Integrated yoctosecond-precision timing detector

Precise timing detection is essential for exploring ultrafast phenomena in fields ranging from free-electron lasers to ultra-high-power laser facilities. However, achieving simultaneous high resolution and large dynamic range remains a fundamental challenge, and state of the art systems are often constrained by their physical size, power requirements, and limited scalability. Here we introduce an integrated dual electro optic sub cycle timing detector (DEST) that overcomes these limitations. In a proof of principle measurement, the device resolves timing jitter as small as 11 yoctoseconds (ys, $10^{-24}$ s) at 1 MHz--equivalent to the transit time of light across two protons--while maintaining an unambiguous measurement range of 6.15 ps and a dynamic range exceeding 155 dB. The core detection unit is miniaturized to chip scale dimensions of 18 mm x 2 mm x 1 mm on a thin film lithium niobate platform, ensuring inherent stability and immunity to environmental disturbances. Moreover, the architecture naturally lends itself to massive parallelization through array integration, with the potential to push timing precision to the sub 10 rontosecond (rs, $10^{-27}$ s) level within a 1 $m^2$ footprint. This combination of extreme sensitivity, wide dynamic range, compact size, and scalability opens new avenues for detecting previously inaccessible weak signals, including those from gravitational waves, quantum vacuum fluctuations, and beyond.

Vidi2.5: Large Multimodal Models for Video Understanding and Creation

Video has emerged as the primary medium for communication and creativity on the Internet, driving strong demand for scalable, high-quality video production. Vidi models continue to evolve toward next-generation video creation and have achieved state-of-the-art performance in multimodal temporal retrieval (TR). In its second release, Vidi2 advances video understanding with fine-grained spatio-temporal grounding (STG) and extends its capability to video question answering (Video QA), enabling comprehensive multimodal reasoning. Given a text query, Vidi2 can identify not only the corresponding timestamps but also the bounding boxes of target objects within the output time ranges. To enable comprehensive evaluation of STG, we introduce a new benchmark, VUE-STG, which offers critical improvements over existing STG datasets. In addition, we upgrade the previous VUE-TR benchmark to VUE-TR-V2, achieving a more balanced duration and query distribution. Remarkably, the Vidi2 model substantially outperforms leading proprietary systems, such as Gemini 3 Pro Preview and GPT-5, on both VUE-TR-V2 and VUE-STG, while achieving competitive results with popular open-source models with similar scale on video QA benchmarks. The latest Vidi2.5 offers significantly stronger STG capability and slightly better TR and Video QA performance over Vidi2. This update also introduces a Vidi2.5-Think model to handle plot understanding with complex plot reasoning. To comprehensively evaluate the performance of plot understanding, we propose VUE-PLOT benchmark with two tracks, Character and Reasoning. Notably, Vidi2.5-Think outperforms Gemini 3 Pro Preview on fine-grained character understanding with comparable performance on complex plot reasoning. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effectiveness of Vidi2.5 on a challenging real-world application, video editing planning.

Transient analysis of arm locking controller

Arm locking is one of the key technologies to suppress the laser phase noise in spaced-based gravitational waves observatories. Since arm locking was proposed, phase margin criterion was always used as the fundamental design strategy for the controller development. In this paper, we find that this empirical method from engineering actually cannot guarantee the arm locking stability. Therefore, most of the advanced arm locking controllers reported so far may have instable problems. After comprehensive analysis of the single arm locking's transient responses, strict analytical stability criterions are summarized for the first time. These criterions are then generalized to dual arm locking, modified-dual arm locking and common arm locking, and special considerations for the design of arm locking controllers in different architectures are also discussed. It is found that PI controllers can easily meet our stability criterions in most of the arm locking systems. Using a simple high gain PI controller, it is possible to suppress the laser phase noise by 5 orders of magnitude within the science band. Our stability criterions can also be used in other feedback systems, where several modules with different delays are connected in parallel.

Transition from multiphoton to tunneling ionization in the process of high harmonic generation in solids

High harmonic generation in solids is becoming an important method for strong field solid state physics research. The power scale relationship between high harmonics and the driving laser is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Results of the power scale dependence clearly divided the interaction into two regimes. The modification of the bandgap by intense laser proved to be very important for theoretically reproducing the experimental result. Combining with the Keldysh theory analysis, the harmonic generation process is found to be transitioned from multiphoton excitations to the diabatic tunneling.

