Poly(vinylidene fluoride) under finite electric displacement fields: a removable $α\!\to\!δ$ reorientation barrier and a persistent first-order $δ\!\to\!β$ conformational change

The $α$, $δ$, and $β$ phases of PVDF are interconverted by electrical poling and mechanical drawing, yet the thermodynamics under a controlled electrical boundary condition has not been established from first principles. We evaluate the zero-temperature free energy at fixed electric displacement $D$ from van der Waals density-functional calculations along two constrained coordinates in a common 24-atom cell: a tilt of the gauche C--C bonds that maps antipolar $α$ onto polar $δ$ (cell change $<1\%$), and a backbone torsion that straightens TG$^+$TG$^-$ chains into all-trans $β$ (chain-repeat strain $10.6\%$). As $D$ increases from 0 to $0.30$~C\,m$^{-2}$, the lowest homogeneous free energy switches from $α$ to $δ$ at $D_{c1}=0.046$~C\,m$^{-2}$ and from $δ$ to $β$ at $D_{c2}=0.157$~C\,m$^{-2}$. At $T=0$ with domain-wall energy neglected, a $δ$ multidomain state lies $14.3$~meV per cell below homogeneous $α$ at every $D$. A $Γ$-point harmonic estimate suggests that vibrations reverse this ordering at room temperature. $δ$ and $β$ coexist for $0.11<D<0.21$~C\,m$^{-2}$ at $E^*=0.69$~GV\,m$^{-1}$, independent of the screening constant. The tilt barrier falls from $0.66$~eV per cell at $D=0$ to $17$~meV at $D=0.30$~C\,m$^{-2}$ (below $k_BT$ at $300$~K), while the torsion barrier remains $0.66$~eV at $D_{c2}$ and $0.34$~eV at $D=0.30$~C\,m$^{-2}$, so $δ\toβ$ stays first order. Much of the difference traces to the path effective charge ($0.28e$ for the tilt, $0.18e$ for the torsion). Scaling shows the tilt barrier would survive with the torsion charge; the smaller torsion charge accounts for about half the barrier it retains. The landscape accounts for why a field produces $δ$ and why $β$ is reached by drawing, and suggests that raising that charge could let a field alone produce $β$.

First-Principles DFT Study of Ferroelectric-to-Antiferroelectric Phase Transitions in LiTaO$_3$ under Electric Boundary Conditions

Ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases of LiTaO$_3$ compete under different electric boundary conditions. First-principles density-functional calculations show that the high-symmetry reference structure supports two relevant unstable $Γ$ modes: a polar $A_{2u}$ mode at $181i$ cm$^{-1}$ that condenses into the ferroelectric (FE) phase, and an antipolar $A_{2g}$ mode at $103i$ cm$^{-1}$ that condenses into the antiferroelectric (AFE) phase. Under short-circuit conditions the FE phase is the global minimum, with a well depth of $\approx 144$ meV. Under open-circuit conditions the FE phase is destabilized by the unscreened depolarization field and the AFE phase becomes the ground state, with a well depth of $\approx 19$ meV. A weakly unstable longitudinal-optic mode at $48.3i$ cm$^{-1}$ yields a well of only $\approx 0.24$ meV and is thermodynamically irrelevant. Mapping the free energy versus electric displacement $D$ locates a second-order FE$\leftrightarrow$AFE transition at $D_c=0.051$ C/m$^2$, lower than the corresponding $0.07$ C/m$^2$ in LiNbO$_3$ and therefore more accessible experimentally.

Intertwined Hyperferroelectricity, Tunable Multiple Topological Phases and Giant Rashba Effect in Wurtzite LiZnAs

Composite quantum compounds offer a fertile ground for uncovering the complex interrelations between seemingly distinct phenomena in condensed matter physics for advanced nonvolatile and spintronics applications. Beyond topological superconductors and axion insulators, the idea of intertwined Hyperferroelectricity (HyFE), multiple topological phases and Rashba spin-splitting with reversible spin textures represents the local, global and symmetry-driven characteristics of quantum materials, respectively, offering unique pathways for enhanced functionalities. We unveiled a unified framework to achieve this synergy through the presence of crystalline symmetries and spin-orbit coupling in LiZnAs compound using first-principles calculations. HyFE exhibits ability to maintain spontaneous polarization under open-circuit boundary conditions, even with existence of depolarization field while Rashba effect exhibits paradigmatic spin texture in momentum space with tangential vector field. The presence of unstable $A_{2u}(LO)$ mode leads to free energy minimum with significant well depth and polarization of -66 meV and $P_{HyFE} = 0.282~C/m^2$, respectively indicating stable HyFE. The robust HyFE stem from mode-specific effective charges and larger high-frequency dielectric constants. This study also addresses the subtle question of whether critical point of topological phase transition shifts in response to drastically different Rashba spin-splitting values obtained from VASP and WIEN2k. Moreover, biaxial strain (BAS) induced Weyl semimetal (at 3.4% BAS) and topological insulating phase (after 3.4% BAS) is observed with giant Rashba coefficient of 5.91 eV Å and 2.42 eV Å, respectively. Furthermore, switching of bulk polarization leads to spin texture reversal, providing a robust mechanism to leverage spin degrees of freedom in these Hyperferroelectric Rashba topological materials.
