Asymptotic-Preserving Schemes for Multiscale Physical Problems

We present the asymptotic transitions from microscopic to macroscopic physics, their computational challenges and the Asymptotic-Preserving (AP) strategies to efficiently compute multiscale physical problems. Specifically, we will first study the asymptotic transition from quantum to classical mechanics, from classical mechanics to kinetic theory, and then from kinetic theory to hydrodynamics. We then review some representative AP schemes that mimic, at the discrete level, these asymptotic transitions, hence can be used crossing scales and, in particular, capture the macroscopic behavior without resolving numerically the microscopic physical scale.

Bayesian User Localization and Tracking for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided MIMO Systems

In this paper, we study the user localization and tracking problem in the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) and multiple RISs are deployed to assist the localization and tracking of a multi-antenna user. By establishing a probability transition model for user mobility, we develop a message-passing algorithm, termed the Bayesian user localization and tracking (BULT) algorithm, to estimate and track the user position and the angle-of-arrival (AoAs) at the user in an online fashion. We also derive Bayesian Cramér Rao bound (BCRB) to characterize the fundamental performance limit of the considered tracking problem. To improve the tracking performance, we optimize the beamforming design at the BS and the RISs to minimize the derived BCRB. Simulation results show that our BULT algorithm can perform close to the derived BCRB, and significantly outperforms the counterpart algorithms without exploiting the temporal correlation of the user location.

Environment-Aware Beam Selection for IRS-Aided Communication with Channel Knowledge Map

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided communication is a promising technology for beyond 5G (B5G) systems, to reconfigure the radio environment proactively. However, IRS-aided communication in practice requires efficient channel estimation or passive beam training, whose overhead and complexity increase drastically with the number of reflecting elements/beam directions. To tackle this challenge, we propose in this paper a novel environment-aware joint active and passive beam selection scheme for IRS-aided wireless communication, based on the new concept of channel knowledge map (CKM). Specifically, by utilizing both the location information of the user equipment (UE), which is readily available in contemporary wireless systems with ever-increasing accuracy, and the environment information offered by CKM, the proposed scheme achieves efficient beam selection with either no real-time training required (training-free beam selection) or only moderate training overhead (light-training beam selection). Numerical results based on practical channels obtained using commercial ray tracing software are presented, which demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme over various benchmark schemes.

Improving Sum-Rate of Cell-Free Massive MIMO with Expanded Compute-and-Forward

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) employs a large number of distributed access points (APs) to serve a small number of user equipments (UEs) via the same time/frequency resource. Due to the strong macro diversity gain, cell-free massive MIMO can considerably improve the achievable sum-rate compared to conventional cellular massive MIMO. However, the performance of cell-free massive MIMO is upper limited by inter-user interference (IUI) when employing simple maximum ratio combining (MRC) at receivers. To harness IUI, the expanded compute-and-forward (ECF) framework is adopted. In particular, we propose power control algorithms for the parallel computation and successive computation in the ECF framework, respectively, to exploit the performance gain and then improve the system performance. Furthermore, we propose an AP selection scheme and the application of different decoding orders for the successive computation. Finally, numerical results demonstrate that ECF frameworks outperform the conventional CF and MRC frameworks in terms of achievable sum-rate.

A random batch Ewald method for charged particles in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble

We develop an accurate, highly efficient and scalable random batch Ewald (RBE) method to conduct simulations in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble (the NPT ensemble) for charged particles in a periodic box. After discretizing the Langevin equations of motion derived using suitable Lagrangians, the RBE method builds the mini-batch strategy into the Fourier space in the Ewald summation for the pressure and forces so the computational cost is reduced from $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N)$ per time step. We implement the method in the LAMMPS package and report accurate simulation results for both dynamical quantities and statistics for equilibrium for typical systems including all-atom bulk water and a semi-isotropic membrane system. Numerical simulations on massive supercomputing cluster are also performed to show promising CPU efficiency of RBE.

