Anisotropic hot carrier relaxation mediated by electron phonon scattering in TiN thin films

Crystal orientations can shape the ultrafast energy relaxations of transition-metal nitride thin films. Here, we investigate the orientation-dependent electron-phonon (e-ph) mediated relaxation in titanium nitride (TiN) thin films along the [100], [110], and [111] directions by combining first-principles calculations with ultrafast pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy. Using maximally localized Wannier functions, we evaluate e-ph quasiparticle scattering lifetimes near the Fermi level and identify a clear anisotropy: The TiN [111] orientation exhibits a longer e-ph scattering lifetime (15.96 fs) than [100] (13.69 fs) and [110] (11.12 fs), indicating reduced intrinsic e-ph scattering strength. Furthermore, we grew quasi-epitaxial, orientation-controlled TiN thin films on MgO substrates. Pump-probe measurements reveals that the population-level relaxation (hot-electron cooling) time also depends on orientations, with [111] films showing a significantly slower decay (110 fs) than [100] (90 fs) and [110] (80 fs). We emphasize that the calculated few-femtosecond scattering lifetimes and the measured few-hundred-femtosecond cooling time respectively represent single-event scattering and collective cooling, yet they exhibit consistent trends. These results demonstrate that crystallographic orientation provides a practical and powerful route to tune e-ph-governed relaxation in TiN thin films, offering essential design guidelines for refractory plasmonic and energy-conversion platforms.

Interpretable Machine Learning for Football Performance Analysis: Evidence of Limited Transferability from Elite Leagues to University Competition

Machine learning has become increasingly prevalent in football performance analysis, yet most studies prioritize predictive accuracy while implicitly assuming that learned performance determinants and their interpretations are transferable across competition levels. Whether interpretability remains reliable under domain shift-from elite to university football remains largely unexplored. This study investigates whether performance determinants learned from elite competitions are structurally transferable to university-level football and whether their interpretations remain robust under domain shift. Models were trained on large-scale event data from the top five European leagues and applied to university football data from National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) using an identical feature space. Random Forest and Multilayer Perceptron models were interpreted using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) and Counterfactual Impact Score (CIS). Across five experiments, elite football exhibited a stable and consistent hierarchy of performance determinants across leagues, models, and explanation methods. In contrast, NTHU university football showed substantial reordering of key indicators, reduced explanation stability, weaker structural agreement with elite domains, and increased sensitivity to explanation method. These findings suggest that interpretability robustness is domain-dependent. Rather than reflecting methodological limitations alone, instability in explanations under domain shift may serve as a diagnostic signal of structural ambiguity in the target domain.

Quantum Multimodal Contrastive Learning Framework

In this paper, we propose a novel framework for multimodal contrastive learning utilizing a quantum encoder to integrate EEG (electroencephalogram) and image data. This groundbreaking attempt explores the integration of quantum encoders within the traditional multimodal learning framework. By leveraging the unique properties of quantum computing, our method enhances the representation learning capabilities, providing a robust framework for analyzing time series and visual information concurrently. We demonstrate that the quantum encoder effectively captures intricate patterns within EEG signals and image features, facilitating improved contrastive learning across modalities. This work opens new avenues for integrating quantum computing with multimodal data analysis, particularly in applications requiring simultaneous interpretation of temporal and visual data.

Orbital-ordered ferromagnetic insulating state in tensile-strained SrCoO$_{3}$ thin films

At ambient pressure, bulk SrCoO$_{3}$ is a ferromagnetic (FM) metal in cubic perovskite structure. By contrast, magnetic properties of epitaxial SrCoO$_{3}$ thin films, especially at high tensile strain ($\varepsilon \gtrsim 3$\%), remain unclear: Previous calculations had predicted antiferromagnetic (AFM) states more energetically favorable in this regime, but recent experiments indicated a FM insulating state. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we perform an extensive search for the structural, spin, magnetic, and orbital states of SrCoO$_{3}$ thin films. Our calculations indicate that at $0 < \varepsilon \lesssim 2.5$\%, SrCoO$_{3}$ favors a FM half-metallic state with intermediate-spin ($t_{2g}^{5}e_{g}^{1}$-like) Co exhibiting $d^{6}\underline L$ character. At $\varepsilon \gtrsim 2.5$\%, a FM insulating state with high-spin ($t_{2g}^{4}e_{g}^{2}$-like) Co dominates. This FM insulating state is achieved via complicated orbital ordering, cooperative Jahn--Teller distortion, and octahedral tilting about all three crystal axes.
