Linear Growth of Circuit Complexity from Brownian Dynamics

We calculate the frame potential for Brownian clusters of $N$ spins or fermions with time-dependent all-to-all interactions. In both cases the problem can be mapped to an effective statistical mechanics problem which we study using a path integral approach. We argue that the $k$th frame potential comes within $ε$ of the Haar value after a time of order $t \sim k N + k \log k + \log ε^{-1}$. Using a bound on the diamond norm, this implies that such circuits are capable of coming very close to a unitary $k$-design after a time of order $t \sim k N$. We also consider the same question for systems with a time-independent Hamiltonian and argue that a small amount of time-dependent randomness is sufficient to generate a $k$-design in linear time provided the underlying Hamiltonian is quantum chaotic. These models provide explicit examples of linear complexity growth that are also analytically tractable.

Emergent space-time supersymmetry at disorder quantum critical point

We study the effect of disorder on the spacetime supersymmetry that is proposed to emerge at the quantum critical point of pair density wave transition in (2+1)D Dirac semimetals and (3+1)D Weyl semimetals. In the (2+1)D Dirac semimetal, we consider three types of disorder, including random scalar potential, random vector potential and random mass potential, while the random mass disorder is absent in the (3+1)D Weyl semimetal. Via a systematic renormalization group analysis, we find that any type of weak random disorder is irrelevant due to the couplings between the disorder potential and the Yukawa vertex. The emergent supersymmetry is thus stable for weak random potentials. Our work will pave the way for exploration supersymmetry in realistic condensed matter systems.

Universal Entanglement Transitions of Free Fermions with Long-range Non-unitary Dynamics

Non-unitary evolution can give rise to novel steady states classified by their entanglement properties. In this work, we aim to understand its interplay with long-range hopping that decays with $r^{-α}$ in free-fermion systems. We first study two solvable Brownian models with long-range non-unitary dynamics: a large-$N$ SYK$_2$ chain and a single-flavor fermion chain and we show that they share the same phase diagram. When $α>0.5$, we observe two critical phases with subvolume entanglement scaling: (i) $α>1.5$, a logarithmic phase with dynamical exponent $z=1$ and logarithmic subsystem entanglement, and (ii) $0.5<α<1.5$, a fractal phase with $z=\frac{2α-1}{2}$ and subsystem entanglement $S_A\propto L_A^{1-z}$, where $L_A$ is the length of the subsystem $A$. These two phases cannot be distinguished by the purification dynamics, in which the entropy always decays as $L/T$. We then confirm that the results are also valid for the static SYK$_2$ chain, indicating the phase diagram is universal for general free-fermion systems. We also discuss phase diagrams in higher dimensions and the implication in measurement-induced phase transitions.

Charge-$4e$ superconductivity from nematic superconductors in 2D and 3D

Charge-$4e$ superconductivity as a novel phase of matter remains elusive so far. Here we show that charge-$4e$ phase can arise as a vestigial order above the nematic superconducting transition temperature in time-reversal-invariant nematic superconductors. On the one hand, the nontrivial topological defect -- nematic vortex -- is energetically favored over the superconducting phase vortex when the nematic stiffness is less than the superfluid stiffness; consequently the charge-$4e$ phase emerges by proliferation of nematic vortices upon increasing temperatures. On the other hand, the Ginzburg-Landau theory of the nematic superconductors has two distinct decoupling channels to either charge-$4e$ orders or nematic orders; by analyzing the competition between the effective mass of the charge-$4e$ order and the cubic potential of the nematic order, we find a sizable regime where the charge-$4e$ order is favored. These two analysis consistently show that nematic superconductors can provide a promising route to realize charge-$4e$ phases, which may apply to candidate nematic superconductors such as PbTaSe$_2$ and twisted bilayer graphene.

Emergent Replica Conformal Symmetry in Non-Hermitian SYK$_2$ Chains

Recently, the steady states of non-unitary free fermion dynamics are found to exhibit novel critical phases with power-law squared correlations and a logarithmic subsystem entanglement. In this work, we theoretically understand the underlying physics by constructing solvable static/Brownian quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev chains with non-Hermitian dynamics. We find the action of the replicated system generally shows (one or infinite copies of) ${O(2)\times O(2)}$ symmetries, which is broken to ${O(2)}$ by the saddle-point solution. This leads to an emergent conformal field theory of the Goldstone modes. We derive the effective action and obtain the universal critical behaviors of squared correlators. Furthermore, the entanglement entropy of a subsystem ${A}$ with length ${L_A}$ corresponds to the energy of the half-vortex pair ${S\sim ρ_s \log L_A}$, where ${ρ_s}$ is the total stiffness of the Goldstone modes. We also discuss special limits with more than one branch of Goldstone modes and comment on interaction effects.

