Improving Bird's Eye View Semantic Segmentation by Task Decomposition

Semantic segmentation in bird's eye view (BEV) plays a crucial role in autonomous driving. Previous methods usually follow an end-to-end pipeline, directly predicting the BEV segmentation map from monocular RGB inputs. However, the challenge arises when the RGB inputs and BEV targets from distinct perspectives, making the direct point-to-point predicting hard to optimize. In this paper, we decompose the original BEV segmentation task into two stages, namely BEV map reconstruction and RGB-BEV feature alignment. In the first stage, we train a BEV autoencoder to reconstruct the BEV segmentation maps given corrupted noisy latent representation, which urges the decoder to learn fundamental knowledge of typical BEV patterns. The second stage involves mapping RGB input images into the BEV latent space of the first stage, directly optimizing the correlations between the two views at the feature level. Our approach simplifies the complexity of combining perception and generation into distinct steps, equipping the model to handle intricate and challenging scenes effectively. Besides, we propose to transform the BEV segmentation map from the Cartesian to the polar coordinate system to establish the column-wise correspondence between RGB images and BEV maps. Moreover, our method requires neither multi-scale features nor camera intrinsic parameters for depth estimation and saves computational overhead. Extensive experiments on nuScenes and Argoverse show the effectiveness and efficiency of our method. Code is available at https://github.com/happytianhao/TaDe.

Stability and superconductivity of freestanding two-dimensional transition metal boridene: M4/3B2

The small atomic mass of boron indicates strong electron-phonon coupling, so it may have a brilliant performance in superconductivity. Recently, a new 2D boride sheet with ordered metal vacancies and surface terminals (Mo4/3B2-x) was realized in experiments (Science 2021, 373, 801). Here, the 2D monolayer freestanding Mo4/3B2is evidenced to be thermodynamically stable. Through electronic structure, phonon spectrum and electron-phonon coupling, monolayer Mo4/3B2 is found to be an intrinsic phonon-mediated superconductor. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is determined to be 4.06 K by the McMillian-Allen-Dynes formula. Remarkably, the Tc of monolayer Mo4/3B2 can be increased to 6.78 K with an appropriate biaxial tensile strain (+5%). Moreover, we predict that other transition metal replacing Mo atoms is also stable and retaining the superconductivity. Such as monolayer W4/3B2 is also a superconductor with the Tc of 2.37 K. Our research results enrich the database of 2D monolayer superconductors and boron-related formed materials science.

Adaptive Low Rank Adaptation of Segment Anything to Salient Object Detection

Foundation models, such as OpenAI's GPT-3 and GPT-4, Meta's LLaMA, and Google's PaLM2, have revolutionized the field of artificial intelligence. A notable paradigm shift has been the advent of the Segment Anything Model (SAM), which has exhibited a remarkable capability to segment real-world objects, trained on 1 billion masks and 11 million images. Although SAM excels in general object segmentation, it lacks the intrinsic ability to detect salient objects, resulting in suboptimal performance in this domain. To address this challenge, we present the Segment Salient Object Model (SSOM), an innovative approach that adaptively fine-tunes SAM for salient object detection by harnessing the low-rank structure inherent in deep learning. Comprehensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations across five challenging RGB benchmark datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our approach, surpassing state-of-the-art methods.

P2C: Self-Supervised Point Cloud Completion from Single Partial Clouds

Point cloud completion aims to recover the complete shape based on a partial observation. Existing methods require either complete point clouds or multiple partial observations of the same object for learning. In contrast to previous approaches, we present Partial2Complete (P2C), the first self-supervised framework that completes point cloud objects using training samples consisting of only a single incomplete point cloud per object. Specifically, our framework groups incomplete point clouds into local patches as input and predicts masked patches by learning prior information from different partial objects. We also propose Region-Aware Chamfer Distance to regularize shape mismatch without limiting completion capability, and devise the Normal Consistency Constraint to incorporate a local planarity assumption, encouraging the recovered shape surface to be continuous and complete. In this way, P2C no longer needs multiple observations or complete point clouds as ground truth. Instead, structural cues are learned from a category-specific dataset to complete partial point clouds of objects. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on both synthetic ShapeNet data and real-world ScanNet data, showing that P2C produces comparable results to methods trained with complete shapes, and outperforms methods learned with multiple partial observations. Ultra-Low-Frequency Radio Astronomy Observations from a Selenocentric Orbit: first results of the Longjiang-2 experiment

