Topology of light rings for extremal and non-extremal Kerr-Newman Taub-NUT black holes without $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry

Understanding the light ring, one kind fundamental orbit, shall provide us with novel insight into the astronomical phenomena, such as the ringdown of binary merger and shadow of black holes. Recently, topological approach has preliminarily demonstrated its potential advantages on the properties of the light rings. However, for the black holes without $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and extremal spinning black holes are remained to be tested. In this paper, we aim at these two issues. Due to the NUT charge, the Kerr-Newman Taub-NUT solution has no $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. By constructing the corresponding topology for the non-extremal spinning black holes, we find the topological number keeps unchanged. This indicates that $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry has no influence on the topological number, while it indeed affects the locations of the light rings and deviates them off the equatorial plane. For the extremal spinning black holes, we find its topology is critically dependent of the leading term of the vector's radial component at the zero point of its angular component on the black hole horizon. The findings state that there exists a topological phase transition, where the topological number changes, for the prograde light rings. While no phase transition occurs for the retrograde light rings. Our study uncovers some universal topological properties for the extremal and non-extremal spinning black holes with or without $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry. It also has enlightening significance on understanding the light rings in a more general black hole background.

Distinct topological configurations of equatorial timelike circular orbit for spherically symmetric (hairy) black holes

Topology is a promising approach toward to the light ring in a generic black hole background, and equatorial timelike circular orbit in a stationary black hole background. In this paper, we consider the distinct topological configurations of the timelike circular orbits in static, spherically symmetric, and asymptotic flat black holes. By making use of the equation of motion of the massive particles, we construct a vector with its zero points exactly relating with the timelike circular orbits. Since each zero point of the vector can be endowed with a winding number, the topology of the timelike circular orbits is well established. Stable and unstable timelike circular orbits respectively have winding number +1 and -1. In particular, for given angular momentum, the topological number of the timelike circular orbits also vanishes whether they are rotating or not. Moreover, we apply the study to the Schwarzschild, scalarized Einstein-Maxwell, and dyonic black holes, which have three distinct topological configurations, representations of the radius and angular momentum relationship, with one or two pairs timelike circular orbits at most. It is shown that although the existence of scalar hair and quasi-topological term leads to richer topological configurations of the timelike circular orbits, they have no influence on the total topological number. These results indicate that the topological approach indeed provides us a novel way to understand the timelike circular orbits. Significantly, different topological configurations can share the same topology number, and hence belong to the same topological class. More information is expected to be disclosed when other different topological configurations are present.

Extracting spinning wormhole energy via magnetic reconnection

Magnetic reconnection has been extensively shown to be a promising approach to extract spinning black hole energy. In this paper, we focus on extracting spinning wormhole energy via such mechanism. The study shows that it is indeed possible to extract rotating energy from a spinning wormhole with small regularization parameter $\ell$ of the central singularity. The efficiency and power of the energy extraction are also evaluated. Quite different from the Kerr black hole, the spin of the wormhole can take arbitrarily large value. However, the increasing of wormhole spin not always improves the efficiency and power of energy extraction. By further comparing with the Kerr black hole, we find the wormhole is more efficient when the magnetic reconnection happens within radial distance $r/M<1$. These studies reveal the features of extracting spinning wormhole energy, and more underlying properties are expected to be disclosed for the horizonless objects.

Extracting energy via magnetic reconnection from Kerr-de Sitter black holes

It has been recently shown that magnetic reconnection can provide us a novel mechanism to extract black hole rotational energy from a Kerr black holes. In this paper, we study the energy extraction from the Kerr-de Sitter black hole via this magnetic reconnection process. The result shows that, with the increase of the cosmological constant, a slowly spinning Kerr-de Sitter black hole can implement the energy extraction better than its Kerr counterpart. Interestingly, although the numerical results show that the maximum values of the power and efficiency slightly decrease with the cosmological constant, Kerr-de Sitter black hole still has significant advantages when the black hole spin is larger than 1 and the dominant reconnection $X$-point is far away from the event horizon. This is mainly attributed to the higher upper spin bound and wider ergosphere in the presence of the cosmological constant. These results uncover the significant effects of the cosmological constant on the energy extraction via the magnetic reconnection process.

