Near-Field Communication with Massive Movable Antennas: An Electrostatic Equilibrium Perspective

Recent advancements in large-scale position-reconfigurable antennas have opened up new dimensions to effectively utilize the spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs) of wireless channels. However, the deployment of existing antenna placement schemes is primarily hindered by their limited scalability and frequently overlooked near-field effects in large-scale antenna systems. In this paper, we propose a novel antenna placement approach tailored for near-field massive multiple-input multiple-output systems, which effectively exploits the spatial DoFs to enhance spectral efficiency. For that purpose, we first reformulate the antenna placement problem in the angular domain, resulting in a weighted Fekete problem. We then derive the optimality condition and reveal that the {optimal} antenna placement is in principle an electrostatic equilibrium problem. To further reduce the computational complexity of numerical optimization, we propose an ordinary differential equation (ODE)-based framework to efficiently solve the equilibrium problem. In particular, the optimal antenna positions are characterized by the roots of the polynomial solutions to specific ODEs in the normalized angular domain. By simply adopting a two-step eigenvalue decomposition (EVD) approach, the optimal antenna positions can be efficiently obtained. Furthermore, we perform an asymptotic analysis when the antenna size tends to infinity, which yields a closed-form solution. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme efficiently harnesses the spatial DoFs of near-field channels with prominent gains in spectral efficiency and maintains robustness against system parameter mismatches. In addition, the derived asymptotic closed-form {solution} closely approaches the theoretical optimum across a wide range of practical scenarios.

Multimodal Mixture-of-Experts for ISAC in Low-Altitude Wireless Networks

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is a key enabler for low-altitude wireless networks (LAWNs), providing simultaneous environmental perception and data transmission in complex aerial scenarios. By combining heterogeneous sensing modalities such as visual, radar, lidar, and positional information, multimodal ISAC can improve both situational awareness and robustness of LAWNs. However, most existing multimodal fusion approaches use static fusion strategies that treat all modalities equally and cannot adapt to channel heterogeneity or time-varying modality reliability in dynamic low-altitude environments. To address this fundamental limitation, we propose a mixture-of-experts (MoE) framework for multimodal ISAC in LAWNs. Each modality is processed by a dedicated expert network, and a lightweight gating module adaptively assigns fusion weights according to the instantaneous informativeness and reliability of each modality. To improve scalability under the stringent energy constraints of aerial platforms, we further develop a sparse MoE variant that selectively activates only a subset of experts, thereby reducing computation overhead while preserving the benefits of adaptive fusion. Comprehensive simulations on three typical ISAC tasks in LAWNs demonstrate that the proposed frameworks consistently outperform conventional multimodal fusion baselines in terms of learning performance and training sample efficiency.

Secrecy Analysis for MISO Broadcast Systems with Regularized Zero-Forcing Precoding

As an effective way to enhance the physical layer security (PLS) for the broadcast channel (BC), regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding has attracted much attention. However, the reliability performance, i.e., secrecy outage probability (SOP), of RZF is not well investigated in the literature. In this paper, we characterize the secrecy performance of RZF precoding in the large multiple-input single-output (MISO) broadcast system. For this purpose, we first consider a central limit theorem (CLT) for the joint distribution of the users' signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the eavesdropper's (Eve's) signal-to-noise ratio (ESNR) by leveraging random matrix theory (RMT). The result is then utilized to obtain a closed-form approximation for the ergodic secrecy rate (ESR) and SOP of three typical scenarios: the case with only external Eves, the case with only internal Eves, and that with both. The derived results are then used to evaluate the percentage of users in secrecy outage and the required number of transmit antennas to achieve a positive secrecy rate. It is shown that, with equally-capable Eves, the secrecy loss caused by external Eves is higher than that caused by internal Eves. Numerical simulations validate the accuracy of the theoretical results.

