Reanalysis of the top-quark pair hadroproduction and a precise determination of the top-quark pole mass at the LHC

In this paper, we calculate the $t\bar{t}$ pQCD production cross-section at NNLO and determine the top-quark pole mass from recent measurements at the LHC at $\sqrt{S}=13$ TeV center-of-mass energy to high precision by applying the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC). The PMC provides a systematic method which rigorously eliminates QCD renormalization scale ambiguities by summing the nonconformal $β$ contributions into the QCD coupling constant. The PMC predictions satisfy the requirements of renormalization group invariance, including renormalization scheme independence, and the PMC scales accurately reflect the virtuality of the underlying production subprocesses. By using the PMC, an improved prediction for the $t\bar{t}$ production cross-section is obtained without scale ambiguities, which in turn provides a precise value for the top-quark pole mass. Moreover, the predictive power of PMC calculations that the magnitude of higher-order PMC predictions are well within the error bars predicted from the known lower-order has been demonstrated for the top-quark pair production. The resulting determination of the top-quark pole mass $m_t^{\rm pole}=172.5\pm1.4$ GeV from the LHC measurement at $\sqrt{S}=13$ TeV is in agreement with the current world average cited by the Particle Data Group (PDG). The PMC prediction provides an important high-precision test of the consistency of pQCD and the SM at $\sqrt{S}=13$ TeV with previous LHC measurements at lower CM energies.

Thrust Distribution for 3-Jet Production from $e^+e^-$ Annihilation within the QCD Conformal Window and in QED

We investigate the theoretical predictions for thrust distribution in the electron positron annihilation to three-jets process at NNLO for different values of the number of flavors, $N_f$. To determine the distribution along the entire renormalization group flow from the highest energies to zero energy we consider the number of flavors near the upper boundary of the conformal window. In this regime of number of flavors the theory develops a perturbative infrared interacting fixed point. We then consider also the QED thrust obtained as the limit $N_c \rightarrow 0$ of the number of colors. In this case the low energy limit is governed by an infrared free theory. Using these quantum field theories limits as theoretical laboratories we arrive at an interesting comparison between the Conventional Scale Setting - (CSS) and the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC$_\infty$) methods. We show that within the perturbative regime of the conformal window and also out of the conformal window the PMC$_\infty$ leads to a higher precision, and that reducing the number of flavors, from the upper boundary to the lower boundary, through the phase transition the curves given by the PMC$_\infty$ method preserve with continuity the position of the peak, showing perfect agreement with the experimental data already at NNLO.

PMC$_\infty$: Infinite-Order Scale-Setting method using the Principle of Maximum Conformality and preserving the Intrinsic Conformality

We show results for Thrust and C-parameter in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation to 3 jets obtained using the recently developed new method for eliminating the scale ambiguity and the scheme dependence in pQCD namely the Infinite-Order Scale-Setting method using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC$_\infty$). This method preserves an important underlying property of gauge theories: intrinsic Conformality (iCF). It leads to a remarkably efficient method to eliminate the conventional renormalization scale ambiguity at any order in pQCD. A comparison with Conventional Scale Setting method (CSS) is also shown.

$Z$-boson hadronic decay width up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^4)$-order QCD corrections using the single-scale approach of the principle of maximum conformality

In the paper, we study the properties of the $Z$-boson hadronic decay width by using the $\mathcal{O}(α_s^4)$-order quantum chromodynamics (QCD) corrections with the help of the principle of maximum conformality (PMC). By using the PMC single-scale approach, we obtain an accurate renormalization scale-and-scheme independent perturbative QCD (pQCD) correction for the $Z$-boson hadronic decay width, which is independent to any choice of renormalization scale. After applying the PMC, a more convergent pQCD series has been obtained; and the contributions from the unknown $\mathcal{O}(α_s^5)$-order terms are highly suppressed, e.g. conservatively, we have $ΔΓ_{\rm Z}^{\rm had}|^{{\cal O}(α_s^5)}_{\rm PMC}\simeq \pm 0.004$ MeV. In combination with the known electro-weak (EW) corrections, QED corrections, EW-QCD mixed corrections, and QED-QCD mixed corrections, our final prediction of the hadronic $Z$ decay width is $Γ_{\rm Z}^{\rm had}=1744.439^{+1.390}_{-1.433}$ MeV, which agrees with the PDG global fit of experimental measurements, $1744.4\pm 2.0$ MeV.