Topology of equatorial timelike circular orbits around stationary black holes

A topological approach has been successfully used to study the properties of the light ring and the null circular orbit, in a generic black hole background. However, for the equatorial timelike circular orbit, quite different from the light ring case, its radius is closely dependent of the energy and angular momentum of a test particle. This fact seems to restrict the extension of the topological treatment to the timelike circular orbit. In this paper, we confirm that the angular momentum does not affect the asymptotic behavior of the constructed vector with its zero points denoting the equatorial timelike circular orbits. As a result, a well-behaved topology to characterize the equatorial timelike circular orbits can be constructed. Our study shows that the total topological number of the timelike circular orbits vanishes for a generic black hole, which is dependent of the energy of the particle. Significantly, it reveals that if there the timelike circular orbits exist, they always come in pairs for fixed angular momentum. Meanwhile, the stable and unstable timelike circular orbits have positive or negative winding number. Of particular interest is that the marginally stable circular orbit corresponds to the bifurcation point of the zero point of the constructed vector. Moreover, we also examine the case when the particle energy acts as the control parameter. It is shown that there will be topological phase transition when the value of the particle energy is one. Below this value, the timelike circular orbits always come in pairs for fixed energy. Otherwise, we will have one more unstable timelike circular orbit. We further apply the treatment to the Kerr black hole. All the results given in a generic black hole background are exactly reproduced. These strongly indicate that our topological approach can be generalized to the equatorial timelike circular orbits.

Black Hole Solutions as Topological Thermodynamic Defects

In this work, employing the generalized off-shell free energy, we treat black hole solutions as defects in the thermodynamic parameter space. The results show that the positive and negative winding numbers corresponding to the defects indicate the local thermodynamical stable and unstable black hole solutions, respectively. The topological number $W$ defined as the sum of the winding numbers for all the black hole branches at an arbitrary given temperature is found to be a universal number independent of the black hole parameters. Moreover, this topological number only depends on the thermodynamic asymptotic behaviors of the black hole temperature at small and large black hole limits. Different black hole systems are characterized by three classes via this topological number. This number could help us well understanding the black hole thermodynamics, and further shed new light on the fundamental nature of quantum gravity.

Splitting the Echoes of Black Holes in Einstein-nonlinear Electrodynamic Theories

Black hole echo is an important observable that can help us better understand gravitational theories. We present that the non-linear electrodynamic black holes can admit the multi-peak effective potential for the scalar perturbations, which can give rise to the echoes. After choosing suitable parameters, the effective potential can exhibit a structure with more than two peaks. Putting the initial wave packet released outside the peaks, we find that the time-domain profile of the echo will split when the peaks of the effective potential change from two to three. This is a phenomenon of black hole echo and it might be possible to determine the geometric structure of the black hole according to this phenomenon through gravitational wave detection.

Equatorial orbits of spinning test particle in rotating boson star

In this paper, we study the circular orbit of the spinning test particle in the background of a rotating boson star. Using the pole-dipole approximation and neglecting the back-reaction of the spinning test particle on the spacetime, the equation of motion of the spinning test particle is described by the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equation. We solve this equation under the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition and obtain the four-momentum and four-velocity of the spinning test particle. Quite different from the spinless particle, the effective potential of the spinning particle with zero orbital angular momentum goes to infinite at the center of the rotating boson star. This will lead to the fact that the spinning particle can not pass through the center of the boson star. However, when the spin angular momentum and orbital angular momentum satisfy $2\bar{s}+\bar{l}=0$, the effective potential is not divergent anymore and the spinning particle can pass through the center of the rotating boson star. {We still investigate how the spin affects the structure of the circular orbits and we find that the spin will induce the larger or smaller regions of no circular orbits, unstable circular orbits, and stable circular orbits.} Moreover, the radius and energy of the circular orbit will be decreased or increased by the particle spin. These results will have an important application in testing the gravitational waves in the boson star background.

Dynamics of scalar hair with self-interactions around a Schwarzchild black hole

In this paper, we study the dynamics of scalar hair around a Schwarzchild black hole. The scalar hair is sourced by the Gauss-Bonnet invariant with a linear coupling. We work perturbatively in the coupling constant and ignore the back-reaction of the scalar hair and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. We evolve the scalar field in the background of a Schwarzchild black hole and study the dynamical formation of scalar hair with different self-interactions. We integrate the energy and compute the energy flux of the scalar hair in terms of the canonical energy-momentum tensor and give the corresponding dependence on the self-interactions. Our results allow us to estimate the radiation and the condensation of scalar field with different self-interactions, these would improve our understanding for the dynamical scalarization of black holes and the possible configuration of the scalar hair in scalar Gauss-Bonnet gravity.

