Comprehensive scaling laws across animals, microorganisms and plants

Scaling laws illuminate Nature's fundamental biological principles and guide bioinspired materials and structural designs. In simple cases they are based on the fundamental principle that all laws of nature remain unchanged (i.e., invariant) under a change of units. A more general framework is a change of variables for the governing laws that takes all equations, boundary, and interaction conditions into themselves. We consider an accepted macroscale system of partial differential equations including coupled fluid dynamics, nonlinear elasticity, and rigid body mechanics for a complex organism. We show that there is a set of scaling laws where length, time, density, elastic modulus, viscosity, and gravitational constant undergo nontrivial scaling (Table 1). We compare these results to extensive data sets mined from the literature on beating frequency of flying, swimming, and running animals, speed of bacteria, insects, fish, mammals and reptiles, leg stiffness of mammals, and modulus of elasticity of plants. The uniform agreement of the scaling laws with the dynamics of fauna, flora, and microorganisms supports the dominating role of coupled nonlinear elasticity and fluid dynamics in evolutionary development. We conclude with predictions for some prehistoric cases for which observations are unavailable.

Robot motor learning shows emergence of frequency-modulated, robust swimming with an invariant Strouhal-number

Fish locomotion emerges from a diversity of interactions among deformable structures, surrounding fluids and neuromuscular activations, i.e., fluid-structure interactions (FSI) controlled by fish's motor systems. Previous studies suggested that such motor-controlled FSI may possess embodied traits. However, their implications in motor learning, neuromuscular control, gait generation, and swimming performance remain to be uncovered. Using robot models, we studied how swimming behaviours emerged from the FSI and the embodied traits. We developed modular robots with various designs and used Central Pattern Generators (CPGs) to control the torque acting on robot body. We used reinforcement learning to learn CPG parameters to maximize the swimming speed. The results showed that motor frequency converged faster than other parameters, and the emergent swimming gaits were robust against disruptions applied to motor control. For all robots and frequencies tested, swimming speed was proportional to the mean undulation velocity of body and caudal-fin combined, yielding an invariant, undulation-based Strouhal number. The Strouhal number also revealed two fundamental classes of undulatory swimming in both biological and robotic fishes. The robot actuators also demonstrated diverse functions as motors, virtual springs, and virtual masses. These results provide novel insights into the embodied traits of motor-controlled FSI for fish-inspired locomotion.

Soft Phonon Mode Dynamics in Aurivillius Type Structures

We report the dynamics of soft phonon modes and their role towards the various structural transformations in Aurivillius materials by employing terahertz frequency-domain spectroscopy, atomic pair distribution function analysis, and first-principles calculations. We have chosen Bi4Ti3O12 as a model system and identified soft phonon modes associated with the paraelectric tetragonal to the ferroelectric monoclinic transition. Three soft phonon modes have been discovered which exhibit a strong temperature dependence. We have determined that the anharmonicity in Bi-O bonds plays a significant role in phonon softening and that Bi cations play an important role in the emergence of ferroelectricity.

Exactly solvable model of the ferroelectrics hysteresis loops control by the external electric field

The kinetic theory of switching processes in crystalline ferroelectric materials under the influence of a variable external electric field is formulated. The basic equations are derived and their exact analytical solution at arbitrary time-dependent external field are obtained. Connection between the hysteresis loops shape and variable external electric field parameters is investigated numerically. The numerical results were found to be in excellent agreement with the experiments. PACS: 77.80.Fm, 77.80.Dj, 77.80.-e Keywords: ferroelectrics, switching processes, hysteresis curves, polarization
