show it outperforms conventional Compute-and-Forward based on $\mathbb{Z}$-lattices. By investigating the effect of Diophantine approximation by algebraic conjugates, we prove that the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) of the optimized computation rate is ${n}/{L}$, where $n$ is the number of blocks and $L$ is the number of users.

On the Optimality of Gauss's Algorithm over Euclidean Imaginary Quadratic Fields

In this paper, we continue our previous work on the reduction of algebraic lattices over imaginary quadratic fields for the special case when the lattice is spanned over a two dimensional basis. In particular, we show that the algebraicvariant of Gauss algorithm returns a basis that corresponds to the successive minima of the lattice in polynomial time if the chosen ring is Euclidean.

Markov chain Monte Carlo Methods For Lattice Gaussian Sampling: Lattice Reduction and Decoding Optimization

Sampling from the lattice Gaussian distribution has emerged as an important problem in coding, decoding and cryptography. In this paper, lattice reduction technique is adopted to Gibbs sampler for lattice Gaussian sampling. Firstly, with respect to lattice Gaussian distribution, the convergence rate of systematic scan Gibbs sampling is derived and we show it is characterized by the Hirschfeld-Gebelein-Rényi (HGR) maximal correlation among the multivariate of being sampled. Therefore, lattice reduction is applied to formulate an equivalent lattice Gaussian distribution but with less correlated multivariate, which leads to a better Markov mixing due to the enhanced convergence rate. Then, we extend the proposed lattice-reduction-aided Gibbs sampling to lattice decoding, where the choice of the standard deviation for the sampling is fully investigated. A customized solution that suits for each specific decoding case by Euclidean distance is given, thus resulting in a better trade-off between Markov mixing and sampler decoding. Moreover, based on it, a startup mechanism is also proposed for Gibbs sampler decoding, where decoding complexity can be reduced without performance loss. Simulation results based on large-scale MIMO detection are presented to confirm the performance gain and complexity reduction.

Hybrid Vector Perturbation Precoding: The Blessing of Approximate Message Passing

Vector perturbation (VP) precoding is a promising technique for multiuser communication systems operating in the downlink. In this work, we introduce a hybrid framework to improve the performance of lattice reduction (LR) aided precoding in VP. First, we perform a simple precoding using zero forcing (ZF) or successive interference cancellation (SIC) based on a reduced lattice basis. Since the signal space after LR-ZF or LR-SIC precoding can be shown to be bounded to a small range, then along with sufficient orthogonality of the lattice basis guaranteed by LR, they collectively pave the way for the subsequent application of an approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm, which further boosts the performance of any suboptimal precoder. Our work shows that the AMP algorithm can be beneficial for a lattice decoding problem whose data symbols lie in integers $\mathbb{Z}$ and entries of the lattice basis may bot be i.i.d. Gaussian. Numerical results confirm the low-complexity AMP algorithm can improve the symbol error rate (SER) performance of LR aided precoding significantly. Lastly, the hybrid scheme is also proved effective when solving the data detection problem of massive MIMO systems without using LR.

Boosted KZ and LLL Algorithms

There exist two issues among popular lattice reduction (LR) algorithms that should cause our concern. The first one is Korkine-Zolotarev (KZ) and Lenstra-Lenstra-Lovasz (LLL) algorithms may increase the lengths of basis vectors. The other is KZ reduction suffers much worse performance than Minkowski reduction in terms of providing short basis vectors, despite its superior theoretical upper bounds. To address these limitations, we improve the size reduction steps in KZ and LLL to set up two new efficient algorithms, referred to as boosted KZ and LLL, for solving the shortest basis problem (SBP) with exponential and polynomial complexity, respectively. Both of them offer better actual performance than their classic counterparts, and the performance bounds for KZ are also improved. We apply them to designing integer-forcing (IF) linear receivers for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communications. Our simulations confirm their rate and complexity advantages.

Compute-and-Forward over Block-Fading Channels Using Algebraic Lattices

Previous approaches to compute-and-forward (C\&F) are mostly based on quantizing channel coefficients to integers. In this work, we investigate the C\&F strategy over block fading channels using Construction A over rings, so as to allow better quantization for the channels. Advantages in decoding error probabilities and computation rates are demonstrated, and the construction is shown to outperform the C\&F strategy over the integers $\mathbb{Z}$.