Revisiting the Bottom Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry $A_{\rm {FB}}$ in Electron-Positron Collisions

The bottom quark forward-backward asymmetry $A_{\rm{FB}}$ is a key observable in electron-positron collisions at the $Z^{0}$ peak. In this paper, we employ the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) to fix the $α_s$-running behavior of the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to $A_{\rm{FB}}$. The resulting PMC scale for this $A_{\rm{FB}}$ is an order of magnitude smaller than the conventional choice $μ_r=M_Z$. This scale has the physically reasonable behavior and reflects the virtuality of its QCD dynamics, which is independent to the choice of renormalization scale. Our analyses show that the effective momentum flow for the bottom quark forward-backward asymmetry should be $μ_r\ll M_Z$ other than the conventionally suggested $μ_r=M_Z$. Moreover, the convergence of perturbative QCD series for $A_{\rm{FB}}$ is greatly improved using the PMC. Our prediction for the bare bottom quark forward-backward asymmetry is refined to be $A^{0,b}_{\rm FB}=0.1004\pm0.0016$, which diminishes the well known tension between the experimental determination for this (pseudo) observable and the respective Standard Model fit to $2.1σ$.

Renormalization Scale Setting for Heavy Quark Pair Production in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation near the Threshold Region

Heavy fermion pair production in $e^+e^-$ annihilation is a fundamental process in hadron physics and is of considerable interest for various phenomena. In this paper, we will apply the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) to provide a comprehensive analysis of these processes. The PMC provides a systematic, unambiguous method for determining the renormalization scales of the QCD coupling constant for single-scale and multiple-scale applications. The resulting predictions eliminate any renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities, eliminate the factorial renormalon divergences, and are consistent with the requirements of the renormalization group. It is remarkable that two distinctly different scales are determined by using the PMC for heavy fermion pair production near the threshold region. One scale is the order of the fermion mass $m_f$, which enters the hard virtual corrections, and the other scale is of order $ v\,m_f$, where $v$ is the quark velocity, which enters the Coulomb rescattering amplitude. The PMC scales yield the correct physical behavior and reflect the virtuality of the propagating gluons (photons) for the QCD (QED) processes. Moreover, we demonstrate the consistency of PMC scale setting from QCD to QED. Perfect agreement between the Abelian unambiguous Gell-Mann-Low and the PMC scale-setting methods in the limit of zero number of colors is demonstrated.

PMC$_\infty$: Infinite-Order Scale-Setting using the Principle of Maximum Conformality, A Remarkably Efficient Method for Eliminating Renormalization Scale Ambiguities for Perturbative QCD

We identify a property of renormalizable SU(N)/U(1) gauge theories, the intrinsic Conformality ($iCF$), which underlies the scale invariance of physical observables and leads to a remarkably efficient method to solve the conventional renormalization scale ambiguity at every order in pQCD: the PMC$_\infty$. This new method reflects the underlying conformal properties displayed by pQCD at NNLO, eliminates the scheme dependence of pQCD predictions and is consistent with the general properties of the PMC (Principle of Maximum Conformality). We introduce a new method to identify conformal and $β$-terms which can be applied either to numerical or to theoretical calculations. We illustrate the PMC$_\infty$ for the thrust and C-parameter distributions in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation and then we show how to apply this new method to general observables in QCD. We point out how the implementation of the PMC$_\infty$ can significantly improve the precision of pQCD predictions; its implementation in multi-loop analysis also simplifies the calculation of higher orders corrections in a general renormalizable gauge theory.