Random batch particle methods for the homogeneous Landau equation

We consider in this paper random batch particle methods for efficiently solving the homogeneous Landau equation in plasma physics. The methods are stochastic variations of the particle methods proposed by Carrillo et al. [J. Comput. Phys.: X 7: 100066, 2020] using the random batch strategy. The collisions only take place inside the small but randomly selected batches so that the computational cost is reduced to $O(N)$ per time step. Meanwhile, our methods can preserve the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and the decay of entropy. Several numerical examples are performed to validate our methods.

Superscalability of the random batch Ewald method

Coulomb interaction, following an inverse-square force-law, quantifies the amount of force between two stationary and electrically charged particles. The long-range nature of Coulomb interactions poses a major challenge to molecular dynamics simulations which are major tools for problems at the nano-/micro- scale. Various algorithms are developed to calculate the pairwise Coulomb interactions to a linear scaling but the poor scalability limits the size of simulated systems. Here, we conduct an efficient molecular dynamics algorithm with the random batch Ewald method on all-atom systems where the complete Fourier components in the Coulomb interaction are replaced by randomly selected mini-batches. By simulating the $N$-body systems up to 100 million particles using $10$ thousand CPU cores, we show that this algorithm furnishes $O(N)$ complexity, almost perfect scalability and an order of magnitude faster computational speed when compared to the existing state-of-the-art algorithms. Further examinations of our algorithm on distinct systems, including pure water, micro-phase-separated electrolyte and protein solution demonstrate that the spatiotemporal information on all time and length scales investigated and thermodynamic quantities derived from our algorithm are in perfect agreement with those obtained from the existing algorithms. Therefore, our algorithm provides a breakthrough solution on scalability of computing the Coulomb interaction. It is particularly useful and cost-effective to simulate ultra-large systems, which was either impossible or very costing to conduct using existing algorithms, thus would benefit the broad community of sciences.

Phase Retrieval using Expectation Consistent Signal Recovery Algorithm based on Hypernetwork

Phase retrieval (PR) is an important component in modern computational imaging systems. Many algorithms have been developed over the past half-century. Recent advances in deep learning have introduced new possibilities for a robust and fast PR. An emerging technique called deep unfolding provides a systematic connection between conventional model-based iterative algorithms and modern data-based deep learning. Unfolded algorithms, which are powered by data learning, have shown remarkable performance and convergence speed improvement over original algorithms. Despite their potential, most existing unfolded algorithms are strictly confined to a fixed number of iterations when layer-dependent parameters are used. In this study, we develop a novel framework for deep unfolding to overcome existing limitations. Our development is based on an unfolded generalized expectation consistent signal recovery (GEC-SR) algorithm, wherein damping factors are left for data-driven learning. In particular, we introduce a hypernetwork to generate the damping factors for GEC-SR. Instead of learning a set of optimal damping factors directly, the hypernetwork learns how to generate the optimal damping factors according to the clinical settings, thereby ensuring its adaptivity to different scenarios. To enable the hypernetwork to adapt to varying layer numbers, we use a recurrent architecture to develop a dynamic hypernetwork that generates a damping factor that can vary online across layers. We also exploit a self-attention mechanism to enhance the robustness of the hypernetwork. Extensive experiments show that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing ones in terms of convergence speed and accuracy and still works well under very harsh settings, even under which many classical PR algorithms are unstable.

Labeling Multipath via Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has shown promise in providing apparent benefits in wireless communication and positioning. Most of the existing research focuses on the ability of RIS to adjust the direction of propagation. In this paper, we present another application based on RIS, named multipath labeling, which intends to inject a label on propagation paths through the RISs. Each labeled path contains spatial knowledge between the RIS and the receiver, thus opening the door for sensing the surrounding world by RISs. The critical challenge is how the labeled paths can be extracted and distinguish from other paths, especially with multipath effects. To address this challenge, we present a complete labeling procedure consisting of channel flipping, parameter extraction, and RIS association. Simulations under a practice ray-tracing model reveal the feasibility of the proposed labeling technique even under the sub 6GHz channels with severe multipath effect. We also apply the multipath labeling technique to localization, which assists user equipment in obtaining its precise location through only a single base station.

