Multi-Antenna Aided Secrecy Beamforming Optimization for Wirelessly Powered HetNets

The new paradigm of wirelessly powered two-tier heterogeneous networks (HetNets) is considered in this paper. Specifically, the femtocell base station (FBS) is powered by a power beacon (PB) and transmits confidential information to a legitimate femtocell user (FU) in the presence of a potential eavesdropper (EVE) and a macro base station (MBS). In this scenario, we investigate the secrecy beamforming design under three different levels of FBS-EVE channel state information (CSI), namely, the perfect, imperfect and completely unknown FBS-EVE CSI. Firstly, given the perfect global CSI at the FBS, the PB energy covariance matrix, the FBS information covariance matrix and the time splitting factor are jointly optimized aiming for perfect secrecy rate maximization. Upon assuming the imperfect FBS-EVE CSI, the worst-case and outage-constrained SRM problems corresponding to deterministic and statistical CSI errors are investigated, respectively. Furthermore, considering the more realistic case of unknown FBS-EVE CSI, the artificial noise (AN) aided secrecy beamforming design is studied. Our analysis reveals that for all the above cases both the optimal PB energy and FBS information secrecy beamformings are of rank-1. Moreover, for all considered cases of FBS-EVE CSI, the closed-form PB energy beamforming solutions are available when the cross-tier interference constraint is inactive. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the secrecy performance advantages of all proposed secrecy beamforming designs compared to the adopted baseline algorithms.

Effective Capacity for Renewal Service Processes with Applications to HARQ Systems

Considering the widespread use of effective capacity in cross-layer design and the extensive existence of renewal service processes in communication networks, this paper thoroughly investigates the effective capacity for renewal processes. Based on Z-transform, we derive exact analytical expressions for the effective capacity at a given quality of service (QoS) exponent for both the renewal processes with constant reward and with variable rewards. Unlike prior literature that the effective capacity is approximated with no many insightful discussions, our expression is simple and reveals further meaningful results, such as the monotonicity and bounds of effective capacity. The analytical results are then applied to evaluate the cross-layer throughput for diverse hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) systems, including fixed-rate HARQ (FR-HARQ, e.g., Type I HARQ, HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC) and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR)), variable-rate HARQ (VR-HARQ) and cross-packet HARQ (XP-HARQ). Numerical results corroborate the analytical ones and prove the superiority of our proposed approach. Furthermore, targeting at maximizing the effective capacity via the optimal rate selection, it is revealed that VR-HARQ and XP-HARQ attain almost the same performance, and both of them perform better than FR-HARQ.

Optimal Beamforming and Time Allocation for Partially Wireless Powered Sensor Networks with Downlink SWIPT

Wireless powered sensor networks (WPSNs) have emerged as a key development towards the future self-sustainable Internet of Things (IoT) networks. To achieve a good balance between self-sustainability and reliability, partially WPSNs with a mixed power solution are desirable for practical applications. Specifically, most of the sensor nodes are wireless powered but the key sensor node adopts traditional wire/battery power for reliability. As a result, this paper mainly investigates optimal design for the partially WPSNs in which simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is adopted in the downlink. Two scenarios with space division multiple access (SDMA) and time division multiple access (TDMA) in the uplink are considered. For both the SDMA-enabled and TDMA-enabled partially WPSNs, joint design of downlink beamforming, uplink beamforming and time allocation is investigated to maximize the uplink sum rate while guaranteeing the quality-of-service (i.e., satisfying the downlink rate constraint) at the key sensor node. After analyzing the feasibility of uplink sum rate maximization problems and the influence of the downlink rate constraint, semi-closed-form optimal solutions for both SDMA-enabled and TDMA-enabled WPSNs are proposed with guaranteed global optimality. Complexity analysis is also provided to justify the advantage of the proposed solutions in low complexity. The effectiveness and optimality of the proposed optimal solutions are finally demonstrated by simulations.

Distributed Frequency Offsets Estimation

In this paper, we provide a distributed frequency offset estimation algorithm based on a variant of belief propagation (BP). Each agent in the network pre-compensates its carrier frequency individually so that there is no frequency offset from the desired carrier frequency between each pair of transceiver. The pre-compensated offset for each agent is computed in a distributed fashion in order to be adaptive to the distributed network. The updating procedure of the variant of BP is designed in a broadcasting fashion to reduce communication burden. It is rigorously proved that the proposed algorithm is convergence guaranteed. Simulations show that this method achieves almost the optimal frequency compensation accuracy with an error approaching the Cramér-Rao lower bound.