This paper introduces the first results of observations with the Ultra-Long-Wavelength (ULW) -- Low Frequency Interferometer and Spectrometer (LFIS) on board the selenocentric satellite Longjiang-2. We present a brief description of the satellite and focus on the LFIS payload. The in-orbit commissioning confirmed a reliable operational status of the instrumentation. We also present results of a transition observation, which offers unique measurements on several novel aspects. We estimate the RFI suppression required for such a radio astronomy instrumentation at the Moon distances from Earth to be of the order of 80 dB. We analyse a method of separating Earth- and satellite-originated radio frequency interference (RFI). It is found that the RFI level at frequencies lower than a few MHz is smaller than the receiver noise floor.

Energy-Based Residual Latent Transport for Unsupervised Point Cloud Completion

Unsupervised point cloud completion aims to infer the whole geometry of a partial object observation without requiring partial-complete correspondence. Differing from existing deterministic approaches, we advocate generative modeling based unsupervised point cloud completion to explore the missing correspondence. Specifically, we propose a novel framework that performs completion by transforming a partial shape encoding into a complete one using a latent transport module, and it is designed as a latent-space energy-based model (EBM) in an encoder-decoder architecture, aiming to learn a probability distribution conditioned on the partial shape encoding. To train the latent code transport module and the encoder-decoder network jointly, we introduce a residual sampling strategy, where the residual captures the domain gap between partial and complete shape latent spaces. As a generative model-based framework, our method can produce uncertainty maps consistent with human perception, leading to explainable unsupervised point cloud completion. We experimentally show that the proposed method produces high-fidelity completion results, outperforming state-of-the-art models by a significant margin.

PU-Transformer: Point Cloud Upsampling Transformer

Given the rapid development of 3D scanners, point clouds are becoming popular in AI-driven machines. However, point cloud data is inherently sparse and irregular, causing significant difficulties for machine perception. In this work, we focus on the point cloud upsampling task that intends to generate dense high-fidelity point clouds from sparse input data. Specifically, to activate the transformer's strong capability in representing features, we develop a new variant of a multi-head self-attention structure to enhance both point-wise and channel-wise relations of the feature map. In addition, we leverage a positional fusion block to comprehensively capture the local context of point cloud data, providing more position-related information about the scattered points. As the first transformer model introduced for point cloud upsampling, we demonstrate the outstanding performance of our approach by comparing with the state-of-the-art CNN-based methods on different benchmarks quantitatively and qualitatively.

Estimating Cross-validatory Predictive P-values with Integrated Importance Sampling for Disease Mapping Models

An important statistical task in disease mapping problems is to identify divergent regions with unusually high or low risk of disease. Leave-one-out cross-validatory (LOOCV) model assessment is the gold standard for estimating predictive p-values that can flag such divergent regions. However, actual LOOCV is time-consuming because one needs to rerun a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis for each posterior distribution in which an observation is held out as a test case. This paper introduces a new method, called integrated importance sampling (iIS), for estimating LOOCV predictive p-values with only Markov chain samples drawn from the posterior based on a full data set. The key step in iIS is that we integrate away the latent variables associated the test observation with respect to their conditional distribution \textit{without} reference to the actual observation. By following the general theory for importance sampling, the formula used by iIS can be proved to be equivalent to the LOOCV predictive p-value. We compare iIS and other three existing methods in the literature with two disease mapping datasets. Our empirical results show that the predictive p-values estimated with iIS are almost identical to the predictive p-values estimated with actual LOOCV, and outperform those given by the existing three methods, namely, the posterior predictive checking, the ordinary importance sampling, and the ghosting method by Marshall and Spiegelhalter (2003).

