Ancient solutions of Ricci flow on spheres and generalized Hopf fibrations

Ancient solutions arise in the study of Ricci flow singularities. Motivated by the work of Fateev on 3-dimensional ancient solutions we construct high dimensional ancient solutions to Ricci flow on spheres and complex projective spaces as well as the twistor spaces over a compact quaternion-Kahler manifold. Differing from Fateev's examples most of our examples are non-collapsed. The construction of this paper, different from the ad hoc anastz of Fateev, is systematic, generalizing (as well as unifying) the previous constructions of Einstein metrics by Bourguignon-Karcher, Jensen, and Ziller in the sense that the existence problem to a backward nonlinear parabolic PDE is reduced to the study of nonlinear ODE systems. The key step of solving the reduced nonlinear ODE system is to find suitable monotonic and conserved quantities under Ricci flow with symmetry. Besides supplying new possible singularity models for Ricci flow on spheres and projective spaces, our solutions are counter-examples to some folklore conjectures on ancient solutions of Ricci flow on compact manifolds. As a by-product, we infer that some nonstandard Einstein metrics on spheres and complex projective spaces are unstable fixed points of the Ricci flow.

Spectrum of the Laplacian on Quaternionic Kahler Manifolds

Let $M^{4n}$ be a complete quaternionic Kähler manifold with scalar curvature bounded below by $-16n(n+2)$. We get a sharp estimate for the first eigenvalue $λ_1(M)$ of the Laplacian which is $λ_1(M)\le (2n+1)^2$. If the equality holds, then either $M$ has only one end, or $M$ is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}\times N$ with N given by a compact manifold. Moreover, if $M$ is of bounded curvature, $M$ is covered by the quaterionic hyperbolic space $\mathbb{QH}^n$ and $N$ is a compact quotient of the generalized Heisenberg group. When $λ_1(M)\ge \frac{8(n+2)}3$, we also prove that $M$ must have only one end with infinite volume.

Associative Cones and Integrable Systems

We identify R^7 as the pure imaginary part of octonions. Then the multiplication in octonions gives a natural almost complex structure for the unit 6-sphere. It is known that a cone over a surface M in S^6 is an associative submanifold of R^7 if and only if M is almost complex in S^6. In this paper, we show that the Gauss-Codazzi equation for almost complex curves in S^6 is the equation for primitive maps associated to the 6-symmetric space G_2/T^2, and use this to explain some of the known results. Moreover, the equation for S^1-symmetric almost complex curves in S^6 is the periodic Toda lattice associated to G_2, and a discussion of periodic solutions is given.
