On the strict majorant property in arbitrary dimensions

In this work we study $d$-dimensional majorant properties. We prove that a set of frequencies in ${\mathbb Z}^d$ satisfies the strict majorant property on $L^p([0,1]^d)$ for all $p> 0$ if and only if the set is affinely independent. We further construct three types of violations of the strict majorant property. Any set of at least $d+2$ frequencies in ${\mathbb Z}^d$ violates the strict majorant property on $L^p([0,1]^d)$ for an open interval of $p \not\in 2 {\mathbb N}$ of length 2. Any infinite set of frequencies in ${\mathbb Z}^d$ violates the strict majorant property on $L^p([0,1]^d)$ for an infinite sequence of open intervals of $p \not\in 2 {\mathbb N}$ of length $2$. Finally, given any $p>0$ with $p \not\in 2{\mathbb N}$, we exhibit a set of $d+2$ frequencies on the moment curve in ${\mathbb R}^d$ that violate the strict majorant property on $L^p([0,1]^d).$

Decoupling inequalities for quadratic forms

We prove sharp $\ell^q L^p$ decoupling inequalities for $p,q \in [2,\infty)$ and arbitrary tuples of quadratic forms. Connections to prior results on decoupling inequalities for quadratic forms are also explained. We also include some applications of our results to exponential sum estimates and to Fourier restriction estimates. The proof of our main result is based on scale-dependent Brascamp--Lieb inequalities.

Decoupling for two quadratic forms in three variables: a complete characterization

We prove sharp decoupling inequalities for all degenerate surfaces of codimension two in $\mathbb{R}^5$ given by two quadratic forms in three variables. Together with previous work by Demeter, Guo, and Shi in the non-degenerate case (arXiv:1609.04107), this provides a classification of decoupling inequalities for pairs of quadratic forms in three variables.

Sobolev improving for averages over curves in $\mathbf{R^4}$

We study $L^p$-Sobolev improving for averaging operators $A_γ$ given by convolution with a compactly supported smooth density $μ_γ$ on a non-degenerate curve. In particular, in 4 dimensions we show that $A_γ$ maps $L^p(\mathbb{R}^4)$ the Sobolev space $L^p_{1/p}(\mathbb{R}^4)$ for all $6 < p < \infty$. This implies the complete optimal range of $L^p$-Sobolev estimates, except possibly for certain endpoint cases. The proof relies on decoupling inequalities for a family of cones which decompose the wave front set of $μ_γ$. In higher dimensions, a new non-trivial necessary condition for $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n) \to L^p_{1/p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ boundedness is obtained, which motivates a conjectural range of estimates.

Improved discrete restriction for the parabola

Using ideas from Guth-Maldague-Wang and working over $\mathbb{Q}_p$, we show that the discrete restriction constant for the parabola is $O_{\varepsilon}((\log M)^{2 + \varepsilon})$.

A stationary set method for estimating oscillatory integrals

We propose a new method of estimating oscillatory integrals, which we call a stationary set method. We use it to obtain the sharp convergence exponents of Tarry's problems in dimension two for every degree $k\ge 2$. As a consequence, we obtain sharp Fourier extension estimates for a family of monomial surfaces.

The Bochner-Riesz problem: an old approach revisited

We show that the recent techniques developed to study the Fourier restriction problem apply equally well to the Bochner-Riesz problem. This is achieved via applying a pseudo-conformal transformation and a two-parameter induction-on-scales argument. As a consequence, we improve the Bochner-Riesz problem to the best known range of the Fourier restriction problem in all high dimensions.

Sharp $L^p$ bounds for the helical maximal function

We establish the $L^p(\mathbb{R}^3)$ boundedness of the helical maximal function for the sharp range $p>3$. Our results improve the previous known bounds for $p>4$. The key ingredient is a new microlocal smoothing estimate for averages along dilates of the helix, which is established via a square function analysis.

The circular maximal operator on Heisenberg radial functions

Lebesgue space estimates are obtained for the circular maximal function on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^1$ restricted to a class of Heisenberg radial functions. Under this assumption, the problem reduces to studying a maximal operator on the Euclidean plane. This operator has a number of interesting features: it is associated to a non-smooth curve distribution and, furthermore, fails both the usual rotational curvature and cinematic curvature conditions.

A variable coefficient multi-frequency lemma

We show a variable coefficient version of Bourgain's multi-frequency lemma. It can be used to obtain major arc estimates for a discrete Stein--Wainger type operator considered by Krause arXiv:1803.09431 and Roos arXiv:1907.00405.

Decoupling for moment manifolds associated to Arkhipov--Chubarikov--Karatsuba systems

We prove $\ell^{p}L^{p}$ decoupling inequalities for a class of moment manifolds. These inequalities imply optimal mean value estimates for multidimensional Weyl sums of the kind considered by Arkhipov, Chubarikov, and Karatsuba and by Parsell. In our proofs we take a new point of view on the Bourgain--Demeter--Guth induction on scales argument. This point of view substantially simplifies even the proof of $\ell^{2}L^{p}$ decoupling for the moment curve.

A maximal function for families of Hilbert transforms along homogeneous curves

Let $H^{(u)}$ be the Hilbert transform along the parabola $(t, ut^2)$ where $u\in \mathbb R$. For a set $U$ of positive numbers consider the maximal function $\mathcal{H}^U \!f= \sup\{|H^{(u)}\! f|: u\in U\}$. We obtain an (essentially) optimal result for the $L^p$ operator norm of $\mathcal{H}^U$ when $2<p<\infty$. The results are proved for families of Hilbert transforms along more general nonflat homogeneous curves.

Reversing a philosophy: from counting to square functions and decoupling

Breakthrough work of Bourgain, Demeter, and Guth recently established that decoupling inequalities can prove powerful results on counting integral solutions to systems of Diophantine equations. In this note we demonstrate that in appropriate situations this implication can also be reversed. As a first example, we observe that a count for the number of integral solutions to a system of Diophantine equations implies a discrete decoupling inequality. Second, in our main result we prove an $L^{2n}$ square function estimate (which implies a corresponding decoupling estimate) for the extension operator associated to a non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The proof is via a combinatorial argument that builds on the idea that if $γ$ is a non-degenerate curve in $\mathbb{R}^n$, then as long as $x_1,\ldots, x_{2n}$ are chosen from a sufficiently well-separated set, then $ γ(x_1)+\cdots+γ(x_n) = γ(x_{n+1}) + \cdots + γ(x_{2n}) $ essentially only admits solutions in which $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ is a permutation of $x_{n+1},\ldots, x_{2n}$.
