Pion and Kaon Structure at the Electron-Ion Collider

Understanding the origin and dynamics of hadron structure and in turn that of atomic nuclei is a central goal of nuclear physics. This challenge entails the questions of how does the roughly 1 GeV mass-scale that characterizes atomic nuclei appear; why does it have the observed value; and, enigmatically, why are the composite Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) abnormally light in comparison? In this perspective, we provide an analysis of the mass budget of the pion and proton in QCD; discuss the special role of the kaon, which lies near the boundary between dominance of strong and Higgs mass-generation mechanisms; and explain the need for a coherent effort in QCD phenomenology and continuum calculations, in exa-scale computing as provided by lattice QCD, and in experiments to make progress in understanding the origins of hadron masses and the distribution of that mass within them. We compare the unique capabilities foreseen at the electron-ion collider (EIC) with those at the hadron-electron ring accelerator (HERA), the only previous electron-proton collider; and describe five key experimental measurements, enabled by the EIC and aimed at delivering fundamental insights that will generate concrete answers to the questions of how mass and structure arise in the pion and kaon, the Standard Model's NG modes, whose surprisingly low mass is critical to the evolution of our Universe.

Parton Distribution Functions from a Light Front Hamiltonian and QCD Evolution for Light Mesons

We obtain the pion and the kaon parton distribution functions from the eigenstates of a light front effective Hamiltonian in the constituent quark-antiquark representation suitable for low-momentum scale applications. By taking these scales as the only free parameters, the valence quark distribution functions of the pion, after QCD evolution, are consistent with the data from the FNAL-E615 experiment. The ratio of the up quark distribution of the kaon to that of the pion also agrees with the CERN-NA3 experiment. Supplemented by known parton distribution functions for the nucleons, we further obtain the cross section consistent with experimental data for the ${π^-\rm{nucleus}}\rightarrow{μ^+μ^-X}$ Drell-Yan process.

Towards Minkowski space solutions of Dyson-Schwinger Equations through un-Wick rotation

The fermion self-energy is calculated from the rainbow-ladder truncation of the Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) in quantum electrodynamics (QED) for spacelike momenta and in the complex momentum plane close to the timelike region, both using Pauli-Villars regularization. Specifically, the DSE is solved in the complex momentum plane by rotating either the energy component of the four-momentum or the magnitude of Euclidean four-momentum to reach the timelike region in Minkowski space. The coupling constant is appropriately chosen to ensure the singularities of the fermion propagator are located in the timelike region while producing significant differences from the perturbative solutions. For simplicity, we choose Feynman gauge, but the method is applicable in other covariant gauges as well. We demonstrate that the approximate spectral representation based on the fermion self-energy near the timelike region is consistent with the solution of the DSE directly in the Euclidean space.

Basis light front quantization for the charged light mesons with color singlet Nambu--Jona-Lasinio interactions

We apply the basis light front quantization (BLFQ) approach to describe the valence structures of the charged light meson ground states. Specifically, the light front wavefunctions of $π^\pm$, $ρ^\pm$, $K^\pm$, and $K^{*\pm}$ are obtained as the eigenvectors of the light front effective Hamiltonians with confinement potentials supplemented by the color singlet Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) interactions. We adjust our model such that the spectrum of these ground states and the charge radii of the pseudoscalar states agree with experimental results. We present the elastic form factors and parton distribution amplitudes (PDAs) as illustrations of the internal structures of the pseudoscalar pions and kaons in terms of valence quarks.

Hadron Spectra, Decays and Scattering Properties within Basis Light Front Quantization

We survey recent progress in calculating properties of the electron and hadrons within the Basis Light Front Quantization (BLFQ) approach. We include applications to electromagnetic and strong scattering processes in relativistic heavy ion collisions. We present an initial investigation into the glueball states by applying BLFQ with multigluon sectors, introducing future research possibilities on multi-quark and multi-gluon systems.

Exact Solutions to the Fermion Propagator Schwinger-Dyson Equation in Minkowski space with on-shell Renormalization for Quenched QED

With the introduction of a spectral representation, the Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) for the fermion propagator is formulated in Minkowski space in QED. After imposing the on-shell renormalization conditions, analytic solutions for the fermion propagator spectral functions are obtained in four dimensions with a renormalizable version of the Gauge Technique anzatz for the fermion-photon vertex in the quenched approximation in the Landau gauge. Despite the limitations of this model, having an explicit solution provides a guiding example of the fermion propagator with the correct analytic structure. The Padé approximation for the spectral functions is also investigated.

How gauge covariance of the fermion and boson propagators in QED constrain the effective fermion-boson vertex

We derive the gauge covariance requirement imposed on the QED fermion-photon three-point function within the framework of a spectral representation for fermion propagators. When satisfied, such requirement ensures solutions to the fermion propagator Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) in any covariant gauge with arbitrary numbers of spacetime dimensions to be consistent with the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation (LKFT). The general result has been verified by the special cases of three and four dimensions. Additionally, we present the condition that ensures the vacuum polarization is independent of the gauge parameter. As an illustration, we show how the Gauge Technique dimensionally regularized in 4D does not satisfy the covariance requirement.

Gauge covariance of the fermion Schwinger-Dyson equation in QED

Any practical application of the Schwinger-Dyson equations to the study of $n$-point Green's functions of a field theory requires truncations, the best known being finite order perturbation theory. Strong coupling studies require a different approach. In the case of QED, gauge covariance is a powerful constraint. By using a spectral representation for the massive fermion propagator in QED, we are able to show that the constraints imposed by the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformations are linear operations on the spectral densities. Here we formally define these group operations and show with a couple of examples how in practice they provide a straightforward way to test the gauge covariance of any viable truncation of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion 2-point function.

Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation for the fermion propagator in QED in arbitrary dimensions

We explore the dependence of fermion propagators on the covariant gauge fixing parameter in quantum electrodynamics (QED) with the number of spacetime dimensions kept explicit. Gauge covariance is controlled by the the Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation (LKFT). Utilizing its group nature, the LKFT for a fermion propagator in Minkowski space is solved exactly. The special scenario of 3D is used to test claims made for general cases. When renormalized correctly, a simplification of the LKFT in 4D has been achieved with the help of fractional calculus.
