Revealing mechanism of pore defect formation in laser directed energy deposition of aluminum alloy via in-situ synchrotron X-ray imaging

Laser metal additive manufacturing technology is capable of producing components with complex geometries and compositions that cannot be realized by conventional manufacturing methods. However, a large number of pores generated during the additive manufacturing process greatly affect the mechanical properties of the additively manufactured parts, and the mechanism of such pore generation has not been revealed by direct observation clearly. Here, we report the mechanism of pore generation in the laser direct energy deposition process as revealed by {\it in-situ} high-speed high-resolution synchrotron X-ray imaging. We found that dissolution and re-precipitation of external gases and precipitation of metal vapors are the two main mechanisms of pore formation. We further explored the effects of different process parameters on the generation of pores and optimized the process to suppress pore generation. This work provides important insights into the formation of porosity defects during laser metal additive manufacturing, and can provide guidance for related process optimization.

Impact of resonator geometry and its coupling with ground plane on ultrathin metamaterial perfect absorbers

We investigate the impact of resonator geometry and its coupling with ground plane on the performance of metamaterial perfect absorbers. Using a cross-resonator as an example structure, we find that the absorber thickness can be further reduced through modifying the geometric dimensions of the resonators. Numerical simulations and theoretical calculations reveal that destructive interference of multiple reflections is responsible for the near-unity absorption. The near-field coupling between the resonator array and ground plane can be significant. When this coupling is taken into account, the theoretical results calculated using the interference model are in excellent agreement with experiments and numerical simulations.

Experimental demonstration of terahertz metamaterial absorbers with a broad and flat high absorption band

We present the design, numerical simulations and experimental measurements of THz metamaterial absorbers with a broad and flat absorption top both for transverse electric and transverse magnetic polarizations over a wide incidence angle range. The metamaterial absorber unit cell consists of two sets of structures resonating at different but close frequencies. The overall absorption spectrum is the superposition of individual components and becomes flat at the top over a significant bandwidth. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.

Dynamic plasticity of beryllium in the inertial fuel fusion capsule regime

The plastic response of beryllium was investigated during loading by laser-induced shock waves, using surface velocimetry and in-situ x-ray diffraction. Results from loading by thermal x-rays (hohlraum) were consistent with more extensive studies using laser ablation. Strong elastic waves were observed, up to ~1 km/s in free surface speed, with significant structure before the arrival of the plastic shock. The magnitude and shape of the precursor could be reproduced with a plasticity model based on dislocation dynamics. Changes in lattice spacing measured from the x-ray diffraction pattern gave a direct measurement of uniaxial compression in the elastic wave, triaxial flow from the decay of the precursor, and triaxial compression in the plastic shock; these were consistent with the velocity data. The dynamic strength behavior deduced from the laser experiments was used to help interpret surface velocity data around the onset of shock-induced melting. A model of heterogeneous mixtures is being extended to treat anisotropic components, and spall.