ROI-based Deep Image Compression with Implicit Bit Allocation

Region of Interest (ROI)-based image compression has rapidly developed due to its ability to maintain high fidelity in important regions while reducing data redundancy. However, existing compression methods primarily apply masks to suppress background information before quantization. This explicit bit allocation strategy, which uses hard gating, significantly impacts the statistical distribution of the entropy model, thereby limiting the coding performance of the compression model. In response, this work proposes an efficient ROI-based deep image compression model with implicit bit allocation. To better utilize ROI masks for implicit bit allocation, this paper proposes a novel Mask-Guided Feature Enhancement (MGFE) module, comprising a Region-Adaptive Attention (RAA) block and a Frequency-Spatial Collaborative Attention (FSCA) block. This module allows for flexible bit allocation across different regions while enhancing global and local features through frequencyspatial domain collaboration. Additionally, we use dual decoders to separately reconstruct foreground and background images, enabling the coding network to optimally balance foreground enhancement and background quality preservation in a datadriven manner. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to utilize implicit bit allocation for high-quality regionadaptive coding. Experiments on the COCO2017 dataset show that our implicit-based image compression method significantly outperforms explicit bit allocation approaches in rate-distortion performance, achieving optimal results while maintaining satisfactory visual quality in the reconstructed background regions.

Adaptive Sensing Performance Design for Enhancing Secure Communication in Networked ISAC Systems

The channel state information (CSI) of an eavesdropper is crucial for physical layer security (PLS) design, but it is difficult to obtain due to the passive and non-cooperative nature of the eavesdropper. To this end, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) offers a novel solution by estimating the CSI of the eavesdropper based on sensing information. However, existing studies normally impose explicit and fixed sensing performance requirement without considering the varying communication conditions, which hinders the system from fully exploiting the synergy between sensing and communication. To address this issue, this paper proposes sensing-enhanced secure communication with adaptive sensing performance. Specifically, we formulate the sensing performance implicitly in the information leakage rate and adaptively optimize it for the minimization of the power consumption, offering enhanced flexibility and adaptability in sensing performance. We consider both centralized and decentralized designs to thoroughly investigate the impact of network structure on system performance and complexity. Specifically, we devise a block coordinate descent (BCD)-based method for centralized design. For decentralized design, we develop an optimization framework based on consensus alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to reduce complexity and information exchange overhead. Experimental results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed implicit sensing performance requirement design due to its capability to adaptively adjust the sensing performance to enhance the system performance for varying system configurations.

FedLAM: Low-latency Wireless Federated Learning via Layer-wise Adaptive Modulation

In wireless federated learning (FL), the clients need to transmit the high-dimensional deep neural network (DNN) parameters through bandwidth-limited channels, which causes the communication latency issue. In this paper, we propose a layer-wise adaptive modulation scheme to save the communication latency. Unlike existing works which assign the same modulation level for all DNN layers, we consider the layers' importance which provides more freedom to save the latency. The proposed scheme can automatically decide the optimal modulation levels for different DNN layers. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can save up to 73.9% of communication latency compared with the existing schemes.

Fluid Antenna Meets RIS: Random Matrix Analysis and Two-Timescale Design for Multi-User Communications

The reconfigurability of fluid antenna systems (FASs) and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) provides significant flexibility in optimizing channel conditions by jointly adjusting the positions of fluid antennas and the phase shifts of RISs. However, it is challenging to acquire the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) for both fluid antennas and RISs, while frequent adjustment of antenna positions and phase shifts will significantly increase the system complexity. To tackle this issue, this paper investigates the two-timescale design for FAS-RIS multi-user systems with linear precoding, where only the linear precoder design requires instantaneous CSI of the end-to-end channel, while the FAS and RIS optimization relies on statistical CSI. The main challenge comes from the complex structure of channel and inverse operations in linear precoding, such as regularized zero-forcing (RZF) and zero-forcing (ZF). Leveraging on random matrix theory (RMT), we first investigate the fundamental limits of FAS-RIS systems with RZF/ZF precoding by deriving the ergodic sum rate (ESR). This result is utilized to determine the minimum number of selected antennas to achieve a given ESR. Based on the evaluation result, we propose an algorithm to jointly optimize the antenna selection, regularization factor of RZF, and phase shifts at the RIS. Numerical results validate the accuracy of performance evaluation and demonstrate that the performance gain brought by joint FAS and RIS design is more pronounced with a larger number of users.