Convergence Analysis of Belief Propagation on Gaussian Graphical Models

Gaussian belief propagation (GBP) is a recursive computation method that is widely used in inference for computing marginal distributions efficiently. Depending on how the factorization of the underlying joint Gaussian distribution is performed, GBP may exhibit different convergence properties as different factorizations may lead to fundamentally different recursive update structures. In this paper, we study the convergence of GBP derived from the factorization based on the distributed linear Gaussian model. The motivation is twofold. From the factorization viewpoint, i.e., by specifically employing a factorization based on the linear Gaussian model, in some cases, we are able to bypass difficulties that exist in other convergence analysis methods that use a different (Gaussian Markov random field) factorization. From the distributed inference viewpoint, the linear Gaussian model readily conforms to the physical network topology arising in large-scale networks, and, is practically useful. For the distributed linear Gaussian model, under mild assumptions, we show analytically three main results: the GBP message inverse variance converges exponentially fast to a unique positive limit for arbitrary nonnegative initialization; we provide a necessary and sufficient convergence condition for the belief mean to converge to the optimal value; and, when the underlying factor graph is given by the union of a forest and a single loop, we show that GBP always converges.

Convergence Analysis of Distributed Inference with Vector-Valued Gaussian Belief Propagation

This paper considers inference over distributed linear Gaussian models using factor graphs and Gaussian belief propagation (BP). The distributed inference algorithm involves only local computation of the information matrix and of the mean vector, and message passing between neighbors. Under broad conditions, it is shown that the message information matrix converges to a unique positive definite limit matrix for arbitrary positive semidefinite initialization, and it approaches an arbitrarily small neighborhood of this limit matrix at a doubly exponential rate. A necessary and sufficient convergence condition for the belief mean vector to converge to the optimal centralized estimator is provided under the assumption that the message information matrix is initialized as a positive semidefinite matrix. Further, it is shown that Gaussian BP always converges when the underlying factor graph is given by the union of a forest and a single loop. The proposed convergence condition in the setup of distributed linear Gaussian models is shown to be strictly weaker than other existing convergence conditions and requirements, including the Gaussian Markov random field based walk-summability condition, and applicable to a large class of scenarios.

Convergence analysis of belief propagation for pairwise linear Gaussian models

Gaussian belief propagation (BP) has been widely used for distributed inference in large-scale networks such as the smart grid, sensor networks, and social networks, where local measurements/observations are scattered over a wide geographical area. One particular case is when two neighboring agents share a common observation. For example, to estimate voltage in the direct current (DC) power flow model, the current measurement over a power line is proportional to the voltage difference between two neighboring buses. When applying the Gaussian BP algorithm to this type of problem, the convergence condition remains an open issue. In this paper, we analyze the convergence properties of Gaussian BP for this pairwise linear Gaussian model. We show analytically that the updating information matrix converges at a geometric rate to a unique positive definite matrix with arbitrary positive semidefinite initial value and further provide the necessary and sufficient convergence condition for the belief mean vector to the optimal estimate.

Cooperative HARQ Assisted NOMA Scheme in Large-scale D2D Networks

This paper develops an interference aware design for cooperative hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) assisted non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme for large-scale device-to-device (D2D) networks. Specifically, interference aware rate selection and power allocation are considered to maximize long term average throughput (LTAT) and area spectral efficiency (ASE). The design framework is based on stochastic geometry that jointly accounts for the spatial interference correlation at the NOMA receivers as well as the temporal interference correlation across HARQ transmissions. It is found that ignoring the effect of the aggregate interference, or overlooking the spatial and temporal correlation in interference, highly overestimates the NOMA performance and produces misleading design insights. An interference oblivious selection for the power and/or transmission rates leads to violating the network outage constraints. To this end, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of NOMA transmission and manifest the importance of the cooperative HARQ to combat the negative effect of the network aggregate interference. For instance, comparing to the non-cooperative HARQ assisted NOMA, the proposed scheme can yield an outage probability reduction by $32$%. Furthermore, an interference aware optimal design that maximizes the LTAT given outage constraints leads to $47$% throughput improvement over HARQ-assisted orthogonal multiple access (OMA) scheme.

