Exploring Sustainability in Scientific Software through Code Quality & Test Coverage Metrics

Context: Scientific open-source software (SciOSS) plays a foundational role in research and engineering, yet its long-term sustainability has often been overlooked and remains a significant concern. Objective: This study investigates the long-term sustainability of SciOSS through code and test quality metrics. Method: We analyze CASS Software Portfolio projects, classifying them by sustainability and comparing their code structure, test coverage, and links between code quality and testing across the dataset. Results: Sustainable projects show higher, more consistent test coverage and clearer code-test correlations, while unsustainable ones show weaker patterns. Overall, test coverage is low in scientific software, and high complexity and coupling reduce testability. Conclusion: In this study, we present a practical, data-driven approach for assessing sustainability in scientific software, offering a foundation for evaluating long-term software health and supporting future efforts in quality assurance and sustainability monitoring.

Beyond Pass/Fail: The Story of Learning-Based Testing

Learning-Based Testing (LBT) merges learning and testing processes to achieve both testing and behavioral adequacy. LBT utilizes active learning to infer the model of the System Under Test (SUT), enabling scalability for large and complex programs by requiring only a minimal set of initial test cases. The core principle of LBT is that the SUT's behavior can be thoroughly inferred by progressively generating test cases and subjecting the SUT to testing, thereby ensuring comprehensive testing. Despite being in its early stages, LBT has a solid foundation of theoretical research demonstrating its efficacy in testing both procedural and reactive programs. This paper provides a systematic literature review of various LBT implementations across different program types and evaluates the current state of research in this field. We explore diverse theoretical frameworks, existing tools, and libraries within the LBT domain to illustrate the concept's evolution and current research status. Additionally, we examine case studies involving the application of LBT tools in industrial settings, highlighting their potential and effectiveness in commercial software testing. This systematic literature review aims to offer researchers a comprehensive perspective on the inception and development of LBT, presenting it as a promising technique in software testing. By unveiling LBT's underutilized potential, this paper seeks to significantly benefit the practitioners and research community.

Introducing Ensemble Machine Learning Algorithms for Automatic Test Case Generation using Learning Based Testing

Ensemble methods are powerful machine learning algorithms that combine multiple models to enhance prediction capabilities and reduce generalization errors. However, their potential to generate effective test cases for fault detection in a System Under Test (SUT) has not been extensively explored. This study aims to systematically investigate the combination of ensemble methods and base classifiers for model inference in a Learning Based Testing (LBT) algorithm to generate fault-detecting test cases for SUTs as a proof of concept. We conduct a series of experiments on functions, generating effective test cases using different ensemble methods and classifier combinations for model inference in our proposed LBT method. We then compare the test suites based on their mutation score. The results indicate that Boosting ensemble methods show overall better performance in generating effective test cases, and the proposed method is performing better than random generation. This analysis helps determine the appropriate ensemble methods for various types of functions. By incorporating ensemble methods into the LBT, this research contributes to the understanding of how to leverage ensemble methods for effective test case generation.
