On the estimation of the current value of the cosmological constant

We advance the viewpoint that only relevant modes of the vacuum fluctuations, namely, with wavelengths conditioned by the size, homogeneity, geometry and topology of the Universe, do contribute into the cosmological constant. A formula is derived which relates the cosmological constant with the size of the Universe and the three fundamental constants: the velocity of light, Planck and Newton gravitational constants. Then the current value of the cosmological constant remarkably agrees with the value indicated by distant supernovae observations, i.e. is of the order of the critical density. Thus the cosmological constant had to be smaller than the matter density in the past and will be bigger in the future.

On the Dyadosphere of Black Hole

Basic energy requirements of Gamma Ray Burst(GRB) sources can be easily accounted for by a pair creation process occurring in the "Dyadosphere" of a Black Hole endowed with an electromagnetic field (abbreviated to EMBH for "electromagnetic Black Hole"). This includes the recent observations of GRB971214 by Kulkarni et al. The "Dyadosphere" is defined as the region outside the horizon of an EMBH where the electromagnetic field exceeds the critical value for e^+ e^- pair production. In a very short time $\sim O(hbar mc^2}), very large numbers of pairs are created there. Further evolution then leads naturally to a relativistically expanding pair-electromagnetic-pulse (PEM-pulse). Specific examples of Dyadosphere parameters are given for 10 and 10^5 solar mass EMBH's. This process does occur for EMBH with charge-to-mass ratio larger than 2.210^{-5} and strictly smaller than one. From a fundamental point of view, this process represents the first mechanism proved capable of extracting large amounts of energy from a Black Hole with an extremely high efficiency (close to 100%).

The role of the screen factor in GRBs

We derive the screen factor for the radiation flux from an optically thick plasma of electron-positron pairs and photons, created by vacuum polarization process around a black hole endowed with electromagnetic structure.

The (11112) model on a 1+1 dimensional lattice

We study the chiral gauge model (11112) of four left-movers and one right-mover with strong interactions in the 1+1 dimensional lattice. Exact computations of relevant $S$-matrix elements demonstrate a loophole that so constructed model and its dynamics can possibly evade the ``no-go'' theorem of Nielsen and Ninomiya.

On fermionic vacuum energy

We quantitatively compute the rate and spectrum of spontaneous photon emissions, caused by the vacuum decaying when an external magnetic field is introduced. The spectrum of spontaneous photon emissions shows the energy-momentum-dependency in the low-energy region and in the high energy region, is respectively similar to the Rayleigh-Jeans part and the Wien part of the spectrum of the black-body radiation. However, the energy-momentum of spontaneous photon emissions is quantized, analogous to the Wigner spectrum. This provides quantitative results for experimental testes.

The elementary spike produced by a pure $e^+e^-$ pair-electromagnetic pulse from a Black Hole: The PEM Pulse

In the framework of the model that uses black holes endowed with electromagnetic structure (EMBH) as the energy source, we study how an elementary spike appears to the detectors. We consider the simplest possible case of a pulse produced by a pure $e^+e^-$ pair-electro-magnetic plasma, the PEM pulse, in the absence of any baryonic matter. The resulting time profiles show a {\em Fast-Rise-Exponential-Decay} shape, followed by a power-law tail. This is obtained without any special fitting procedure, but only by fixing the energetics of the process taking place in a given EMBH of selected mass, varying in the range from 10 to $10^3$ $M_\odot$ and considering the relativistic effects to be expected in an electron-positron plasma gradually reaching transparency. Special attention is given to the contributions from all regimes with Lorentz $γ$ factor varying from $γ=1$ to $γ=10^4$ in a few hundreds of the PEM pulse travel time. Although the main goal of this paper is to obtain the elementary spike intensity as a function of the arrival time, and its observed duration, some qualitative considerations are also presented regarding the expected spectrum and on its departure from the thermal one. The results of this paper will be comparable, when data will become available, with a subfamily of particularly short GRBs not followed by any afterglow. They can also be propedeutical to the study of longer bursts in presence of baryonic matter currently observed in GRBs.

Extracting energies from the vacuum

We present and study a possible mechanism of extracting energies from the vacuum by external classical fields. Taking a constant magnetic field as an example, we discuss why and how the vacuum energy can be released in the context of quantum field theories. In addition, we give a theoretical computation showing how much vacuum energies can be released. The possibilities of experimentally detecting such a vacuum-energy releasing are discussed.

The standard model and parity conservation

On the basis of previous work on chiral gauged fermions on a lattice, we discuss the lattice-regularization of the standard model by introducing two Weyl fields interacting with quarks and leptons. These interactions form massive bound states to gauge-invariantly decouple doublers at high energies and these bound states dissolve into their constituents at low energies. No any hard spontaneous symmetry breakings occur at the lattice scale π/a. As a consequence, the gauge symmetries of the standard model are realized by both massive vectorlike spectra at high energies and massless chiral spectra at low energies. Such a scenario is consistent with the gauge-anomaly cancelation, flavor-singlet anomaly and Witten's anomaly. These studies predict that the parity symmetry must be restored at high energies.

