Robust and Well-conditioned Sparse Estimation for High-dimensional Covariance Matrices

Estimating covariance matrices with high-dimensional complex data presents significant challenges, particularly concerning positive definiteness, sparsity, and numerical stability. Existing robust sparse estimators often fail to guarantee positive definiteness in finite samples, while subsequent positive-definite correction can degrade sparsity and lack explicit control over the condition number. To address these limitations, we propose a novel robust and well-conditioned sparse covariance matrix estimator. Our key innovation is the direct incorporation of a condition number constraint within a robust adaptive thresholding framework. This constraint simultaneously ensures positive definiteness, enforces a controllable level of numerical stability, and preserves the desired sparse structure without resorting to post-hoc modifications that compromise sparsity. We formulate the estimation as a convex optimization problem and develop an efficient alternating direction algorithm with guaranteed convergence. Theoretically, we establish that the proposed estimator achieves the minimax optimal convergence rate under the Frobenius norm. Comprehensive simulations and real-data applications demonstrate that our method consistently produces positive definite, well-conditioned, and sparse estimates, and achieves comparable or superior numerical stability to eigenvalue-bound methods while requiring less tuning parameters.

$L_1$-norm Regularized Indefinite Kernel Logistic Regression

Kernel logistic regression (KLR) is a powerful classification method widely applied across diverse domains. In many real-world scenarios, indefinite kernels capture more domain-specific structural information than positive definite kernels. This paper proposes a novel $L_1$-norm regularized indefinite kernel logistic regression (RIKLR) model, which extends the existing IKLR framework by introducing sparsity via an $L_1$-norm penalty. The introduction of this regularization enhances interpretability and generalization while introducing nonsmoothness and nonconvexity into the optimization landscape. To address these challenges, a theoretically grounded and computationally efficient proximal linearized algorithm is developed. Experimental results on multiple benchmark datasets demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method in terms of both accuracy and sparsity.

Magnetic field stabilized Wigner crystal states in a graphene moir\'e superlattice

Wigner crystals are predicted as the crystallization of the dilute electron gas moving in a uniform background when the electron-electron Coulomb energy dominates the kinetic energy. The Wigner crystal has previously been observed in the ultraclean two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) present on the surface of liquid helium and in semiconductor quantum wells at high magnetic field. More recently, Wigner crystals have also been reported in WS2/WSe2 moir\'e heterostructures. ABC-stacked trilayer graphene on boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) moir\'e superlattices provide a unique tunable platform to explore Wigner crystal states where the electron correlation can be controlled by electric and magnetic field. Here we report the observation of magnetic field stabilized Wigner crystal states in a ABC-TLG/hBN moir\'e superlattice. We show that correlated insulating states emerge at multiple fractional and integer fillings corresponding to v = 1/3, 2/3, 1, 4/3, 5/3 and 2 electrons per moir\'e lattice site under a magnetic field. These correlated insulating states can be attributed to generalized Mott states for the integer fillings (v = 1, 2) and generalized Wigner crystal states for the fractional fillings (v = 1/3, 2/3, 4/3, 5/3). The generalized Wigner crystal states are stabilized by a vertical magnetic field, and they are strongest at one magnetic flux quantum per three moir\'e superlattices. The correlated insulating states at v = 2 persists up to 30 Tesla, which can be described by a Mott-Hofstadter transition at high magnetic field. The tunable Mott and Wigner crystal states in the ABC-TLG/hBN highlight the opportunities to discover new correlated quantum phases due to the interplay between the magnetic field and moir\'e flatbands.

