Massive scalar field perturbation on Kerr black holes in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity

We study massive scalar field perturbation on Kerr black holes in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity by performing a $(2+1)$-dimensional simulation. Object pictures of the wave dynamics in time domain are obtained. The tachyonic instability is found to always occur for any nonzero black hole spin and any scalar field mass as long as the coupling constant exceeds a critical value. The presence of the mass term suppresses or even quenches the instability. The quantitative dependence of the onset of the tachyonic instability on the coupling constant, the scalar field mass and the black hole spin is given numerically.

Object picture of scalar field perturbation on Kerr black hole in scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

Scalar perturbations around the Kerr black hole in scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (sEGB) theory are studied in the time domain. To overcome the "outer boundary problem" that usually encountered in traditional numerical calculations, we apply the hyperboloidal compactification technique to perform a $(2+1)$-dimensional simulation aiming to obtain a precise object picture of the wave propagation under the scalar field perturbation. We find that the big enough coupling constant between the scalar field and the Gauss-Bonnet curvature is responsible to destroy the original Kerr black hole. The breakdown of the Kerr spacetime happens earlier and the instability becomes more violent when the coupling becomes stronger. We further present object confirmations on the special case for the negative coupling where there exists a minimum rotation and below which the instability can never happen no matter how strong the coupling is. We also illustrate the fine structure property in the quasinormal ringing frequency once there is the coupling, and present the characteristic imprint of the sEGB theory. We expect that such a fine structure can be detected in the future gravitational wave observation to test the sEGB theory.

Superradiance and stability of the novel 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole

We investigated the superradiance and stability of the novel 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole which is recently inspired by Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)]. We found that the positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling consant $α$ enhances the superradiance, while the negative $α$ suppresses it. The condition for superradiant instability is proved. We also worked out the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole and found that the real part of all the QNMs live beyond the superradiance condition and the imaginary parts are all negative. Therefore this black hole is superradiant stable. When $α$ makes the black hole extremal, there are normal modes.

Microscopic explanation for black hole phase transitions via Ruppeiner geometry: two competing factors-the temperature and repulsive interaction among BH molecules

Charged dilatonic black hole (BH) has rather rich phase diagrams which may contain zeroth-order, first-order as well as reentrant phase transitions (RPTs) depending on the value of the coupling constant $α$ between the electromagnetic field and the dilaton. We try to give a microscopic explanation for these phase transitions by adopting Ruppeiner's approach. By studying the behaviors of the Ruppeiner invariant $R$ along the co-existing lines, we find that the various phase transitions may be qualitatively well explained as a result of two competing factors: the first one is the low-temperature effect which tends to shrink the BH and the second one is the repulsive interaction between the BH molecules which, on the contrary, tends to expand the BH. In the standard phase transition without RPT, as temperature is lowered, the first kind of factor dominates over the second one, so that large black hole (LBH) tends to shrink and thus transits to small black hole (SBH); While in the RPT, after the LBH-SBH transition, as temperature is further decreased, the strength of the second factor increases quickly and finally becomes strong enough to dominate over the first factor, so that SBH tends to expand to release the high repulsion and thus transits back to LBH. Moreover, by comparing the behavior of $R$ versus the temperature $T$ with fixed pressure to that of ordinary two-dimensional thermodynamical systems but with fixed specific volume, it is interesting to see that SBH behaves like a Fermionic gas system in cases with RPT, while it behaves oppositely to an anyon system in cases without RPT. And in all cases, LBH behaves like a nearly ideal gas system.

Subregion complexity in holographic thermalization with dS boundary

We study the time evolution of holographic subregion complexity (HSC) in Vaidya spacetime with dS boundary. The subregion on the boundary is chosen to be a sphere within the cosmological horizon. It is found that the behaviour of HSC is similar to that in cases with flat boundary. The whole evolution can be divided into four stages: First, it grows almost linearly, then the growth slows down; After reaching a maximum it drops down quickly and gets to saturation finally. The linear growth rate in the first stage is found to depend almost only on the the mass parameter. As the subregion size approaches the cosmological horizon, this stage is expected to last forever with the subsequent three stages washed out. The saturation time $\tilde{t}_{sat}$ depends almost only on the subregion size $\tilde{R}$ as $\tilde{t}_{sat} = \tanh^{-1} (\tilde{R})$ which is linear in $\tilde{R}$ when $\tilde{R}$ is small but logarithmically divergent as $\tilde{R}$ approaches the cosmological horizon.

