Solitary beam propagation in a nonlinear optical resonator enables high-efficiency pulse compression and mode self-cleaning

Generating intense ultrashort pulses with high-quality spatial modes is crucial for ultrafast and strong-field science. This can be accomplished by controlling propagation of femtosecond pulses under the influence of Kerr nonlinearity and achieving stable propagation with high intensity. In this work, we propose that the generation of spatial solitons in periodic layered Kerr media can provide an optimum condition for supercontinuum generation and pulse compression using multiple thin plates. With both the experimental and theoretical investigations, we successfully identify these solitary modes and reveal a universal relationship between the beam size and the critical nonlinear phase. Space-time coupling is shown to strongly influence the spectral, spatial and temporal profiles of femtosecond pulses. Taking advantage of the unique characters of these solitary modes, we demonstrate single-stage supercontinuum generation and compression of femtosecond pulses from initially 170 fs down to 22 fs with an efficiency ~90%. We also provide evidence of efficient mode self-cleaning which suggests rich spatial-temporal self-organization processes of laser beams in a nonlinear resonator.

Universal Decompositional Semantic Parsing

We introduce a transductive model for parsing into Universal Decompositional Semantics (UDS) representations, which jointly learns to map natural language utterances into UDS graph structures and annotate the graph with decompositional semantic attribute scores. We also introduce a strong pipeline model for parsing into the UDS graph structure, and show that our transductive parser performs comparably while additionally performing attribute prediction. By analyzing the attribute prediction errors, we find the model captures natural relationships between attribute groups.

A Sterile Neutrino Search at compact materials irradiation facility

The compact material irradiation facility (CMIF) is a current project in China that will provide a compact deuteron-beryllium neutron source. The target of this facility will be an intense and compact Isotope Decay-At-Rest (IsoDAR) neutrino source. In this paper, we propose to test the sterile neutrino hypothesis using CMIF as the neutrino source. At CMIF platform, the electron antineutrino production rate can be up to $2.0\times 10^{19}$ per day. When paired with an 80 t liquid scintillator detector to study short baseline electron antineutrino disappearance, the inverse beta decay (IBD) event rate is large enough to investigate the parameter ranges of interest for neutrino anomalies. Our sensitivity analysis shows that a short baseline experiment at this platform will provide a very competitive sterile neutrino search, especially in the high-$Δm^2$ region ($Δm^2 >10\,\text{eV}^2$).

Error Model of Radio Fingerprint and PDR Fusion Indoor Localization

Multi-source fusion positioning is one of the technical frameworks for obtaining sufficient indoor positioning accuracy. In order to evaluate the effect of multi-source fusion positioning, it is necessary to establish a fusion error model. In this paper, we first use the least squares method to fuse the radio fingerprint and the PDR positioning, and then apply the variance propagation laws to calculate the error distribution of indoor multi-source localization methods. Based on the fusion error model, we developed an indoor positioning simulation system. The system can give a better positioning source layout scheme under a given condition, and can evaluate the signal strength distribution and the error distribution.

High dimensional entanglement between a photon and a multiplexed atomic quantum memory

Multiplexed quantum memories and high-dimensional entanglement can improve the performance of quantum repeaters by promoting the entanglement generation rate and the quantum communication channel capacity. Here, we experimentally generate a high-dimensional entangled state between a photon and a collective spin wave excitation stored in the multiplexed atomic quantum memory. We verify the entanglement dimension by the quantum witness and the entanglement of formation. Then we use the high-dimensional entangled state to test the violation of the Bell-type inequality. Our work provides an effective method to generate multidimensional entanglement between the flying photonic pulses and the atomic quantum interface.

Broad-Coverage Semantic Parsing as Transduction

We unify different broad-coverage semantic parsing tasks under a transduction paradigm, and propose an attention-based neural framework that incrementally builds a meaning representation via a sequence of semantic relations. By leveraging multiple attention mechanisms, the transducer can be effectively trained without relying on a pre-trained aligner. Experiments conducted on three separate broad-coverage semantic parsing tasks -- AMR, SDP and UCCA -- demonstrate that our attention-based neural transducer improves the state of the art on both AMR and UCCA, and is competitive with the state of the art on SDP.

Neural Machine Reading Comprehension: Methods and Trends

Machine reading comprehension (MRC), which requires a machine to answer questions based on a given context, has attracted increasing attention with the incorporation of various deep-learning techniques over the past few years. Although research on MRC based on deep learning is flourishing, there remains a lack of a comprehensive survey summarizing existing approaches and recent trends, which motivated the work presented in this article. Specifically, we give a thorough review of this research field, covering different aspects including (1) typical MRC tasks: their definitions, differences, and representative datasets; (2) the general architecture of neural MRC: the main modules and prevalent approaches to each; and (3) new trends: some emerging areas in neural MRC as well as the corresponding challenges. Finally, considering what has been achieved so far, the survey also envisages what the future may hold by discussing the open issues left to be addressed.

The Universal Decompositional Semantics Dataset and Decomp Toolkit

We present the Universal Decompositional Semantics (UDS) dataset (v1.0), which is bundled with the Decomp toolkit (v0.1). UDS1.0 unifies five high-quality, decompositional semantics-aligned annotation sets within a single semantic graph specification---with graph structures defined by the predicative patterns produced by the PredPatt tool and real-valued node and edge attributes constructed using sophisticated normalization procedures. The Decomp toolkit provides a suite of Python 3 tools for querying UDS graphs using SPARQL. Both UDS1.0 and Decomp0.1 are publicly available at http://decomp.io.