A Systematic Approach for Inertial Sensor Calibration of Gravity Recovery Satellites and Its Application to Taiji-1 Mission

High-precision inertial sensors or accelerometers can provide us references of free-falling motions in gravitational field in space. They serve as the key payloads for gravity recovery missions such as the CHAMP, the GRACE-type missions, and the planned Next Generation Gravity Missions. In this work, a systematic method of electrostatic inertial sensor calibrations for gravity recovery satellites is suggested, which is applied to and verified with the Taiji-1 mission. With this method, the complete operating parameters including the scale factors, the center of mass offset vector and the intrinsic biased acceleration can be precisely calibrated with only two sets of short-term in-orbit experiments. Taiji-1 is the first technology demonstration satellite of the "Taiji Program in Space", which, in its final extended phase in 2022, could be viewed as operating in the mode of a high-low satellite-to-satellite tracking gravity mission. Based on the calibration principles, swing maneuvers with time span about 200 s and rolling maneuvers for 19 days were conducted by Taiji-1 in 2022. The inertial sensor's operating parameters are precisely re-calibrated with Kalman filters and are updated to the Taiji-1 science team. Data from one of the sensitive axis is re-processed with the updated operating parameters, and the performance is found to be slightly improved compared with former results. This approach could be of high reference value for the accelerometer or inertial sensor calibrations of the GFO, the Chinese GRACE-type mission, and the Next Generation Gravity Missions. This could also shed some light on the in-orbit calibrations of the ultra-precision inertial sensors for future GW space antennas because of the technological inheritance between these two generations of inertial sensors.

Correlated interlayer exciton insulator in double layers of monolayer WSe2 and moir\'e WS2/WSe2

Moir\'e superlattices in van der Waals heterostructures have emerged as a powerful tool for engineering novel quantum phenomena. Here we report the observation of a correlated interlayer exciton insulator in a double-layer heterostructure composed of a WSe2 monolayer and a WS2/WSe2 moir\'e bilayer that are separated by an ultrathin hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). The moir\'e WS2/WSe2 bilayer features a Mott insulator state at hole density p/p0 = 1, where p0 corresponds to one hole per moir\'e lattice site. When electrons are added to the Mott insulator in the WS2/WSe2 moir\'e bilayer and an equal number of holes are injected into the WSe2 monolayer, a new interlayer exciton insulator emerges with the holes in the WSe2 monolayer and the electrons in the doped Mott insulator bound together through interlayer Coulomb interactions. The excitonic insulator is stable up to a critical hole density of ~ 0.5p0 in the WSe2 monolayer, beyond which the system becomes metallic. Our study highlights the opportunities for realizing novel quantum phases in double-layer moir\'e systems due to the interplay between the moir\'e flat band and strong interlayer electron interactions.

Efficient Fizeau Drag from Dirac electrons in monolayer graphene

Fizeau demonstrated in 1850 that the speed of light can be modified when it is propagating in moving media. Can we achieve such control of the light speed efficiently with a fast-moving electron media by passing electrical current? Because the strong electromagnetic coupling between the electron and light leads to the collective excitation of plasmon polaritons, it will manifest as the plasmonic Doppler effect. Experimental observation of the plasmonic Doppler effect in electronic system has been challenge because the plasmon propagation speed is much faster than the electron drift velocity in conventional noble metals. Here, we report direct observation of Fizeau drag of plasmon polaritons in strongly biased graphene by exploiting the high electron mobility and the slow plasmon propagation of massless Dirac electrons. The large bias current in graphene creates a fast drifting Dirac electron medium hosting the plasmon polariton. It results in nonreciprocal plasmon propagation, where plasmons moving with the drifting electron media propagate at an enhanced speed. We measure the Doppler-shifted plasmon wavelength using a cryogenic near-field infrared nanoscopy, which directly images the plasmon polariton mode in the biased graphene at low temperature. We observe a plasmon wavelength difference up to 3.6% between plasmon moving along and against the drifting electron media. Our findings on the plasmonic Doppler effect open new opportunities for electrical control of non-reciprocal surface plasmon polaritons in nonequilibrium systems.