Comment on ''Traversable Wormholes in General Relativity''

In the letter titled ''Traversable Wormholes in General Relativity'' [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 091104 (2022)], R. A. Konoplya and A. Zhidenko have constructed an asymmetric wormhole solution, which is not symmetric about the throat and is compounded from smooth gravitational and charged Dirac fields. However, the authors have claimed that a physically relevant condition on the throat is imposed to lead to no gravitational force experienced by a stationary observer at the throat. In this comment, we point out that the above condition is unnecessary.

Shadow and weak deflection angle of a black hole in nonlocal gravity

Black hole shadow and gravitational lensing play important roles in testing gravitational theories in the strong field regime. As the first-order modifications from quantum gravity, the nonlocality can be manifested by black hole shadow and gravitational lensing. For example, the cut-off parameter introduced by nonlocality will affect the shape and size of the black hole shadow, and also affect the deflection angle of light rays. In this paper, we mainly investigate the effects of the nonlocality on the black hole shadow and the gravitational lensing for two types of rotating black holes in nonlocal gravity. It is found that the size of the black hole shadow decreases with the cut-off parameter since the nonlocality weakens the gravitational constant, and the shape of the shadow gets more deformed with the increase of the cut-off parameter. However, if the rotation parameter is small, the shape of the shadow is almost a circle even though the cut-off parameter approaches its maximum. The energy emission rate in both models is also studied. The results show that there is a peak for each curve and the peak decreases and shifts to the low frequency with the increase of the cut-off parameter. Besides, we also explore the shadow of both types of black holes surrounded by a nonmagnetized pressureless plasma which satisfies the separability condition. It is found that the plasma has a frequency-dependent dispersive effect on the size and shape of the black hole shadow. For the gravitational lensing, we find that the cut-off parameter of model A makes a positive contribution to the deflection angle, which can be compared with the contribution of the rotation parameter, while the cut-off parameter of model B makes a negative contribution which can be ignored. These results may be helpful for probing nonlocal gravity in future observations.

Optical appearance of Einstein-Æther black hole surrounded by thin disk

In Einstein-Æther theory, the Lorentz symmetry is locally broken in the high-energy regime due to the presence of theÆther field. This shall leave significant imprint on astronomical observation. In this paper, we investigate the optical appearance of two types of the static and spherically symmetric black holes in Einstein-Æther theory. Via Euler-Lagrange equation, we obtain the equations of motion of the photon and calculate the total deflection angle of the photon trajectory around the black hole. By classifying the light rays with the total number of orbits, we study the effects of coupling constants on the direct image, lensing ring, and photon ring. The features of the light trajectories are also investigated by comparing with the Einstein-Æther theory and general relativity. Moreover, we also show the explicit optical appearance of black holes surrounded by thin disk emissions with three characteristic emitted models. The results indicate that the direct image gives the main contribution to the total flux, and the lensing ring just gives a very small contribution, whereas the role of the photon ring is negligible. The optical appearances are also found to significantly rely on these coupling constants.

Triple points and novel phase transitions of dyonic AdS black holes with quasitopological electromagnetism

Quasitopological electromagnetism has an important influence on the strong gravity of dyonic black hole. For example three photon spheres with one being stable are found and we wish to test them with the observed black hole shadow. We are primarily concerned with the thermodynamics and phase transition for a dyonic anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole when the quasitopological electromagnetism is included.Unlike in a black hole solution without quasitopological electromagnetism, we observe a triple point phase structure by varying the coupling parameters. Of particular interest, for certain parameter values, two separate coexistence curves are present, which is an additional novel phase structure that is absent in a black hole solution without quasitopological electromagnetism. The critical exponents share the same values as mean field theory. These results uncover the intriguing properties of dyonic AdS black holes with quasitopological electromagnetism from a thermodynamic point of view.