Yang-Lee edge singularity triggered entanglement transition

We show that a class of $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonians realizing the Yang-Lee edge singularity exhibits an entanglement transition in the long-time steady state evolved under the Hamiltonian. Such a transition is induced by a level crossing triggered by the critical point associated with the Yang-Lee singularity and hence is first-order in nature. At the transition, the entanglement entropy of the steady state jumps discontinuously from a volume-law to an area-law scaling. We exemplify this mechanism using a one-dimensional transverse field Ising model with additional imaginary fields, as well as the spin-1 Blume-Capel model and the three-state Potts model. We further make a connection to the forced-measurement induced entanglement transition in a Floquet non-unitary circuit subject to continuous measurements followed by post-selections. Our results demonstrate a new mechanism for entanglement transitions in non-Hermitian systems harboring a critical point.

SYK meets non-Hermiticity II: measurement-induced phase transition

We construct Brownian Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) chains subjected to continuous monitoring and explore possible entanglement phase transitions therein. We analytically derive the effective action in the large-$N$ limit and show that an entanglement transition is caused by the symmetry breaking in the enlarged replica space. In the noninteracting case with SYK$_2$ chains, the model features a continuous $O(2)$ symmetry between two replicas and a transition corresponding to spontaneous breaking of that symmetry upon varying the measurement rate. In the symmetry broken phase at low measurement rate, the emergent replica criticality associated with the Goldstone mode leads to a log-scaling entanglement entropy that can be attributed to the free energy of vortices. In the symmetric phase at higher measurement rate, the entanglement entropy obeys area-law scaling. In the interacting case, the continuous $O(2)$ symmetry is explicitly lowered to a discrete $C_4$ symmetry, giving rise to volume-law entanglement entropy in the symmetry-broken phase due to the enhanced linear free energy cost of domain walls compared to vortices. The interacting transition is described by $C_4$ symmetry breaking. We also verify the large-$N$ critical exponents by numerically solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation.

Phase transition in von Neumann entanglement entropy from replica symmetry breaking

We study the entanglement transition in monitored Brownian SYK chains in the large-$N$ limit. Without measurement the steady state $n$-th Rényi entropy is obtained by summing over a class of solutions, and is found to saturate to the Page value in the $n\rightarrow 1$ limit. In the presence of measurements, the analytical continuation $n\rightarrow 1$ is performed using the cyclic symmetric solution. The result shows that as the monitoring rate increases, a continuous von Neumann entanglement entropy transition from volume-law to area-law occurs at the point of replica symmetry unbreaking.

Chaos-protected locality

Microscopic speed limits that constrain the motion of matter, energy, and information abound in physics, from the "ultimate" speed limit set by light to Lieb-Robinson speed limits in quantum spin systems. In addition to these state-independent speed limits, systems can also be governed by emergent state-dependent speed limits indicating slow dynamics arising, for example, from slow low-energy quasiparticles. Here we describe a different kind of speed limit: a situation where complex information/entanglement spreads rapidly, in a fashion inconsistent with any speed limit, but where simple signals continue to obey an approximate speed limit. If we take the point of view that the motion of simple signals defines the local spacetime geometry of the universe, then the effects we describe show that spacetime locality can be compatible with a high degree of non-local interactions provided these are sufficiently chaotic. With this perspective, we sharpen a puzzle about black holes recently raised by Shor and propose a schematic resolution.

Quantum error as an emergent magnetic field

We investigate the effect of quantum errors on a monitored Brownian Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model featuring a measurement-induced phase transition that can be understood as a symmetry-breaking transition of an effective $Z_4$ magnet in the replica space. The errors describe the loss of information about the measurement outcomes and are applied during the non-unitary evolution or at the end of the evolution. In the former case, we find that this error can be mapped to an emergent magnetic field in the $Z_4$ magnet, and as a consequence, the symmetry is explicitly broken independent of the measurement rate. Rényi entropies computed by twisting boundary conditions now generate domain walls even in the would-be symmetric phase at a high measurement rate. The entropy is therefore volume-law irrespective of the measurement rate. In the latter case, the error-induced magnetic field only exists near the boundary of the magnet. Varying the magnetic field leads to a pinning transition of domain walls, corresponding to error threshold of the quantum code prepared by the non-unitary SYK dynamics.

Three-dimensional time reversal invariant topological superconductivity in doped chiral topological semimetals

Chiral topological semimetals host multifold degenerate band crossing points under the protection of crystalline symmetries. In this paper, we suggest that the recently discovered chiral topological semimetals in space group 198, parts of which are superconducting upon doping, can be new candidates of time reversal invariant topological superconductors. By investigating the Fermi surfaces around the band crossing points that carry nonzero Chern numbers, we clarify how the nontrivial topology of chiral topological semimetals affects their superconducting state and show the existence of topological superconductivity in $s_\pm$-wave pairing with surface Majorana fermions. We further demonstrate that the topological superconductivity is favored by the inter-unit-cell phonon-mediated electron-electron interaction.

Chiral topological superconductivity in Josephson junction

We consider a heterostructure of semiconductor layers sandwiched between two superconductors, forming a two-dimensional Josephson junction. Applying a Zeeman field perpendicular to the junction can render a topological superconducting phase with chiral Majorana edge mode. We show that the phase difference between two superconductors can efficiently reduce the magnetic field required to achieve the chiral topological superconductivity, providing an experimentally feasible setup to realize chiral Majorana edge modes. We also construct a lattice Hamiltonian of the setup to demonstrate the chiral Majorana edge mode and the Majorana bound state localized in vortices.