Novel Method for the Precise Determination of the QCD Running Coupling from Event Shapes Distributions in Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present a novel method for precisely determining the running QCD coupling constant $α_s(Q^2)$ over a wide range of $Q^2$ from event shapes for electron-positron annihilation measured at a single annihilation energy $\sqrt{s}$. The renormalization scale $Q^2$ of the running coupling depends dynamically on the virtuality of the underlying quark and gluon subprocess and thus the specific kinematics of each event. The determination of the renormalization scale for event shape distributions is obtained by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC), a rigorous scale-setting method for gauge theories which satisfies all the requirements of Renormalization Group Invariance, including renormalization-scheme independence and consistency with Abelian theory in the $N_C \to 0$ limit. In this paper we apply the PMC to two classic event shapes measured in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation: the thrust ($T$) and C-parameter ($C$). The PMC renormalization scale depends differentially on the values of $T$ and $C$. The application of PMC scale-setting determines the running coupling $α_s(Q^2)$ to high precision over a wide range of $Q^2$ from $10$ to $250~\rm{GeV}^2$ from measurements of the event shape distributions at the $Z^0$ peak. The extrapolation of the running coupling using pQCD evolution gives the value $α_s(M^2_Z)=0.1185\pm0.0012$ from the thrust, and $α_s(M^2_Z)=0.1193^{+0.0021}_{-0.0019}$ from the C-parameter in the $\bar{\rm{MS}}$ scheme. These determinations of $α_s(M^2_Z)$ are consistent with the world average and are more precise than the values obtained from analyses of event shapes currently used in the world average. The highly-consistent results for the $T$ and $C$ event-shape distributions provide an additional verification of the applicability of the PMC to pQCD.

The QCD Renormalization Group Equation and the Elimination of Fixed-Order Scheme-and-Scale Ambiguities Using the Principle of Maximum Conformality

The conventional approach to fixed-order perturbative QCD predictions is based on an arbitrary choice of the renormalization scale, together with an arbitrary range. This {\it ad hoc} assignment of the renormalization scale causes the coefficients of the QCD running coupling at each perturbative order to be strongly dependent on the choice of both the renormalization scale and the renormalization scheme. However, such ambiguities are not necessary, since as a basic requirement of renormalization group invariance (RGI), any physical observable must be independent of the choice of both the renormalization scheme and the renormalization scale. In fact, if one uses the {\it Principle of Maximum Conformality} (PMC) to fix the renormalization scale, the coefficients of the pQCD series match the series of conformal theory, and they are thus scheme independent. It has been found that the elimination of the scale and scheme ambiguities at all orders relies heavily on how precisely we know the analytic form of the QCD running coupling $α_s$. In this review, we summarize the known properties of the QCD running coupling and its recent progresses, especially for its behavior within the asymptotic region. We also summarize the current progress on the PMC and some of its typical applications, showing to what degree the conventional renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities can be eliminated after applying the PMC. We also compare the PA approach for the conventional scale-dependent pQCD series and the PMC scale-independent conformal series. We observe that by using the conformal series, the PA approach can provide a more reliable estimate of the magnitude of the uncalculated terms. And if the conformal series for an observable has been calculated up to $n_{\rm th}$-order level, then the $[N/M]=[0/n-1]$-type PA series provides an important estimate for the higher-order terms.

Thrust Distribution in Electron-Positron Annihilation using the Principle of Maximum Conformality

We present a comprehensive and self-consistent analysis for the thrust distribution by using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC). By absorbing all nonconformal terms into the running coupling using PMC via renormalization group equation, the scale in the running coupling shows the correct physical behavior and the correct number of active flavors is determined. The resulting PMC predictions agree with the precise measurements for both the thrust differential distributions and the thrust mean values. Moreover, we provide a new remarkable way to determine the running of the coupling constant $α_s(Q^2)$ from the measurement of the jet distributions in electron-positron annihilation at a single given value of the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$.

Properties of the decay $H\toγγ$ using the approximate $α_s^4$-corrections and the principle of maximum conformality

The Higgs boson decay channel, $H\toγγ$, is one of the most important channels for probing the properties of the Higgs boson. In the paper, we reanalyze its decay width by using the QCD corrections up to $α_s^4$-order level. The principle of maximum conformality has been adopted to achieve a precise pQCD prediction without conventional renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities. By taking the Higgs mass as the one given by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, i.e. $M_{H}=125.09\pm0.21\pm0.11$ GeV, we obtain $Γ(H\to γγ)|_{\rm LHC}=9.364^{+0.076}_{-0.075}$ KeV.