PnP-3D: A Plug-and-Play for 3D Point Clouds

With the help of the deep learning paradigm, many point cloud networks have been invented for visual analysis. However, there is great potential for development of these networks since the given information of point cloud data has not been fully exploited. To improve the effectiveness of existing networks in analyzing point cloud data, we propose a plug-and-play module, PnP-3D, aiming to refine the fundamental point cloud feature representations by involving more local context and global bilinear response from explicit 3D space and implicit feature space. To thoroughly evaluate our approach, we conduct experiments on three standard point cloud analysis tasks, including classification, semantic segmentation, and object detection, where we select three state-of-the-art networks from each task for evaluation. Serving as a plug-and-play module, PnP-3D can significantly boost the performances of established networks. In addition to achieving state-of-the-art results on four widely used point cloud benchmarks, we present comprehensive ablation studies and visualizations to demonstrate our approach's advantages. The code will be available at https://github.com/ShiQiu0419/pnp-3d.

Investigating Attention Mechanism in 3D Point Cloud Object Detection

Object detection in three-dimensional (3D) space attracts much interest from academia and industry since it is an essential task in AI-driven applications such as robotics, autonomous driving, and augmented reality. As the basic format of 3D data, the point cloud can provide detailed geometric information about the objects in the original 3D space. However, due to 3D data's sparsity and unorderedness, specially designed networks and modules are needed to process this type of data. Attention mechanism has achieved impressive performance in diverse computer vision tasks; however, it is unclear how attention modules would affect the performance of 3D point cloud object detection and what sort of attention modules could fit with the inherent properties of 3D data. This work investigates the role of the attention mechanism in 3D point cloud object detection and provides insights into the potential of different attention modules. To achieve that, we comprehensively investigate classical 2D attentions, novel 3D attentions, including the latest point cloud transformers on SUN RGB-D and ScanNetV2 datasets. Based on the detailed experiments and analysis, we conclude the effects of different attention modules. This paper is expected to serve as a reference source for benefiting attention-embedded 3D point cloud object detection. Systematic study of the Chiral Magnetic Effect with the AVFD model at LHC energies

We present a systematic study of the correlators used experimentally to probe the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) using the Anomalous Viscous Fluid Dynamics (AVFD) model in Pb--Pb and Xe--Xe collisions at LHC energies. We find a parametrization that describes the dependence of these correlators on the value of the axial current density ($n_5/\mathrm{s}$), which dictates the CME signal, and on the parameter that governs the background in these measurements i.e., the percentage of local charge conservation (LCC) within an event. This allows to deduce the values of $n_5/\mathrm{s}$ and the LCC percentage that provide a quantitative description of the centrality dependence of the experimental measurements. We find that the results in Xe--Xe collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.44$~TeV are consistent with a background only scenario. On the other hand, the model needs a significant non-zero value of $n_5/\mathrm{s}$ to match the measurements in Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02$~TeV.

Geometric Back-projection Network for Point Cloud Classification

As the basic task of point cloud analysis, classification is fundamental but always challenging. To address some unsolved problems of existing methods, we propose a network that captures geometric features of point clouds for better representations. To achieve this, on the one hand, we enrich the geometric information of points in low-level 3D space explicitly. On the other hand, we apply CNN-based structures in high-level feature spaces to learn local geometric context implicitly. Specifically, we leverage an idea of error-correcting feedback structure to capture the local features of point clouds comprehensively. Furthermore, an attention module based on channel affinity assists the feature map to avoid possible redundancy by emphasizing its distinct channels. The performance on both synthetic and real-world point clouds datasets demonstrate the superiority and applicability of our network. Comparing with other state-of-the-art methods, our approach balances accuracy and efficiency.

Semantic Segmentation for Real Point Cloud Scenes via Bilateral Augmentation and Adaptive Fusion

Given the prominence of current 3D sensors, a fine-grained analysis on the basic point cloud data is worthy of further investigation. Particularly, real point cloud scenes can intuitively capture complex surroundings in the real world, but due to 3D data's raw nature, it is very challenging for machine perception. In this work, we concentrate on the essential visual task, semantic segmentation, for large-scale point cloud data collected in reality. On the one hand, to reduce the ambiguity in nearby points, we augment their local context by fully utilizing both geometric and semantic features in a bilateral structure. On the other hand, we comprehensively interpret the distinctness of the points from multiple resolutions and represent the feature map following an adaptive fusion method at point-level for accurate semantic segmentation. Further, we provide specific ablation studies and intuitive visualizations to validate our key modules. By comparing with state-of-the-art networks on three different benchmarks, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our network.