Modeling and Measurements for Multi-path Mitigation with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is capable of manipulating electromagnetic waves with its flexibly configurable unit cells, thus is an appealing technology to resist fast fading caused by multi-path in wireless communications. In this paper, a two-path propagation model for RIS-assisted wireless communications is proposed by considering both the direct path from the transmitter to the receiver and the assisted path provided by the RIS. The proposed propagation model unveils that the phase shifts of RISs can be optimized by appropriate configuration for multi-path fading mitigation. In particular, four types of RISs with different configuration capabilities are introduced and their performances on improving received signal power in virtue of the assisted path to resist fast fading are compared through extensive simulation results. In addition, an RIS operating at 35 GHz is used for experimental measurement. The experimental results verify that an RIS has the ability to combat fast fading and thus improves the receiving performance, which may lay a foundation for further researches.

Adaptive Channel Estimation Based on Model-Driven Deep Learning for Wideband mmWave Systems

Channel estimation in wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems is very challenging due to the beam squint effect. To solve the problem, we propose a learnable iterative shrinkage thresholding algorithm-based channel estimator (LISTA-CE) based on deep learning. The proposed channel estimator can learn to transform the beam-frequency mmWave channel into the domain with sparse features through training data. The transform domain enables us to adopt a simple denoiser with few trainable parameters. We further enhance the adaptivity of the estimator by introducing hypernetwork to automatically generate learnable parameters for LISTA-CE online. Simulation results show that the proposed approach can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art deep learning-based algorithms with lower complexity and fewer parameters and adapt to new scenarios rapidly.

Asymmetrical Uplink and Downlink Transceivers in Massive MIMO Systems

Even if massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) can theoretically bring huge benefits, it incurs substantial hardware complexity and expensive hardware costs. To address these issues while maintaining the system performance simultaneously, we develop an asymmetrical transceiver architecture for massive MIMO systems in this paper by releasing the shackles on radio frequency (RF) chains. Specifically, we first develop the architecture for the asymmetrical transceiver where the number of receive RF chains is different from that of the transmit RF chains. Due to this unequal number of RF chains, channel inconsistency appears. To overcome the channel inconsistency and thus fully harness the system's downlink data transmission capability, we propose two uplink-to-downlink channel transfer algorithms. The cost and power consumption models for the asymmetrical transceiver are also developed and the uplink signal-to-noise loss due to the channel inconsistency is investigated. Through analyzing system spectral, cost, and energy efficiency, we demonstrate that the proposed asymmetrical transceiver-based massive MIMO system can achieve excellent downlink spectral efficiency while maintaining a reasonable energy efficiency.

A Partially Random Trotter Algorithm for Quantum Hamiltonian Simulations

Given the Hamiltonian, the evaluation of unitary operators has been at the heart of many quantum algorithms. Motivated by existing deterministic and random methods, we present a hybrid approach, where Hamiltonians with large amplitude are evaluated at each time step, while the remaining terms are evaluated at random. The bound for the mean square error is obtained, together with a concentration bound. The mean square error consists of a variance term and a bias term, arising respectively from the random sampling of the Hamiltonian terms and the operator splitting error. Leveraging on the bias/variance trade-off, the error can be minimized by balancing the two. The concentration bound provides an estimate on the number of gates. The estimates are verified by using numerical experiments on classical computers.

