scHelix: Asymmetric Dual-Stream Integration via Explicit Gene-Level Disentanglement

A critical challenge in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) integration is resolving the tension between eliminating batch effects and maintaining biological fidelity. While recent evidence indicates that batch effects manifest heterogeneously across genes, most existing methods process the transcriptome uniformly, frequently resulting in over-correction and loss of subtle biological signals. To address this, we present scHelix, a dataset-adaptive framework that fundamentally changes how features are processed by explicitly partitioning genes into domain-invariant Anchors and domain-sensitive Variants at the input level. scHelix utilizes a dual-stream sparse diffusion encoder equipped with stop-gradient graph caching to efficiently learn multi-scale structural representations. The core of our approach is a novel asymmetric Align-Refine-Fuse protocol: the unstable Variant stream is first aligned to the robust topology of the Anchor stream, followed by a conservative refinement phase where the Anchor stream absorbs denoised details via bounded residual gating. This divide-and-conquer architecture prevents shortcut learning and ensures robust batch removal without compromising the integrity of biological clusters. Extensive benchmarking demonstrates that scHelix outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Exploring Adapter-based Transfer Learning for Recommender Systems: Empirical Studies and Practical Insights

Adapters, a plug-in neural network module with some tunable parameters, have emerged as a parameter-efficient transfer learning technique for adapting pre-trained models to downstream tasks, especially for natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision (CV) fields. Meanwhile, learning recommendation models directly from raw item modality features -- e.g., texts of NLP and images of CV -- can enable effective and transferable recommender systems (called TransRec). In view of this, a natural question arises: can adapter-based learning techniques achieve parameter-efficient TransRec with good performance? To this end, we perform empirical studies to address several key sub-questions. First, we ask whether the adapter-based TransRec performs comparably to TransRec based on standard full-parameter fine-tuning? does it hold for recommendation with different item modalities, e.g., textual RS and visual RS. If yes, we benchmark these existing adapters, which have been shown to be effective in NLP and CV tasks, in item recommendation tasks. Third, we carefully study several key factors for the adapter-based TransRec in terms of where and how to insert these adapters? Finally, we look at the effects of adapter-based TransRec by either scaling up its source training data or scaling down its target training data. Our paper provides key insights and practical guidance on unified & transferable recommendation -- a less studied recommendation scenario. We release our codes and other materials at: https://github.com/westlake-repl/Adapter4Rec/.

High-dimensional Clustering onto Hamiltonian Cycle

Clustering aims to group unlabelled samples based on their similarities. It has become a significant tool for the analysis of high-dimensional data. However, most of the clustering methods merely generate pseudo labels and thus are unable to simultaneously present the similarities between different clusters and outliers. This paper proposes a new framework called High-dimensional Clustering onto Hamiltonian Cycle (HCHC) to solve the above problems. First, HCHC combines global structure with local structure in one objective function for deep clustering, improving the labels as relative probabilities, to mine the similarities between different clusters while keeping the local structure in each cluster. Then, the anchors of different clusters are sorted on the optimal Hamiltonian cycle generated by the cluster similarities and mapped on the circumference of a circle. Finally, a sample with a higher probability of a cluster will be mapped closer to the corresponding anchor. In this way, our framework allows us to appreciate three aspects visually and simultaneously - clusters (formed by samples with high probabilities), cluster similarities (represented as circular distances), and outliers (recognized as dots far away from all clusters). The experiments illustrate the superiority of HCHC.