Dense-Resolution Network for Point Cloud Classification and Segmentation

Point cloud analysis is attracting attention from Artificial Intelligence research since it can be widely used in applications such as robotics, Augmented Reality, self-driving. However, it is always challenging due to irregularities, unorderedness, and sparsity. In this article, we propose a novel network named Dense-Resolution Network (DRNet) for point cloud analysis. Our DRNet is designed to learn local point features from the point cloud in different resolutions. In order to learn local point groups more effectively, we present a novel grouping method for local neighborhood searching and an error-minimizing module for capturing local features. In addition to validating the network on widely used point cloud segmentation and classification benchmarks, we also test and visualize the performance of the components. Comparing with other state-of-the-art methods, our network shows superiority on ModelNet40, ShapeNet synthetic and ScanObjectNN real point cloud datasets.

Integer Valued Definable Functions in $\mathbb{R}_{an,\exp}$

We give two variations on a result of Wilkie's on unary functions defianble in $\mathbb{R}_{an,\exp}$ that take integer values at positive integers. Provided that the functions grows slower than the function $2^x$, Wilkie showed that is must be eventually equal to a polynomial. We show the same conclusion under a stronger growth condition but only assuming that the function takes values sufficiently close to a integers at positive integers. In a different variation we show that it suffices to assume that the function takes integer values on a sufficiently dense subset of the positive integers(for instance primes), again under a stronger growth bound than that in Wilkie's result.

Graphene nanopipette enabled liquid delivery at zeptoliter precision

Accurate extraction of liquid is the first step towards low-volume liquid delivery and nanocharacterization, which plays a significant role in biomedical research. In this study, a tip-shaped graphene nanopipette (GNP) is proposed by encapsulating the biomolecule solution on the prefabricated metal tip with graphene. The volume of the encapsulated liquid is highly controllable at zeptoliter precision by tuning the encapsulating speed and the number of graphene encapsulation rounds. Using protein (ferritin) solution as an example, it has been confirmed by finite element analysis and the controlled experiments that the GNP allows the delivery of ferritin solution at the zeptoliter-scale. Furthermore, GNP is demonstrated as a new type of tip-shaped liquid cell, which is suitable for multiple nanocharacterization techniques. In particular, due to the ultra-sharp tip shape, isotope (13C)-labelled glucose solution encapsulated in GNP has been characterized by atom probe tomography (APT) in the laser-pulsed mode. Analysis of the mass spectrum and the reconstructed three-dimensional chemical maps reveals the quantitative distribution and the compositions of individual glucose molecules. The GNP is expected to be introduced to deliver liquid in the range of zeptoliters to attoliters, and brings a new capability for characterization of biological specimens in their near-native state.

Unconstrained Fashion Landmark Detection via Hierarchical Recurrent Transformer Networks

Fashion landmarks are functional key points defined on clothes, such as corners of neckline, hemline, and cuff. They have been recently introduced as an effective visual representation for fashion image understanding. However, detecting fashion landmarks are challenging due to background clutters, human poses, and scales. To remove the above variations, previous works usually assumed bounding boxes of clothes are provided in training and test as additional annotations, which are expensive to obtain and inapplicable in practice. This work addresses unconstrained fashion landmark detection, where clothing bounding boxes are not provided in both training and test. To this end, we present a novel Deep LAndmark Network (DLAN), where bounding boxes and landmarks are jointly estimated and trained iteratively in an end-to-end manner. DLAN contains two dedicated modules, including a Selective Dilated Convolution for handling scale discrepancies, and a Hierarchical Recurrent Spatial Transformer for handling background clutters. To evaluate DLAN, we present a large-scale fashion landmark dataset, namely Unconstrained Landmark Database (ULD), consisting of 30K images. Statistics show that ULD is more challenging than existing datasets in terms of image scales, background clutters, and human poses. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of DLAN over the state-of-the-art methods. DLAN also exhibits excellent generalization across different clothing categories and modalities, making it extremely suitable for real-world fashion analysis.