Low-Latency Federated Learning over Wireless Channels with Differential Privacy

In federated learning (FL), model training is distributed over clients and local models are aggregated by a central server. The performance of uploaded models in such situations can vary widely due to imbalanced data distributions, potential demands on privacy protections, and quality of transmissions. In this paper, we aim to minimize FL training delay over wireless channels, constrained by overall training performance as well as each client's differential privacy (DP) requirement. We solve this problem in the framework of multi-agent multi-armed bandit (MAMAB) to deal with the situation where there are multiple clients confornting different unknown transmission environments, e.g., channel fading and interferences. Specifically, we first transform the long-term constraints on both training performance and each client's DP into a virtual queue based on the Lyapunov drift technique. Then, we convert the MAMAB to a max-min bipartite matching problem at each communication round, by estimating rewards with the upper confidence bound (UCB) approach. More importantly, we propose two efficient solutions to this matching problem, i.e., modified Hungarian algorithm and greedy matching with a better alternative (GMBA), in which the first one can achieve the optimal solution with a high complexity while the second one approaches a better trade-off by enabling a verified low-complexity with little performance loss. In addition, we develop an upper bound on the expected regret of this MAMAB based FL framework, which shows a linear growth over the logarithm of communication rounds, justifying its theoretical feasibility. Extensive experimental results are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms, and the impacts of various parameters on the FL performance over wireless edge networks are also discussed.

On Channel Reciprocity in Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Wireless Network

Channel reciprocity greatly facilitates downlink precoding in time-division duplexing (TDD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications without the need for channel state information (CSI) feedback. Recently, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) emerge as a promising technology to enhance the performance of future wireless networks. However, since the artificial electromagnetic characteristics of RISs do not strictly follow the normal laws of nature, it brings up a question: does the channel reciprocity hold in RIS-assisted TDD wireless networks? After briefly reviewing the reciprocity theorem, in this article, we show that there still exists channel reciprocity for RIS-assisted wireless networks satisfying certain conditions. We also experimentally demonstrate the reciprocity at the sub-6 GHz and the millimeter-wave frequency bands by using two fabricated RISs. Furthermore, we introduce several RIS-assisted approaches to realizing nonreciprocal channels. Finally, potential opportunities brought by reciprocal/nonreciprocal RISs and future research directions are outlined.

Enabling Plug-and-Play and Crowdsourcing SLAM in Wireless Communication Systems

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) during communication is emerging. This technology promises to provide information on propagation environments and transceivers' location, thus creating several new services and applications for the Internet of Things and environment-aware communication. Using crowdsourcing data collected by multiple agents appears to be much potential for enhancing SLAM performance. However, the measurement uncertainties in practice and biased estimations from multiple agents may result in serious errors. This study develops a robust SLAM method with measurement plug-and-play and crowdsourcing mechanisms to address the above problems. First, we divide measurements into different categories according to their unknown biases and realize a measurement plug-and-play mechanism by extending the classic belief propagation (BP)-based SLAM method. The proposed mechanism can obtain the time-varying agent location, radio features, and corresponding measurement biases (such as clock bias, orientation bias, and received signal strength model parameters), with high accuracy and robustness in challenging scenarios without any prior information on anchors and agents. Next, we establish a probabilistic crowdsourcing-based SLAM mechanism, in which multiple agents cooperate to construct and refine the radio map in a decentralized manner. Our study presents the first BP-based crowdsourcing that resolves the "double count" and "data reliability" problems through the flexible application of probabilistic data association methods. Numerical results reveal that the crowdsourcing mechanism can further improve the accuracy of the mapping result, which, in turn, ensures the decimeter-level localization accuracy of each agent in a challenging propagation environment.

Convergence analysis of the discrete consensus-based optimization algorithm with random batch interactions and heterogeneous noises

We present stochastic consensus and convergence of the discrete consensus-based optimization (CBO) algorithm with random batch interactions and heterogeneous external noises. Despite the wide applications and successful performance in many practical simulations, the convergence of the discrete CBO algorithm was not rigorously investigated in such a generality. In this work, we introduce a generalized discrete CBO algorithm with a weighted representative point and random batch interactions, and show that the proposed discrete CBO algorithm exhibits stochastic consensus and convergence toward the common equilibrium state exponentially fast under suitable assumptions on system parameters. For this, we recast the given CBO algorithm with random batch interactions as a discrete consensus model with a random switching network topology, and then we use the mixing property of interactions over sufficiently long time interval to derive stochastic consensus and convergence estimates in mean square and almost sure senses. Our proposed analysis significantly improves earlier works on the convergence analysis of CBO models with full batch interactions and homogeneous external noises.
