Foundry CMOS platform for multimodal quantum materials characterization

Quantum materials experiments increasingly rely on microwave, electrical, thermal, optical, and structural probes, but these capabilities are typically assembled from custom hardware that limits reproducibility and scalability. Here we show that a commercial 65-nm CMOS process can be repurposed as a passive, foundry-manufacturable characterization platform by functionally partitioning its metal stack into microwave, thermal, and electrical subsystems within a 1 mm2 footprint. The integrated RF architecture enables cryogenic magnetic susceptibility measurements of Fe3GeTe2 heterostructures at 1.75 K without sample-specific fabrication. We further demonstrate NV-center optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) with >20% contrast at 4-9 dBm microwave power, reducing power requirements by 20-25 dB relative to conventional antenna-based approaches while maintaining sensitivities of 2-3 uT/sqrt(Hz). We additionally confirm compatibility with in-situ electron-beam imaging, showing no measurable degradation in image quality upon device operation. These results establish a scalable, foundry-manufacturable platform for multimodal quantum sensing and materials characterization.

Quantum light generation with ultra-high spatial resolution in 2D semiconductors via ultra-low energy electron irradiation

Single photon emitters (SPEs) are building blocks of quantum technologies. Defect engineering of 2D materials is ideal to fabricate SPEs, wherein spatially deterministic and quality-preserving fabrication methods are critical for integration into quantum devices and cavities. Existing methods use combination of strain and electron irradiation, or ion irradiation, which make fabrication complex, and limited by surrounding lattice damage. Here, we utilise only ultra-low energy electron beam irradiation (5 keV) to create dilute defect density in hBN-encapsulated monolayer MoS2, with ultra-high spatial resolution (< 50 nm, extendable to 10 nm). Cryogenic photoluminescence spectra exhibit sharp defect peaks, following power-law for finite density of single defects, and characteristic Zeeman splitting for MoS2 defect complexes. The sharp peaks have low spectral jitter (< 200 μeV), and are tuneable with gate-voltage and electron beam energy. Use of low-momentum electron irradiation, ease of processing, and high spatial resolution, will disrupt deterministic creation of high-quality SPEs.

Propagation of slow electromagnetic disturbances in plasma

Electromagnetic (EM) waves/disturbances are typically the best means to understand and analyze an ionized medium like plasma. However, the propagation of electromagnetic waves with frequency lower than the plasma frequency is prohibited by the freely moving charges of the plasma. In dense plasmas though the plasma frequency can be typically quite high, EM sources at such higher frequency are not easily available. It is, therefore, of interest to seek possibilities wherein a low frequency (lower than the plasma frequency) EM disturbance propagates inside a plasma. This is possible in the context of magnetized plasmas. However, in order to have a magnetized plasma response one requires a strong external magnetic field. In this manuscript we demonstrate that the nonlinearity of the plasma medium can also aid the propagation of a slow EM wave inside plasma. Certain interesting applications of the propagation of such slow electromagnetic pulse through plasma is also discussed.

Propagation of Electron Magnetohydrodynamic structures in a 2-D inhomogeneous plasma

The fully three dimensional governing equations in the electron magnetohydrodynamic (EMHD) regime for a plasma with inhomogeneous density is obtained. These equations in the two dimensional (2-D) limit can be cast in terms of the evolution of two coupled scalar fields. The nonlinear simulations for the two dimensional case are carried out to understand the propagation of EMHD magnetic structures in the presence of inhomogeneity. A novel effect related to trapping of dipolar magnetic structures in the high density plasma region in the EMHD regime is observed. The interpretation of this phenomena as well as its relevance to the problem of hot spot generation in the context of fast ignition is presented.