Reanalysis of the Higgs-boson decay $H \to gg$ up to $α_s^6$-order level using the principle of maximum conformality

Using the newly available $α_s^6$-order QCD correction to the Higgs decay channel $H\to gg$, we make a detailed discussion on the perturbative properties of the decay width $Γ(H\to gg)$ by using the principle of maximum conformality (PMC). The PMC provides a way to eliminate the conventional renormalization scheme-and-scale ambiguities, which uses the renormalization group equation to determine the optimal running behavior of the strong coupling constant at each order via a recursive way. Even though there is no ambiguity for setting the renormalization scale, there is residual scale dependence for the PMC predictions due to unknown high-order terms. Using the $α_s^6$-order terms, the somewhat larger residual renormalization scale dependence at the $α_s^5$-order level observed in our previous work can be greatly suppressed, which shows $Γ(H\to gg)\rm{|_{ PMC }} =337.9 \pm1.7_{-0.1}^{+0.9}\pm1.9$ KeV, where the first error is caused by the Higgs mass uncertainty $ΔM_{H}=0.24$ GeV, the second one is the residual scale dependence by varying the initial choice of scale within the region of $\left[{M_H}/{2},4 M_H\right]$, and the third one is the conservative prediction of unknown high-order contributions.

A solution to the $γγ^*\rightarrowη_c$ puzzle using the Principle of Maximum Conformality

The next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) pQCD prediction for the $γγ^* \to η_c$ form factor was evaluated in 2015 using nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). A strong discrepancy between the NRQCD prediction and the BaBar measurements was observed. Until now there has been no solution for this puzzle. In this paper, we present a NNLO analysis by applying the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) to set the renormalization scale. By carefully dealing with the light-by-light diagrams at the NNLO level, the resulting high precision PMC prediction agrees with the BaBar measurements within errors, and the conventional renormalization scale uncertainty is eliminated. The PMC is consistent with all of the requirements of the renormalization group, including scheme-independence. The application of the PMC thus provides a rigorous solution for the $γγ^* \to η_c$ form factor puzzle, emphasizing the importance of correct renormalization scale-setting. The results also support the applicability of NRQCD to hard exclusive processes involving charmonium.

A precise determination of the top-quark pole mass

The Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) provides a systematic way to eliminate the renormalization scheme and renormalization scale uncertainties for high-energy processes. We have observed that by applying PMC scale-setting, one obtains comprehensive and self-consistent pQCD predictions for the top-quark pair total cross-section and the top-quark pair forward-backward asymmetry in agreement with the measurements at the Tevatron and LHC. As a step forward, in the present paper, we determine the top-quark pole mass via a detailed comparison of the top-quark pair cross-section with the measurements at the Tevatron and LHC. The results for the top-quark pole mass are $m_t=174.6^{+3.1}_{-3.2}$ GeV for the Tevatron with $\sqrt{S}=1.96$ TeV, $m_t=173.7\pm1.5$ GeV and $174.2\pm1.7$ GeV for the LHC with $\sqrt{S} = 7$ TeV and $8$ TeV, respectively. Those predictions agree with the average, $173.34\pm0.76$ GeV, obtained from various collaborations via direct measurements. The consistency of the pQCD predictions using the PMC with all of the collider measurements at different energies provides an important verification of QCD.

Application of the Principle of Maximum Conformality to the Hadroproduction of the Higgs Boson at the LHC

We present improved pQCD predictions for Higgs boson hadroproduction at the Large Hadronic Collider (LHC) by applying the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC), a procedure which resums the pQCD series using the renormalization group (RG), thereby eliminating the dependence of the predictions on the choice of the renormalization scheme while minimizing sensitivity to the initial choice of the renormalization scale. In previous pQCD predictions for Higgs boson hadroproduction, it has been conventional to assume that the renormalization scale $μ_r$ of the QCD coupling $α_s(μ_r)$ is the Higgs mass, and then to vary this choice over the range $1/2 m_H < μ_r < 2 m_H $ in order to estimate the theory uncertainty. However, this error estimate is only sensitive to the non-conformal $β$ terms in the pQCD series, and thus it fails to correctly estimate the theory uncertainty in cases where pQCD series has large higher order contributions, as is the case for Higgs boson hadroproduction. Furthermore, this \mbox{\it ad hoc} choice of scale and range gives pQCD predictions which depend on the renormalization scheme being used, in contradiction to basic RG principles. In contrast, after applying the PMC, we obtain next-to-next-to-leading order RG resummed pQCD predictions for Higgs boson hadroproduction which are renormalization-scheme independent and have minimal sensitivity to the choice of the initial renormalization scale. Taking $m_H=125$ GeV, the PMC predictions for the $p p \to H X$ Higgs inclusive hadroproduction cross-sections for various LHC center-of-mass energies and the fiducial cross section $σ_{\rm fid}(pp\to H\toγγ)$ are presented...... The PMC predictions show better agreement with the ATLAS measurements than the LHC-XS predictions which are based on conventional renormalization scale-setting.