An illustration of chiral fermions on a 1+1 dimensional lattice

The vectorlike doubling of low-energy excitations is in fact a natural consequence of the pair-production around the zero-energy (E=0) due to the quantum field fluctuations of the lattice regularized vacuum. On the 1+1 dimensional lattice, we study an anomaly-free chiral model (11112) of four left-movers and one right-mover with strong interactions. Exact computations of relevant S-matrices illustrate that for high-momentum states, a negative energy-gap (E<0) develops; the bound state and its constituents, which have the same quantum numbers but opposite chiralities, fill the same energy-state so that chiral symmetries are preserved; for low-momentum states, the negative energy-gap vanishes and the bound state dissolves into its constituents near zero energy. As a consequence of the gauge-anomaly cancellation and the index theorem for flavor-singlet anomalies, the net number of zero-modes pushed down into and pumped out from the zero-energy level by the gauge field is zero.

Chiral gauged fermions on a lattice

The chiral fermion model with local multifermion interactions proposed in Nucl. Phys. B486 (1997) 282 and Phys. Rev. D61 (2000) 054502 processes an exact SU_L(2) chiral gauge symmetry and SU_L(2) by U_R(1) chiral flavour symmetry on a lattice and a plausible scaling region for the target chiral gauge theory in the continuum limit. Following the previous analysis of massive and massless fermion spectra in the scaling region, we compute the coupling vertices between gauge field and fermions by the strong multifermion coupling expansion and analytical continuation of these vertex functions in the energy-momentum space. We show a peculiar scenario that a massless fermion is SU_L(2)-chirally gauged in the low energy and 15 non-degenerate massive Dirac fermions are SU_L(2)-vectorially gauged at the lattice scale O(1/a). The Ward identities associated to the chiral gauge symmetry are realized by both the massless chiral fermion and massive Dirac fermions. These Ward identities protect the perturbative calculations in the small gauge coupling from hard gauge-symmetry breakings and lead to the normal gauge-invariant renormalization prescription. The vacuum functional is perturbatively computed by a continuum regularization scheme in 16 edges of Brillouin zones. We achieve the correct form of the gauge anomaly and U_L(1) fermion-flavour singlet anomaly with the soft chiral symmetry breaking scale that is much smaller than the lattice scale. The residual breakings of chiral gauge symmetry after the gauge anomaly cancellation are eliminated in the normal gauge-invarinant renormalization prescription. We discuss the consistency of the scenario and the reasons for it to work for perturbative and non-perturbative gauge field.

On the pair-electromagnetic pulse from an electromagnetic Black Hole surrounded by a Baryonic Remnant

The interaction of an expanding Pair-Electromagnetic pulse (PEM pulse) with a shell of baryonic matter surrounding a Black Hole with electromagnetic structure (EMBH) is analyzed for selected values of the baryonic mass at selected distances well outside the dyadosphere of an EMBH. The dyadosphere, the region in which a super critical field exists for the creation of electron-positron pairs, is here considered in the special case of a Reissner-Nordstrom geometry. The interaction of the PEM pulse with the baryonic matter is described using a simplified model of a slab of constant thickness in the laboratory frame (constant-thickness approximation) as well as performing the integration of the general relativistic hydrodynamical equations. The validation of the constant-thickness approximation, already presented in a previous paper Ruffini, et al.(1999) for a PEM pulse in vacuum, is here generalized to the presence of baryonic matter. It is found that for a baryonic shell of mass-energy less than 1% of the total energy of the dyadosphere, the constant-thickness approximation is in excellent agreement with full general relativistic computations. The approximation breaks down for larger values of the baryonic shell mass, however such cases are of less interest for observed Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). On the basis of numerical computations of the slab model for PEM pulses, we describe (i) the properties of relativistic evolution of a PEM pulse colliding with a baryonic shell; (ii) the details of the expected emission energy and observed temperature of the associated GRBs for a given value of the EMBH mass; 10^3 solar masses, and for baryonic mass-energies in the range 10^{-8} to 10^{-2} the total energy of the dyadosphere.

A further study of the possible scaling region of lattice chiral fermions

In the possible scaling region for an SU(2) lattice chiral fermion advocated in {\it Nucl. Phys.} B486 (1997) 282, no hard spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs and doublers are gauge-invariantly decoupled via mixing with composite three-fermion-states that are formed by local multifermion interactions. However the strong coupling expansion breaks down due to no ``static limit'' for the low-energy limit ($pa\sim 0$). In both neutral and charged channels, we further analyze relevant truncated Green functions of three-fermion-operators by the strong coupling expansion and analytical continuation of these Green functions in the momentum space. It is shown that in the low-energy limit, these relevant truncated Green functions of three-fermion-states with the ``wrong'' chiralities positively vanish due to the generalized form factors (the wave-function renormalizations) of these composite three-fermion-states vanishing as O((pa)^4) for $pa\sim 0$. This strongly implies that the composite three-fermion-states with ``wrong'' chirality are ``decoupled'' in this limit and the low-energy spectrum is chiral, as a consequence, chiral gauge symmetries can be exactly preserved.