Photon orbits and phase transitions in Born-Infeld-dilaton black holes

Relations between photon orbits and thermodynamical phase transitions are explored in Born-Infeld-dilaton-AdS black hole. The coupling between the electromagnetic field and the dialton field is chosen such that the full phase diagram contains zeroth-order and first-order phase transitions as well as RPT. We find that there exist non-monotonic beahviors of the photon orbit radius $r_{ps}$ and the minimum impact parameter $u_{ps}$ which signal the existence of the various phase transitions. In particular, the marginal value of pressure under which RPT occur can be read off from these behaviors. Along the co-existing lines, there are changes of both $r_{ps}$ and $u_{ps}$, whose dependence on the transition temperature show characteristic behaviors signalling the existence of RPT. Moreover, the critical exponents of $Δr_{ps}$ and $Δu_{ps}$ are found to take a universal value $\frac{1}{2}$. These results imply that $r_{ps}$ and $u_{ps}$ can be used as order parameters to describe BH phase transitions.

Chaos in Born-Infeld-AdS black hole within extended phase space

Born-Infeld-AdS black holes in extended phase space may possess phase structures resembling that of van der Waals fluid in four-dimensional spacetime. We study dynamics of its state, which is in the unstable spinodal region initially on phase space, under time-periodic thermal perturbations. By applying the Melnikov method, it is found that there exists a critical amplitude $γ_c$ of the perturbations, which depends on the Born-Infeld parameter $b$ and the black hole charge $Q$, such that chaos occurs for $γ> γ_c$. We found that larger $b$ or $Q$ makes the onset of chaos easier. Space-periodic thermal perturbations on its equilibrium state are also studied and there is always chaos for whatever the perturbation amplitude is.

Subregion complexity and confinement-deconfinement transition in a holographic QCD model

We study the subregion complexity in a semi-analytical holographic QCD model. Two cases with different warped factor are considered and both can realize confinement-deconfinement transition. By studying the behavior of the renormalized holographic complexity density $\hat{\cal C}$ versus the subregion length scale $\ell$, we find that for both cases, $\hat{\cal C}$ always experiences a discontinuity at certain critical value $\ell_c$ in confinement phases, while it is always continuous in deconfinement phases. This property may be seen as a signal to characterize confinement or deconfinement phases. The behavior of $\hat{\cal C}$ versus the temperature and chemical potential is also investigated and our results show that $\hat{\cal C}$ exhibits behavior characterizing the type of the transition. That is, it experiences a discontinuity at the transition temperature for $μ< μ_c$ where first-order confinement-deconfinement phase transition happens, while it is always continuous for $μ> μ_c$ where the transition turns into a turnover. These results imply that the renormalized holographic complexity density may be used as a good parameter to characterize the corresponding phase structures.

Holographic subregion complexity under a thermal quench

We study the evolution of holographic subregion complexity under a thermal quench in this paper. From the subregion CV proposal in the AdS/CFT correspondence, the subregion complexity in the CFT is holographically captured by the volume of the codimension-one surface enclosed by the codimension-two extremal entanglement surface and the boundary subregion. Under a thermal quench, the dual gravitational configuration is described by a Vaidya-AdS spacetime. In this case we find that the holographic subregion complexity always increases at early time, and after reaching a maximum it decreases and gets to saturation. Moreover we notice that when the size of the strip is large enough and the quench is fast enough, in $AdS_{d+1}(d\geq3)$ spacetime the evolution of the complexity is discontinuous and there is a sudden drop due to the transition of the extremal entanglement surface. We discuss the effects of the quench speed, the strip size, the black hole mass and the spacetime dimension on the evolution of the subregion complexity in detail numerically.

Smarr Integral Formula of D-dimensional Stationary Spacetimes in Einstein-Æther-Maxwell Theroy

Using the Wald formalism, we investigate the thermodynamics of charged black holes in D-dimensional stationary spacetimes with or without rotations in Einstein-æther-Maxwell theory. In particular, assuming the existence of a scaling symmetry of the action, we obtain the Smarr integral formula, which can be applied to both Killing and universal horizons. When restricted to 4-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetimes, previous results obtained by a different method are re-derived.

Complexity and phase transitions in a holographic QCD model

Applying the "Complexity=Action" conjecture, we study the holographic complexity close to crossover/phase transition in a holographic QCD model proposed by Gubser et al. This model can realize three types of phase transition, crossover or first and second order, depending on the parameters of the dilaton potential. The re-scaled late-time growth rate of holographic complexity density for the three cases is calculated. Our results show that it experiences a fast drop/jump close to the critical point while approaching constants far beyond the critical temperature. Moreover, close to the critical temperature, it shows a behavior characterizing the type of the transition. These features suggest that the growth rate of the holographic complexity may be used as a good parameter to characterize the phase transition. The Lloyd's bound is always satisfied for the cases we considered but only saturated for the conformal case.