An efficient numerical method for condition number constrained covariance matrix approximation

In the high-dimensional data setting, the sample covariance matrix is singular. In order to get a numerically stable and positive definite modification of the sample covariance matrix in the high-dimensional data setting, in this paper we consider the condition number constrained covariance matrix approximation problem and present its explicit solution with respect to the Frobenius norm. The condition number constraint guarantees the numerical stability and positive definiteness of the approximation form simultaneously. By exploiting the special structure of the data matrix in the high-dimensional data setting, we also propose some new algorithms based on efficient matrix decomposition techniques. Numerical experiments are also given to show the computational efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

Tunable ferromagnetism at non-integer filling of a moiré superlattice

The flat bands resulting from moiré superlattices in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) and ABC-trilayer graphene aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (ABC-TLG/hBN) have been shown to give rise to fascinating correlated electron phenomena such as correlated insulators and superconductivity. More recently, orbital magnetism associated with correlated Chern insulators was found in this class of layered structures centered at integer multiples of n0, the density corresponding to one electron per moiré superlattice unit cell. Here we report the experimental observation of ferromagnetism at fractional filling of a flat Chern band in an ABC-TLG/hBN moirésuperlattice. The ferromagnetic state exhibits prominent ferromagnetic hysteresis behavior with large anomalous Hall resistivity in a broad region of densities, centered in the valence miniband at n = -2.3 n0. This ferromagnetism depends very sensitively on the control parameters in the moiré system: not only the magnitude of the anomalous Hall signal, but also the sign of the hysteretic ferromagnetic response can be modulated by tuning the carrier density and displacement field. Our discovery of electrically tunable ferromagnetism in a moiré Chern band at non-integer filling highlights the opportunities for exploring new correlated ferromagnetic states in moiré heterostructures.

On the condition number theory of the equality constrained indefinite least squares problem

In this paper, within a unified framework of the condition number theory we present the explicit expression of the projected condition number of the equality constrained indefinite least squares problem. By setting specific norms and parameters, some widely used condition numbers, like the normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers follow as its special cases. Considering practical applications and computation, some new compact forms or upper bounds of the projected condition numbers are given to improve the computational efficiency. The new compact forms are of particular interest in calculating the exact value of the 2-norm projected condition numbers. When the equality constrained indefinite least squares problem degenerates into some specific least squares problems, our results give some new findings on the condition number theory of these specific least squares problems. Numerical experiments are given to illustrate our theoretical results.

Tunable Correlated Chern Insulator and Ferromagnetism in Trilayer Graphene/Boron Nitride Moiré Superlattice

Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable Chern number. Here we report the experimental observation of a correlated Chern insulator in a TLG/hBN moiré superlattice. We show that reversing the direction of the applied vertical electric field switches TLG/hBN's moiré minibands between zero and finite Chern numbers, as revealed by dramatic changes in magneto-transport behavior. For topological hole minibands tuned to have a finite Chern number, we focus on 1/4 filling, corresponding to one hole per moiré unit cell. The Hall resistance is well quantized at h/2e2, i.e. C = 2, for |B| > 0.4 T. The correlated Chern insulator is ferromagnetic, exhibiting significant magnetic hysteresis and a large anomalous Hall signal at zero magnetic field. Our discovery of a C = 2 Chern insulator at zero magnetic field should open up exciting opportunities for discovering novel correlated topological states, possibly with novel topological excitations, in nearly flat and topologically nontrivial moiré minibands.

On the penalized maximum likelihood estimation of high-dimensional approximate factor model

In this paper, we mainly focus on the penalized maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) of the high-dimensional approximate factor model. Since the current estimation procedure can not guarantee the positive definiteness of the error covariance matrix, by reformulating the estimation of error covariance matrix and based on the lagrangian duality, we propose an accelerated proximal gradient (APG) algorithm to give a positive definite estimate of the error covariance matrix. Combined the APG algorithm with EM method, a new estimation procedure is proposed to estimate the high-dimensional approximate factor model. The new method not only gives positive definite estimate of error covariance matrix but also improves the efficiency of estimation for the high-dimensional approximate factor model. Although the proposed algorithm can not guarantee a global unique solution, it enjoys a desirable non-increasing property. The efficiency of the new algorithm on estimation and forecasting is also investigated via simulation and real data analysis.

