Non Fermi liquid signatures across strain engineered metal-insulator transition in line-graph lattices

Controlling the properties and thus the functionalities of correlated electron systems via externally tunable perturbations has always remained a cherished goal in quantum condensed matter physics. Recently, straintronics has proved to be one such external control which can dictate the quantum phases and transitions in materials via the reconstruction of their electronic band structure. A particularly intriguing scenario arises in the context of flat band line-graph lattices wherein straintronics is found to bring forth non trivial phase transitions. This paper reports the phase transitions and thermal scales across the Lieb/Kagome interconversion in the electronic interaction-strain-temperature space. Based on the thermodynamic, spectroscopic and transport signatures across the strain tuned interconversion of these line-graph lattices we have mapped out the low temperature phases and thermal transition scales, numerically determined using non perturbative calculations. While at the low temperatures, interaction-strain plane is spanned by magnetically correlated insulators, flat band induced weak transiently localized insulators and non Fermi liquid metallic phases, thermal fluctuations aid in to stabilize coexistent magnetic correlations. Apart from quantifying the magnetic transition scales in this system our results on the spectroscopic and transport signatures distill the strain tuned metal-insulator transition and crossover scales which exhibit variable transport scaling exponents.

Straintronics across Lieb-Kagome interconversion and variable transport scaling exponents

We propose a novel protocol of low-temperature, strain-tuned re-entrant metal-insulator transition and crossover between strongly correlated line-graph lattices (Lieb and Kagome). Using a non-perturbative numerical approach, we demonstrate for the first time that an applied shear strain stabilizes a metallic phase cradled in between a gapped magnetic insulator and a gapless flat band localized insulator, facilitating the Lieb/Kagome interconversion. Our results on transport signatures exhibit variable scaling exponents for electrical resistivity and optical conductivity, providing clear evidence of non-Fermi liquid physics. We also define a strain-dependent thermal scale to quantify the crossover between the non-Fermi liquid and bad metal phases.

Kagome Hubbard model away from the strong coupling limit: Flat band localization and non Fermi liquid signatures

Taking cue from the recent experimental realization of metallic phases in Kagome materials we report the low temperature signatures and thermal scales of Kagome metals and insulators, determined in the framework of the Kagome Hubbard model, using a non perturbative numerical approach. In contrast to the existing consensus we establish a flat band localized insulator in the weak coupling regime which crosses over to a non Fermi liquid (NFL) metal at intermediate coupling, followed by a first order metal-Mott insulator transition in the strong coupling regime. We provide the first accurate estimates of the thermal scales of this model and analyze the NFL phases in terms of resilient quasiparticles and short range magnetic correlations. With our unprecedented access to the low temperature phases and sufficiently large system sizes, we provide the essential benchmarks for the prospective experiments on the Kagome metal and insulators in terms of their thermodynamic, spectroscopic and transport signatures.

Spin-selective metal insulator transition in two dimensions

The phenomenon of Anderson localization wherein non-interacting electrons are localized by quenched impurities is a subject matter that has been extremely well studied. However, localization transition under the combined influence of interaction and quenched disorder is less well understood. In this context we study the localization transition in a two-dimensional Hubbard model under the influence of a spin-selective disorder i.e, disorder which is operational on just one of the spin-species. The model is analyzed by laying recourse to a Quantum Monte Carlo based scheme. Using this approach we show the possibility of a metal-insulator transition. However, we will show that this metal-insulator transition is extremely sensitive to the filling-fraction inherent in the system.

Tuning a random field mechanism in a frustrated magnet

We study the influence of spinless impurities on a frustrated magnet featuring a spin-density wave (stripe) phase by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate that the interplay between the impurities and an order parameter that breaks a real-space symmetry triggers the emergence of a random-field mechanism which destroys the stripe-ordered phase. Importantly, the strength of the emerging random fields can be tuned by the repulsion between the impurity atoms; they vanish for perfect anticorrelations between neighboring impurities. This provides a novel way of controlling the phase diagram of a many-particle system. In addition, we also investigate the effects of the impurities on the character of the phase transitions between the stripe-ordered, ferromagnetic, and paramagnetic phases.