On the Pair Electromagnetic Pulse of a Black Hole with Electromagnetic Structure

We study the relativistically expanding electron-positron pair plasma formed by the process of vacuum polarization around an electromagnetic black hole (EMBH). Such processes can occur for EMBH's with mass all the way up to $6\cdot 10^5M_\odot$. Beginning with a idealized model of a Reissner-Nordstrom EMBH with charge to mass ratio $ξ=0.1$, numerical hydrodynamic calculations are made to model the expansion of the pair-electromagnetic pulse (PEM pulse) to the point that the system is transparent to photons. Three idealized special relativistic models have been compared and contrasted with the results of the numerically integrated general relativistic hydrodynamic equations. One of the three models has been validated: a PEM pulse of constant thickness in the laboratory frame is shown to be in excellent agreement with results of the general relativistic hydrodynamic code. It is remarkable that this precise model, starting from the fundamental parameters of the EMBH, leads uniquely to the explicit evaluation of the parameters of the PEM pulse, including the energy spectrum and the astrophysically unprecedented large Lorentz factors (up to $6\cdot 10^3$ for a $10^3 M_{\odot}$ EMBH). The observed photon energy at the peak of the photon spectrum at the moment of photon decoupling is shown to range from 0.1 MeV to 4 MeV as a function of the EMBH mass. Correspondingly the total energy in photons is in the range of $10^{52}$ to $10^{54}$ ergs, consistent with observed gamma-ray bursts. In these computations we neglect the presence of baryonic matter which will be the subject of forthcoming publications.

On Evolution of the Pair-Electromagnetic Pulse of a Charge Black Hole

Using hydrodynamic computer codes, we study the possible patterns of relativistic expansion of an enormous pair-electromagnetic-pulse (P.E.M. pulse); a hot, high density plasma composed of photons, electron-positron pairs and baryons deposited near a charged black hole (EMBH). On the bases of baryon-loading and energy conservation, we study the bulk Lorentz factor of expansion of the P.E.M. pulse by both numerical and analytical methods.

The dyadosphere of black holes and gamma-ray bursts

The "dyadosphere" has been defined (Ruffini, Preparata et al.) as the region outside the horizon of a black hole endowed with an electromagnetic field (abbreviated to EMBH for "electromagnetic black hole") where the electromagnetic field exceeds the critical value, predicted by Heisenberg & Euler for $e^+ e^-$ pair production. In a very short time ($\sim O(\hbar/(mc^2))$), a very large number of pairs is created there. We here give limits on the EMBH parameters leading to a Dyadosphere for $10M_{\odot}$ and $10^5M_{\odot}$ EMBH's, and give as well the pair densities as functions of the radial coordinate. We here assume that the pairs reach thermodynamic equilibrium with a photon gas and estimate the average energy per pair as a function of the EMBH mass. These data give the initial conditions for the analysis of an enormous pair-electromagnetic-pulse or "P.E.M. pulse" which naturally leads to relativistic expansion. Basic energy requirements for gamma ray bursts (GRB), including GRB971214 recently observed at $z=3.4$, can be accounted for by processes occurring in the dyadosphere. In this letter we do not address the problem of forming either the EMBH or the dyadosphere: we establish some inequalities which must be satisfied during their formation process.

On the Ground State of Quantum Gravity

In order to gain insight into the possible Ground State of Quantized Einstein's Gravity, we have devised a variational calculation of the energy of the quantum gravitational field in an open space, as measured by an asymptotic observer living in an asymptotically flat space-time. We find that for Quantum Gravity (QG) it is energetically favourable to perform its quantum fluctuations not upon flat space-time but around a ``gas'' of wormholes, whose size is the Planck length $a_p$ ($a_p\simeq 10^{-33}$cm). As a result, assuming such configuration to be a good approximation to the true Ground State of Quantum Gravity, space-time, the arena of physical reality, turns out to be well described by Wheeler's Quantum Foam and adequately modeled by a space-time lattice with lattice constant $a_p$, the Planck lattice.

Whether composite fermion states with ``wrong'' chiralities dissolve into cuts

In the possible scaling region for lattice chiral fermions advocated in hep-lat/9609037, no hard spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs and doublers are gauge-invariantly decoupled via mixing with composite three-fermion-states. However the strong coupling expansion breaks down due to no ``static limit'' for the low-energy limit ($p\sim 0$). We further analyze relevant Green functions of three-fermion-operators. It is shown that in the low-energy limit, the propagators of three-fermion-states with the ``wrong'' chiralities positively vanish due to the generalized form factors (the wave-function renormalizations) of these composite states vanishing as $O(p^4)$. This strongly implies that three-fermion-states with ``wrong'' chirality are ``decoupled'' in this limit.

On A Possible Ground State for Quantum Gravity

A variational calculation is presented of the ADM-energy of the quantized gravitational field around a wormhole solution of the classical Einstein's equations. One finds the energy of such state to be in general lower than the perturbative ground state, in which the quantized gravity field fluctuates around flat (Euclidean) space-time. As a result the strong indication emerges that a gas (or a lattice) of wormholes of Planck mass and average distance $l_p$, the Planck length, may be a good approximation of the Ground State of Quantum Gravity, some implications of which are reviewed.