A note on the condition number of the scaled total least squares problem

In this paper, we consider the explicit expressions of the normwise condition number for the scaled total least squares problem. Some techniques are introduced to simplify the expression of the condition number, and some new results are derived. Based on these new results, new expressions of the condition number for the total least squares problem can be deduced as a special case. New forms of the condition number enjoy some storage and computational advantages. We also proposed three different methods to estimate the condition number. Some numerical experiments are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of our results.

Ultrafast Epitaxial Growth of Metre-Sized Single-Crystal Graphene on Industrial Cu Foil

A foundation of the modern technology that uses single-crystal silicon has been the growth of high-quality single-crystal Si ingots with diameters up to 12 inches or larger. For many applications of graphene, large-area high-quality (ideally of single-crystal) material will be enabling. Since the first growth on copper foil a decade ago, inch-sized single-crystal graphene has been achieved. We present here the growth, in 20 minutes, of a graphene film of 5 x 50 cm2 dimension with > 99% ultra-highly oriented grains. This growth was achieved by: (i) synthesis of sub-metre-sized single-crystal Cu(111) foil as substrate; (ii) epitaxial growth of graphene islands on the Cu(111) surface; (iii) seamless merging of such graphene islands into a graphene film with high single crystallinity and (iv) the ultrafast growth of graphene film. These achievements were realized by a temperature-driven annealing technique to produce single-crystal Cu(111) from industrial polycrystalline Cu foil and the marvellous effects of a continuous oxygen supply from an adjacent oxide. The as-synthesized graphene film, with very few misoriented grains (if any), has a mobility up to ~ 23,000 cm2V-1s-1 at 4 K and room temperature sheet resistance of ~ 230 ohm/square. It is very likely that this approach can be scaled up to achieve exceptionally large and high-quality graphene films with single crystallinity, and thus realize various industrial-level applications at a low cost.

On the partial condition numbers for the indefinite least squares problem

The condition number of a linear function of the indefinite least squares solution is called the partial condition number for the indefinite least squares problem. In this paper, based on a new and very general condition number which can be called the unified condition number, the expression of the partial unified condition number is first presented when the data space is measured by the general weighted product norm. Then, by setting the specific norms and weight parameters, we obtain the expressions of the partial normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers. Moreover, the corresponding structured partial condition numbers are also taken into consideration when the problem is structured, whose expressions are given. Considering the connections between the indefinite and total least squares problems, we derive the (structured) partial condition numbers for the latter, which generalize the ones in the literature. To estimate these condition numbers effectively and reliably, the probabilistic spectral norm estimator and the small-sample statistical condition estimation method are applied and three related algorithms are devised. Finally, the obtained results are illustrated by numerical experiments.

Partial condition number for the equality constrained linear least squares problem

In this paper, the normwise condition number of a linear function of the equality constrained linear least squares solution called the partial condition number is considered. Its expression and closed formulae are first presented when the data space and the solution space are measured by the weighted Frobenius norm and the Euclidean norm, respectively. Then, we investigate the corresponding structured partial condition number when the problem is structured. To estimate these condition numbers with high reliability, the probabilistic spectral norm estimator and the small-sample statistical condition estimation method are applied and two algorithms are devised. The obtained results are illustrated by numerical examples.

Perturbation analysis for the periodic generalized coupled Sylvester equation

In this paper, we consider the perturbation analysis for the periodic generalized coupled Sylvester (PGCS) equation. The normwise backward error for this equation is first obtained. Then, we present its normwise and componentwise perturbation bounds, from which the normwise and effective condition numbers are derived. Moreover, the mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the PGCS equation are also given. To estimate these condition numbers with high reliability, the probabilistic spectral norm estimator and the statistical condition estimation method are applied. The obtained results are illustrated by numerical examples.