Effects of tidal charge on magnetic reconnection and energy extraction from spinning braneworld black hole

Recent study shows that the magnetic reconnection can serve as an efficient mechanism to extract energy from rapidly spinning black holes. In this paper, we consider the effects of the tidal charge on the energy extraction via the magnetic reconnection in the backgrounds of a spinning braneworld black hole. With the increase of the tidal charge, we find that both the energies of the accelerated plasma and decelerated plasma decrease for the observer located at infinity. To achieve the purpose extracting the net energy from the black hole, the decelerated plasma should take negative energy. Then we observe that the power of the energy extraction via the magnetic reconnection grows with the tidal charge. Meanwhile, the efficiency also increases with the tidal charge indicating that the spinning braneworld black hole with positive tidal charge is more efficient than the Kerr black hole. Compared with the Blandford-Znajek mechanism, the magnetic reconnection process shall have a higher power for positive tidal charge. These results indicate that the tidal charge has a significant effect on the energy extraction via the magnetic reconnection process.

Topology of black hole thermodynamics

A critical point is an important structure in the phase diagram of a thermodynamic system. In this work, we introduce topology to the study of the black hole thermodynamics for the first time by following Duan's topological current $ϕ$-mapping theory. Each critical point is endowed with a topological charge. We find that critical points can be divided into two classes, the conventional and the novel. Further study shows that the first-order phase transition can extend from the conventional critical point, while the presence of the novel critical point cannot serve as an indicator of the presence of the first-order phase transition near it. Moreover, the charged anti-de Sitter black hole and the Born-Infeld anti-de Sitter black hole have different topological charges, which indicates they are in different topological classes from the viewpoint of thermodynamics. These give the first promising study on the topology of the black hole thermodynamics. Such approach is also expected to be extended to other black holes, and much more topological information remains to be disclosed.

Observing dynamic oscillatory behavior of triple points among black hole thermodynamic phase transitions

Understanding the dynamic process of black hole thermodynamic phase transitions at a triple point is a huge challenge. In this letter, we carry out the first investigation of dynamical phase behaviour at a black hole triple point. By numerically solving the Smoluchowski equation near the triple point for a six-dimensional charged Gauss-Bonnet anti-de Sitter black hole, we find that initial small, intermediate, or large black holes can transit to the other two coexistent phases at the triple point, indicating that thermodynamic phase transitions can indeed occur dynamically. More significantly, we observe characteristic weak and strong oscillatory behaviour in this dynamic process, which can be understood from an investigation of the rate of first passage from one phase to another. Our results further an understanding of the dynamic process of black hole thermodynamic phase transitions.

Dynamic properties of thermodynamic phase transition for five-dimensional neutral Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole on free energy landscape

Understanding the dynamic process of the thermodynamic phase transition can provide the deep insight into the black hole microscopic properties and structures. We in this paper study the dynamic properties of the stable small-large black hole phase transition for the five-dimensional neutral Gauss-Bonnet AdS black hole. Firstly, by using the first law of black holes, we prove that the extremal points of the free energy on the landscape denote the real black hole solutions satisfying the field equations. The local maximal and minimal points correspond to local unstable and stable black hole states, respectively. Especially, on the free energy landscape, the wells of the coexistence small and large black holes have the same depth. Then we investigate the probability evolution governed by the Fokker-Planck equation. Due to the thermal fluctuation, we find that the small (large) black hole state can transit to the large (small) black hole state. Furthermore, the first passage time is calculated. For each temperature, a single peak is presented, which suggests that there is a considerable fraction of the first passage events taking place at short time. And the higher the temperature is, the faster decrease of the probability is. These results will uncover some intriguing dynamic properties of the stable small-large black hole phase transition in modified gravity.

Dark Information in Black Hole with $λφ$ Fluid

It has been shown that the nonthermal spectrum of Hawking radiation will lead to information-carrying correlations between emitted particles in the radiation. The mutual information carried by such correlations can not be locally observed and hence is dark. With dark information, the black hole information is conserved. In this paper, we look for the spherically symmetric black hole solution in a $λφ$ fluid model and investigate the radiation spectrum and dark information of the black hole. The spacetime structure of this black hole is similar to that of the Schwarzschild one, while its horizon radius is decreased by the $λφ$ fluid. By using the statistical mechanical method, the nonthermal radiation spectrum is calculated. This radiation spectrum is very different from the Schwarzschild case at its last stage because of the effect of the $λφ$ fluid. The $λφ$ fluid reduces the lifetime of the black hole, but increases the dark information of the Hawking radiation.