STRIVE: Scene Text Replacement In Videos

We propose replacing scene text in videos using deep style transfer and learned photometric transformations.Building on recent progress on still image text replacement,we present extensions that alter text while preserving the appearance and motion characteristics of the original video.Compared to the problem of still image text replacement, our method addresses additional challenges introduced by video, namely effects induced by changing lighting, motion blur, diverse variations in camera-object pose over time, and preservation of temporal consistency. We parse the problem into three steps. First, the text in all frames is normalized to a frontal pose using a spatio-temporal trans-former network. Second, the text is replaced in a single reference frame using a state-of-art still-image text replacement method. Finally, the new text is transferred from the reference to remaining frames using a novel learned image transformation network that captures lighting and blur effects in a temporally consistent manner. Results on synthetic and challenging real videos show realistic text trans-fer, competitive quantitative and qualitative performance, and superior inference speed relative to alternatives. We introduce new synthetic and real-world datasets with paired text objects. To the best of our knowledge this is the first attempt at deep video text replacement.

Towards Learning Food Portion From Monocular Images With Cross-Domain Feature Adaptation

We aim to estimate food portion size, a property that is strongly related to the presence of food object in 3D space, from single monocular images under real life setting. Specifically, we are interested in end-to-end estimation of food portion size, which has great potential in the field of personal health management. Unlike image segmentation or object recognition where annotation can be obtained through large scale crowd sourcing, it is much more challenging to collect datasets for portion size estimation since human cannot accurately estimate the size of an object in an arbitrary 2D image without expert knowledge. To address such challenge, we introduce a real life food image dataset collected from a nutrition study where the groundtruth food energy (calorie) is provided by registered dietitians, and will be made available to the research community. We propose a deep regression process for portion size estimation by combining features estimated from both RGB and learned energy distribution domains. Our estimates of food energy achieved state-of-the-art with a MAPE of 11.47%, significantly outperforms non-expert human estimates by 27.56%.

Enhanced optical Kerr nonlinearity of graphene/Si hybrid waveguide

In this work, we experimentally study the optical kerr nonlinearities of graphene/Si hybrid waveguides with enhanced self-phase modulation. In the case of CMOS compatible materials for nonlinear optical signal processing, Si and silicon nitride waveguides have been extensively investigated over the past decade. However, Si waveguides exhibit strong two-photon absorption (TPA) at telecommunication wavelengths, which lead to a significant reduction of nonlinear figure of merit. In contrast, silicon nitride based material system usually suppress the TPA, but simultaneously leads to the reduction of the Kerr nonlinearity by two orders of magnitude. Here, we introduce a graphene/Si hybrid waveguide, which remain the optical properties and CMOS compatibility of Si waveguides, while enhance the Kerr nonlinearity by transferring patterned graphene over the top of the waveguides. The graphene/Si waveguides are measured with a nonlinear parameter of 510 W-1m-1. Enhanced nonlinear figure-of-merit (FOM) of 2.48 has been achieved, which is three times higher than that of the Si waveguide. This work reveals the potential application of graphene/Si hybrid photonic waveguides with high Kerr nonlinearity and FOM for nonlinear all-optical signal processing.

Single-View Food Portion Estimation: Learning Image-to-Energy Mappings Using Generative Adversarial Networks

Due to the growing concern of chronic diseases and other health problems related to diet, there is a need to develop accurate methods to estimate an individual's food and energy intake. Measuring accurate dietary intake is an open research problem. In particular, accurate food portion estimation is challenging since the process of food preparation and consumption impose large variations on food shapes and appearances. In this paper, we present a food portion estimation method to estimate food energy (kilocalories) from food images using Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). We introduce the concept of an "energy distribution" for each food image. To train the GAN, we design a food image dataset based on ground truth food labels and segmentation masks for each food image as well as energy information associated with the food image. Our goal is to learn the mapping of the food image to the food energy. We can then estimate food energy based on the energy distribution. We show that an average energy estimation error rate of 10.89% can be obtained by learning the image-to-energy mapping.