The Higgs-Boson Decay $H\to gg$ to Order $α_s^5$ under the mMOM-Scheme

We study the decay width of the Higgs-boson $H\to gg$ up to order $α_s^5$ under the minimal momentum space subtraction scheme (mMOM-scheme). To improve the accuracy of perturbative QCD prediction, we adopt the principle of maximum conformality (PMC) to set its renormalization scales. A detailed comparison of the total decay width and the separate decay widths at each perturbative order before and after the PMC scale setting is presented. The PMC adopts the renormalization group equation to fix the optimal scales of the process. After the PMC scale setting, the scale-dependence for both the total and the separate decay widths are greatly suppressed, and the convergence of perturbative QCD series is improved. By taking the Higgs mass $M_H=125.09\pm 0.21\pm 0.11$ GeV, as recently given by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations, we predict $Γ(H\to gg)|_{\rm mMOM, PMC} = 339.1\pm 1.7^{+4.0}_{-2.4}$ keV, where the first error is for Higgs mass and the second error is the residual scale dependence by varying the initial scale $μ_r\in[M_H/2,4M_H]$.

Predictions for the Top-Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry at High Invariant Pair Mass Using the Principle of Maximum Conformality

The D0 collaboration at FermiLab has recently measured the top-quark pair forward-backward asymmetry in $\bar p p \to t \bar{t} X$ reactions as a function of the $t\bar{t} $ invariant mass $M_{t\bar{t}}$. The D0 result for $A_{\rm FB}(M_{t\bar{t}}>650\, {\rm GeV})$ is smaller than $A_{\rm FB}(M_{t\bar{t}})$ obtained for small values of $M_{t\bar{t}}$, which may indicate an "increasing-decreasing" behavior for $A_{\rm FB}(M_{t\bar{t}}>M_{\rm cut})$. This behavior is not explained using conventional renormalization scale-setting, even by a next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO) QCD calculation -- one predicts a monotonically increasing behavior. In the conventional scale-setting method, one simply guesses a single renormalization scale $μ_r$ for the argument of the QCD running coupling and then varies it over an arbitrary range. However, the conventional method has inherent difficulties. ...... In contrast, if one fixes the scale using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC), the resulting pQCD predictions are renormalization-scheme independent since all of the scheme-dependent $\{β_i\}$-terms in the QCD perturbative series are resummed into the QCD running couplings at each order. ...... In this paper we show that if one applies the PMC to determine the top versus anti-top quark forward-backward asymmetry by properly using the pQCD predictions up to N$^2$LO level, one obtains the predictions without renormalization scheme or scale ambiguities. ...... In addition, the PMC prediction for $A_{\rm FB}(M_{t\bar{t}}> M_{\rm cut})$ shows an "increasing-decreasing" behavior for increasing values of $M_{\rm cut}$ which is not observed in the NLO and N$^2$LO predictions for $A_{\rm FB}(M_{t\bar{t}}> M_{\rm cut})$ with conventional scale-setting. This behavior could be tested by the future more precise measurements at the LHC.

The Importance of Proper Renormalization Scale-Setting for Testing QCD at Colliders

A primary problem for perturbative QCD analyses is how to set the renormalization scale of the QCD running coupling in order to achieve maximally precise fixed-order predictions for physical observables. The Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC) eliminates the ambiguities associated with the conventional renormalization scale-setting procedure, giving predictions which are independent of the choice of renormalization scheme. The scales of the QCD couplings and the effective number of quark flavors are set order by order in the pQCD series. The PMC has a solid theoretical foundation, satisfying the standard renormalization group invariance and all of the the self-consistency conditions derived from the renormalization group......In this brief report, we summarize the results of our recent PMC applications for a number of collider processes, emphasizing their generality and applicability....... These results demonstrate that the application of the PMC systematically eliminates a major theoretical uncertainty for pQCD predictions, thus increasing the sensitivity of the colliders to possible new physics beyond the Standard Model.