Joint Beamforming and Antenna Position Optimization for Fluid Antenna-Assisted MU-MIMO Networks

The fluid antenna system (FAS) is a disruptive tech-nology for future wireless communication networks. This paper considers the joint optimization of beamforming matrices and antenna positions for weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization in fluid antenna (FA)-assisted multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) networks, which presents significant chal-lenges due to the strong coupling between beamforming and FA positions, the non-concavity of the WSR objective function, and high computational complexity. To address these challenges, we first propose a novel block coordinate ascent (BCA)-based method that employs matrix fractional programming techniques to reformulate the original complex problem into a more tractable form. Then, we develop a parallel majorization maximization (MM) algorithm capable of optimizing all FA positions simul-taneously. To further reduce computational costs, we propose a decentralized implementation based on the decentralized base-band processing (DBP) architecture. Simulation results demon-strate that our proposed algorithm not only achieves significant WSR improvements over conventional MIMO networks but also outperforms the existing method. Moreover, the decentralized implementation substantially reduces computation time while maintaining similar performance compared with the centralized implementation.

AI and Deep Learning for Terahertz Ultra-Massive MIMO: From Model-Driven Approaches to Foundation Models

This study explored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in addressing the challenges posed by terahertz ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) systems. It begins by outlining the characteristics of terahertz UM-MIMO systems and identifies three primary challenges for transceiver design: computational complexity, modeling difficulty, and measurement limitations. The study posits that AI provides a promising solution to these challenges. Three systematic research roadmaps are proposed for developing AI algorithms tailored to terahertz UM-MIMO systems. The first roadmap, model-driven deep learning (DL), emphasizes the importance of leveraging available domain knowledge and advocates the adoption of AI only to enhance bottleneck modules within an established signal processing or optimization framework. Four essential steps are discussed: algorithmic frameworks, basis algorithms, loss-function design, and neural architecture design. The second roadmap presents channel state information (CSI) foundation models, aimed at unifying the design of different transceiver modules by focusing on their shared foundation, that is, the wireless channel. The training of a single compact foundation model is proposed to estimate the score function of wireless channels, which serve as a versatile prior for designing a wide variety of transceiver modules. Four essential steps are outlined: general frameworks, conditioning, site-specific adaptation, joint design of CSI foundation models, and model-driven DL. The third roadmap aims to explore potential directions for applying pretrained large language models (LLMs) to terahertz UM-MIMO systems. Several application scenarios are envisioned, including LLM-based estimation, optimization, search, network management, and protocol understanding. Finally, the study highlights open problems and future research directions.

No Eigenvalues Outside the Limiting Support of Generally Correlated and Noncentral Sample Covariance Matrices

Spectral properties of random matrices play an important role in statistics, machine learning, communications, and many other areas. Engaging results regarding the convergence of the empirical spectral distribution (ESD) and the ``no-eigenvalue'' property have been obtained for random matrices with different correlation structures. However, the related spectral analysis for generally correlated and noncentral random matrices is still incomplete, and this paper aims to fill this research gap. Specifically, we consider matrices whose columns are independent but with non-zero means and non-identical correlations. Under high-dimensional asymptotics where both the number of rows and columns grow simultaneously to infinity, we first establish the almost sure convergence of the ESD for the concerned random matrices to a deterministic limit, assuming mild conditions. Furthermore, we prove that with probability 1, no eigenvalues will appear in any closed interval outside the support of the limiting distribution for matrices with sufficiently large dimensions. The above results can be applied to different areas such as statistics, wireless communications, and signal processing. In this paper, we apply the derived results to two communication scenarios: 1) We determine the limiting performance of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with linear minimum mean-square error receivers; and 2) We establish the invertibility of zero-forcing precoding matrices in downlink MIMO systems, providing theoretical guarantees.

