Weak Decays, CKM and CP Violation

I review several topics pertaining to Weak decays of b and c quarks, including measurements of Vcb, |Vub/Vcb|, fDs and b->s gamma.

Physics Results from RICH Detectors

RICH detectors have become extraordinarily useful. Results include measurement of solar neutrino rates, evidence for neutrino oscillations, measurement of TeV gamma-rays from gravitational sources, properties of QCD, charm production and decay, and measurement of the CKM matrix elements Vcs, Vcb and Vub. A new value |Vub/Vcb|=0.087+/-0.012 is determined.

Rare Non-hadronic b Decays

This paper summarizes current results for rare non-hadronic b decay processes. The world average Br(b -> s gamma)=(3.14 +/-0.48)x10^(-4) is in agreement with the standard model prediction. Upper limits on b-> s l^+ l^- and b -> l^+ l^- are also given. Finally B^- -> l^- nu upper limits are presented as well as the world average value of (255+/- 21 +/- 28) MeV for f_{Ds} from D_s^+ -> l^+ nu decay rate measurements.

THE Goals and Techniques of BTeV and LHC-B

BTeV and LHC-B are experiments being proposed to study $b$ and $c$ quark decays in hadron-hadron collisions with the aims to look for new phenomena beyond the Standard Model and to measure Standard Model parameters including CKM elements and decay constants. The physics goals, required detection techniques and simulations will be discussed.

The Btev Program

A brief description is given of BTeV a proposed program at the Fermilab collider sited at the C0 intersection region. The main goals are measurement of mixing, CP violation and rare decays in both the $b$ and charm systems. The detector is a two arm forward-backward spectrometer capable of triggering on detached vertices and dileptons, and possessing excellent particle identification, electron, photon and muon detection.

Prospects for B-Physics in the Next Decade

In these lectures I review what has been learned from studies of b-quark decays, including semileptonic decays ($V_{ub}$ and $V_{cb}$), $B^o-\overline{B}^o$ mixing and rare B decays. Then a discussion on CP violation follows, which leads to a summary of plans for future experiments and what is expected to be learned from them. $B_s$ Mixing via $ψK^*$

The decay mode $B_s\toψ\overline{K}^*$ is suggested as a very good way to measure the $B_s$ mixing parameter $x_s$. These decays can be gathered using a $ψ\to\ell^+\ell^-$ trigger. This final state has a well resolved four track decay vertex, useful for good time resolution and background rejection.

CLEO III, A Dectector To Measure Rare $B$ Decays and CP Violation

The symmetric $e^+e^-$ collider CESR is undergoing a series of upgrades allowing for luminosities in excess of $2\times 10^{33}$cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$. The most important goals of the upgrade are precision measurement of standard model parameters $V_{cb}$, $V_{ub}$, $V_{td}/V_{ts}$, $f_{D_s}$, and searching for CP violation and standard model violations in rare $B$ decays. A new detector upgrade, called CLEO III, has started which includes a new silicon-wire drift chamber tracking system and a Ring Imaging Cherenkov Detector, RICH, using a LiF radiator and CH$_4$-TEA gas based photon detector.

Rare b Decays

Rare b decays provide a unique opportunity to measure Standard Model parameters and probe beyond the Standard Model. We review here the experimentalprogress made in measuring these decays, and the importance of future measurements, including the possible observation of CP violation.
