Chart-RL: Policy Optimization Reinforcement Learning for Enhanced Visual Reasoning in Chart Question Answering with Vision Language Models

The recent advancements in Vision Language Models (VLMs) have demonstrated progress toward true intelligence requiring robust reasoning capabilities. Beyond pattern recognition, linguistic reasoning must integrate with visual comprehension, particularly for Chart Question Answering (CQA) tasks involving complex data visualizations. Current VLMs face significant limitations in CQA, including imprecise numerical extraction, difficulty interpreting implicit visual relationships, and inadequate attention mechanisms for capturing spatial relationships in charts. In this work, we address these challenges by presenting Chart-RL, a novel reinforcement learning framework that enhances VLMs chart understanding through feedback-driven policy optimization of visual perception and logical inference. Our key innovation includes a comprehensive framework integrating Reinforcement Learning (RL) from Policy Optimization techniques along with adaptive reward functions, that demonstrates superior performance compared to baseline foundation models and competitive results against larger state-of-the-art architectures. We also integrated Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning through Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) in the RL framework that only requires single GPU configurations while preserving performance integrity. We conducted extensive benchmarking across open-source, proprietary, and state-of-the-art closed-source models utilizing the ChartQAPro dataset. The RL fine-tuned Qwen3-VL-4B-Instruct model achieved an answer accuracy of 0.634, surpassing the 0.580 accuracy of the Qwen3-VL-8B-Instruct foundation model despite utilizing half the parameter count, while simultaneously reducing inference latency from 31 seconds to 9 seconds.

LLM-Assisted Logic Rule Learning: Scaling Human Expertise for Time Series Anomaly Detection

Time series anomaly detection is critical for supply chain management to take proactive operations, but faces challenges: classical unsupervised anomaly detection based on exploiting data patterns often yields results misaligned with business requirements and domain knowledge, while manual expert analysis cannot scale to millions of products in the supply chain. We propose a framework that leverages large language models (LLMs) to systematically encode human expertise into interpretable, logic-based rules for detecting anomaly patterns in supply chain time series data. Our approach operates in three stages: 1) LLM-based labeling of training data instructed by domain knowledge, 2) automated generation and iterative improvements of symbolic rules through LLM-driven optimization, and 3) rule augmentation with business-relevant anomaly categories supported by LLMs to enhance interpretability. The experiment results showcase that our approach outperforms the unsupervised learning methods in both detection accuracy and interpretability. Furthermore, compared to direct LLM deployment for time series anomaly detection, our approach provides consistent, deterministic results with low computational latency and cost, making it ideal for production deployment. The proposed framework thus demonstrates how LLMs can bridge the gap between scalable automation and expert-driven decision-making in operational settings.

LTE Standard-Compliant D2D Communication: Software-defined Radio Implementation and Evaluation

In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of D2D communication functionality for LTE. To our knowledge, this is the first such implementation that is compliant with the LTE Release 12 standard. In this paper, we design and demonstrate an experiment on mode selection between infrastructure mode and D2D communication mode in LTE networks. We implement our system on a software-defined radio SDR testbed, augmenting the open-source LTE eNodeB and UE implementation provided by the srsLTE software suite. Our measurements demonstrate the cell extension capabilities of D2D and quantify the SNR and throughput obtained by a subscriber when directly served by the eNodeB and when provided connectivity through the relay UE. Our implementation of sidelink, relaying, and mode selection functionality enables experimentation and prototyping of D2D communication that can assist in standardization, research, and development.
