Heaviside Low-Rank Support Matrix Machine

Support matrix machine (SMM) is an emerging classification framework that directly handles matrix-structured observations, thereby avoiding the spatial correlations destroyed by vectorization. However, most existing SMM variants rely on convex or nonconvex surrogate loss functions, which may lead to high sensitivity to noise. To address this issue, we propose a novel Heaviside low-rank SMM model called HL-SMM, which leverages the Heaviside loss instead of the common hinge or ramp losses for robustness. Moreover, the low-rank constraint is adopted to accurately characterize the inherent global structure. In theory, we analyze the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) points and rigorously prove the sufficient and necessary conditions. In algorithms, we develop an effective proximal alternating minimization (PAM) scheme, where all subproblems have closed-form solutions. Extensive experiments on benchmark datasets validate that the proposed HL-SMM achieves superior classification accuracy and robustness compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Independence of $\ell$ for the supports in the Decomposition Theorem

In this note, we prove a result on the independence of $\ell$ for the supports of irreducible perverse sheaves occurring in the Decomposition Theorem, as well as for the family of local systems on each support. It generalizes Gabber's result on the independence of $\ell$ of intersection cohomology to the relative case.

Parity and symmetry in intersection and ordinary cohomology

In this paper, we show that the Galois representations provided by $\ell$-adic cohomology of proper smooth varieties, and more generally by $\ell$-adic intersection cohomology of proper varieties, over any field, are orthogonal or symplectic according to the degree. We deduce this from a preservation result of orthogonal and symplectic pure perverse sheaves by proper direct image. We show moreover that the subgroup of the Grothendieck group generated by orthogonal pure perverse sheaves of even weights and symplectic pure perverse sheaves of odd weights are preserved by Grothendieck's six operations. Over a finite field, we deduce parity and symmetry results for Jordan blocks appearing in the Frobenius action on intersection cohomology of proper varieties, and virtual parity results for the Frobenius action on ordinary cohomology of arbitrary varieties.

Generic Base Change, Artin's Comparison Theorem, and the Decomposition Theorem for Complex Artin stacks

We prove the generic base change theorem for stacks, and give an exposition on the lisse-analytic topos of complex analytic stacks, proving some comparison theorems between various derived categories of complex analytic stacks. This enables us to deduce the decomposition theorem for perverse sheaves on complex Artin stacks with affine stabilizers from the case over finite fields.

L-series of Artin stacks over finite fields

We reprove the Lefschetz trace formula for stacks (in the context of derived categories and the six operations for stacks developed by Laszlo and Olsson), and give the meromorphic continuation of L-series (in particular, zeta functions) of Artin stacks over a finite field. We also give an upper bound for the weights of the cohomology groups of stacks, and an "independence of l" result for a certain class of quotient stacks.
