Re-acceleration of Energetic Ions via Small-Scale Reconnection in Magnetic Fusion Plasmas

We report the first observation on the EXL-50U spherical torus that energetic particles injected by neutral beam injection (NBI) can be stably accelerated to significantly higher energies - reaching up to 2.5 times the injection energy, occurring without significant large-scale magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) bursts. Simulations based on EXL-50U parameters indicate that small-scale magnetic reconnection, mediated by multiple magnetic islands, fails to accelerate bulk thermal ions but efficiently energizes seed fast ions. Unlike global MHD events, such small-scale reconnection is ubiquitous in magnetic confinement devices and does not degrade core confinement. This mechanism offers a novel and potentially universal channel for auxiliary ion heating in future fusion reactors.

Non-Inductive Current Start-Up Using Multi-Harmonic Electron Cyclotron Wave and Current Ramp-Up Through Combined Electron Cyclotron Wave and Ohmic Heating in EXL-50U Spherical Torus

The non-inductive current start-up by multi-harmonic electron cyclotron wave has been systematically investigated in the EXL-50U spherical torus. Significant enhancements of the driven current with increasing number of resonance layers have been demonstrated by variation of the number of harmonic resonance layers of the ECW through adjustment of the magnetic field or plasma cross section. The critical role of multi-harmonic ECW in enhancing the driven current has been experimentally verified for the first time. To explain the related experimental observations, a physical mechanism involving multi-harmonic heating, multiple reflections, and multi-pass absorption - leading to the generation of high-energy electrons via X-mode wave or electron Bernstein wave has been proposed. The current drive capacity of the first harmonic extraordinary mode of the ECW has also been experimentally confirmed for the first time. After the application of Ohmic heating during the current ramp-up phase, the current drive efficiency of ECW is further enhanced. Leveraging the synergistic effect between ECW and Ohmic heating, EXL-50U achieved a plasma current of 1 MA, with the non-inductively driven current fraction reaching 70%.

Overview of EXL-50 Research Progress and Future Plan

XuanLong-50 (EXL-50) is the first medium-size spherical torus (ST) in China, with the toroidal field at major radius at 50 cm around 0.5T. CS-free and non-inductive current drive via electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) was the main physics research issue for EXL-50. Discharges with plasma currents of 50 kA - 180 kA were routinely obtained in EXL-50, with the current flattop sustained for up to or beyond 2 s. The current drive effectiveness on EXL-50 was as high as 1 A/W for low-density discharges using 28GHz ECRH alone for heating power less than 200 kW. The plasma current reached Ip>80 kA for high-density (5*10e18m-2) discharges with 150 kW 28GHz ECRH. Higher performance discharge (Ip of about 120 kA and core density of about 1*10e19m-3) was achieved with 150 kW 50GHz ECRH. The plasma current in EXL-50 was mainly carried by the energetic electrons.Multi-fluid equilibrium model has been successfully applied to reconstruct the magnetic flux surface and the measured plasma parameters of the EXL-50 equilibrium. The physics mechanisms for the solenoid-free ECRH current drive and the energetic electrons has also been investigated. Preliminary experimental results show that 100 kW of lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) waves can drive 20 kA of plasma current. Several boron injection systems were installed and tested in EXL-50, including B2H6 gas puffing, boron powder injection, boron pellet injection. The research plan of EXL-50U, which is the upgrade machine of EXL-50, is also presented.

Observation of whistler wave instability driven by temperature anisotropy of energetic electrons on EXL-50 spherical torus

Electromagnetic modes in the frequency range of 30-120MHz were observed in electron cyclotron wave (ECW) steady state plasmas on the ENN XuanLong-50 (EXL-50) spherical torus. These modes were found to have multiple bands of frequencies proportional to the Alfvén velocity. This indicates that the observed mode frequencies satisfy the dispersion relation of whistler waves. In addition, suppression of the whistler waves by the synergistic effect of Lower Hybrid Wave (LHW) and ECW was also observed. This suggests that the whistler waves were driven by temperature anisotropy of energetic electrons. These are the first such observations (not runaway discharge) made in magnetically confined toroidal plasmas and may have important implications for studying wave-particle interactions, RF wave current driver, and runaway electron control in future fusion devices.