Asymptotic Outage Analysis of HARQ-IR over Time-Correlated Nakagami-$m$ Fading Channels

In this paper, outage performance of hybrid automatic repeat request with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR) is analyzed. Unlike prior analyses, time-correlated Nakagami-$m$ fading channel is considered. The outage analysis thus involves the probability distribution analysis of a product of multiple correlated shifted Gamma random variables and is more challenging than prior analyses. Based on the finding of the conditional independence of the received signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), the outage probability is exactly derived by using conditional Mellin transform. Specifically, the outage probability of HARQ-IR under time-correlated Nakagami-$m$ fading channels can be written as a weighted sum of outage probabilities of HARQ-IR over independent Nakagami fading channels, where the weightings are determined by a negative multinomial distribution. This result enables not only an efficient truncation approximation of the outage probability with uniform convergence but also asymptotic outage analysis to further extract clear insights which have never been discovered for HARQ-IR even under fast fading channels. The asymptotic outage probability is then derived in a simple form which clearly quantifies the impacts of transmit powers, channel time correlation and information transmission rate. It is proved that the asymptotic outage probability is an inverse power function of the product of transmission powers in all HARQ rounds, an increasing function of the channel time correlation coefficients, and a monotonically increasing and convex function of information transmission rate. The simple expression of the asymptotic result enables optimal power allocation and optimal rate selection of HARQ-IR with low complexity. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify our analytical results and justify the application of the asymptotic result for optimal system design.

Convergence analysis of the information matrix in Gaussian belief propagation

Gaussian belief propagation (BP) has been widely used for distributed estimation in large-scale networks such as the smart grid, communication networks, and social networks, where local measurements/observations are scattered over a wide geographical area. However, the convergence of Gaus- sian BP is still an open issue. In this paper, we consider the convergence of Gaussian BP, focusing in particular on the convergence of the information matrix. We show analytically that the exchanged message information matrix converges for arbitrary positive semidefinite initial value, and its dis- tance to the unique positive definite limit matrix decreases exponentially fast.

Distributed Hybrid Power State Estimation under PMU Sampling Phase Errors

Phasor measurement units (PMUs) have the advantage of providing direct measurements of power states. However, as the number of PMUs in a power system is limited, the traditional supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system cannot be replaced by the PMU-based system overnight. Therefore, hybrid power state estimation taking advantage of both systems is important. As experiments show that sampling phase errors among PMUs are inevitable in practical deployment, this paper proposes a distributed power state estimation algorithm under PMU phase errors. The proposed distributed algorithm only involves local computations and limited information exchange between neighboring areas, thus alleviating the heavy communication burden compared to the centralized approach. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is very close to that of centralized optimal hybrid state estimates without sampling phase error.

Rate Selection for Cooperative HARQ-CC Systems over Time-Correlated Nakagami-m Fading Channels

This paper addresses the problem of rate selection for the cooperative hybrid automatic repeat request with chase combination (HARQ-CC) system, where time correlated Nakagami-m fading channels are considered. To deal with this problem, the closed-form cumulative distribution function (CDF) for the combine SNRs through maximal ratio combining (MRC) is first derived as a generalized Fox's $\bar H$ function. By using this result, outage probability and delay-limited throughput (DLT) are derived in closed forms, which then enables the rate selection for maximum DLT. These analytical results are validated via Monte Carlo simulations. The impacts of time correlation and channel fading-order parameter $m$ upon outage probability, DLT and the optimal rate are investigated thoroughly. It is found that the system can achieve more diversity gain from less correlated channels, and the outage probability of cooperative HARQ-CC system decreases with the increase of $m$, and etc. Furthermore, the optimal rate increases with the number of retransmissions, while it decreases with the increase of the channel time correlation.

Matrix-Monotonic Optimization for MIMO Systems

For MIMO systems, due to the deployment of multiple antennas at both the transmitter and the receiver, the design variables e.g., precoders, equalizers, training sequences, etc. are usually matrices. It is well known that matrix operations are usually more complicated compared to their vector counterparts. In order to overcome the high complexity resulting from matrix variables, in this paper we investigate a class of elegant multi-objective optimization problems, namely matrix-monotonic optimization problems (MMOPs). In our work, various representative MIMO optimization problems are unified into a framework of matrix-monotonic optimization, which includes linear transceiver design, nonlinear transceiver design, training sequence design, radar waveform optimization, the corresponding robust design and so on as its special cases. Then exploiting the framework of matrix-monotonic optimization the optimal structures of the considered matrix variables can be derived first. Based on the optimal structure, the matrix-variate optimization problems can be greatly simplified into the ones with only vector variables. In particular, the dimension of the new vector variable is equal to the minimum number of columns and rows of the original matrix variable. Finally, we also extend our work to some more general cases with multiple matrix variables.