Joint Radiation Power, Antenna Position, and Beamforming Optimization for Pinching-Antenna Systems with Motion Power Consumption

Pinching-antenna systems (PASS) have been recently proposed to improve the performance of wireless networks by reconfiguring both the large-scale and small-scale channel conditions. However, existing studies ignore the physical constraints of antenna placement and assume fixed antenna radiation power. To fill this research gap, this paper investigates the design of PASS taking into account the motion power consumption of pinching-antennas (PAs) and the impact of adjustable antenna radiation power. To that end, we minimize the average power consumption for a given quality-of-service (QoS) requirement, by jointly optimizing the antenna positions, antenna radiation power ratios, and transmit beamforming. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first work to consider radiation power optimization in PASS, which provides an additional degree of freedom (DoF) for system design. The cases with both continuous and discrete antenna placement are considered, where the main challenge lies in the fact that the antenna positions affect both the magnitude and phase of the channel coefficients of PASS, making system optimization very challenging. To tackle the resulting unique obstacles, an alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based framework is proposed to solve the problem for continuous antenna movement, while its discrete counterpart is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem and solved by the block coordinate descent (BCD) method. Simulation results validate the performance enhancement achieved by incorporating PA movement power assumption and adjustable radiation power into PASS design, while also demonstrating the efficiency of the proposed optimization framework. The benefits of PASS over conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems in mitigating the large-scale path loss and inter-user interference is also revealed.

A Tractable Approach to Massive Communication and Ubiquitous Connectivity in 6G Standardization

The full-scale 6G standardization has attracted considerable recent attention, especially since the first 3GPP-wide 6G workshop held in March 2025. To understand the practical and fundamental values of 6G and facilitate its standardization, it is crucial to explore the theoretical limits of spectrum, energy, and coverage efficiency considering practical hardware and signaling constraints. In this paper, we present a mean-field-approximation-based investigation on two out of six use case scenarios defined by IMT-2030, namely, massive communication and ubiquitous connectivity. Being aware of the limitation in interference cancellation owing to constrained cost and hardware complexity, we investigate the spectrum reuse architecture in both usage scenarios. We propose a tractable spectrum reuse with low signaling overhead consumed for channel estimation and channel state information (CSI) feedback. Our analysis indicates that the massive communication over cellular and device-to-device (D2D) networks can benefit from channel orthogonalization, while it is unnecessary to share the CSI of interfering links. Moreover, deploying relays or movable base stations, e.g. unmanned aerial vehicle, yields substantial energy and spectrum gain for ubiquitous connectivity, despite introducing interference. As such, the mean-field-optimization-based evaluation is expected to positively impact 6G and NextG standardization in 3GPP and other standardization bodies.

Client Selection for Federated Policy Optimization with Environment Heterogeneity

The development of Policy Iteration (PI) has inspired many recent algorithms for Reinforcement Learning (RL), including several policy gradient methods that gained both theoretical soundness and empirical success on a variety of tasks. The theory of PI is rich in the context of centralized learning, but its study under the federated setting is still in the infant stage. This paper investigates the federated version of Approximate PI (API) and derives its error bound, taking into account the approximation error introduced by environment heterogeneity. We theoretically prove that a proper client selection scheme can reduce this error bound. Based on the theoretical result, we propose a client selection algorithm to alleviate the additional approximation error caused by environment heterogeneity. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms other biased and unbiased client selection methods on the federated mountain car problem, the Mujoco Hopper problem, and the SUMO-based autonomous vehicle training problem by effectively selecting clients with a lower level of heterogeneity from the population distribution.