An Effective Motion-Centric Paradigm for 3D Single Object Tracking in Point Clouds

3D single object tracking in LiDAR point clouds (LiDAR SOT) plays a crucial role in autonomous driving. Current approaches all follow the Siamese paradigm based on appearance matching. However, LiDAR point clouds are usually textureless and incomplete, which hinders effective appearance matching. Besides, previous methods greatly overlook the critical motion clues among targets. In this work, beyond 3D Siamese tracking, we introduce a motion-centric paradigm to handle LiDAR SOT from a new perspective. Following this paradigm, we propose a matching-free two-stage tracker M^2-Track. At the 1st-stage, M^2-Track localizes the target within successive frames via motion transformation. Then it refines the target box through motion-assisted shape completion at the 2nd-stage. Due to the motion-centric nature, our method shows its impressive generalizability with limited training labels and provides good differentiability for end-to-end cycle training. This inspires us to explore semi-supervised LiDAR SOT by incorporating a pseudo-label-based motion augmentation and a self-supervised loss term. Under the fully-supervised setting, extensive experiments confirm that M^2-Track significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-arts on three large-scale datasets while running at 57FPS (~3%, ~11% and ~22% precision gains on KITTI, NuScenes, and Waymo Open Dataset respectively). While under the semi-supervised setting, our method performs on par with or even surpasses its fully-supervised counterpart using fewer than half of the labels from KITTI. Further analysis verifies each component's effectiveness and shows the motion-centric paradigm's promising potential for auto-labeling and unsupervised domain adaptation.

Roadmap towards Meta-being

Metaverse is a perpetual and persistent multi-user environment that merges physical reality with digital virtuality. It is widely considered to be the next revolution of the Internet. Digital humans are a critical part of Metaverse. They are driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and deployed in many applications. However, it is a complex process to construct digital humans which can be well combined with the Metaverse elements, such as immersion creation, connection construction, and economic operation. In this paper, we present the roadmap of Meta-being to construct the digital human in Metaverse. In this roadmap, we first need to model and render a digital human model for immersive display in Metaverse. Then we add a dialogue system with audio, facial expressions, and movements for this digital human. Finally, we can apply our digital human in the fields of the economy in Metaverse with the consideration of security. We also construct a digital human in Metaverse to implement our roadmap. Numerous advanced technologies and devices, such as AI, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and motion capture, are used in our implementation. This digital human can be applied to many applications, such as education and exhibition.

EVNet: An Explainable Deep Network for Dimension Reduction

Dimension reduction (DR) is commonly utilized to capture the intrinsic structure and transform high-dimensional data into low-dimensional space while retaining meaningful properties of the original data. It is used in various applications, such as image recognition, single-cell sequencing analysis, and biomarker discovery. However, contemporary parametric-free and parametric DR techniques suffer from several significant shortcomings, such as the inability to preserve global and local features and the pool generalization performance. On the other hand, regarding explainability, it is crucial to comprehend the embedding process, especially the contribution of each part to the embedding process, while understanding how each feature affects the embedding results that identify critical components and help diagnose the embedding process. To address these problems, we have developed a deep neural network method called EVNet, which provides not only excellent performance in structural maintainability but also explainability to the DR therein. EVNet starts with data augmentation and a manifold-based loss function to improve embedding performance. The explanation is based on saliency maps and aims to examine the trained EVNet parameters and contributions of components during the embedding process. The proposed techniques are integrated with a visual interface to help the user to adjust EVNet to achieve better DR performance and explainability. The interactive visual interface makes it easier to illustrate the data features, compare different DR techniques, and investigate DR. An in-depth experimental comparison shows that EVNet consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in both performance measures and explainability.

A Data-Driven Approach for Mapping Multivariate Data to Color

A wide variety of color schemes have been devised for mapping scalar data to color. Some use the data value to index a color scale. Others assign colors to different, usually blended disjoint materials, to handle areas where materials overlap. A number of methods can map low-dimensional data to color, however, these methods do not scale to higher dimensional data. Likewise, schemes that take a more artistic approach through color mixing and the like also face limits when it comes to the number of variables they can encode. We address the challenge of mapping multivariate data to color and avoid these limitations at the same time. It is a data driven method, which first gauges the similarity of the attributes and then arranges them according to the periphery of a convex 2D color space, such as HSL. The color of a multivariate data sample is then obtained via generalized barycentric coordinate (GBC) interpolation.