Quantum Communication between Multiplexed Atomic Quantum Memories

The use of multiplexed atomic quantum memories (MAQM) can significantly enhance the efficiency to establish entanglement in a quantum network. In the previous experiments, individual elements of a quantum network, such as the generation, storage and transmission of quantum entanglement have been demonstrated separately. Here we report an experiment to show the compatibility of these basic operations. Specifically, we generate photon-atom entanglement in a $6\times 5$ MAQM, convert the spin wave to time-bin photonic excitation after a controllable storage time, and then store and retrieve the photon in a second MAQM for another controllable storage time. The preservation of quantum information in this process is verified by measuring the state fidelity. We also show that our scheme supports quantum systems with higher dimension than a qubit.

Neural-Davidsonian Semantic Proto-role Labeling

We present a model for semantic proto-role labeling (SPRL) using an adapted bidirectional LSTM encoding strategy that we call "Neural-Davidsonian": predicate-argument structure is represented as pairs of hidden states corresponding to predicate and argument head tokens of the input sequence. We demonstrate: (1) state-of-the-art results in SPRL, and (2) that our network naturally shares parameters between attributes, allowing for learning new attribute types with limited added supervision.

Omnidirectional Scene Text Detection with Sequential-free Box Discretization

Scene text in the wild is commonly presented with high variant characteristics. Using quadrilateral bounding box to localize the text instance is nearly indispensable for detection methods. However, recent researches reveal that introducing quadrilateral bounding box for scene text detection will bring a label confusion issue which is easily overlooked, and this issue may significantly undermine the detection performance. To address this issue, in this paper, we propose a novel method called Sequential-free Box Discretization (SBD) by discretizing the bounding box into key edges (KE) which can further derive more effective methods to improve detection performance. Experiments showed that the proposed method can outperform state-of-the-art methods in many popular scene text benchmarks, including ICDAR 2015, MLT, and MSRA-TD500. Ablation study also showed that simply integrating the SBD into Mask R-CNN framework, the detection performance can be substantially improved. Furthermore, an experiment on the general object dataset HRSC2016 (multi-oriented ships) showed that our method can outperform recent state-of-the-art methods by a large margin, demonstrating its powerful generalization ability. AMR Parsing as Sequence-to-Graph Transduction

We propose an attention-based model that treats AMR parsing as sequence-to-graph transduction. Unlike most AMR parsers that rely on pre-trained aligners, external semantic resources, or data augmentation, our proposed parser is aligner-free, and it can be effectively trained with limited amounts of labeled AMR data. Our experimental results outperform all previously reported SMATCH scores, on both AMR 2.0 (76.3% F1 on LDC2017T10) and AMR 1.0 (70.2% F1 on LDC2014T12).

Imaging the stochastic microstructure and dynamic development of correlations in perpendicular artificial spin ice

We use spatially resolved magneto-optical Kerr microscopy to track the complete microstates of arrays of perpendicular anisotropy nanomagnets during magnetization hysteresis cycles. These measurements allow us to disentangle the intertwined effects of nearest neighbor interaction, disorder, and stochasticity on magnetization switching. We find that the nearest neighbor correlations depend on both interaction strength and disorder. We also find that although the global characteristics of the hysteretic switching are repeatable, the exact microstate sampled is stochastic with the behavior of individual islands varying between nonminally identical runs.

Unsupervised Deep Structured Semantic Models for Commonsense Reasoning

Commonsense reasoning is fundamental to natural language understanding. While traditional methods rely heavily on human-crafted features and knowledge bases, we explore learning commonsense knowledge from a large amount of raw text via unsupervised learning. We propose two neural network models based on the Deep Structured Semantic Models (DSSM) framework to tackle two classic commonsense reasoning tasks, Winograd Schema challenges (WSC) and Pronoun Disambiguation (PDP). Evaluation shows that the proposed models effectively capture contextual information in the sentence and co-reference information between pronouns and nouns, and achieve significant improvement over previous state-of-the-art approaches.

Learning to Detect Instantaneous Changes with Retrospective Convolution and Static Sample Synthesis

Change detection has been a challenging visual task due to the dynamic nature of real-world scenes. Good performance of existing methods depends largely on prior background images or a long-term observation. These methods, however, suffer severe degradation when they are applied to detection of instantaneously occurred changes with only a few preceding frames provided. In this paper, we exploit spatio-temporal convolutional networks to address this challenge, and propose a novel retrospective convolution, which features efficient change information extraction between the current frame and frames from historical observation. To address the problem of foreground-specific over-fitting in learning-based methods, we further propose a data augmentation method, named static sample synthesis, to guide the network to focus on learning change-cued information rather than specific spatial features of foreground. Trained end-to-end with complex scenarios, our framework proves to be accurate in detecting instantaneous changes and robust in combating diverse noises. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method significantly outperforms existing methods.

Halo: Learning Semantics-Aware Representations for Cross-Lingual Information Extraction

Cross-lingual information extraction (CLIE) is an important and challenging task, especially in low resource scenarios. To tackle this challenge, we propose a training method, called Halo, which enforces the local region of each hidden state of a neural model to only generate target tokens with the same semantic structure tag. This simple but powerful technique enables a neural model to learn semantics-aware representations that are robust to noise, without introducing any extra parameter, thus yielding better generalization in both high and low resource settings.

Fine-grained Entity Typing through Increased Discourse Context and Adaptive Classification Thresholds

Fine-grained entity typing is the task of assigning fine-grained semantic types to entity mentions. We propose a neural architecture which learns a distributional semantic representation that leverages a greater amount of semantic context -- both document and sentence level information -- than prior work. We find that additional context improves performance, with further improvements gained by utilizing adaptive classification thresholds. Experiments show that our approach without reliance on hand-crafted features achieves the state-of-the-art results on three benchmark datasets.