Holographic entanglement entropy close to crossover/phase transition in strongly coupled systems

We investigate the behavior of entanglement entropy in the holographic QCD model proposed by Gubser et al. By choosing suitable parameters of the scalar self-interaction potential, this model can exhibit various types of phase structures: crossover, first order and second order phase transitions. We use entanglement entropy to probe the crossover/phase transition, and find that it drops quickly/suddenly when the temperature approaches the critical point which can be seen as a signal of confinement. Moreover, the critical behavior of the entanglement entropy suggests that we may use it to characterize the corresponding phase structures.

Holographic Schwinger effect in a confining background with Gauss-Bonnet corrections

We study the effect of higher-derivative terms on holographic Schwinger effect by introducing the Gauss-Bonnet term in the gravity sector. Anti-de Sitter (AdS) soliton background is considered which is dual to confining phase of the boundary field theory. By calculating the potential between the produced pair, we find that larger Gauss-Bonnet factor $λ$ makes the pair lighter. We apply numerical method to calculate the production rate for various cases. The results show that the Gauss-Bonnet term enhances the production rate. The critical behaviors near the two critical values of the electric field are also investigated, and it is found that the two critical indexes are not affected by the Gauss-Bonnet term and thus suggests a possible universality.

Charged scalar gravitational collapse in de Sitter spacetime

We study the charged scalar collapse in de Sitter spacetimes. With the electric charge, there is one more competitor to join the competition of dynamics in the gravitational collapse. We find that two factors can influence the electric charge. If we just adjust the charge conjugation, the electric charge effect is always perturbative at the black hole threshold. The electric charge can also be influenced by the initial conditions of perturbations. These initial parameters can be tuned to control the competition in dynamics and present us new and rich physics in the process of gravitational collapse. We give physical explanations on these phenomena found in dynamics. Furthermore we show that the properties of the gravitational collapse are universal and do not depend on spacetime dimensions.

Holographic superconductor in hyperscaling violation geometry with Maxwell-dilaton coupling

We re-investigate the holographic superconductor in hyperscaling violation geometry by considering the coupling between the probed Maxwell field and the background dilaton. We find that the phenomenon of superconductivity still exists, but with properties affected by such a coupling. The critical temperature decreases as the hyperscaling violation exponent is increased. The influence of the dynamical exponent on the critical temperature becomes complicated which depends on the mass of the probed scalar field and the hyperscaling violation exponent. The results of the frequency gap show a large deviation from the expected universal relation.

Revisiting holographic superconductors with hyperscaling violation

We investigate the effect of the hyperscaling violation on the holographic superconductors. In the s-wave model, we find that the critical temperature decreases first and then increases as the hyperscaling violation increases, and the mass of the scalar field will not modify the value of the hyperscaling violation which gives the minimum critical temperature. We analytically confirm the numerical results by using the Sturm-Liouville method with the higher order trial function and improve the previous findings in J. High Energy Phys. {\bf 09}, 048 (2013). However, different from the s-wave case, we note that the critical temperature decreases with the increase of the hyperscaling violation in the p-wave model. In addition, we observe that the hyperscaling violation affects the conductivity of the holographic superconductors and changes the expected relation in the gap frequency in both s-wave and p-wave models.

Maximally localized states and quantum corrections of black hole thermodynamics in the framework of a new generalized uncertainty principle

As a generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) leads to the effects of the minimal length of the order of the Planck scale and UV/IR mixing, some significant physical concepts and quantities are modified or corrected correspondingly. On the one hand, we derive the maximally localized states --- the physical states displaying the minimal length uncertainty associated with a new GUP proposed in our previous work. On the other hand, in the framework of this new GUP we calculate quantum corrections to the thermodynamic quantities of the Schwardzschild black hole, such as the Hawking temperature, the entropy, and the heat capacity, and give a remnant mass of the black hole at the end of the evaporation process. Moreover, we compare our results with that obtained in the frameworks of several other GUPs. In particular, we observe a significant difference between the situations with and without the consideration of the UV/IR mixing effect in the quantum corrections to the evaporation rate and the decay time. That is, the decay time can greatly be prolonged in the former case, which implies that the quantum correction from the UV/IR mixing effect may give rise to a radical rather than a tiny influence to the Hawking radiation.

Holographic thermalization in Gauss-Bonnet gravity with de Sitter boundary

We introduce higher-derivative Gauss-Bonnet correction terms in the gravity sector and we relate the modified gravity theory in the bulk to the strongly coupled quantum field theory on a de Sitter boundary. We study the process of holographic thermalization by examining three nonlocal observables, the two-point function, the Wilson loop and the holographic entanglement entropy. We study the time evolution of these three observables and we find that as the strength of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling is increased, the saturation time of the thermalization process to reach thermal equilibrium becomes shorter with the dominant effect given by the holographic entanglement entropy.
