The combined limits of large bulk viscosity and small angular viscosity for the 2D compressible micropolar fluid equations

This paper is concerned with the combined limits of large bulk viscosity and small angular viscosity for the two-dimensional compressible micropolar fluid equations. We first establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions to the Cauchy problem with large bulk viscosity, when the initial velocity is well-prepared in the sense that $\sqrtν\|{\rm div} u_0\|_{L^2}$ is uniformly bounded. The global a priori estimates obtained are uniform with respect to both the bulk viscosity $ν$ and the angular viscosity $\varepsilon$. Based on these uniform estimates, we then justify the combined limits as $ν\to\infty$ and $\varepsilon\to0$, and show that the solutions of the compressible micropolar system converge to those of the viscous and non-diffusive incompressible micropolar system. The convergence rates for the incompressible limit and the vanishing angular viscosity limit are also derived. In particular, the convergence rate for the incompressible limit is shown to be of order $ν^{-1/4}$ in general, and can be improved to $ν^{-1/2}$ under an additional decay condition on the initial density. Compared with previous works, the vanishing angular viscosity limit is established without the extra technical assumption $\lim_{\varepsilon\to0+}ζ/\varepsilon^α<\infty$ for some $1/2\leq α<\infty$, which extends the relevant results from the incompressible case to the compressible setting. As a by-product, the global regularity of large solutions for the 2D compressible micropolar equations with/without angular viscosity is obtained, provided the bulk viscosity is large enough.

UG-UMRE: Uncertainty-Guided Modality Augmentation and Distributional Calibration for Unified Multimodal Relation Extraction

Unified Multimodal Relation Extraction (UMRE) aims to identify intra-modal and cross-modal relations between textual entities and visual objects. However, existing UMRE studies still encounter two critical issues: ignoring inherent aleatoric uncertainty causes noise propagation, and deep-seated heterogeneity between distinct modal distributions hinders alignment. To address these issues, we propose the Uncertainty-Guided UMRE Network (UG-UMRE). Specifically, we design an Uncertainty-Driven Unimodal Augmentation (UDUA) module, which models features as Gaussian distributions based on the Variational Information Bottleneck. By incorporating an uncertainty-aware self-supervised contrastive learning mechanism, UDUA effectively filters out noise while maintaining semantic consistency. Furthermore, we introduce the Joint Aleatoric Uncertainty Alignment (JAUA) module as a global semantic pre-calibration mechanism. JAUA leverages probabilistic distribution consistency to construct a shared latent space, eliminating the distributional gap by synchronizing cross-modal statistical properties, thereby laying a robust foundation for fine-grained interaction. Experiments on three benchmark datasets (UMRE, MORE, and MNRE) demonstrate that UG-UMRE achieves state-of-the-art performance. Further analysis validates the pluggable and effective performance of the proposed UDUA and JAUA modules.

Global regularity and incompressible limit of 2D compressible Navier-Stokes equations with large bulk viscosity

In this paper, we study the global regularity of large solutions with vacuum to the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations on $\mathbb{T}^{2}=\mathbb{R}^{2}/\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, when the volume (bulk) viscosity coefficient $ν$ is sufficiently large. It firstly fixes a flaw in \cite[Proposition 3.3]{Danchin2023}, which concerns the $ν$-independent global $t$-weighted estimates of the solutions. Amending the proof requires non-trivially mathematical analysis. As a by-product, the incompressible limit with an explicit rate of convergence is shown, when the volume viscosity tends to infinity. In contrast to \cite[Theorem 1.3]{Danchin2019} and \cite[Corollary 1.1]{DM2017} where vacuum was excluded, the convergence rate of the incompressible limit is obtained for the global solutions with vacuum, based on some $t$-growth and singular $t$-weighted estimates.

Cosmic test of sTGC detector prototype made in China for ATLAS experiment upgrade

Following the Higgs particle discovery, the Large Hadron Collider complex will be upgraded in several phases allowing the luminosity to increase to $7 \times 10^{34}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. In order to adapt the ATLAS detector to the higher luminosity environment after the upgrade, part of the ATLAS muon end-cap system, the Small Wheel, will be replaced by the New Small Wheel. The New Small Wheel includes two kinds of detectors: small-strip Thin Gap Chambers and Micromegas. Shandong University, part of the ATLAS collaboration, participates in the construction of the ATLAS New Small Wheel by developing, producing and testing the performance of part of the small-strip Thin Gap Chambers. This paper describes the construction and cosmic-ray testing of small-strip Thin Gap Chambers in Shandong University.

The Study of Multi-Layer sTGC Test System for ATLAS Phase-I upgrade

A completely New Small Wheel (NSW) will be constructed for ATLAS Phase-1 upgrade. Small-Strip Thin-Gap-Chamber (sTGC) will devote to the trigger function of NSW. A full-size sTGC quadruplet consists of 4 layers, and will need 4 pad Front-End-Boards and 4 strip Front-End-Boards for sTGC signals readout. The 8 boards should be readout simultaneously at a time. This paper presents the study of multi-layer sTGC test system, a FEB Driver Card (FEBDC) is designed for pFEB and sFEB boards handling. The design and test of FEBDC are described in details.

Scanning Test System Prototype of p/sFEB for the ATLAS Phase-I sTGC Trigger Upgrade

The Pad Front End Board (pFEB) and the Strip Front End Board (sFEB) are developed for the ATLAS Phase-I sTGC Trigger Upgrade. The pFEB is used to to gather and analyze pads trigger, and the sFEB is developed to accept the pad trigger to define the regions-of-interest for strips readout. The performance of p/sFEBs must be confirmed before they are mounted on the sTGC detector. We will present the scanning test system prototype which is designed according to the test requirements of the p/sFEB. In this test system prototype, a simulation signal board is developed to generate different types of signal to the p/sFEB. PC software and FPGA XADC cooperate to achieve the scan test of analog parameter.

Global well-posedness of the 2D nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows with vacuum

This paper concerns the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional (2D) nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows on the whole space $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ with vacuum as far field density. It is proved that the 2D nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows admits a unique global strong solution provided the initial data density and the gradient of orientation decay not too slow at infinity, and the initial orientation satisfies a geometric condition (see \eqref{eq1.3}). In particular, the initial data can be arbitrarily large and the initial density may contain vacuum states and even have compact support. As a byproduct, the large time behavior of the solution is also obtained.

Global well-posedness for the two-dimensional equations of nonhomogeneous incompressible liquid crystal flows with nonnegative density

In this paper, the authors first establish the global well-posedness of strong solutions of the simplified Ericksen-Leslie model for nonhomogeneous incompressible nematic liquid crystal flows in two dimensions if the initial data satisfies some smallness condition. It is worth pointing out that the initial density is allowed to contain vacuum states and the initial velocity can be arbitrarily large. We also present a Serrin's type criterion, depending only on $\nabla d$, for the breakdown of local strong solutions. As a byproduct, the global strong solutions with large initial data are obtained, provided the macroscopic molecular orientation of the liquid crystal materials satisfies a natural geometric angle condition (cf. [19])

Studies on European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). Part 1: Variations of wood colour parameters

Colour parameters of European beech were measured using CIELab system. 103 logs from 87 trees in 9 sites were cut into boards to study the variations of wood colour parameters. Both site and tree effect on colour were observed. Patterns of red heartwood occurrence were defined. When excepting red heartwood there was still a highly significant effect of site and tree; differences remained after veneer processing. Axial variations were small, except very near the pith or in red heartwood, suggesting possible early selection at periphery under colour criteria. Red heartwood is darker, redder and more yellow than normal peripheral wood.