A Framework of Performance Analysis for Distributed Antenna Systems Based on Random Matrix Theory

Future communications systems will definitely be built on green infrastructures. To realize such a goal, recently a new network infrastructure named cloud radio access network (C-RAN) is proposed by China Mobile to enhance network coverage and save energy simultaneously. In C-RANs, to order to save more energy the radio front ends are separated from the colocated baseband units and distributively located in physical positions. C-RAN can be recognized as a variant of distributed antenna systems (DASs). In this paper we analyze the performance of C-RANS using random matrix theory. Due to the fact that the antennas are distributed geographically instead of being installed nearby, the variances of the entries in the considered channel matrix are different from each other. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the work on random matrices with elements having different variances is largely open, which is of great importance for DASs. In our work, some fundamental results on the eigenvalue distributions of the random matrices with different variances are derived first. Then based on these fundamental conclusions the outage probability of the considered DAS is derived. Finally, the accuracy of our analytical results is assessed by some numerical results.

A Matrix-Field Weighted Mean-Square-Error Model for MIMO Transceiver Designs

In this letter, we investigate an important and famous issue, namely weighted mean-square-error (MSE) minimization transceiver designs. In our work, for transceiver designs a novel weighted MSE model is proposed, which is defined as a linear matrix function with respect to the traditional data detection MSE matrix. The new model can be interpreted an extension of weighting operation from vector field to matrix field. Based on the proposed weighting operation a general transceiver design is proposed, which aims at minimizing an increasing matrix-monotone function of the output of the previous linear matrix function. The structure of the optimal solutions is also derived. Furthermore, two important special cases of the matrix-monotone functions are discussed in detail. It is also revealed that these two problems are exactly equivalent to the transceiver designs of sum MSE minimization and capacity maximization for dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) MIMO relaying systems, respectively. Finally, it is concluded that the AF relaying is undoubtedly this kind of weighting operation.

A General Robust Linear Transceiver Design for Multi-Hop Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relaying Systems

In this paper, linear transceiver design for multi-hop amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) relaying systems with Gaussian distributed channel estimation errors is investigated. Commonly used transceiver design criteria including weighted mean-square-error (MSE) minimization, capacity maximization, worst-MSE/MAX-MSE minimization and weighted sum-rate maximization, are considered and unified into a single matrix-variate optimization problem. A general robust design algorithm is proposed to solve the unified problem. Specifically, by exploiting majorization theory and properties of matrix-variate functions, the optimal structure of the robust transceiver is derived when either the covariance matrix of channel estimation errors seen from the transmitter side or the corresponding covariance matrix seen from the receiver side is proportional to an identity matrix. Based on the optimal structure, the original transceiver design problems are reduced to much simpler problems with only scalar variables whose solutions are readily obtained by iterative water-filling algorithm. A number of existing transceiver design algorithms are found to be special cases of the proposed solution. The differences between our work and the existing related work are also discussed in detail. The performance advantages of the proposed robust designs are demonstrated by simulation results.

A Unified Linear MSE Minimization MIMO Beamforming Design Based on Quadratic Matrix Programming

In this paper, we investigate a unified linear transceiver design with mean-square-error (MSE) as the objective function for a wide range of wireless systems. The unified design is based on an elegant mathematical programming technology namely quadratic matrix programming (QMP). It is revealed that for different wireless systems such as multi-cell coordination systems, multi-user MIMO systems, MIMO cognitive radio systems, amplify-and-forward MIMO relaying systems, the MSE minimization beamforming design problems can always be solved by solving a number of QMP problems. A comprehensive framework on how to solve QMP problems is also given.

Transceiver Design for Dual-Hop Non-regenerative MIMO-OFDM Relay Systems Under Channel Uncertainties

In this paper, linear transceiver design for dual-hop non-regenerative (amplify-and-forward (AF)) MIMO-OFDM systems under channel estimation errors is investigated. Second order moments of channel estimation errors in the two hops are first deduced. Then based on the Bayesian framework, joint design of linear forwarding matrix at the relay and equalizer at the destination under channel estimation errors is proposed to minimize the total mean-square-error (MSE) of the output signal at the destination. The optimal designs for both correlated and uncorrelated channel estimation errors are considered. The relationship with existing algorithms is also disclosed. Moreover, this design is extended to the joint design involving source precoder design. Simulation results show that the proposed design outperforms the design based on estimated channel state information only.