The Actor-Critic Update Order Matters for PPO in Federated Reinforcement Learning

In the context of Federated Reinforcement Learning (FRL), applying Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) faces challenges related to the update order of its actor and critic due to the aggregation step occurring between successive iterations. In particular, when local actors are updated based on local critic estimations, the algorithm becomes vulnerable to data heterogeneity. As a result, the conventional update order in PPO (critic first, then actor) may cause heterogeneous gradient directions among clients, hindering convergence to a globally optimal policy. To address this issue, we propose FedRAC, which reverses the update order (actor first, then critic) to eliminate the divergence of critics from different clients. Theoretical analysis shows that the convergence bound of FedRAC is immune to data heterogeneity under mild conditions, i.e., bounded level of heterogeneity and accurate policy evaluation. Empirical results indicate that the proposed algorithm obtains higher cumulative rewards and converges more rapidly in five experiments, including three classical RL environments and a highly heterogeneous autonomous driving scenario using the SUMO traffic simulator.

Fluid Antenna-Assisted MU-MIMO Systems with Decentralized Baseband Processing

The fluid antenna system (FAS) has emerged as a disruptive technology, offering unprecedented degrees of freedom (DoF) for wireless communication systems. However, optimizing fluid antenna (FA) positions entails significant computational costs, especially when the number of FAs is large. To address this challenge, we introduce a decentralized baseband processing (DBP) architecture to FAS, which partitions the FA array into clusters and enables parallel processing. Based on the DBP architecture, we formulate a weighted sum rate (WSR) maximization problem through joint beamforming and FA position design for FA-assisted multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. To solve the WSR maximization problem, we propose a novel decentralized block coordinate ascent (BCA)-based algorithm that leverages matrix fractional programming (FP) and majorization-minimization (MM) methods. The proposed decentralized algorithm achieves low computational, communication, and storage costs, thus unleashing the potential of the DBP architecture. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm under the DBP architecture reduces computational time by over 70% compared to centralized architectures with negligible WSR performance loss.

Accurate and Fast Channel Estimation for Fluid Antenna Systems with Diffusion Models

Fluid antenna systems (FAS) offer enhanced spatial diversity for next-generation wireless systems. However, acquiring accurate channel state information (CSI) remains challenging due to the large number of reconfigurable ports and the limited availability of radio-frequency (RF) chains -- particularly in high-dimensional FAS scenarios. To address this challenge, we propose an efficient posterior sampling-based channel estimator that leverages a diffusion model (DM) with a simplified U-Net architecture to capture the spatial correlation structure of two-dimensional FAS channels. The DM is initially trained offline in an unsupervised way and then applied online as a learned implicit prior to reconstruct CSI from partial observations via posterior sampling through a denoising diffusion restoration model (DDRM). To accelerate the online inference, we introduce a skipped sampling strategy that updates only a subset of latent variables during the sampling process, thereby reducing the computational cost with minimal accuracy degradation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves significantly higher estimation accuracy and over 20x speedup compared to state-of-the-art compressed sensing-based methods, highlighting its potential for practical deployment in high-dimensional FAS.

Multimodal Deep Learning-Empowered Beam Prediction in Future THz ISAC Systems

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems operating at terahertz (THz) bands are envisioned to enable both ultra-high data-rate communication and precise environmental awareness for next-generation wireless networks. However, the narrow width of THz beams makes them prone to misalignment and necessitates frequent beam prediction in dynamic environments. Multimodal sensing, which integrates complementary modalities such as camera images, positional data, and radar measurements, has recently emerged as a promising solution for proactive beam prediction. Nevertheless, existing multimodal approaches typically employ static fusion architectures that cannot adjust to varying modality reliability and contributions, thereby degrading predictive performance and robustness. To address this challenge, we propose a novel and efficient multimodal mixture-of-experts (MoE) deep learning framework for proactive beam prediction in THz ISAC systems. The proposed multimodal MoE framework employs multiple modality-specific expert networks to extract representative features from individual sensing modalities, and dynamically fuses them using adaptive weights generated by a gating network according to the instantaneous reliability of each modality. Simulation results in realistic vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) scenarios demonstrate that the proposed MoE framework outperforms traditional static fusion methods and unimodal baselines in terms of prediction accuracy and adaptability, highlighting its potential in practical THz ISAC systems with ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO).
