A covariantisation of M5-brane action in dual formulation

We construct a manifestly diffeomorphic M5-brane action in dual formulation coupled to an eleven-dimensional supergravity target space. The covariantisation is carried out by using (generalised) PST technique with 5 auxiliary scalar fields, which are obtained by using a geometrical consideration as a reduction of an auxiliary 4-form of Maznytsia-Preitschopf-Sorokin. As is typical in PST-covariantised theory, our construction possesses as usual the two local PST symmetries. By using one of the local PST symmetries, the action can be reduced to the non-manifestly covariant M5-brane action in dual formulation constructed earlier by the authors. The discussion on double dimensional reduction to D4-brane, and on the comparison of on-shell action then easily follows.

Pseudo-topological Quasi-local Energy of Torsion Gravity

Torsion gravity is a natural extension to Einstein gravity in the presence of the fermion matter sources. In this paper we adopt Wald's covariant method of Noether charge to construct the quasi-local energy of the Einstein-Cartan-fermion system, and find that its explicit expression is formally independent of the coupling constant between torsion and axial current. This seemingly topological nature is unexpected and is reminiscent of similar nature of quantum Hall effect and topological insulator. However, the coupling dependence does enter when evaluating it on-shell, and thus the topological nature is pseudo. Based on the expression of the quasi-local energy, we evaluate it for a particular solution on the entanglement wedge and find the agreement with the holographic relative entropy obtained before. This shows that the equivalence of these two quantities in the Einstein-Cartan-fermion system. Moreover, the quasi-local energy in this case is not always positive definite so that it provides an example of swampland in torsion gravity. Based on the covariant Noether charge, we also derive the nonzero fermion effect on Komar angular momentum. The implication of our results to the tests of torsion gravity in the future gravitational wave astronomy is also discussed.

The Dual Formulation of M5-brane Action

We construct a dual formulation, with respect to the conventional PST formalism, of the M5-brane action propagating in a generic 11d supergravity background. Constraint analysis is performed to further justify that our theory has the correct number of degrees of freedom. Comparison of this action with the existing M5-brane actions is carried out. We also show that a conventional D4-brane action is obtained upon double dimensional reduction.

Towards 2+4 formulation of M5-brane

We present an attempt to formulate an action for the worldvolume theory of a single M5-brane, based on the splitting of the six worldvolume directions into 2+4, which breaks manifest Lorentz invariance from $SO(1,5)$ to $SO(1,1)\times SO(4)$. To this end, an action for the free six--dimensional (2,0) chiral tensor multiplet, and separately, a nonlinearly interacting chiral 2-form action are constructed. By studying the Lagrangian formulation for the chiral 2-form with 2+4 splitting, it is suggested that, if exists, the modified diffeomorphism of the theory on curved six--dimensional space--time is less trivial than its 1+5 and 3+3 counterpart, thus hindering the coupling of the chiral 2-form to the induced metric on the worldvolume of the M5-brane. We discuss difficulties of further generalisation of the theory. Finally, in terms of Hamiltonian analysis, we show that the naively gauge-fixed failed-PST-covariantised Lagrangian has the correct number of degrees of freedom, and satisfies the hyper--surface deformation algebra.

The M5-brane action revisited

We construct an alternative form of the M5-brane action in which the six-dimensional worldvolume is subject to a covariant split into 3+3 directions by a triplet of auxiliary fields. We consider the relation of this action to the original form of the M5-brane action and to a Nambu-Poisson 5-brane action based on the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson model with the gauge symmetry of volume preserving diffeomorphisms

Non-Abelian Self-Dual String Solutions

We consider the equations of motion of the non-abelian 5-branes theory recently constructed in http://arxiv.org/abs/arXiv:1203.4224 and find exact string solutions both for uncompactified and compactified spacetime. Although one does not have the full supersymmetric construction of the non-abelian (2,0) theory, by combining knowledge of conformal symmetry and R-symmetry one can argue for the form of the 1/2 BPS equations in the case when only one scalar field is turned on. We solve this system and show that our string solutions could be lifted to become solutions of the non-abelian (2,0) theory with self-dual electric and magnetic charges, with the scalar field describing a M2-brane spike emerging out of the multiple M5-branes worldvolume.

Non-abelian Action for Multiple Five-Branes with Self-Dual Tensors

We construct an action for non-abelian 2-form in 6-dimensions. Our action consists of a non-abelian generalization of the abelian action of Perry and Schwarz for a single five-brane. It admits a self-duality equation on the field strength as the equation of motion. It has a modified 6d Lorentz symmetry. On dimensional reduction on a circle, our action gives the standard 5d Yang-Mills action plus higher order corrections. Based on these properties, we propose that our theory describes the gauge sector of multiple M5-branes in flat space.

Stirling number Identities and High energy String Scatterings

We use Stirling number identities developed recently in number theory to show that ratios among high energy string scattering amplitudes in the fixed angle regime can be extracted from the Kummer function of the second kind. This result not only brings an interesting bridge between string theory and combinatoric number theory but also sheds light on the understanding of algebraic structure of high energy stringy symmetry.

Kummer function and High energy String Scatterings

Based on a summation algorithm for Stirling number identity developed recently, we discover that the ratios calculated previously among high energy string scattering amplitudes in the Gross regime (GR) can be extracted from the Kummer function of the second kind. This function naturally shows up in the leading order of high energy string scattering amplitudes in the Regge regime (RR). As a result, the identity suggested by string theory calculation can be rigorously proved by a totally different but sophisticated mathematical method. We conjecture and give evidences that the existence of these ratios in the RR persists to all orders in the Regge expansion of high energy string scattering amplitudes.

Patterns of High energy Massive String Scatterings in the Regge regime

We calculate high energy massive string scattering amplitudes of open bosonic string in the Regge regime (RR). We found that the number of high energy amplitudes for each fixed mass level in the RR is much more numerous than that of Gross regime (GR) calculated previously. Moreover, we discover that the leading order amplitudes in the RR can be expressed in terms of the Kummer function of the second kind. In particular, based on a summation algorithm for Stirling number identity, we discover that the ratios calculated previously among scattering amplitudes in the GR can be extracted from this Kummer function in the RR. We conjecture and give evidences that the existence of these GR ratios in the RR persists to subleading orders in the Regge expansion of all string scattering amplitudes. Finally, we demonstrate the universal power-law behavior for all massive string scattering amplitudes in the RR.