Hydrodynamic sound and plasmons in three dimensions

In a recent paper by Lucas and Das Sarma [Physical Review B 97, 115449 (2018)], a solvable model of collective modes in 2D metals was considered in the hydrodynamic regime. In the current work, we generalize the hydrodynamic theory to 3D metals for which the calculation of sound modes in a strongly-coupled quantum Coulomb plasma can be made explicit. The specific theoretical question of interest is how the usual linearly dispersing hydrodynamic sound mode relates to the well-known gapped 3D plasmon collective mode in the presence of long-range Coulomb interaction. We show analytically that both the zero sound in the collisionless regime and the first sound in the hydrodynamic region become massive in 3D, acquiring a finite gap because of the long-range Coulomb interaction, while their damping rates become quadratic in momentum. We also discuss other types of long-range potential, where the dispersion of sound modes is modified accordingly. The general result is that the leading order hydrodynamic sound mode is always given by the leading-order plasmon frequency in the presence of long-range Coulomb interaction, but the next-to-leading-order dispersion corrections differ in hydrodynamic and colllisionless regimes.

Note on entropy dynamics in the Brownian SYK model

We study the time evolution of Rényi entropy in a system of two coupled Brownian SYK clusters evolving from an initial product state. The Rényi entropy of one cluster grows linearly and then saturates to the coarse grained entropy. This Page curve is obtained by two different methods, a path integral saddle point analysis and an operator dynamics analysis. Using the Brownian character of the dynamics, we derive a master equation which controls the operator dynamics and gives the Page curve for purity. Insight into the physics of this complicated master equation is provided by a complementary path integral method: replica diagonal and non-diagonal saddles are responsible for the linear growth and saturation of Rényi entropy, respectively.

Complexity growth of operators in the SYK model and in JT gravity

The concepts of operator size and computational complexity play important roles in the study of quantum chaos and holographic duality because they help characterize the structure of time-evolving Heisenberg operators. It is particularly important to understand how these microscopically defined measures of complexity are related to notions of complexity defined in terms of a dual holographic geometry, such as complexity-volume (CV) duality. Here we study partially entangled thermal states in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and their dual description in terms of operators inserted in the interior of a black hole in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity. We compare a microscopic definition of complexity in the SYK model known as K-complexity to calculations using CV duality in JT gravity and find that both quantities show an exponential-to-linear growth behavior. We also calculate the growth of operator size under time evolution and find connections between size and complexity. While the notion of operator size saturates at the scrambling time, our study suggests that complexity, which is well defined in both quantum systems and gravity theories, can serve as a useful measure of operator evolution at both early and late times.

Nonequilibrium dynamics in deconfined quantum critical point revealed by imaginary-time evolution

As proposed to describe putative continuous phase transitions between two ordered phases, the deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) goes beyond the prevalent Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson (LGW) paradigm since its critical theory is not expressed in terms of the order parameters characterizing either state, but involves fractionalized degrees of freedom and an emergent symmetry. So far, great efforts have been spent on its equilibrium properties, but the nonequilibrium properties therein are largely unknown. Here we study the nonequilibrium dynamics of the DQCP via the imaginary-time evolution in the two-dimensional (2D) J-Q$_3$ model. We discover fascinating nonequilibrium scaling behaviors hinging on the process of fractionization and the dynamics of emergent symmetry associated with two length scales. Our findings not only constitute a new realm of nonequilibrium criticality in DQCP, but also offer a controllable knob by which to investigate the dynamics in strongly correlated systems.

${\bf 2k_F}$ Density Wave Instability of Composite Fermi Liquid

We investigate the $2k_F$ density-wave instability of non-Fermi liquid states by combining exact diagonalization with renormalization group analysis. At the half-filled zeroth Landau level, we study the fate of the composite Fermi liquid in the presence of the mass anisotropy and mixed Landau level form factors. These two experimentally accessible knobs trigger a phase transition towards a unidirectional charge-density-wave state with a wavevector equal to $2k_F$ of the composite Fermi liquid. Based on exact diagonalization, we identify such a transition by examining both the energy spectra and the static structure factor of charge density-density correlations. Moreover, the renormalization group analysis reveals that gauge fluctuations render the non-Fermi liquid state unstable against density-wave orders, consistent with numerical observations. Possible experimental probes of the density-wave instability are also discussed.

An exponential ramp in the quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

A long period of linear growth in the spectral form factor provides a universal diagnostic of quantum chaos at intermediate times. By contrast, the behavior of the spectral form factor in disordered integrable many-body models is not well understood. Here we study the two-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model and show that the spectral form factor features an exponential ramp, in sharp contrast to the linear ramp in chaotic models. We find a novel mechanism for this exponential ramp in terms of a high-dimensional manifold of saddle points in the path integral formulation of the spectral form factor. This manifold arises because the theory enjoys a large symmetry group. With finite nonintegrable interaction strength, these delicate symmetries reduce to a relative time translation, causing the exponential ramp to give way to a linear ramp.