Experimental investigation of kinetic instabilities driven by runaway electrons in the EXL-50 spherical torus

In this study, the first observation of high-frequency instabilities driven by runaway electrons has been reported in the EXL-50 spherical torus using a high-frequency magnetic pickup coil. The central frequency of these instabilities is found to be exponentially dependent on the plasma density, similar to the dispersion relation of the whistler wave. The instability frequency displays chirping characteristics consistent with the Berk-Breizman model of beam instability. Theoretically, the excitation threshold of the instability driven by runaway electrons is related to the ratio of the runaway electron density to the background plasma density, and such a relationship is first demonstrated experimentally in this study. The instability can be stabilized by increasing the plasma density, consistent with the wave-particle resonance mechanism. This investigation demonstrates the controlled excitation of chirping instabilities in a tokamak plasma and reveals new features of these instabilities, thereby advancing the understanding of the mechanisms for controlling and mitigating runaway electrons.

Non-inductive plasma current sustainment with stochastic electron cyclotron in EXL-50 spherical torus

The start-up and sustainment of a stochastic wave non-inductive current on a spherical torus was experimentally demonstrated for the first time using only electron cyclotron waves. The plasma current is insensitive to the injection angle of ECWs and approximately linearly correlated with the slope of the X-ray spectrum. Its direction is determined by the vertical magnetic field (BV). The temporal development in the number of X-ray bremsstrahlung photons with a specified energy is consistent with the stochastic heating model. Moreover, the ratio of Amps to Watts of the ECW is generally >1 kA/kW under normal conditions (maximum plasma current: 150 kA, ECW: 140 kW). The experimental results are explained using the stochastic heating model of the asymmetric electron velocity distribution in stochastic electromagnetic waves.

Observation of a strong correlation between the positive floating potential near the edge and plasma current on EXL-50 ECW plasma

Fully non-inductive plasma current start-up without the central solenoid in ECW plasma was used on EXL-50 Spherical Torus with a weak external vertical field (Bv). Generally, the number of electrons leaving to the vessel wall by the gradient Bt is larger than ions, and the positive potential was built up in plasma. The relationship between floating potential and the plasma current was studied using the Langmuir probes near the boundary. The results show that the floating potential is positive (about 200V) and has a strong correlation with plasma current. In open magnetic field, the plasma current is driven by the high energy electrons in preferential confinement, the plasma current and potential approximately positively correlated with total electron density. After forming the closed flux surface, the plasma current consists mainly of the ECW driven current, and potential is negatively correlated with plasma current. By actively adjusting the Bv, it demonstrated that the positive voltage is approximately inversely correlated with the Bv and plasma current (Ip). Considering that the plasma temperature near the boundary is quite low (~eV), the positive voltage near the boundary caused by the high-energy electron loss. Therefore, the measurements of the boundary potential are important for the study of high-energy electron confinement performance, noninductive plasma current start-up and current driven.

Solenoid-free current drive via ECRH in EXL-50 spherical torus plasmas

As a new spherical tokamak (ST) designed to simplify engineering requirements of a possible future fusion power source, the EXL-50 experiment features a low aspect ratio (A) vacuum vessel (VV), encircling a central post assembly containing the toroidal field coil conductors without a central solenoid. Multiple electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) resonances are located within the VV to improve current drive effectiveness. Copious energetic electrons are produced and measured with hard X-ray detectors, carry the bulk of the plasma current ranging from 50kA to 150kA, which is maintained for more than 1s duration. It is observed that over one Ampere current can be maintained per Watt of ECRH power issued from the 28-GHz gyrotrons. The plasma current reaches Ip>80kA for high density (>5e18me-2) discharge with 150kW ECHR heating. An analysis was carried out combining reconstructed multi-fluid equilibrium, guiding-center orbits of energetic electrons, and resonant heating mechanisms. It is verified that in EXL-50 a broadly distributed current of energetic electrons creates smaller closed magnetic-flux surfaces of low aspect ratio that in turn confine the thermal plasma electrons and ions and participate in maintaining the equilibrium force-balance.
